Dynamical signatures are known to precede jamming in hard-particle systems, but static structural signatures have proven more elusive. The observation that compressing hard-particle packings towards jamming causes growing hyperuniformity has paved the way for the analysis of jamming as an "inverted critical point" in which the direct correlation function $c(r)$ diverges. We establish quantitative relationships between various singularities in $c(r)$ and the total correlation function $h(r)$ that provide a concrete means of identifying features that must be expressed in $c(r)$ if one hopes to reproduce details in the pair correlation function accurately. We also analyze systems of three-dimensional monodisperse hard-spheres of diameter $D$ as they approach ordered and disordered jammed configurations. For the latter, we use the Lubachevsky-Stillinger (LS) and Torquato-Jiao (TJ) packing algorithms, which both generate disordered packings, but can show perceptible structural differences. We identify a short-ranged scaling $c(r) \propto -1/r$ as $r \rightarrow 0$ and show that this, along with the developing delta function at $c(D)$, is a consequence of the growing long-rangedness in $c(r)$. Near the freezing density, we identify qualitative differences in the structure factor $S(k)$ as well as $c(r)$ between TJ- and LS-generated configurations and link them to differences in the protocols' packing dynamics. Configurations from both algorithms have structure factors that approach zero in the low-wavenumber limit as jamming is approached and are shown to exhibit a corresponding power-law decay in $c(r)$ for large $r$ as a consequence. Our work advances the notion that static signatures are exhibited by hard-particle packings as they approach jamming and underscores the utility of the direct correlation function as a means of monitoring for an incipient rigid network.
We show for the first time that collectively jammed disordered packings of three-dimensional monodisperse frictionless hard spheres can be produced and tuned using a novel numerical protocol with packing density $ϕ$ as low as 0.6. This is well below the value of 0.64 associated with the maximally random jammed state and entirely unrelated to the ill-defined ``random loose packing'' state density. Specifically, collectively jammed packings are generated with a very narrow distribution centered at any density $ϕ$ over a wide density range $ϕ\in [0.6,~0.74048\ldots]$ with variable disorder. Our r…
Disordered jammed packings under confinement have received considerably less attention than their \textit{bulk} counterparts and yet arise in a variety of practical situations. In this work, we study binary sphere packings that are confined between two parallel hard planes, and generalize the Torquato-Jiao (TJ) sequential linear programming algorithm [Phys. Rev. E {\bf 82}, 061302 (2010)] to obtain putative maximally random jammed (MRJ) packings that are exactly isostatic with high fidelity over a large range of plane separation distances $H$, small to large sphere radius ratio $α$ and small s…
We investigate the mechanical response of jammed packings of circulo-lines, interacting via purely repulsive, linear spring forces, as a function of pressure $P$ during athermal, quasistatic isotropic compression. Prior work has shown that the ensemble-averaged shear modulus for jammed disk packings scales as a power-law, $\langle G(P) \rangle \sim P^β$, with $β\sim 0.5$, over a wide range of pressure. For packings of circulo-lines, we also find robust power-law scaling of $\langle G(P)\rangle$ over the same range of pressure for aspect ratios ${\cal R} \gtrsim 1.2$. However, the power-law sca…
In 2005, Wyart et al. (Europhys. Lett., 72 (2005) 486) showed that the low frequency vibrational properties of jammed amorphous sphere packings can be understood in terms of a length scale, called l*, that diverges as the system becomes marginally unstable. Despite the tremendous success of this theory, it has been difficult to connect the counting argument that defines l* to other length scales that diverge near the jamming transition. We present an alternate derivation of l* based on the onset of rigidity. This phenomenological approach reveals the physical mechanism underlying the length sc…
We numerically study the structure of the interactions occurring in three-dimensional systems of hard spheres at jamming, focusing on the large-scale behavior. Given the fundamental role they play in the configuration of jammed packings, we analyze the propagation through the system of the weak forces and of the variation of the coordination number with respect to the isostaticity condition $ΔZ$. We show that these correlations can be successfully probed by introducing a correlation function weighted on the density-density fluctuations. The results of this analysis can be further improved by i…
The evolution of the force distributions during the isotropic compression of two dimensional packings of soft frictional particles is investigated numerically. Regardless of the applied deformation, the normal contact force distribution can be fitted by the product of a power-law, and a stretched exponential, while the tangential force distribution is fitted well by a Gaussian. With increasing strain, the asymptotic behavior at large forces does not change, but both normal and tangential distributions exhibit a broadening, even though, when scaled with the average forces, their widths decrease…
Packing problems have been a source of fascination for millenia and their study has produced a rich literature that spans numerous disciplines. Investigations of hard-particle packing models have provided basic insights into the structure and bulk properties of condensed phases of matter, including low-temperature states (e.g., molecular and colloidal liquids, crystals and glasses), multiphase heterogeneous media, granular media, and biological systems. The densest packings are of great interest in pure mathematics, including discrete geometry and number theory. This perspective reviews pertin…
We study the vibrational properties near a free surface of disordered spring networks derived from jammed sphere packings. In bulk systems, without surfaces, it is well understood that such systems have a plateau in the density of vibrational modes extending down to a frequency scale $ω^*$. This frequency is controlled by $ΔZ = \langle Z \rangle - 2d$, the difference between the average coordination of the spheres and twice the spatial dimension, $d$, of the system, which vanishes at the jamming transition. In the presence of a free surface we find that there is a density of disordered vibrati…
This review describes the diversity of jammed configurations attainable by frictionless convex nonoverlapping (hard) particles in Euclidean spaces and for that purpose it stresses individual-packing geometric analysis. A fundamental feature of that diversity is the necessity to classify individual jammed configurations according to whether they are locally, collectively, or strictly jammed. Each of these categories contains a multitude of jammed configurations spanning a wide and (in the large system limit) continuous range of intensive properties, including packing fraction $ϕ$, mean contact …
As a function of packing fraction at zero temperature and applied stress, an amorphous packing of spheres exhibits a jamming transition where the system is sensitive to boundary conditions even in the thermodynamic limit. Upon further compression, the system should become insensitive to boundary conditions provided it is sufficiently large. Here we explore the linear response to a large class of boundary perturbations in 2 and 3 dimensions. We consider each finite packing with periodic-boundary conditions as the basis of an infinite square or cubic lattice and study properties of vibrational m…
We computationally study jammed disordered hard-sphere packings as large as a million particles. We show that the packings are saturated and hyperuniform, i.e., that local density fluctuations grow only as a logarithmically-augmented surface area rather than the volume of the window. The structure factor shows an unusual non-analytic linear dependence near the origin, $S(k)\sim|k|$. In addition to exponentially damped oscillations seen in liquids, this implies a weak power-law tail in the total correlation function, $h(r)\sim-r^{-4}$, and a long-ranged direct correlation function.
We show that quasi-long-range (QLR) pair correlations that decay asymptotically with scaling $r^{-(d+1)}$ in $d$-dimensional Euclidean space $\mathbb{R}^d$, trademarks of certain quantum systems and cosmological structures, are a universal signature of maximally random jammed (MRJ) hard-particle packings. We introduce a novel hyperuniformity descriptor in MRJ packings by studying local-volume-fraction fluctuations and show that infinite-wavelength fluctuations vanish even for packings with size- and shape-distributions. Special void statistics induce hyperuniformity and QLR pair correlations.
We analyze the large scale structure and fluctuations of jammed packings of size disperse spheres, produced in a granular experiment as well as numerically. While the structure factor of the packings reveals no unusual behavior for small wavevectors, the compressibility displays an anomalous linear dependence at low wavectors and vanishes when q -> 0. We show that such behavior occurs because jammed packings of size disperse spheres have no bulk fluctuations of the volume fraction and are thus hyperuniform, a property not observed experimentally before. Our results apply to arbitrary particle …
In the first paper of this series, we introduced Voronoi correlation functions to characterize the structure of maximally random jammed (MRJ) sphere packings across length scales. In the present paper, we determine a variety of correlation functions that can be rigorously related to effective physical properties of MRJ sphere packings and compare them to the corresponding statistical descriptors for overlapping spheres and equilibrium hard-sphere systems. Such structural descriptors arise in rigorous bounds and formulas for effective transport properties, diffusion and reactions constants, ela…
We perform extensive computational studies of two-dimensional static bidisperse disk packings using two distinct packing-generation protocols. The first involves thermally quenching equilibrated liquid configurations to zero temperature over a range of thermal quench rates $r$ and initial packing fractions followed by compression and decompression in small steps to reach packing fractions $ϕ_J$ at jamming onset. For the second, we seed the system with initial configurations that promote micro- and macrophase-separated packings followed by compression and decompression to $ϕ_J$. We find that am…
In the first two papers of this series, we characterized the structure of maximally random jammed (MRJ) sphere packings across length scales by computing a variety of different correlation functions, spectral functions, hole probabilities, and local density fluctuations. From the remarkable structural features of the MRJ packings, especially its disordered hyperuniformity, exceptional physical properties can be expected. Here, we employ these structural descriptors to estimate effective transport and electromagnetic properties via rigorous bounds, exact expansions, and accurate analytical appr…
We generate and study an ensemble of isostatic jammed hard-sphere lattices. These lattices are obtained by compression of a periodic system with an adaptive unit cell containing a single sphere until the point of mechanical stability. We present detailed numerical data about the densities, pair correlations, force distributions, and structure factors of such lattices. We show that this model retains many of the crucial structural features of the classical hard-sphere model and propose it as a model for the jamming and glass transitions that enables exploration of much higher dimensions than ar…
We characterize the structure of maximally random jammed (MRJ) sphere packings by computing the Minkowski functionals (volume, surface area, and integrated mean curvature) of their associated Voronoi cells. The probability distribution functions of these functionals of Voronoi cells in MRJ sphere packings are qualitatively similar to those of an equilibrium hard-sphere liquid and partly even to the uncorrelated Poisson point process, implying that such local statistics are relatively structurally insensitive. This is not surprising because the Minkowski functionals of a single Voronoi cell inc…
Hard-particle packings have served as useful starting points to study the structure of diverse systems such as liquids, living cells, granular media, glasses, and amorphous solids. Howard Reiss has played a major role in helping to illuminate our understanding of hard-particle systems, which still offer scientists many interesting conundrums. Jammed configurations of hard particles are of great fundamental and practical interest. What one precisely means by a "jammed" configuration is quite subtle and considerable ambiguity remains in the literature on this question. We will show that there is…
In 1989, Sir Sam Edwards made the visionary proposition to treat jammed granular materials using a volume ensemble of equiprobable jammed states in analogy to thermal equilibrium statistical mechanics, despite their inherent athermal features. Since then, the statistical mechanics approach for jammed matter has garnered an extraordinary amount of attention by both theorists and experimentalists. Here, we review a systematic approach to jammed matter based on the Edwards statistical mechanical ensemble. We discuss the construction of microcanonical and canonical ensembles based on the volume fu…
Numerous soft materials jam into an amorphous solid at high packing fraction. This non-equilibrium phase transition is best understood in the context of a model system in which particles repel elastically when they overlap. Recently, however, it was shown that introducing any finite amount of attraction between particles changes the universality class of the transition. The properties of this new ``sticky jamming'' class remain almost entirely unexplored. We use molecular dynamics simulations and scaling analysis to determine the shear modulus, bulk modulus, and coordination of marginal solids…
Dense random packings of hard particles are useful models of granular media and are closely related to the structure of nonequilibrium low-temperature amorphous phases of matter. Most work has been done for random jammed packings of spheres, and it is only recently that corresponding packings of nonspherical particles (e.g., ellipsoids) have received attention. Here we report a study of the maximally random jammed (MRJ) packings of binary superdisks and monodispersed superballs whose shapes are defined by |x_1|^2p+...+|x_2|^2p<=1 with d = 2 and 3, respectively, where p is the deformation param…
Hyperuniformity characterizes a state of matter that is poised at a critical point at which density or volume-fraction fluctuations are anomalously suppressed at infinite wavelengths. Recently, much attention has been given to the link between strict jamming and hyperuniformity in frictionless hard-particle packings. Doing so requires one to study very large packings, which can be difficult to jam properly. We modify the rigorous linear programming method of Donev et al. [J. Comp. Phys. 197, 139 (2004)] in order to test for jamming in putatively jammed packings of hard-disks in two dimensions.…
Random packings of objects of a particular shape are ubiquitous in science and engineering. However, such jammed matter states have eluded any systematic theoretical treatment due to the strong positional and orientational correlations involved. In recent years progress on a fundamental description of jammed matter could be made by starting from a constant volume ensemble in the spirit of conventional statistical mechanics. Recent work has shown that this approach, first introduced by S. F. Edwards more than two decades ago, can be cast into a predictive framework to calculate the packing frac…
To better understand the surprising low-frequency vibrational modes in structural glasses, we study the spectra of a large ensemble of sparse random matrices where disorder is controlled by the distribution of bond weights and network coordination. We find $D(ω)$ has three regimes: a very-low-frequency regime that can be predicted analytically using extremal statistics, an intermediate regime with quasi-localized modes, and a plateau with $D(ω) \sim ω^0$. In the special case of uniform bond weights, the intermediate regime displays $D(ω) \sim ω^4$, independent of network coordination and syste…
We create collectively jammed (CJ) packings of 50-50 bidisperse mixtures of smooth disks in 2d using an algorithm in which we successively compress or expand soft particles and minimize the total energy at each step until the particles are just at contact. We focus on small systems in 2d and thus are able to find nearly all of the collectively jammed states at each system size. We decompose the probability $P(ϕ)$ for obtaining a collectively jammed state at a particular packing fraction $ϕ$ into two composite functions: 1) the density of CJ packing fractions $ρ(ϕ)$, which only depends on geome…
Jammed packings' mechanical properties depend sensitively on their detailed local structure. Here we provide a complete characterization of the pair correlation close to contact and of the force distribution of jammed frictionless spheres. In particular we discover a set of new scaling relations that connect the behavior of particles bearing small forces and those bearing no force but that are almost in contact. By performing systematic investigations for spatial dimensions d=3-10, in a wide density range and using different preparation protocols, we show that these scalings are indeed univers…
Vibrational spectra and normal modes of mechanically stable particle packings in three dimensions are analyzed over a range of compressions, from near the jamming transition, where the packings lose their rigidity, to far above it. At high frequency, the normal modes are localized at all compressions. At low frequency, the nature of the modes depends somewhat on compression. At large compressions, far from the transition, the lowest-frequency normal modes have some plane-wave character, though less than one would expect for a crystalline or isotropic solid. At low compressions near the jamming…
Jammed particulate systems, such as granular media, colloids, and foams, interact via one-sided forces that are nonzero only when particles overlap. We find that systems with one-sided repulsive interactions possess no linear response regime in the large system limit ($N\rightarrow \infty$) for all pressures $p$ (or compressions $Δϕ$), and for all $N$ near jamming onset $p\rightarrow 0$. We perform simulations on 2D frictionless bidisperse mechanically stable disk packings over a range of packing fractions $Δϕ= ϕ-ϕ_J$ above jamming onset $ϕ_J$. We apply perturbations with amplitude $δ$ to the …
Granular packings of hard discs are investigated by means of contact dynamics which is an appropriate technique to explore the allowed force-realizations in the space of contact forces. Configurations are generated for given values of the friction coefficient, and then an ensemble of equilibrium forces is found for fixed contacts. We study the force fluctuations within this ensemble. In the limit of zero friction the fluctuations vanish in accordance with the isostaticity of the packing. The magnitude of the fluctuations has a non-monotonous friction dependence. The increase for small friction…
We extend the results from the first part of this series of two papers by examining hyperuniformity in heterogeneous media composed of impenetrable anisotropic inclusions. Specifically, we consider maximally random jammed packings of hard ellipses and superdisks and show that these systems both possess vanishing infinite-wavelength local-volume-fraction fluctuations and quasi-long-range pair correlations. Our results suggest a strong generalization of a conjecture by Torquato and Stillinger [Phys. Rev. E. 68, 041113 (2003)], namely that all strictly jammed saturated packings of hard particles,…
The isostatic jamming limit of frictionless spherical particles from Edwards' statistical mechanics [Song \emph{et al.}, Nature (London) {\bf 453}, 629 (2008)] is generalized to arbitrary dimension $d$ using a liquid-state description. The asymptotic high-dimensional behavior of the self-consistent relation is obtained by saddle-point evaluation and checked numerically. The resulting random close packing density scaling $ϕ\sim d\,2^{-d}$ is consistent with that of other approaches, such as replica theory and density functional theory. The validity of various structural approximations is assess…
Hyperuniform many-particle distributions possess a local number variance that grows more slowly than the volume of an observation window, implying that the local density is effectively homogeneous beyond a few characteristic length scales. Previous work on maximally random strictly jammed sphere packings in three dimensions has shown that these systems are hyperuniform and possess unusual quasi-long-range pair correlations, resulting in anomalous logarithmic growth in the number variance. However, recent work on maximally random jammed sphere packings with a size distribution has suggested tha…
Several mean-field theories predict that Hessian matrices of amorphous solids can be written by using the random matrix in the limit of the large spatial dimensions $d\to\infty$. Motivated by these results, we here propose a way to map a Hessian of the amorphous solid to a random matrix. This is possible by determining the coefficients of a random matrix so that the trace of the random matrix coincides with the Hessian of the original system. We compare our result with that of previous numerical simulations of harmonic spheres in several spatial dimensions $d=3$, $5$, and $9$. For small pressu…
The structural properties of static, jammed packings of monodisperse spheres in the vicinity of the jamming transition are investigated using large-scale computer simulations. At small wavenumber $k$, we argue that the anomalous behavior in the static structure factor, $S(k) \sim k$, is consequential of an excess of low-frequency, collective excitations seen in the vibrational spectrum. This anomalous feature becomes more pronounced closest to the jamming transition, such that $S(0) \to 0$ at the transition point. We introduce an appropriate dispersion relation that accounts for these phenomen…
Using random walk simulations we explore diffusive transport through monodisperse sphere packings over a range of packing fractions, $ϕ$, in the vicinity of the jamming transition at $ϕ_{c}$. Various diffusion properties are computed over several orders of magnitude in both time and packing pressure. Two well-separated regimes of normal, "Fickian" diffusion, where the mean squared displacement is linear in time, are observed. The first corresponds to diffusion inside individual spheres, while the latter is the long-time bulk diffusion. The intermediate anomalous diffusion regime and the long-t…
An exact description of the complete jamming landscape is developed for a system of hard discs of diameter $σ$, confined between two lines separated by a distance $1+\sqrt{3/4} < H/σ< 2$. By considering all possible local packing arrangements, the generalized ensemble partition function of jammed states is obtained using the transfer matrix method, which allows us to calculate the configurational entropy and the equation of state for the packings. Exploring the relationship between structural order and packing density, we find that the geometric frustration between local packing environments p…
The inherent structure landscape for a system of hard spheres confined to a hard cylindrical channel, such that spheres can only contact their first and second neighbours, is studied using an analytical model that extends previous results [Phys. Rev. Lett. 115, 025702 (2015)] to provide a comprehensive picture of jammed packings over a range of packing densities. In the model, a packing is described as an arrangement of $k$ helical sections, separated by defects, that have alternating helical twist directions and where all spheres satisfy local jamming constraints. The structure of each helica…
We study the approach to jamming in hard-sphere packings, and, in particular, the pair correlation function $g_{2}(r)$ around contact, both theoretically and computationally. Our computational data unambiguously separates the narrowing delta-function contribution to $g_{2}$ due to emerging interparticle contacts from the background contribution due to near contacts. The data also shows with unprecedented accuracy that disordered hard-sphere packings are strictly isostatic, i.e., the number of exact contacts in the jamming limit is exactly equal to the number of degrees of freedom, once rattler…
We relate the structure factor $S(\mathbf{k} \to \mathbf{0})$ in a system of jammed hard spheres of number density $ρ$ to its complexity per particle $Σ(ρ)$ by the formula $S(\mathbf{k} \to \mathbf{0})=-1/ [ρ^2Σ''(ρ)+2ρΣ'(ρ)]$. We have verified this formula for the case of jammed disks in a narrow channel, for which it is possible to find $Σ(ρ)$ and $S(\mathbf{k})$ analytically. Hyperuniformity, which is the vanishing of $S(\mathbf{k} \to \mathbf{0})$, will therefore not occur if the complexity is nonzero. An example is given of a jammed state of hard disks in a narrow channel which is hyperun…
We answer the questions raised by Donev, Torquato, Stillinger, and Connelly in their "Comment on "Jamming at zero temperature and zero applied stress: The epitome of disorder.' " We emphasize that we follow a fundamentally different approach than they have done to reinterpret random close packing in terms of the "maximally random jammed" framework. We define the "maximally random jammed packing fraction" to be where the largest number of initial states, chosen completely randomly, have relaxed final states at the jamming threshold in the thermodynamic limit. Thus, we focus on an ensemble of st…
In the late 1980s, Sam Edwards proposed a possible statistical-mechanical framework to describe the properties of disordered granular materials. A key assumption underlying the theory was that all jammed packings are equally likely. In the intervening years it has never been possible to test this bold hypothesis directly. Here we present simulations that provide direct evidence that at the unjamming point, all packings of soft repulsive particles are equally likely, even though generically, jammed packings are not. Typically, jammed granular systems are observed precisely at the unjamming poin…

We report a numerical calculation of the total number of disordered jammed configurations $Ω$ of $N$ repulsive, three-dimensional spheres in a fixed volume $V$. To make these calculations tractable, we increase the computational efficiency of the approach of Xu et al. (Phys. Rev. Lett. 106, 245502 (2011)) and Asenjo et al. (Phys. Rev. Lett. 112, 098002 (2014)) and we extend the method to allow computation of the configurational entropy as a function of pressure. The approach that we use computes the configurational entropy by sampling the absolute volume of basins of attraction of the stable p…
Maximally random jammed (MRJ) sphere packing is a prototypical example of a system naturally poised at the margin between underconstraint and overconstraint. This marginal stability has traditionally been understood in terms of isostaticity, the equality of the number of mechanical contacts and the number of degrees of freedom. Quasicontacts, pairs of spheres on the verge of coming in contact, are irrelevant for static stability, but they come into play when considering dynamic stability, as does the distribution of contact forces. We show that the effects of marginal dynamic stability, as man…
We reveal significant qualitative differences in the rigidity transition of three types of disordered network materials: randomly diluted spring networks, jammed sphere packings, and stress-relieved networks that are diluted using a protocol that avoids the appearance of floppy regions. The marginal state of jammed and stress-relieved networks are globally isostatic, while marginal randomly diluted networks show both overconstrained and underconstrained regions. When a single bond is added to or removed from these isostatic systems, jammed networks become globally overconstrained or floppy, wh…
Elementary smooth functions (beyond contact) are employed to construct pair correlation functions that mimic jammed disordered sphere packings. Using the g2-invariant optimization method of Torquato and Stillinger [J. Phys. Chem. B 106, 8354, 2002], parameters in these functions are optimized under necessary realizability conditions to maximize the packing fraction phi and average number of contacts per sphere Z. A pair correlation function that incorporates the salient features of a disordered packing and that is smooth beyond contact is shown to permit a phi of 0.6850: this value represents …
The recently introduced nested sampling algorithm allows the direct and efficient calculation of the partition function of atomistic systems. We demonstrate its applicability to condensed phase systems with periodic boundary conditions by studying the three dimensional hard sphere model. Having obtained the partition function, we show how easy it is to calculate the compressibility and the free energy as functions of the packing fraction and local order, verifying that the transition to crystallinity has a very small barrier, and that the entropic contribution of jammed states to the free ener…
Systems of hard nonspherical particles exhibit a variety of stable phases with different degrees of translational and orientational order, including isotropic liquid, solid crystal, rotator and a variety of liquid crystal phases. In this paper, we employ a Monte Carlo implementation of the adaptive-shrinking-cell (ASC) numerical scheme and free-energy calculations to ascertain with high precision the equilibrium phase behavior of systems of congruent Archimedean truncated tetrahedra over the entire range of possible densities up to the maximal nearly space-filling density. In particular, we fi…
By calculating the linear response of packings of soft frictionless discs to quasistatic external perturbations, we investigate the critical scaling behavior of their elastic properties and non-affine deformations as a function of the distance to jamming. Averaged over an ensemble of similar packings, these systems are well described by elasticity, while in single packings we determine a diverging length scale $\ell^*$ up to which the response of the system is dominated by the local packing disorder. This length scale, which we observe directly, diverges as $1/Δz$, where $Δz$ is the difference…
We determine the linear viscoelastic response of jammed packings of athermal repulsive viscous spheres, a model for emulsions, wet foams, and soft colloidal suspensions. We numerically measure the complex shear modulus, a fundamental characterization of the response, and demonstrate that low frequency response displays dynamic critical scaling near unjamming. Viscoelastic shear response is governed by the relaxational eigenmodes of a packing. We use scaling arguments to explain the distribution of eigenrates, which develops a divergence at unjamming. We then derive the critical exponents chara…
We numerically analyse the density field of three-dimensional randomly jammed packings of monodisperse soft frictionles spherical particles, paying special attention to fluctuations occurring at large lengthscales. We study in detail the two-point static structure factor at low wavevectors in Fourier space. We also analyse the nature of the density field in real space by studying the large-distance behavior of the two-point pair correlation function, of density fluctuations in subsystems of increasing sizes, and of the direct correlation function. We show that such real space analysis can be g…
We have formulated the problem of generating periodic dense paritcle packings as an optimization problem called the Adaptive Shrinking Cell (ASC) formulation [S. Torquato and Y. Jiao, Phys. Rev. E {\bf 80}, 041104 (2009)]. Because the objective function and impenetrability constraints can be exactly linearized for sphere packings with a size distribution in $d$-dimensional Euclidean space $\mathbb{R}^d$, it is most suitable and natural to solve the corresponding ASC optimization problem using sequential linear programming (SLP) techniques. We implement an SLP solution to produce robustly a wid…
The number of distinguishable inherent structures of a liquid is the key component to understanding the thermodynamics of glass formers. In the case of hard potential systems such as hard discs, spheres and ellipsoids, an inherent structure corresponds to a collectively jammed configuration. This work develops a tiling based approach to counting inherent structures that constructs packings by combining sets of elementary locally jammed structures but eliminates those final packings that either, do not tile space, or are not collectively jammed, through the use of tile incompatibility rules. Th…
Maximally random jammed states of hard spheres are prototypical glasses. We study the small wavenumber $k$ behavior of the structure factor $S(k)$ of overcompressed million-sphere packings as a function of density up to the jammed state. We find both a precursor to the glassy jammed state evident long before the jamming density is reached and an associated growing length scale, extracted from the volume integral of the direct correlation function $c(r)$, which diverges at the "critical" jammed state. We also define a nonequilibrium index $X$ and use it to demonstrate that the packings studied …
We present an analysis of finite-size effects in jammed packings of N soft, frictionless spheres at zero temperature. There is a 1/N correction to the discrete jump in the contact number at the transition so that jammed packings exist only above isostaticity. As a result, the canonical power-law scalings of the contact number and elastic moduli break down at low pressure. These quantities exhibit scaling collapse with a non-trivial scaling function, demonstrating that the jamming transition can be considered a phase transition. Scaling is achieved as a function of N in both 2 and 3 dimensions,…
We introduce a generalization of the well-known random sequential addition (RSA) process for hard spheres in $d$-dimensional Euclidean space $\mathbb{R}^d$. We show that all of the $n$-particle correlation functions of this nonequilibrium model, in a certain limit called the "ghost" RSA packing, can be obtained analytically for all allowable densities and in any dimension. This represents the first exactly solvable disordered sphere-packing model in arbitrary dimension. The fact that the maximal density $ϕ(\infty)=1/2^d$ of the ghost RSA packing implies that there may be disordered sphere pack…
