We perform extensive computational studies of two-dimensional static bidisperse disk packings using two distinct packing-generation protocols. The first involves thermally quenching equilibrated liquid configurations to zero temperature over a range of thermal quench rates $r$ and initial packing fractions followed by compression and decompression in small steps to reach packing fractions $ϕ_J$ at jamming onset. For the second, we seed the system with initial configurations that promote micro- and macrophase-separated packings followed by compression and decompression to $ϕ_J$. We find that amorphous, isostatic packings exist over a finite range of packing fractions from $ϕ_{\rm min} \le ϕ_J \le ϕ_{\rm max}$ in the large-system limit, with $ϕ_{\rm max} \approx 0.853$. In agreement with previous calculations, we obtain $ϕ_{\rm min} \approx 0.84$ for $r > r^*$, where $r^*$ is the rate above which $ϕ_J$ is insensitive to rate. We further compare the structural and mechanical properties of isostatic versus hyperstatic packings. The structural characterizations include the contact number, bond orientational order, and mixing ratios of the large and small particles. We find that the isostatic packings are positionally and compositionally disordered, whereas bond-orientational and compositional order increase with contact number for hyperstatic packings. In addition, we calculate the static shear modulus and normal mode frequencies of the static packings to understand the extent to which the mechanical properties of amorphous, isostatic packings are different from partially ordered packings. We find that the mechanical properties of the packings change continuously as the contact number increases from isostatic to hyperstatic.
We numerically study the static structure and the mechanical response of two-dimensional granular piles. The piles consist of polydisperse disks with and without friction. Special attention is paid for the rigid grain limit by examining the systems with various disk elasticities. It is shown that the static pile structure of frictionless disks becomes isostatic in the rigid limit, while the isostaticity of frictional pile depends on the pile forming procedure, but in the case of the infinite friction is effective, the structure becomes very close to isostatic in the rigid limit. The mechanical…
The average number of constraints per particle $< C_{total} >$ in mechanically stable systems of Platonic solids (except cubes) approaches the isostatic limit at the jamming point ($< C_{total} > \rightarrow 12$), though average number of contacts are hypostatic. By introducing angular alignment metrics to classify the degree of constraint imposed by each contact, constraints are shown to arise as a direct result of local orientational order reflected in edge-face and face-face alignment angle distributions. With approximately one face-face contact per particle at jamming chain-like face-face …
We study static packings of frictionless and frictional spheres in three dimensions, obtained via molecular dynamics simulations, in which we vary particle hardness, friction coefficient, and coefficient of restitution. Although frictionless packings of hard-spheres are always isostatic (with six contacts) regardless of construction history and restitution coefficient, frictional packings achieve a multitude of hyperstatic packings that depend on system parameters and construction history. Instead of immediately dropping to four, the coordination number reduces smoothly from $z=6$ as the frict…
An outstanding question in the physics of soft jammed packings concerns the nature of the correlations that arise near the unjamming transition. In this work, we treat unjamming as a constraint satisfaction problem and demonstrate that a static correlation function, which probes sensitivity to boundary conditions, exhibits a diverging correlation length as the packing is decompressed. This length scale is related to isostaticity, and has been connected earlier to the existence of soft modes in isostatic packings. The form of the correlation function is remarkably similar to one predicted in the…
We consider a system of hard spheres close to jamming, where translation invariance is broken by pinning a randomly chosen set of particles. Using two different protocols, we generate two kinds of packings at the jamming point, isostatic and hyperstatic packings. In the case where the packings are isostatic, jamming transition is not affected by random pinning: the jamming density is only slightly reduced, a generalized isostaticity condition holds, the system is marginally rigid over the entire glass phase, and the typical structural signatures of jamming are unchanged. Besides, random pinnin…
We investigate how forces spread through frictionless granular packs at the jamming transition. Previous work has indicated that such packs are isostatic, and thus obey a null stress law which, independent of the packing history, causes rays of stress to propagate away from a point force at oblique angles. Prior verifications of the null stress law have used a sequential packing method which yields packs with anisotropic packing histories. We create packs without this anisotropy, and then later break the symmetry by adding a boundary. Our isotropic packs are very sensitive, and their responses…
We analyze the geometric structure and mechanical stability of a complete set of isostatic and hyperstatic sphere packings obtained via exact enumeration. The number of nonisomorphic isostatic packings grows exponentially with the number of spheres $N$, and their diversity of structure and symmetry increases with increasing $N$ and decreases with increasing hyperstaticity $H \equiv N_c - N_{ISO}$, where $N_c$ is the number of pair contacts and $N_{ISO} = 3N-6$. Maximally contacting packings are in general neither the densest nor the most symmetric. Analyses of local structure show that the fra…
By calculating the linear response of packings of soft frictionless discs to quasistatic external perturbations, we investigate the critical scaling behavior of their elastic properties and non-affine deformations as a function of the distance to jamming. Averaged over an ensemble of similar packings, these systems are well described by elasticity, while in single packings we determine a diverging length scale $\ell^*$ up to which the response of the system is dominated by the local packing disorder. This length scale, which we observe directly, diverges as $1/Δz$, where $Δz$ is the difference…
Amorphous packings of frictionless, spherical particles are isostatic at jamming onset, with the number of constraints (contacts) equal to the number of degrees of freedom. Their structural and mechanical properties are controlled by the interparticle contact network. In contrast, amorphous packings of frictional particles are typically hyperstatic at jamming onset. We perform extensive numerical simulations in two dimensions of the geometrical asperity (GA) model for static friction, to further investigate the role of isostaticity. In the GA model, interparticle forces are obtained by summing…
We perform computational studies of static packings of a variety of nonspherical particles including circulo-lines, circulo-polygons, ellipses, asymmetric dimers, and dumbbells to determine which shapes form hypostatic versus isostatic packings and to understand why hypostatic packings of nonspherical particles can be mechanically stable despite having fewer contacts than that predicted from naïve constraint counting. To generate highly accurate force- and torque-balanced packings of circulo-lines and -polygons, we developed an interparticle potential that gives continuous forces and torques a…
We propose a theoretical framework for predicting the protocol dependence of the jamming transition for frictionless spherical particles that interact via purely repulsive contact forces. We study isostatic jammed disk packings obtained via two protocols: isotropic compression and simple shear. We show that for frictionless systems, all jammed packings can be obtained via either protocol. However, the probability to obtain a particular jammed packing depends on the packing-generation protocol. We predict the average shear strain required to induce jamming in initially unjammed packings from th…
Due to significant computational expense, discrete element method simulations of jammed packings of size-dispersed spheres with size ratios greater than 1:10 have remained elusive, limiting the correspondence between simulations and real-world granular materials with large size dispersity. Invoking a recently developed neighbor binning algorithm, we generate mechanically-stable jammed packings of frictionless spheres with power-law size distributions containing up to nearly four million particles with size ratios up to 1:100. By systematically varying the width and exponent of the underlying p…
We present an analysis of finite-size effects in jammed packings of N soft, frictionless spheres at zero temperature. There is a 1/N correction to the discrete jump in the contact number at the transition so that jammed packings exist only above isostaticity. As a result, the canonical power-law scalings of the contact number and elastic moduli break down at low pressure. These quantities exhibit scaling collapse with a non-trivial scaling function, demonstrating that the jamming transition can be considered a phase transition. Scaling is achieved as a function of N in both 2 and 3 dimensions,…
Some remarkable generic properties, related to isostaticity and potential energy minimization, of equilibrium configurations of assemblies of rigid, frictionless grains are studied. Isostaticity -the uniqueness of the forces, once the list of contacts is known- is established in a quite general context, and the important distinction between isostatic problems under given external loads and isostatic (rigid) structures is presented. Complete rigidity is only guaranteed, on stability grounds, in the case of spherical cohesionless grains. Otherwise, the network of contacts might deform elasticall…
We simulate numerically the compression driven jamming of athermal, frictionless, soft-core spherocylinders in two dimensions, for a range of particle aspect ratios $α$. We find the critical packing fraction $ϕ_J(α)$ for the jamming transition, and the average number of contacts per particle $z_J(α)$ at jamming. We find that both are nonmonotonic, with a peak at $α\approx 1$. We find that configurations at the compression driven jamming point are always hypostatic for all $α$, with $z_J<z_\mathrm{iso}=2d_f=6$ the isostatic value. We show that, for moderately elongated spherocylinders, there is…
The formation of self-organised structures that resist shear deformation have been discussed in the context of shear jamming and thickening[1-3], with frictional forces playing a key role. However, shear induces geometric features necessary for jamming even in frictionless packings[4]. We analyse conditions for jamming in such assemblies by solving force and torque balance conditions for their contact geometry. We demonstrate, and validate with frictional simulations, that the isostatic condition for mean contact number Z = D + 1 (for spatial dimension D = 2, 3) holds at jamming for both finit…
We find that unjammed packings of frictionless particles with rather weak attraction can always be driven into solid-like states by shear. The structure of shear-driven solids evolves continuously with packing fraction from gel-like to jamming-like, but is almost independent of the shear stress. In contrast, both the density of vibrational states (DOVS) and force network evolve progressively with the shear stress. There exists a packing fraction independent shear stress $σ_c$, at which the shear-driven solids are isostatic and have a flattened DOVS. Solid-like states induced by a shear stress …
Using a previously developed experimental method to reduce friction in mechanically stable packings of disks, we find that frictional packings form tree-like structures of geometrical families that lie on reduced dimensional manifolds in configuration space. Each branch of the tree begins at a point in configuration space with an isostatic number of contacts and spreads out to sequentially higher dimensional manifolds as the number of contacts are reduced. We find that gravitational deposition of disks produces an initially under-coordinated packing stabilized by friction on a high-dimensional…
Three-dimensional discrete numerical simulation is used to investigate the properties of close-packed frictionless granular assemblies as a function of particle polydispersity and shape. Unlike some experimental results, simulations show that disordered packings of pinacoids (eight-face convex polyhedron) achieve higher solid fraction values than amorphous packings of spherical or rounded particles, thus fulfilling the analogue of Ulam's conjecture stated by Jiao and co-workers for random packings [Y. Jiao and S. Torquato, Phys. Rev. E $\textbf{84}$, $041309$ ($2011$)]. This seeming discrepanc…
We compare the structural and mechanical properties of static packings composed of frictionless convex (ellipses) and concave (rigid dimers) particles in two dimensions. We employ numerical simulations to generate static packings and measure the shear stress in response to applied simple shear strain as a function of the aspect ratio and amount of compression. We find that the behavior near jamming is significantly different for ellipses and dimers even though both shapes are roughly characterized by the aspect ratio and possess the same number of translational and rotational degrees of freedo…
We develop a theoretical description for mechanically stable frictional packings in terms of the difference between the total number of contacts required for isostatic packings of frictionless disks and the number of contacts in frictional packings, $m=N_c^0-N_c$. The saddle order $m$ represents the number of unconstrained degrees of freedom that a static packing would possess if friction were removed. Using a novel numerical method that allows us to enumerate disk packings for each $m$, we show that the probability to obtain a packing with saddle order $m$ at a given static friction coefficie…
Recent studies show that volume fractions $\phiJ$ at the jamming transition of frictionless hard spheres and discs are not uniquely determined but exist over a continuous range. Motivated by this observation, we numerically investigate dependence of $\phiJ$ on the initial configurations of the parent fluids equilibrated at a fraction $\phiini$, before compressing to generate a jammed packing. We find that $\phiJ$ remains constant when $\phiini$ is small but sharply increases when $\phiini$ exceeds the dynamic transition point which the mode-coupling theory predicts. We carefully analyze config…
The local structure of disordered jammed packings of monodisperse spheres without friction, generated by the Lubachevsky-Stillinger algorithm, is studied for packing fractions above and below 64%. The structural similarity of the particle environments to fcc or hcp crystalline packings (local crystallinity) is quantified by order metrics based on rank-four Minkowski tensors. We find a critical packing fraction ϕ_c \approx 0.649, distinctly higher than previously reported values for the contested random close packing limit. At ϕ_c, the probability of finding local crystalline configurations fir…
We carry out numerical studies of static packings of frictionless superellipsoidal particles in three spatial dimensions. We consider more than $200$ different particle shapes by varying the three shape parameters that define superellipsoids. We characterize the structural and mechanical properties of both disordered and ordered packings using two packing-generation protocols. We perform athermal quasi-static compression simulations starting from either random, dilute configurations (Protocol 1) or thermalized, dense configurations (protocol $2$), which allows us to tune the orientational orde…
In stark contrast to the jamming of frictionless hard-sphere (hard-disk if in two dimensions) packings, the critical jamming of frictional packings is much more elusive and still under intense debate. Here we show that frictional hard-disk packings self-organize near a critical jamming state when subjected to quasi-static steady-state cyclic shear, displaying scale-free fluctuations in particle velocity fields as characterized by the power spectra $E(k)\propto k^{-α}$ for both longitudinal and transverse modes in wavevector space, with $α\approx2.0\pm0.15$, and the nearly flat spectra $E(ω)\pr…
The nature of randomness in disordered packings of frictional and frictionless spheres is investigated using theory and simulations of identical spherical grains. The entropy of the packings is defined through the force and volume ensemble of jammed matter and shown difficult to calculate analytically. A mesoscopic ensemble of isostatic states is then utilized in an effort to predict the entropy through the defnition of a volume function dependent on the coordination number. Equations of state are obtained relating entropy, volume fraction and compactivity characterizing the different states o…
