Hyperuniform many-particle distributions possess a local number variance that grows more slowly than the volume of an observation window, implying that the local density is effectively homogeneous beyond a few characteristic length scales. Previous work on maximally random strictly jammed sphere packings in three dimensions has shown that these systems are hyperuniform and possess unusual quasi-long-range pair correlations, resulting in anomalous logarithmic growth in the number variance. However, recent work on maximally random jammed sphere packings with a size distribution has suggested that such quasi-long-range correlations and hyperuniformity are not universal among jammed hard-particle systems. In this paper we show that such systems are indeed hyperuniform with signature quasi-long-range correlations by characterizing the more general local-volume-fraction fluctuations. We argue that the regularity of the void space induced by the constraints of saturation and strict jamming overcomes the local inhomogeneity of the disk centers to induce hyperuniformity in the medium with a linear small-wavenumber nonanalytic behavior in the spectral density, resulting in quasi-long-range spatial correlations. A numerical and analytical analysis of the pore-size distribution for a binary MRJ system in addition to a local characterization of the n-particle loops governing the void space surrounding the inclusions is presented in support of our argument. This paper is the first part of a series of two papers considering the relationships among hyperuniformity, jamming, and regularity of the void space in hard-particle packings.
Hyperuniformity characterizes a state of matter that is poised at a critical point at which density or volume-fraction fluctuations are anomalously suppressed at infinite wavelengths. Recently, much attention has been given to the link between strict jamming and hyperuniformity in frictionless hard-particle packings. Doing so requires one to study very large packings, which can be difficult to jam properly. We modify the rigorous linear programming method of Donev et al. [J. Comp. Phys. 197, 139 (2004)] in order to test for jamming in putatively jammed packings of hard-disks in two dimensions.…
We extend the results from the first part of this series of two papers by examining hyperuniformity in heterogeneous media composed of impenetrable anisotropic inclusions. Specifically, we consider maximally random jammed packings of hard ellipses and superdisks and show that these systems both possess vanishing infinite-wavelength local-volume-fraction fluctuations and quasi-long-range pair correlations. Our results suggest a strong generalization of a conjecture by Torquato and Stillinger [Phys. Rev. E. 68, 041113 (2003)], namely that all strictly jammed saturated packings of hard particles,…
We show that quasi-long-range (QLR) pair correlations that decay asymptotically with scaling $r^{-(d+1)}$ in $d$-dimensional Euclidean space $\mathbb{R}^d$, trademarks of certain quantum systems and cosmological structures, are a universal signature of maximally random jammed (MRJ) hard-particle packings. We introduce a novel hyperuniformity descriptor in MRJ packings by studying local-volume-fraction fluctuations and show that infinite-wavelength fluctuations vanish even for packings with size- and shape-distributions. Special void statistics induce hyperuniformity and QLR pair correlations.
Jamming is a geometric phase transition occurring in dense particle systems in the absence of temperature. We use computer simulations to analyse the effect of thermal fluctuations on several signatures of the transition. We show that scaling laws for bulk and shear moduli only become relevant when thermal fluctuations are extremely small, and propose their relative ratio as a quantitative signature of jamming criticality. Despite the nonequilibrium nature of the transition, we find that thermally induced fluctuations and mechanical responses obey equilibrium fluctuation-dissipation relations …
We relate the structure factor $S(\mathbf{k} \to \mathbf{0})$ in a system of jammed hard spheres of number density $ρ$ to its complexity per particle $Σ(ρ)$ by the formula $S(\mathbf{k} \to \mathbf{0})=-1/ [ρ^2Σ''(ρ)+2ρΣ'(ρ)]$. We have verified this formula for the case of jammed disks in a narrow channel, for which it is possible to find $Σ(ρ)$ and $S(\mathbf{k})$ analytically. Hyperuniformity, which is the vanishing of $S(\mathbf{k} \to \mathbf{0})$, will therefore not occur if the complexity is nonzero. An example is given of a jammed state of hard disks in a narrow channel which is hyperun…
The suppression of density fluctuations at different length scales is the hallmark of hyperuniformity. However, its existence and significance in jammed solids is still a matter of debate. We explore the presence of this hidden order in a manybody interacting model known to exhibit a rigidity transition, and find that in contrary to exisiting speculations, density fluctuations in the rigid phase are only suppressed up to a finite lengthscale. This length scale grows and diverges at the critical point of the rigidity transition, such that the system is hyperuniform in the fluid phase. This sugg…
We numerically study the jamming transition of frictionless polydisperse spheres in three dimensions. We use an efficient thermalisation algorithm for the equilibrium hard sphere fluid and generate amorphous jammed packings over a range of critical jamming densities that is about three times broader than in previous studies. This allows us to reexamine a wide range of structural properties characterizing the jamming transition. Both isostaticity and the critical behavior of the pair correlation function hold over the entire range of jamming densities. At intermediate length scales, we find a w…
This review describes the diversity of jammed configurations attainable by frictionless convex nonoverlapping (hard) particles in Euclidean spaces and for that purpose it stresses individual-packing geometric analysis. A fundamental feature of that diversity is the necessity to classify individual jammed configurations according to whether they are locally, collectively, or strictly jammed. Each of these categories contains a multitude of jammed configurations spanning a wide and (in the large system limit) continuous range of intensive properties, including packing fraction $ϕ$, mean contact …
In the first two papers of this series, we characterized the structure of maximally random jammed (MRJ) sphere packings across length scales by computing a variety of different correlation functions, spectral functions, hole probabilities, and local density fluctuations. From the remarkable structural features of the MRJ packings, especially its disordered hyperuniformity, exceptional physical properties can be expected. Here, we employ these structural descriptors to estimate effective transport and electromagnetic properties via rigorous bounds, exact expansions, and accurate analytical appr…
In 1989, Sir Sam Edwards made the visionary proposition to treat jammed granular materials using a volume ensemble of equiprobable jammed states in analogy to thermal equilibrium statistical mechanics, despite their inherent athermal features. Since then, the statistical mechanics approach for jammed matter has garnered an extraordinary amount of attention by both theorists and experimentalists. Here, we review a systematic approach to jammed matter based on the Edwards statistical mechanical ensemble. We discuss the construction of microcanonical and canonical ensembles based on the volume fu…
Disordered jammed packings under confinement have received considerably less attention than their \textit{bulk} counterparts and yet arise in a variety of practical situations. In this work, we study binary sphere packings that are confined between two parallel hard planes, and generalize the Torquato-Jiao (TJ) sequential linear programming algorithm [Phys. Rev. E {\bf 82}, 061302 (2010)] to obtain putative maximally random jammed (MRJ) packings that are exactly isostatic with high fidelity over a large range of plane separation distances $H$, small to large sphere radius ratio $α$ and small s…
We show that an analogy between crowding in fluid and jammed phases of hard spheres captures the density dependence of the kissing number for a family of numerically generated jammed states. We extend this analogy to jams of mixtures of hard spheres in $d=3$ dimensions, and thus obtain an estimate of the random close packing (RCP) volume fraction, $ϕ_{\textrm{RCP}}$, as a function of size polydispersity. We first consider mixtures of particle sizes with discrete distributions. For binary systems, we show agreement between our predictions and simulations, using both our own and results reported…
Disordered hyperuniformity is a state of matter which has isotropic liquid like properties while simultaneously having crystalline like properties such as little variation in the density fluctuations over long distances. Such states arise for the packing of photoreceptor cells in chicken eyes, jammed particle assemblies, and in nonequilibrium systems. An open question is what possible applications could utilize properties of hyperuniformity. One of the major issues for applications of type-II superconductors is how to achieve high critical currents by preventing the motion or depinning of vort…
Dynamical signatures are known to precede jamming in hard-particle systems, but static structural signatures have proven more elusive. The observation that compressing hard-particle packings towards jamming causes growing hyperuniformity has paved the way for the analysis of jamming as an "inverted critical point" in which the direct correlation function $c(r)$ diverges. We establish quantitative relationships between various singularities in $c(r)$ and the total correlation function $h(r)$ that provide a concrete means of identifying features that must be expressed in $c(r)$ if one hopes to r…
Disordered and hyperuniform structures of densely packed spheres near and at jamming are characterized by vanishing of long-wavelength density fluctuations, or equivalently by long-range power-law decay of the direct correlation function (DCF). We focus on previous simulation results that exhibit degradation of hyperuniformity in jammed structures while maintaining the long-range nature of the DCF to a certain length scale. Here we demonstrate that a field-theoretic formulation of the stochastic density functional theory is relevant to explore the degradation mechanism. The strong-coupling exp…
We provide numerical constructions of one-dimensional hyperuniform many-particle distributions that exhibit unusual clustering and asymptotic local number density fluctuations growing more slowly than the volume of an observation window but faster than the surface area. By targeting a specified form of the structure factor at small wavenumbers using collective density variables, we are able to tailor the form of asymptotic local density fluctuations while simultaneously measuring the effect of imposing weak and strong constraints on the available degrees of freedom within the system. Even in o…
We explore quantitative descriptors that herald when a many-particle system in $d$-dimensional Euclidean space $\mathbb{R}^d$ approaches a hyperuniform state as a function of the relevant control parameter. We establish quantitative criteria to ascertain the extent of hyperuniform and nonhyperuniform distance-scaling regimes n terms of the ratio $B/A$, where $A$ is "volume" coefficient and $B$ is "surface-area" coefficient associated with the local number variance $σ^2(R)$ for a spherical window of radius $R$. To complement the known direct-space representation of the coefficient $B$ in terms …
