Vibrational spectra and normal modes of mechanically stable particle packings in three dimensions are analyzed over a range of compressions, from near the jamming transition, where the packings lose their rigidity, to far above it. At high frequency, the normal modes are localized at all compressions. At low frequency, the nature of the modes depends somewhat on compression. At large compressions, far from the transition, the lowest-frequency normal modes have some plane-wave character, though less than one would expect for a crystalline or isotropic solid. At low compressions near the jamming transition, the lowest-frequency modes are neither plane-wave-like nor localized. We characterize these differences, highlighting the unusual dispersion behavior that emerges for marginally jammed solids.
The evolution of the force distributions during the isotropic compression of two dimensional packings of soft frictional particles is investigated numerically. Regardless of the applied deformation, the normal contact force distribution can be fitted by the product of a power-law, and a stretched exponential, while the tangential force distribution is fitted well by a Gaussian. With increasing strain, the asymptotic behavior at large forces does not change, but both normal and tangential distributions exhibit a broadening, even though, when scaled with the average forces, their widths decrease…
Using random walk simulations we explore diffusive transport through monodisperse sphere packings over a range of packing fractions, $ϕ$, in the vicinity of the jamming transition at $ϕ_{c}$. Various diffusion properties are computed over several orders of magnitude in both time and packing pressure. Two well-separated regimes of normal, "Fickian" diffusion, where the mean squared displacement is linear in time, are observed. The first corresponds to diffusion inside individual spheres, while the latter is the long-time bulk diffusion. The intermediate anomalous diffusion regime and the long-t…
We determine the linear viscoelastic response of jammed packings of athermal repulsive viscous spheres, a model for emulsions, wet foams, and soft colloidal suspensions. We numerically measure the complex shear modulus, a fundamental characterization of the response, and demonstrate that low frequency response displays dynamic critical scaling near unjamming. Viscoelastic shear response is governed by the relaxational eigenmodes of a packing. We use scaling arguments to explain the distribution of eigenrates, which develops a divergence at unjamming. We then derive the critical exponents chara…
In 1989, Sir Sam Edwards made the visionary proposition to treat jammed granular materials using a volume ensemble of equiprobable jammed states in analogy to thermal equilibrium statistical mechanics, despite their inherent athermal features. Since then, the statistical mechanics approach for jammed matter has garnered an extraordinary amount of attention by both theorists and experimentalists. Here, we review a systematic approach to jammed matter based on the Edwards statistical mechanical ensemble. We discuss the construction of microcanonical and canonical ensembles based on the volume fu…
A granular-matter model is exactly solved, where disks of two sizes and weights in alternating sequence are confined to a narrow channel. The axis of the channel is horizontal and its plane vertical. Disk sizes and channel width are such that under jamming no disks remain loose and all disks touch one wall. Jammed microstates are characterized via statistically interacting particles constructed out of two-disk tiles. Jammed macrostates depend on measures of expansion work, gravitational potential energy, and intensity of random agitations before jamming. The dependence of configurational entro…
Disks of two sizes and weights in alternating sequence are confined to a long and narrow channel. The axis of the channel is horizontal and its plane vertical. The channel is closed off by pistons that freeze jammed microstates out of loose disk configurations subject to moderate pressure, gravity, and random agitations. Disk sizes and channel width are such that under jamming no disk remains loose and all disks touch one wall. We present exact results for the characterization of jammed macrostates including volume and entropy. The rigorous analysis divides the disk sequences of jammed microst…
We perform extensive computational studies of two-dimensional static bidisperse disk packings using two distinct packing-generation protocols. The first involves thermally quenching equilibrated liquid configurations to zero temperature over a range of thermal quench rates $r$ and initial packing fractions followed by compression and decompression in small steps to reach packing fractions $ϕ_J$ at jamming onset. For the second, we seed the system with initial configurations that promote micro- and macrophase-separated packings followed by compression and decompression to $ϕ_J$. We find that am…
The structural properties of static, jammed packings of monodisperse spheres in the vicinity of the jamming transition are investigated using large-scale computer simulations. At small wavenumber $k$, we argue that the anomalous behavior in the static structure factor, $S(k) \sim k$, is consequential of an excess of low-frequency, collective excitations seen in the vibrational spectrum. This anomalous feature becomes more pronounced closest to the jamming transition, such that $S(0) \to 0$ at the transition point. We introduce an appropriate dispersion relation that accounts for these phenomen…
We study the vibrational properties near a free surface of disordered spring networks derived from jammed sphere packings. In bulk systems, without surfaces, it is well understood that such systems have a plateau in the density of vibrational modes extending down to a frequency scale $ω^*$. This frequency is controlled by $ΔZ = \langle Z \rangle - 2d$, the difference between the average coordination of the spheres and twice the spatial dimension, $d$, of the system, which vanishes at the jamming transition. In the presence of a free surface we find that there is a density of disordered vibrati…
Jammed particulate systems, such as granular media, colloids, and foams, interact via one-sided forces that are nonzero only when particles overlap. We find that systems with one-sided repulsive interactions possess no linear response regime in the large system limit ($N\rightarrow \infty$) for all pressures $p$ (or compressions $Δϕ$), and for all $N$ near jamming onset $p\rightarrow 0$. We perform simulations on 2D frictionless bidisperse mechanically stable disk packings over a range of packing fractions $Δϕ= ϕ-ϕ_J$ above jamming onset $ϕ_J$. We apply perturbations with amplitude $δ$ to the …
We generate and study an ensemble of isostatic jammed hard-sphere lattices. These lattices are obtained by compression of a periodic system with an adaptive unit cell containing a single sphere until the point of mechanical stability. We present detailed numerical data about the densities, pair correlations, force distributions, and structure factors of such lattices. We show that this model retains many of the crucial structural features of the classical hard-sphere model and propose it as a model for the jamming and glass transitions that enables exploration of much higher dimensions than ar…
This review describes the diversity of jammed configurations attainable by frictionless convex nonoverlapping (hard) particles in Euclidean spaces and for that purpose it stresses individual-packing geometric analysis. A fundamental feature of that diversity is the necessity to classify individual jammed configurations according to whether they are locally, collectively, or strictly jammed. Each of these categories contains a multitude of jammed configurations spanning a wide and (in the large system limit) continuous range of intensive properties, including packing fraction $ϕ$, mean contact …
As a function of packing fraction at zero temperature and applied stress, an amorphous packing of spheres exhibits a jamming transition where the system is sensitive to boundary conditions even in the thermodynamic limit. Upon further compression, the system should become insensitive to boundary conditions provided it is sufficiently large. Here we explore the linear response to a large class of boundary perturbations in 2 and 3 dimensions. We consider each finite packing with periodic-boundary conditions as the basis of an infinite square or cubic lattice and study properties of vibrational m…
A quantum jammed state can be seen as a state where the phase space available to particles shrinks to zero, an interpretation quite accurate in integrable systems, where stable quasiparticles scatter elastically. We consider the integrable dual folded XXZ model, which is equivalent to the XXZ model in the limit of large anisotropy. We perform a jamming-breaking localised measurement in a jammed state. We find that jamming is locally restored, but local observables exhibit nontrivial time evolution on macroscopic, ballistic scales, without ever relaxing back to their initial values.
To better understand the surprising low-frequency vibrational modes in structural glasses, we study the spectra of a large ensemble of sparse random matrices where disorder is controlled by the distribution of bond weights and network coordination. We find $D(ω)$ has three regimes: a very-low-frequency regime that can be predicted analytically using extremal statistics, an intermediate regime with quasi-localized modes, and a plateau with $D(ω) \sim ω^0$. In the special case of uniform bond weights, the intermediate regime displays $D(ω) \sim ω^4$, independent of network coordination and syste…
Granular material on an inclined plane will flow like a fluid if the angle $θ$ the plane makes with the horizontal is large enough. We employ a modification of a hydrodynamic model introduced previously to describe Couette flow experiments to describe chute flow down a plane. In this geometry, our model predicts a jammed-to-flowing transition as $θ$ is increased even though it does not include solid friction, which might seem necessary to stabilize a state without flow. The transition is driven by coupling between mean and fluctuating velocity. In agreement with experiments and simulations, it…
The shear response of soft solids can be modeled with linear elasticity, provided the forcing is slow and weak. Both of these approximations must break down when the material loses rigidity, such as in foams and emulsions at their (un)jamming point -- suggesting that the window of linear elastic response near jamming is exceedingly narrow. Yet precisely when and how this breakdown occurs remains unclear. To answer these questions, we perform computer simulations of stress relaxation and shear startup experiments in athermal soft sphere packings, the canonical model for jamming. By systematical…
Packing problems have been a source of fascination for millenia and their study has produced a rich literature that spans numerous disciplines. Investigations of hard-particle packing models have provided basic insights into the structure and bulk properties of condensed phases of matter, including low-temperature states (e.g., molecular and colloidal liquids, crystals and glasses), multiphase heterogeneous media, granular media, and biological systems. The densest packings are of great interest in pure mathematics, including discrete geometry and number theory. This perspective reviews pertin…
Numerous soft materials jam into an amorphous solid at high packing fraction. This non-equilibrium phase transition is best understood in the context of a model system in which particles repel elastically when they overlap. Recently, however, it was shown that introducing any finite amount of attraction between particles changes the universality class of the transition. The properties of this new ``sticky jamming'' class remain almost entirely unexplored. We use molecular dynamics simulations and scaling analysis to determine the shear modulus, bulk modulus, and coordination of marginal solids…
The recently introduced nested sampling algorithm allows the direct and efficient calculation of the partition function of atomistic systems. We demonstrate its applicability to condensed phase systems with periodic boundary conditions by studying the three dimensional hard sphere model. Having obtained the partition function, we show how easy it is to calculate the compressibility and the free energy as functions of the packing fraction and local order, verifying that the transition to crystallinity has a very small barrier, and that the entropic contribution of jammed states to the free ener…

Maximally random jammed states of hard spheres are prototypical glasses. We study the small wavenumber $k$ behavior of the structure factor $S(k)$ of overcompressed million-sphere packings as a function of density up to the jammed state. We find both a precursor to the glassy jammed state evident long before the jamming density is reached and an associated growing length scale, extracted from the volume integral of the direct correlation function $c(r)$, which diverges at the "critical" jammed state. We also define a nonequilibrium index $X$ and use it to demonstrate that the packings studied …
In the first paper of this series, we introduced Voronoi correlation functions to characterize the structure of maximally random jammed (MRJ) sphere packings across length scales. In the present paper, we determine a variety of correlation functions that can be rigorously related to effective physical properties of MRJ sphere packings and compare them to the corresponding statistical descriptors for overlapping spheres and equilibrium hard-sphere systems. Such structural descriptors arise in rigorous bounds and formulas for effective transport properties, diffusion and reactions constants, ela…
Dense random packings of hard particles are useful models of granular media and are closely related to the structure of nonequilibrium low-temperature amorphous phases of matter. Most work has been done for random jammed packings of spheres, and it is only recently that corresponding packings of nonspherical particles (e.g., ellipsoids) have received attention. Here we report a study of the maximally random jammed (MRJ) packings of binary superdisks and monodispersed superballs whose shapes are defined by |x_1|^2p+...+|x_2|^2p<=1 with d = 2 and 3, respectively, where p is the deformation param…
Hyperuniformity characterizes a state of matter that is poised at a critical point at which density or volume-fraction fluctuations are anomalously suppressed at infinite wavelengths. Recently, much attention has been given to the link between strict jamming and hyperuniformity in frictionless hard-particle packings. Doing so requires one to study very large packings, which can be difficult to jam properly. We modify the rigorous linear programming method of Donev et al. [J. Comp. Phys. 197, 139 (2004)] in order to test for jamming in putatively jammed packings of hard-disks in two dimensions.…
Typical quasistatic compression algorithms for generating jammed packings of athermal, purely repulsive particles begin with dilute configurations and then apply successive compressions with relaxation of the elastic energy allowed between each compression step. It is well-known that during isotropic compression athermal systems with purely repulsive interactions undergo a jamming transition at packing fraction $ϕ_J$ from an unjammed state with zero pressure to a jammed, rigid state with nonzero pressure. Using extensive computer simulations, we show that a novel second-order-like transition, …
The inherent structure landscape for a system of hard spheres confined to a hard cylindrical channel, such that spheres can only contact their first and second neighbours, is studied using an analytical model that extends previous results [Phys. Rev. Lett. 115, 025702 (2015)] to provide a comprehensive picture of jammed packings over a range of packing densities. In the model, a packing is described as an arrangement of $k$ helical sections, separated by defects, that have alternating helical twist directions and where all spheres satisfy local jamming constraints. The structure of each helica…
The Nagel-Schreckenberg traffic flow model shows a transition from a free flow regime to a jammed regime for increasing car density. The measurement of the dynamical structure factor offers the chance to observe the evolution of jams without the necessity to define a car to be jammed or not. Above the jamming transition the dynamical structure factor exhibits for a given k-value two maxima corresponding to the separation of the system into the free flow phase and jammed phase. We obtain from a finite-size scaling analysis of the smallest jam mode that approaching the transition long range corr…
By calculating the linear response of packings of soft frictionless discs to quasistatic external perturbations, we investigate the critical scaling behavior of their elastic properties and non-affine deformations as a function of the distance to jamming. Averaged over an ensemble of similar packings, these systems are well described by elasticity, while in single packings we determine a diverging length scale $\ell^*$ up to which the response of the system is dominated by the local packing disorder. This length scale, which we observe directly, diverges as $1/Δz$, where $Δz$ is the difference…
We investigate a traffic model in which cars either move freely with quenched intrinsic velocities or belong to clusters formed behind slower cars. In each cluster, the next-to-leading car is allowed to pass and resume free motion. The model undergoes a phase transition from a disordered phase for the high passing rate to a jammed phase for the low rate. In the disordered phase, the cluster size distribution decays exponentially in the large size limit. In the jammed phase, the cluster size distribution has a power law tail and in addition there is an infinite-size cluster. Mean-field equation…
The Nagel-Schreckenberg traffic flow model shows a transition from a free flow regime to a jammed regime for increasing car density. The measurement of the dynamical structure factor offers the chance to observe the evolution of jams without the necessity to define a car to be jammed or not. Above the jamming transition the dynamical structure factor $S(k,ω)$ exhibits for a given $k$-value two maxima corresponding to the separation of the system into the free flow phase and jammed phase. Analyzing the $k$-dependence of these maxima the backward velocity of the jams is measured. We find that th…
We study the influence of particle size asymmetry on structural evolution of randomly jammed binary sphere mixtures with varying large-sphere/small-sphere composition. Simulations of jammed packings are used to assess the transition from large-sphere dominant to small-sphere dominant mixtures. For weakly asymmetric particle sizes, packing properties evolve smoothly, but not monotonically, with increasing small sphere composition, $f$. Our simulations reveal that at high values of ratio $α$ of large to small sphere radii, ($α\geq α_c \approx 5.75$) evolution of structural properties such as pac…
We present a simple model to account for the rheological behavior observed in recent experiments on micellar gels. The model combines attachment-detachment kinetics with stretching due to shear, and shows well-defined jammed and flowing states. The large deviation function (LDF) for the coarse-grained velocity becomes increasingly non-quadratic as the applied force $F$ is increased, in a range near the yield threshold. The power fluctuations are found to obey a steady-state fluctuation relation (FR) at small $F$. However, the FR is violated when $F$ is near the transition from the flowing to t…
A new class of lattice gas models with trivial interactions but constrained dynamics are introduced. These are proven to exhibit a dynamical glass transition: above a critical density, rho_c, ergodicity is broken due to the appearance of an infinite spanning cluster of jammed particles. The fraction of jammed particles is discontinuous at the transition, while in the unjammed phase dynamical correlation lengths and timescales diverge as exp[C(rho_c-rho)^(-mu)]. Dynamic correlations display two-step relaxation similar to glass-formers and jamming systems.
Jamming criticality defines a universality class that includes systems as diverse as glasses, colloids, foams, amorphous solids, constraint satisfaction problems, neural networks, etc. A particularly interesting feature of this class is that small interparticle forces ($f$) and gaps ($h$) are distributed according to nontrivial power laws. A recently developed mean-field (MF) theory predicts the characteristic exponents of these distributions in the limit of very high spatial dimension, $d\rightarrow\infty$ and, remarkably, their values seemingly agree with numerical estimates in physically re…
Within the Nagel-Schreckenberg traffic flow model we consider the transition from the free flow regime to the jammed regime. We introduce a method of analyzing the data which is based on the local density distribution. This analyzes allows us to determine the phase diagram and to examine the separation of the system into a coexisting free flow phase and a jammed phase above the transition. The investigation of the steady state structure factor yields that the decomposition in this phase coexistence regime is driven by density fluctuations, provided they exceed a critical wavelength.
The suppression of density fluctuations at different length scales is the hallmark of hyperuniformity. However, its existence and significance in jammed solids is still a matter of debate. We explore the presence of this hidden order in a manybody interacting model known to exhibit a rigidity transition, and find that in contrary to exisiting speculations, density fluctuations in the rigid phase are only suppressed up to a finite lengthscale. This length scale grows and diverges at the critical point of the rigidity transition, such that the system is hyperuniform in the fluid phase. This sugg…
Jamming transition in traffic flow (between free and jammed traffic) for homogeneous car following model has been investigated taking into account fluctuations of characteristic acceleration/braking time. These fluctuations are defined by Ornstein-Uhlenbeck process. The behaviour of the most probable deviation of headway from its optimal value has been studied and phase diagram of the system has been calculated for supercritical and subcritical regimes of jam formation. It has been found that for the first regime the fluctuations of characteristic acceleration/braking time result in coexistenc…
The small wavenumber $k$ behavior of the structure factor $S(k)$ of overcompressed amorphous hard-sphere configurations was previously studied for a wide range of densities up to the maximally random jammed state, which can be viewed as a prototypical glassy state [A. Hopkins, F. H. Stillinger and S. Torquato, Phys. Rev. E, 86, 021505 (2012)]. It was found that a precursor to the glassy jammed state was evident long before the jamming density was reached as measured by a growing nonequilibrium length scale extracted from the volume integral of the direct correlation function $c(r)$, which beco…
It is suggested that the question of existence of a jamming phase transition in a broad class of single-lane cellular-automaton traffic models may be studied using a correspondence to the asymmetric chipping model. In models where such correspondence is applicable, jamming phase transition does not take place. Rather, the system exhibits a smooth crossover between free-flow and jammed states, as the car density is increased.
We propose a cellular automata model for vehicular traffic in cities by combining (and appropriately modifying) ideas borrowed from the Biham-Middleton-Levine (BML) model of city traffic and the Nagel-Schreckenberg (NS) model of highway traffic. We demonstrate a phase transition from the "free-flowing" dynamical phase to the completely "jammed" phase at a vehicle density which depends on the time periods of the synchronized signals and the separation between them. The intrinsic stochasticity of the dynamics, which triggers the onset of jamming, is similar to that in the NS model, while the phe…
