We investigate the spectral fluctuation properties of constrained ensembles of random matrices (defined by the condition that a number N(Q) of matrix elements vanish identically; that condition is imposed in unitarily invariant form) in the limit of large matrix dimension. We show that as long as N(Q) is smaller than a critical value (at which the quadratic level repulsion of the Gaussian unitary ensemble of random matrices may be destroyed) all spectral fluctuation measures have the same form as for the Gaussian unitary ensemble.

Recently, the supersymmetry method was extended from Gaussian ensembles to arbitrary unitarily invariant matrix ensembles by generalizing the Hubbard-Stratonovich transformation. Here, we complete this extension by including arbitrary orthogonally and unitary-symplectically invariant matrix ensembles. The results are equivalent to, but the approach is different from the superbosonization formula. We express our results in a unifying way. In this paper we study the characteristic or generating function of a certain discontinuous linear statistics of the Laguerre unitary ensembles and show that this is a particular fifth Painléve transcendant in the variable $t,$ the position of the discontinuity. The proof of the ladder operators adapted to orthogonal polynomial with discontinuous weight announced sometime ago is presented here, followed by the non-linear difference equations satisfied by two auxiliary quantities and the derivation of the Painléve equation.

Consider the circular unitary ensembles with an external potential which is periodic with the period comparable to the average spacing of the eigenvalues. We show that in this case the density of states is periodic and does not converge in the large matrix limit, but the local correlation functions converge to some simple combinations of the sine kernel and the potential. This paper deals with products and ratios of average characteristic polynomials for unitary ensembles. We prove universality at the soft edge of the limiting eigenvalues' density, and write the universal limit in function of the Kontsevich matrix model ("matrix Airy function", as originally named by Kontsevich). For the case of the hard edge, universality is already known. We show that also in this case the universal limit can be expressed as a matrix integral ("matrix Bessel function") known in the literature as generalized Kontsevich matrix model.
