Combinatorics of the geometry of Wilson loop diagrams I: equivalence classes via matroids and polytopes

Wilson loop diagrams are an important tool in studying scattering amplitudes of SYM $N=4$ theory and are known by previous work to be associated to positroids. We characterize the conditions under which two Wilson loop diagrams give the same positroid, prove that an important subclass of subdiagrams (exact subdiagrams) correspond to uniform matroids, and enumerate the number of different Wilson loop diagrams that correspond to each positroid cell. We also give a correspondence between those positroids which can arise from Wilson loop diagrams and directions in associahedra.

Wilson Loop diagrams and Positroids

In this paper, we study a new application of the positive Grassmanian to Wilson loop diagrams (or MHV diagrams) for scattering amplitudes in N=4 Super Yang-Mill theory ($N=4$ SYM). There has been much interest in studying this theory via the positive Grassmanians using BCFW recursion. This is the first attempt to study MHV diagrams for planar Wilson loop calculations (or planar amplitudes) in terms of positive Grassmannians. Wilson loops in finite Abelian lattice gauge theories

We consider lattice gauge theories on $\mathbb{Z}^4$ with Wilson action and structure group $\mathbb{Z}_n$. We compute the expectation of Wilson loop observables to leading order in the weak coupling regime, extending and refining a recent result of Chatterjee. Our proofs use neither duality relations nor cluster expansion techniques.

Wilson loops in Ising lattice gauge theory

Wilson loop expectation in 4D $\mathbb{Z}_2$ lattice gauge theory is computed to leading order in the weak coupling regime. This is the first example of a rigorous theoretical calculation of Wilson loop expectation in the weak coupling regime of a 4D lattice gauge theory. All prior results are either inequalities or strong coupling expansions.

Remarks on conformal invariants for piecewise smooth curves and Wilson loops

This short note is some obvious mathematical addendum to our papers on Wilson loops on polygon-like contours with circular edges \cite{Dorn:2020meb,Dorn:2020vzj}. Using the technique of osculating spheres and circles we identify the conformal invariants characterising the kinks (cusps) of generic piecewise smooth curves in 3-dimensional space.

The Wilson loop in the Gaussian Unitary Ensemble

Using the supersymmetric formalism we compute exactly at finite $N$ the expectation of the Wilson loop in the Gaussian Unitary Ensemble and derive an exact formula for the spectral density at finite $N$. We obtain the same result by a second method relying on enumerative combinatorics and show that it leads to a novel proof of the Harer-Zagier series formula.

Wilson Loop Expectations for Non-Abelian Gauge Fields Coupled to a Higgs Boson at Low and High Disorder

We consider computations of Wilson loop expectations to leading order at large $β$ in the case where a non-abelian gauge field interacts with a Higgs boson. By identifying the main order contributions from minimal vortices, we can express the Wilson loop expectations via an explicit Poisson random variable. This paper treats multiple cases of interests, including the Higgs boson at low and high disorder, and finds efficient polymer expansion like computations for each of these regimes.

Master Symmetry for Holographic Wilson Loops

We identify the symmetry underlying the recently observed spectral-parameter transformations of holographic Wilson loops alias minimal surfaces in AdS/CFT. The generator of this nonlocal symmetry is shown to furnish a raising operator on the classical Yangian-type charges of symmetric coset models. We explicitly demonstrate how this master symmetry acts on strong-coupling Wilson loops and indicate a possible extension to arbitrary coupling.

Abelian Dominance in Wilson Loops

It has been conjectured that the Abelian projection of QCD is responsible for the confinement of color. Using a gauge independent definition of the Abelian projection which does {\it not} employ any gauge fixing, we provide a strong evidence for the Abelian dominance in Wilson loop integral. In specific we prove that the gauge potential which contributes to the Wilson loop integral is precisely the one restricted by the Abelian projection.
