We characterize supramenable groups in terms of existence of invariant probability measures for partial actions on compact Hausdorff spaces and existence of tracial states on partial crossed products.
These characterizations show that, in general, one cannot decompose a partial crossed product of a C*-algebra by a semi-direct product of groups as two iterated partial crossed products. We give conditions which ensure that such decomposition is possible.
Nicolas Monod introduced the class of groups with the fixed-point property for cones, characterized by always admitting a non-zero fixed point whenever acting (suitably) on proper weakly complete cones. He proved that his class of groups contains the class of groups with subexponential growth and is contained in the class of supramenable groups. In this paper we investigate what Monod's results say about the existence of invariant traces on (typically non-unital) C*-algebras equipped with an action of a group with the fixed-point property for cones. As an application of these results we provid…
We define proper, free and commuting partial actions on upper semicontinuous bundles of $C^*-$algebras. With such, we construct the $C^*-$algebra induced by a partial action and a partial actions on that algebra. Using those action we give a generalization, to partial actions, of Raeburn's Symmetric Imprimitivity Theorem.
In this paper we investigate the interrelation between the topological freedom of partial actions of discrete groups and faithful representations of partial crossed products.
We show that any continuous partial action on a topological space has a unique enveloping action, i.e. it is the restriction of a global action. In the case of C^*-algebras we prove that any partial action has an enveloping action up to Morita equivalence. The study of enveloping actions up to Morita equivalence reveals the form that Takai duality takes for partial actions.
We prove that a partial action is amenable if and only if so is its Morita enveloping action. As applications we prove that any partial representation of a discrete group is positive definite, and we extend a result of Zeller-Meier concerning the amenability of discrete groups and the existence of invariant states to partial actions.
For a given inverse semigroup S , we introduce the notion of algebraic crossed product by using a given partial action of S, and we will prove that under some condition it is associative. Also we will introduce the concept of partial semigroup algebra K_{Par}(S) , and we show that the suitable quotient of K_{Par}(S) is a sort of crossed product.
We describe the envelope C*-algebra associated to a partial action of a countable discrete group on a locally compact space as a groupoid C*-algebra (more precisely as a C*-algebra from an equivalence relation) and we use our approach to show that, for a large class of partial actions of Z on the Cantor set, the envelope C*-algebra is an AF-algebra. We also completely characterize partial actions of a countable discrete group on a compact space such that the envelope action acts in a Hausdorff space.
Partial actions of groups on C*-algebras and the closely related actions and coactions of Hopf algebras received much attention over the last decades. They arise naturally as restrictions of their global counterparts to non-invariant subalgebras, and the ambient eveloping global (co)actions have proven useful for the study of associated crossed products. In this article, we introduce the partial coactions of C*-bialgebras, focussing on C*-quantum, and prove existence of an enveloping global coaction under mild technical assumptions. The construction of the latter provides a left adjoint to the…
In this work, for a given inverse semigroup we will define the crossed product of an inverse semigroup by a partial action. Also, we will associate to an inverse semigroup $G$ an inverse semigroup $S_G$, and we will prove that there is a correspondence between the covariant representation of $G$ and covariant representation of $S_G$. Finally, we will explore a connection between crossed products of an inverse semigroup actions and crossed products by partial actions of inverse semigroups.
In this paper we extend the constructions of Boava and Exel to present the C*-algebra associated with an injective endomorphism of a group with finite cokernel as a partial group algebra and consequently as a partial crossed product. With this representation we present another way to study such C*-algebras, only using tools from partial crossed products.
We present a different way to study the C*-algebra associated with an injective endomorphism of a group G of infinite cokernel. We follow the work of Boava and Exel to construct a partial crossed product representation of that C*-algebra and show properties only using such tools.
We bound the nuclear dimension of crossed products associated to some partial actions of finite groups or $\mathbb{Z}$ on finite dimensional locally compact Hausdorff second countable spaces. Our results apply to globalizable partial actions, finite group partial actions, minimal partial automorphisms, and partial automorphisms acting on zero-dimensional spaces, or a class of one dimensional spaces, containing $1$-dimensional CW complexes. This extends work on global systems by Hirshberg and Wu.
Partial actions of discrete abelian groups can be used to construct both groupoid C*-algebras and partial crossed product algebras. In each case there is a natural notion of an analytic subalgebra. We show that for countable subgroups of the real numbers and free partial actions, these constructions yield the same C*-algebras and the same analytic subalgebras. We also show that under suitable hypotheses an analytic partial crossed product preserves all the information in the dynamical system in the sense that two analytic partial crossed products are isomorphic as Banach algebras if, and only …
Building on previous papers by Anantharaman-Delaroche (AD) we introduce and study the notion of AD-amenability for partial actions and Fell bundles over discrete groups. We prove that the cross-sectional C*-algebra of a Fell bundle is nuclear if and only if the underlying unit fibre is nuclear and the Fell bundle is AD-amenable. If a partial action is globalisable, then it is AD-amenable if and only if its globalisation is AD-amenable. Moreover, we prove that AD-amenability is preserved by (weak) equivalence of Fell bundles and, using a very recent idea of Ozawa and Suzuki, we show that AD-ame…
We consider the amenability of groupoids $G$ equipped with a group valued cocycle $c:G\to Q$ with amenable kernel $c^{-1}(e)$. We prove a general result which implies, in particular, that $G$ is amenable whenever $Q$ is amenable and if there is countable set $D\subset G$ such that $c(G^{u})D=Q$ for all $u\in G^{(0)}$. We show that our result is applicable to groupoids arising from partial semigroup actions. We explore these actions in detail and show that these groupoids include those arising from directed graphs, higher rank graphs and even topological higher rank graphs. We believe our metho…
Let $X$ be a compact Hausdorff space. In this work we translate partial actions of $X$ to partial actions on some hyperspaces determined by $X,$ this gives an endofunctor $2^{-}$ in the category of partial actions on compact Hausdorff spaces which generates a monad in this category. Moreover, structural relations between partial actions $θ$ on $X$ and partial determined by $2^θ$ are established.
The recently developed theory of partial actions of discrete groups on $C^*$-algebras is extended. A related concept of actions of inverse semigroups on $C^*$-algebras is defined, including covariant representations and crossed products. The main result is that every partial crossed product is a crossed product by a semigroup action.
Given a partial action αof a group G on an associative algebra A we consider the crossed product A x_αG. Using the algebras of multipliers of ideals of A we prove that A x_αG is associative, provided that all ideals of A are idempotent. This generalizes a previous result on the associativity of A x_αG in the context of C*-algebras. We also give a criteria for the existence of a global extension of a given partial action on an algebra and use crossed products to study relations between partial actions of groups on algebras and partial representations. As an application we endow partial group al…
We extend the classicial notion of an outer action $α$ of a group $G$ on a unital ring $A$ to the case when $α$ is a partial action on ideals, all of which have local units. We show that if $α$ is an outer partial action of an abelian group $G$, then its associated partial skew group ring $A \star_αG$ is simple if and only if $A$ is $G$-simple. This result is applied to partial skew group rings associated with two different types of partial dynamical systems.
We define the decomposition property for partial actions of discrete groups on $C^*$-algebras. Decomposable partial systems appear naturally in practice, and many commonly occurring partial actions can be decomposed into partial actions with the decomposition property. For instance, any partial action of a finite group is an iterated extension of decomposable systems. Partial actions with the decomposition property are always globalizable and amenable, regardless of the acting group, and their globalization can be explicitly described in terms of certain global sub-systems. A direct computatio…
Partial actions of discrete groups on $C^*$-algebras and the associated crossed products have been studied by Exel and McClanahan. We characterise these crossed products in terms of the spectral subspaces of the dual coaction, generalising and simplifying a theorem of Exel for single partial automorphisms. We then use this characterisation to identify the Cuntz algebras and the Toeplitz algebras of Nica as crossed products by partial actions.
Let A be a unital ring which is a product of possibly infinitely many indecomposable rings. We establish criteria for the existence of a globalization for a given twisted partial action of a group on A. If the globalization exists, it is unique up to a certain equivalence relation and, moreover, the crossed product corresponding to the twisted partial action is Morita equivalent to that corresponding to its globalization. For arbitrary unital rings the globalization problem is reduced to an extendibility property of the multipliers involved in the twisted partial action.
We introduce the notion of continuous twisted partial actions of a locally compact group on a C*-algebra. With such, we construct an associated C*-algebraic bundle called the semidirect product bundle. Our main theorem shows that, given any C*-algebraic bundle which is second countable and whose unit fiber algebra is stable, there is a continuous twisted partial action of the base group on the unit fiber algebra, whose associated semidirect product bundle is isomorphic to the given one.
Given a group G, we construct, in a canonical way, an inverse semigroup S(G) associated to G. The actions of S(G) are shown to be in one-to-one correspondence with the partial actions of G, both in the case of actions on a set, and that of actions as operators on a Hilbert space. In other words, G and S(G) have the same representation theory. We show that S(G) governs the subsemigroup of all closed linear subspaces of a G-graded C*-algebra, generated by the grading subspaces. In the special case of finite groups, the maximum number of such subspaces is computed. A ``partial'' version of the gr…
Let $U$ and $V$ be open subsets of the Cantor set with finite disjoint complements, and let $h:U\to V$ be a homeomorphism with dense orbits. Building from the ideas of Herman, Putnam, and Skau, we show that the partial action induced by $h$ can be realized as the Vershik map on a Bratteli diagram, and that any two such diagrams are equivalent.
For a twisted partial action Θof a group G on an (associative non-necessarily unital) algebra A over a commutative unital ring k, the crossed product A X_ΘG is proved to be associative. Given a G-graded k-algebra B = \oplus_{g\in G}\B_g with the mild restriction of homogeneous non-degeneracy, a criteria is established for B to be isomorphic to the crossed product B_1 X_ΘG for some twisted partial action of G on B_1. The equality B_g\B_{g^{-1}}B_g = \B_g for all g\in G is one of the ingredients of the criteria, and if it holds and, moreover, B has enough local units, then it is shown that B is …
We study groupoid actions on left cancellative small categories and their associated Zappa-Szép products. We show that certain left cancellative small categories with nice length functions can be seen as Zappa-Szép products. We compute the associated tight groupoids, characterizing important properties of them, like being Hausdorff, effective and minimal. Finally, we determine amenability of the tight groupoid under mild, reasonable hypotheses.
In this work we present a new definition to the Partial Crossed Product by actions of inverse semigroups in a C^*-algebra, without using the covariant representations as Sieben did in [5]. Also we present an isomorphism between the partial crossed products by partial actions of a group G and the partial crossed product by actions of S(G), an inverse semigroup associated to G introduced by Exel in [2].
A discrete group $\G$ is called rigidly symmetric if the projective tensor product between the convolution algebra $\ell^1(\G)$ and any $C^*$-algebra $\A$ is symmetric. We show that in each topologically graded $C^*$-algebra over a rigidly symmetric group there is a $\ell^1$-type symmetric Banach $^*$-algebra, which is inverse closed in the $C^*$-algebra. This includes new general classes, as algebras admitting dual actions and partial crossed products. Results including convolution dominated kernels, inverse closedness with respect with ideals or weighted versions of the $\ell^1$-decay are in…
Given a finite group G acting as automorphisms on a ring A, the skew group ring A*G is an important tool for studying the structure of G-stable ideals of A. The ring A*G is G-graded, i.e.G coacts on A*G. The Cohen-Montgomery duality says that the smash product A*G#k[G]^* of A*G with the dual group ring k[G]^* is isomorphic to the full matrix ring M_n(A) over A, where n is the order of G. In this note we show how much of the Cohen-Montgomery duality carries over to partial group actions in the sense of R.Exel. In particular we show that the smash product (A*_αG)#k[G]^* of the partial skew group…
We study the interplay between Steinberg algebras and partial skew rings: For a partial action of a group in a Hausdorff, locally compact, totally disconnected topological space, we realize the associated partial skew group ring as a Steinberg algebra (over the transformation groupoid attached to the partial action). We then apply this realization to characterize diagonal preserving isomorphisms of partial skew group rings, over commutative algebras, in terms of continuous orbit equivalence of the associated partial actions. Finally, we show that any Steinberg algebra, associated to a Hausdorf…
We develop the notion of Rokhlin dimension for partial actions of finite groups, extending the well-established theory for global systems. The partial setting exhibits phenomena that cannot be expected for global actions, usually stemming from the fact that virtually all averaging arguments for finite group actions completely break down for partial systems. For example, fixed point algebra and crossed product are not in general Morita equivalent, and there is in general no local approximation of the crossed product $A\rtimes G$ by matrices over $A$. By using decomposition arguments for partial…
We show that the enveloping space $X_G$ of a partial action of a Polish group $G$ on a Polish space $X$ is a standard Borel space, that is to say, there is a topology $τ$ on $X_G$ such that $(X_G, τ)$ is Polish and the quotient Borel structure on $X_G$ is equal to $Borel(X_G,τ)$. To prove this result we show a generalization of a theorem of Burgess about Borel selectors for the orbit equivalence relation induced by a group action and also show that some properties of the Vaught's transform are valid for partial actions of groups.
We introduce a method to study C*-algebras possessing an action of the circle group, from the point of view of its internal structure and its K-theory. Under relatively mild conditions our structure Theorem shows that any C*-algebra, where an action of the circle is given, arises as the result of a construction that generalizes crossed products by the group of integers. Such a generalized crossed product construction is carried out for any partial automorphism of a C*-algebra, where by a partial automorphism we mean an isomorphism between two ideals of the given algebra. Our second main result…
Given an inverse semigroup $S$ endowed with a partial action on a topological space $X$, we construct a groupoid of germs $S\ltimes X$ in a manner similar to Exel's groupoid of germs, and similarly a partial action of $S$ on an algebra $A$ induces a crossed product $A\rtimes S$. We then prove, in the setting of partial actions, that if $X$ is locally compact Hausdorff and zero-dimensional, then the Steinberg algebra of the groupoid of germs $S\ltimes X$ is isomorphic to the crossed product $A_R(X)\rtimes S$, where $A_R(X)$ is the Steinberg algebra of $X$. We also prove that the converse holds,…
We present some generalizations of the well-known correspondence, found by R. Exel, between partial actions of a group $G$ on a set $X$ and semigroup homomorphism of $S(G)$ on the semigroup $I(X)$ of partial bijections of $X,$ being $S(G)$ an inverse monoid introduced by Exel. We show that any unital premorphism $θ:G\to S$, where $S$ is an inverse monoid, can be extended to a semigroup homomorphism $θ^*:T\to S$ for any inverse semigroup $T$ with $S(G)\subseteq T\subseteq P^*(G)\times G,$ being $P^*(G)$ the semigroup of non-empty subset of $G$, and such that $E(S)$ satisfies some lattice theore…

Given a finite alphabet $Λ$, and a not necessarily finite type subshift $X\subseteq Λ^\infty$, we introduce a partial action of the free group $F(Λ)$ on a certain compactification $Ω_X$ of $X$, which we call the spectral partial action. The space $Ω_X$ has already appeared in many papers in the subject, arising as the spectrum of a commutative C*-algebra usually denoted by ${\cal D}_X$. Since the descriptions given of $Ω_X$ in the literature are often somewhat terse and obscure, one of our main goals is to present a sensible model for it which allows for a detailed study of its structure, as w…
We study diagonal actions $φ:\mathbb{F}_2\curvearrowright\partial\mathbb{F}_2\times K$ on the Cantor set which are given by $φ_a=\partial_a\timesα,φ_b=\partial_b\timesβ$. Under some restrictions on $α,β$ we compute $K_*(C(\partial\mathbb{F}_2\times K)\rtimes_r\mathbb{F}_2)$. As an application in the case of $α$ is Denjoy homeomorphism of the Cantor set and $β=id$ we will show that $C(\partial\mathbb{F}_2\times K)\rtimes_r\mathbb{F}_2$ is Kirchberg algebra with $K_*(C(\partial\mathbb{F}_2\times K)\rtimes_r\mathbb{F}_2)=(\mathbb{Z}^\infty,\mathbb{Z}^\infty)$. Also we will check that $C^*$-crosse…
Let $\A$ be a ring with local units, $\E$ a set of local units for $\A$, $\G$ an abelian group and $α$ a partial action of $\G$ by ideals of $\A$ that contain local units and such that the partial skew group ring $\A\star_α \G$ is associative. We show that $\A\star_α \G$ is simple if and only if $\A$ is $\G$-simple and the center of the corner $eδ_0 (\A\star_α \G) e δ_0$ is a field for all $e\in \E$. We apply the result to characterize simplicity of partial skew group rings in two cases, namely for partial skew group rings arising from partial actions by clopen subsets of a compact set and par…
We study partial actions of exact discrete groups on C*-algebras. We show that the partial crossed product of a commutative C*-algebra by an exact discrete group is nuclear whenever the full and reduced partial crossed products coincide. This generalises a result by Matsumura in the context of global actions. In general, we prove that a partial action of an exact discrete group on a C*-algebra $A$ has Exel's approximation property if and only if the full and reduced partial crossed products associated to the diagonal partial action on $A\otimes_{\max} A^\mathrm{op}$ coincide. We apply our resu…
For a free partial action of a group in a set we realize the associated partial skew group ring as an algebra of functions with finite support over an equivalence relation and we use this result to characterize the ideals in the partial skew group ring. This generalizes, to the purely algebraic setting, the known characterization of partial C*-crossed products as groupoid C*-algebras. For completeness we include a new proof of the C* result for free partial actions.
