We find a sufficient condition under which a central limit theorem for a stationary linear process is quenched. We find a stationary linear process szatisfying the Maxwell-Woodroofe condition for which the variances of partial sums are o(n), there is a CLT with a convergence towards N(0,1) when dividing by standard deviation of the partial sums, and the CLT is not quenched. The weak invariance principle does not hold.
In this note, we prove a conditionally centered version of the quenched weak invariance principle under the Hannan condition, for stationary processes. In the course, we obtain a (new) construction of the fact that any stationary process may be seen as a functional of a Markov chain.
In this paper we give sufficient conditions for the almost sure central limit theorem started at a point, known under the name of quenched central limit theorem. This is achieved by using a new idea of conditioning with respect to both the past and the future of the Markov chain. As applications we provide a new sufficient projective conditions for the quenched CLT.
Motivated by random evolutions which do not start from equilibrium, in a recent work, Peligrad and Volný (2018) showed that the quenched CLT (central limit theorem) holds for ortho-martingale random fields. In this paper, we study the quenched CLT for a class of random fields larger than the ortho-martingales. To get the results, we impose sufficient conditions in terms of projective criteria under which the partial sums of a stationary random field admit an ortho-martingale approximation. More precisely, the sufficient conditions are of the Hannan's projective type. As applications, we establ…
In this paper, we study the quenched central limit theorem for the discrete Fourier transform. We show that the Fourier transform of a stationary ergodic process, suitable centered and normalized, satisfies the quenched CLT conditioned by the past sigma algebra. For functions of Markov chains with stationary transitions, this means that the CLT holds with respect to the law of the chain started at a point for almost all starting points. It is necessary to emphasize that no assumption of irreducibility with respect to a measure or other regularity conditions are imposed for this result. We also…
It is shown that the existence of an L^1 co boundary does not imply the quenched version of the central limit theorem. In another result it is shown that Hannan's condition does imply quenched convergence for an appropriately centered version of the sum.
In this paper we survey the almost sure central limit theorem and its functional form (quenched) for stationary and ergodic processes. For additive functionals of a stationary and ergodic Markov chain these theorems are known under the terminology of central limit theorem and its functional form, started at a point. All these results have in common that they are obtained via a martingale approximation in the almost sure sense. We point out several applications of these results to classes of mixing sequences, shift processes, reversible Markov chains, Metropolis Hastings algorithms.
In this dissertation, we show that the Central Limit Theorem and the Invariance Principle for Discrete Fourier Transforms discovered by Peligrad and Wu can be extended to the quenched setting. We show that the random normalization introduced to extend these results is necessary and we discuss its meaning. We also show the validity of the quenched Invariance Principle for fixed frequencies under some conditions of weak dependence. In particular, we show that this result holds in the martingale case. The discussion needed for the proofs allows us to show some general facts apparently not noticed…
In this note, we prove a quenched functional central limit theorem for a biased random walk on a supercritical Galton-Watson tree with leaves. This extends a result of Peres and Zeitouni (2008) where the case without leaves is considered. A conjecture of Ben Arous and Fribergh (2016) suggests an upper bound on the bias which we observe to be sharp.
We prove a quenched local central limit theorem for continuous-time random walks in $\mathbb Z^d, d\ge 2$, in a uniformly-elliptic time-dependent balanced random environment which is ergodic under space-time shifts. We also obtain Gaussian upper and lower bounds for quenched and (positive and negative) moment estimates of the transition probabilities and asymptotics of the discrete Green function.
We consider the rates of convergence of the quenched central limit theorem for hitting times of one-dimensional random walks in a random environment. Previous results had identified polynomial upper bounds for the rates of decay which are sometimes slower than $n^{-1/2}$ (the optimal rate in the classical Berry-Esseen estimates). Here we prove that the previous upper bounds are in fact the best possible polynomial rates for the quenched CLT.
Unlike classical simple random walks, one-dimensional random walks in random environments (RWRE) are known to have a wide array of potential limiting distributions. Under certain assumptions, however, it is known that CLT-like limiting distributions hold for the walk under both the quenched and averaged measures. We give upper bounds on the rates of convergence for the quenched central limit theorems for both the hitting time and position of the RWRE with polynomial rates of convergence that depend on the distribution on environments.
We prove the quenched version of the central limit theorem for the displacement of a random walk in doubly stochastic random environment, under the $H_{-1}$-condition, with slightly stronger, $L^{2+\varepsilon}$ (rather than $L^2$) integrability condition on the stream tensor. On the way we extend Nash's moment bound to the non-reversible, divergence-free drift case.
We prove a quenched central limit theorem for random walks in i.i.d. weakly elliptic random environments in the ballistic regime. Such theorems have been proved recently by Rassoul-Agha and Seppäläinen in [10] and Berger and Zeitouni in [2] under the assumption of large finite moments for the regeneration time. In this paper, with the extra $(T)_γ$ condition of Sznitman we reduce the moment condition to ${\Bbb E}(τ^2(\ln τ)^{1+m})<+\infty$ for $m>1+1/γ$, which allows the inclusion of new non-uniformly elliptic examples such as Dirichlet random environments.
We establish convergence to the Kingman coalescent for the genealogy of a geographically - or otherwise - structured version of the Wright-Fisher population model with fast migration. The new feature is that migration probabilities may change in a random fashion. This brings a novel formula for the coalescent effective population size (EPS). We call it a quenched EPS to emphasize the key feature of our model - random environment. The quenched EPS is compared with an annealed (mean-field) EPS which describes the case of constant migration probabilities obtained by averaging the random migration…
In this paper, we study the asymptotic behavior of the normalized cadlag functions generated by the discrete Fourier transforms of a stationary centered square-integrable process, started at a point. We prove that the quenched invariance principle holds for averaged frequencies under no assumption other than ergodicity, and that this result holds also for almost every fixed frequency under a certain generalization of the Hannan condition and a certain rotated form of the Maxwell and Woodroofe condition which, under a condition of weak dependence that we specify, is guaranteed for a.e. frequenc…
Random walks in random scenery are processes defined by $$Z_n:=\sum_{k=1}^nω_{S_k}$$ where $S:=(S_k,k\ge 0)$ is a random walk evolving in $\mathbb{Z}^d$ and $ω:=(ω_x, x\in{\mathbb Z}^d)$ is a sequence of i.i.d. real random variables. Under suitable assumptions on the random walk $S$ and the random scenery $ω$, almost surely with respect to $ω$, the correctly renormalized sequence $(Z_n)_{n\geq 1}$ is proved to converge in distribution to a centered Gaussian law with explicit variance.
A recent result by Barrera and Peligrad shows that the quenched Central Limit Theorem holds for the discrete Fourier transforms (DFT) of a stationary process in $L^2$ if a "random" centering is used. In this note we show that this is a necessary condition by providing an example of a process satisfying the hypothesis of such theorem for which the DFT, without random centering, do not satisfy a quenched limit theorem. The DFT of this process, by previous results by Peligrad and Wu, satisfy the corresponding CLT in the annealed sense.
We continue with the study of the mollified stochastic heat equation in $d\geq 3$ given by $d u_{ε,t}=\frac 12Δu_{ε,t}+ βε^{(d-2)/2} \,u_{ε,t} \,d B_{ε,t}$ with spatially smoothened cylindrical Wiener process $B$, whose (renormalized) Feynman-Kac solution describes the partition function of the continuous directed polymer. In an earlier work (\cite{MSZ16}), a phase transition was obtained, depending on the value of $β>0$ in the limiting object of the smoothened solution $u_ε$ as the smoothing parameter $ε\to 0$ This partition function naturally defines a quenched polymer path measure and we pr…
Random walks in random sceneries (RWRS) are simple examples of stochastic processes in disordered media. They were introduced at the end of the 70's by Kesten-Spitzer and Borodin, motivated by the construction of new self-similar processes with stationary increments. Two sources of randomness enter in their definition: a random field $ξ= (ξ_x)_{x \in \Z^d}$ of i.i.d.\ random variables, which is called the \emph{random scenery}, and a random walk $S = (S_n)_{n \in \N}$ evolving in $\Z^d$, independent from the scenery. The RWRS $Z = (Z_n)_{n \in \N}$ is then defined as the accumulated scenery al…
A quenched central limit theorem is derived for the super-Brownian motion with super-Brownian immigration, in dimension $d\geq 4$. At the critical dimension $d=4$, the quenched and annealed fluctuations are of the same order but are not equal.
In this paper, we obtain sufficient conditions in terms of projective criteria under which the partial sums of a stationary process with values in ${\mathcal{H}}$ (a real and separable Hilbert space) admits an approximation, in ${\mathbb{L}}^p({\mathcal{H}})$, $p>1$, by a martingale with stationary differences, and we then estimate the error of approximation in ${\mathbb{L}}^p({\mathcal{H}})$. The results are exploited to further investigate the behavior of the partial sums. In particular we obtain new projective conditions concerning the Marcinkiewicz-Zygmund theorem, the moderate deviations …
We prove a quenched functional central limit theorem (quenched FCLT) for the sums of a random field (r.f.) along a 2d-random walk in different situations: when the r.f. is iid with a second order moment (random sceneries), or when it is generated by the action of commuting automorphisms of a torus. We consider also a quenched version of the FCLT when the random walk is replaced by a Lorentz process in the random scenery.
We prove a quenched central limit theorem for balanced random walks in time dependent ergodic random environments which is not necessarily nearest-neigbhor. We assume that the environment satisfies appropriate ergodicity and ellipticity conditions. The proof is based on the use of a maximum principle for parabolic difference operators.
We obtain pointwise ergodic theorems with rate under conditions expressed in terms of the convergence of series involving $\|\sum_{k=1} ^nf\circ θ^k\|_2$, improving previous results. Then, using known results on martingale approximation, we obtain some LIL for stationary ergodic processes and quenched central limit theorems for functional of Markov chains. The proofs are based on the use of the spectral theorem and, on a recent work of Zhao-Woodroofe extending a method of Derriennic-Lin.
We study random compositions of transformations having certain uniform fiberwise properties and prove bounds which in combination with other results yield a quenched central limit theorem equipped with a convergence rate, also in the multivariate case, assuming fiberwise centering. For the most part we work with non-stationary randomness and non-invariant, non-product measures. Independently, we believe our work sheds light on the mechanisms that make quenched central limit theorems work, by dissecting the problem into three separate parts.
In this paper we study the almost sure conditional central limit theorem in its functional form for a class of random variables satisfying a projective criterion. Applications to strongly mixing processes and non irreducible Markov chains are given. The proofs are based on the normal approximation of double indexed martingale-like sequences, a theory which has interest in itself.
We prove a shape theorem and derive a variational formula for the limiting quenched Lyapunov exponent and the Green's function of random walk in a random potential on a square lattice of arbitrary dimension and with an arbitrary finite set of steps. The potential is a function of a stationary environment and the step of the walk. This potential is subject to a moment assumption whose strictness is tied to the mixing of the environment. Our setting includes directed and undirected polymers, random walk in static and dynamic random environment, and, when the temperature is taken to zero, our res…
We will investigate a random mass splitting model and the closely related random walk in a random environment (RWRE). The heat kernel for the RWRE at time t is the mass splitting distribution at t. We prove a quenched invariance principle for the RWRE which gives us a quenched central limit theorem for the mass splitting model. Our RWRE has an environment which is changing with time. We follow the outline for proving a quenched invariant process for a random walk in a space-time random environment laid out by Rassoul-Agha and Seppäläinen which in turn was based on the work of Kipnis and Varadh…
In this paper we develop non-stationary martingale techniques for dependent data. We shall stress the non-stationary version of the projective Maxwell-Woodroofe condition, which will be essential for obtaining maximal inequalities and functional central limit theorem for the following examples: nonstationary \r{ho}-mixing sequences, functions of linear processes with non-stationary innovations, quenched version of the functional central limit theorem for a stationary sequence, evolutions in random media such as a process sampled by a shifted Markov chain.
For $M \geq 2$ we construct a strictly stationary, $M$-tuplewise independent sequence that is mixing (in the ergodic-theoretic sense) and yet still fails to satisfy the Central Limit Theorem.
We consider the random conductance model in a stationary and ergodic environment. Under suitable moment conditions on the conductances and their inverse, we prove a quenched invariance principle for the random walk among the random conductances. The moment conditions improve earlier results of Andres, Deuschel and Slowik [Ann.\ Probab.] and are the minimal requirement to ensure that the corrector is sublinear everywhere. The key ingredient is an essentially optimal deterministic local boundedness result for finite difference equations in divergence form.
We consider an i.i.d. random environment with a strong form of transience on the two dimensional integer lattice. Namely, the walk always moves forward in the y-direction. We prove a functional CLT for the quenched expected position of the random walk indexed by its level crossing times. We begin with a variation of the Martingale Central Limit Theorem. The main part of the paper checks the conditions of the theorem for our problem.
The main goal of the paper is to prove central limit theorems for the magnetization rescaled by $\sqrt{N}$ for the Ising model on random graphs with $N$ vertices. Both random quenched and averaged quenched measures are considered. We work in the uniqueness regime $β>β_c$ or $β>0$ and $B\neq0$, where $β$ is the inverse temperature, $β_c$ is the critical inverse temperature and $B$ is the external magnetic field. In the random quenched setting our results apply to general tree-like random graphs (as introduced by Dembo, Montanari and further studied by Dommers and the first and third author) and…
In this paper, we formulate and prove new properties of conditional quantiles given one of the particular sigma-fields. Next, we use them to investigate almost sure asymptotic behavior of central order statistics which arise from strictly stationary processes. Specifically we provide a new version of a strong ergodic theorem for central order statistics.
The Lyapunov spectra of random U(1) extensions of expanding maps on the torus were investigated in our previous work [NW2015]. Using the result, we extend the recent spectral approach for quenched limit theorems for expanding maps [DFGV2018] and hyperbolic maps [DFGV2019] to our partially hyperbolic dynamics. Quenched central limit theorems, large deviations principles and local central limit theorems for random U(1) extensions of expanding maps on the torus are proved via corresponding theorems for abstract random dynamical systems.
For an arbitrary integer N that is at least 2, this paper gives a construction of a strictly stationary, N-tuplewise independent sequence of (non-degenerate) bounded random variables such that the Central Limit Theorem fails to hold. The sequence is in part an adaptation of a non-stationary example with similar properties constructed by one of the authors (ARP) in a paper published in 1998.
We present a general functional central limit theorem started at a point also known under the name of quenched. As a consequence, we point out several new classes of stationary processes, defined via projection conditions, which satisfy this type of asymptotic result. One of the theorems shows that if a Markov chain is stationary ergodic and reversible, this result holds for bounded additive functionals of the chain which have a martingale coboundary in L_1 representation. Our results are also well adapted for strongly mixing sequences providing for this case an alternative, shorter approach t…
For a sequence of i.i.d. random variables $\{ξ_x : x\in \bb Z\}$ bounded above and below by strictly positive finite constants, consider the nearest-neighbor one-dimensional simple exclusion process in which a particle at $x$ (resp. $x+1$) jumps to $x+1$ (resp. $x$) at rate $ξ_x$. We examine a quenched nonequilibrium central limit theorem for the position of a tagged particle in the exclusion process with bond disorder $\{ξ_x : x\in \bb Z\}$. We prove that the position of the tagged particle converges under diffusive scaling to a Gaussian process if the other particles are initially distribute…
We prove quenched versions of a central limit theorem, a large deviations principle as well as a local central limit theorem for expanding on average cocycles. This is achieved by building an appropriate modification of the spectral method for non-autonomous dynamics developed by Dragičević et al., to deal with the case of random dynamics that exhibits nonuniform decay of correlations, which are ubiquitous in the context of the multiplicative ergodic theory. Our results provide an affirmative answer to a question posed by Buzzi.
In this paper we extend a central limit theorem of Peligrad for uniformly strong mixing random fields satisfying the Lindeberg condition in the absence of stationarity property. More precisely, we study the asymptotic normality of the partial sums of uniformly $α$-mixing non-stationary random fields satisfying the Lindeberg condition, in the presence of an extra dependence assumption involving maximal correlations.
In this paper, we derive asymptotic results for L^1-Wasserstein distance between the distribution function and the corresponding empirical distribution function of a stationary sequence. Next, we give some applications to dynamical systems and causal linear processes. To prove our main result, we give a Central Limit Theorem for ergodic stationary sequences of random variables with values in L^1. The conditions obtained are expressed in terms of projective-type conditions. The main tools are martingale approximations.
We prove a functional central limit theorem for integrals $\int_W f(X(t))\, dt$, where $(X(t))_{t\in\mathbb{R}^d}$ is a stationary mixing random field and the stochastic process is indexed by the function $f$, as the integration domain $W$ grows in Van Hove-sense. We discuss properties of the covariance function of the asymptotic Gaussian process.
The first aim of this paper is to wonder to what extent we can generalize the central limit theorem of Gordin [5] under the so-called L 1-projective criteria to ergodic stationary random fields when completely commuting filtrations are considered. Surprisingly it appears that this result cannot be extended to its full generality and that an additional condition is needed.
In 1983, N. Herrndorf proved that for a $ϕ$-mixing sequence satisfying the central limit theorem and $\liminf_{n\to\infty}\frac{σ^2_n}n>0$, the weak invariance principle takes place. The question whether for strictly stationary sequences with finite second moments and a weaker type ($α$, $β$, $ρ$) of mixing the central limit theorem implies the weak invariance principle remained open. We construct a strictly stationary $β$-mixing sequence with finite moments of any order and linear variance for which the central limit theorem takes place but not the weak invariance principle.
In this paper we study the central limit theorem and its functional form for random fields which are not started from their equilibrium, but rather under the measure conditioned by the past sigma field. The initial class considered is that of orthomartingales and then the result is extended to a more general class of random fields by approximating them, in some sense, with an orthomartingale. We construct an example which shows that there are orthomartingales which satisfy the CLT but not its quenched form. This example also clarifies the optimality of the moment conditions used for the validi…
We establish a quenched local central limit theorem for the dynamic random conductance model on $\mathbb{Z}^d$ only assuming ergodicity with respect to space-time shifts and a moment condition. As a key analytic ingredient we show Hölder continuity estimates for solutions to the heat equation for discrete finite difference operators in divergence form with time-dependent degenerate weights. The proof is based on De Giorgi's iteration technique. In addition, we also derive a quenched local central limit theorem for the static random conductance model on a class of random graphs with degenerate …
We prove a functional central limit theorem for partial sums of symmetric stationary long range dependent heavy tailed infinitely divisible processes with a certain type of negative dependence. Previously only positive dependence could be treated. The negative dependence involves cancellations of the Gaussian second order. This leads to new types of limiting processes involving stable random measures, due to heavy tails, Mittag-Leffler processes, due to long memory, and Brownian motions, due to the Gaussian second order cancellations.
We consider asymptotic behavior of Fourier transforms of stationary ergodic sequences with finite second moments. We establish a central limit theorem (CLT) for almost all frequencies and also an annealed CLT. The theorems hold for all regular sequences. Our results shed new light on the foundation of spectral analysis and on the asymptotic distribution of periodogram, and it provides a nice blend of harmonic analysis, theory of stationary processes and theory of martingales.
A strictly stationary sequence of random variables is constructed with the following properties: (i) the random variables take the values -1 and +1 with probability 1/2 each, (ii) every five of the random variables are independent, (iii) the sequence is "causal" in a certain sense, (iv) the sequence has a trivial double tail sigma-field, and (v) regardless of the normalization used, the partial sums do not converge to a (nondegenerate) normal law. The example has some features in common with a recent construction (for an arbitrary fixed positive integer N), by Alexander Pruss and the author, o…
We consider a nearest-neighbor, one-dimensional random walk $\{X_n\}_{n\geq 0}$ in a random i.i.d. environment, in the regime where the walk is transient with speed v_P > 0 and there exists an $s\in(1,2)$ such that the annealed law of $n^{-1/s} (X_n - n v_P)$ converges to a stable law of parameter s. Under the quenched law (i.e., conditioned on the environment), we show that no limit laws are possible. In particular we show that there exist sequences {t_k} and {t_k'} depending on the environment only, such that a quenched central limit theorem holds along the subsequence t_k, but the quenched …
General Central limit theorem deals with weak limits (in type) of sums of row-elements of array random variables. In some situations as in the invariance principle problem, the sums may include only parts of the row-elements. For strictly stationary arrays (stationary for each row), there is no change to the asymptotic results. But for non-stationary data, especially for dependent data, asymptotic laws of partial sums moving in rows may require extra-conditions to exist. This paper deals with central limit theorems with Gaussian limits for non-stationary data. Our main focus is on dependent da…
In this paper we study the almost sure central limit theorem started from a point for additive functionals of a stationary and ergodic Markov chain via a martingale approximation in the almost sure sense. As a consequence we derive the quenched CLT for additive functionals or reversible Markov chains.
