In this paper we survey the almost sure central limit theorem and its functional form (quenched) for stationary and ergodic processes. For additive functionals of a stationary and ergodic Markov chain these theorems are known under the terminology of central limit theorem and its functional form, started at a point. All these results have in common that they are obtained via a martingale approximation in the almost sure sense. We point out several applications of these results to classes of mixing sequences, shift processes, reversible Markov chains, Metropolis Hastings algorithms.
Motivated by random evolutions which do not start from equilibrium, in a recent work, Peligrad and Volný (2018) showed that the quenched CLT (central limit theorem) holds for ortho-martingale random fields. In this paper, we study the quenched CLT for a class of random fields larger than the ortho-martingales. To get the results, we impose sufficient conditions in terms of projective criteria under which the partial sums of a stationary random field admit an ortho-martingale approximation. More precisely, the sufficient conditions are of the Hannan's projective type. As applications, we establ…
The classical Donsker weak invariance principle is extended to a Besov spaces framework. Polygonal line processes build from partial sums of stationary martingale differences as well independent and identically distributed random variables are considered. The results obtained are shown to be optimal.
In this paper, we obtain sufficient conditions in terms of projective criteria under which the partial sums of a stationary process with values in ${\mathcal{H}}$ (a real and separable Hilbert space) admits an approximation, in ${\mathbb{L}}^p({\mathcal{H}})$, $p>1$, by a martingale with stationary differences, and we then estimate the error of approximation in ${\mathbb{L}}^p({\mathcal{H}})$. The results are exploited to further investigate the behavior of the partial sums. In particular we obtain new projective conditions concerning the Marcinkiewicz-Zygmund theorem, the moderate deviations …
Using changes of probability measure developed by \mbox{Grama} and Haeusler (Stochastic Process.\ Appl., 2000), we obtain two generalizations of the deviation inequalities of Lanzinger and Stadtmüller (Stochastic Process.\ Appl., 2000) and Fuk and Nagaev (Theory Probab. Appl., 1971) to the case of martingales. Our inequalities recover the best possible decaying rate of independent case. Applications to linear regressions and weak invariance principles for martingales are provided.
In this paper, we obtain almost sure invariance principles with rate of order $n^{1/p}\log^βn$, $2< p\le 4$, for sums associated to a sequence of reverse martingale differences. Then, we apply those results to obtain similar conclusions in the context of some non-invertible dynamical systems. For instance we treat several classes of uniformly expanding maps of the interval (for possibly unbounded functions). A general result for $ϕ$-dependent sequences is obtained in the course.
In this paper we estimate the rest of the approximation of a stationary process by a martingale in terms of the projections of partial sums. Then, based on this estimate, we obtain almost sure approximation of partial sums by a martingale with stationary differences. The results are exploited to further investigate the central limit theorem and its invariance principle started at a point, as well as the law of the iterated logarithm via almost sure approximation with a Brownian motion, improving the results available in the literature. The conditions are well suited for a variety of examples; …
We show that there exists an ergodic conductance environment such that the weak (annealed) invariance principle holds for the corresponding continuous time random walk but the quenched invariance principle does not hold.
In this paper, we give explicit rates in the central limit theorem and in the almost sure invariance principle for general R d-valued cocycles that appear in the study of the left random walk on linear groups. Our method of proof lies on a suitable martingale approximation and on a careful estimation of some coupling coefficients linked with the underlying Markov structure. Concerning the martingale part, the available results in the literature are not accurate enough to give almost optimal rates whether in the central limit theorem for the Wasserstein distance, or in the strong approximation.…
In this note, we prove a conditionally centered version of the quenched weak invariance principle under the Hannan condition, for stationary processes. In the course, we obtain a (new) construction of the fact that any stationary process may be seen as a functional of a Markov chain.
We show that there exists an ergodic conductance environment such that the weak (annealed) invariance principle holds for the corresponding continuous time random walk but the quenched invariance principle does not hold. In the present paper we give a proof of the full scaling limit for the weak invariance principle, improving the result in an earlier paper where we obtained a subsequential limit.
We establish via a probabilistic approach the quenched invariance principle for a class of long range random walks in independent (but not necessarily identically distributed) balanced random environments, with the transition probability from $x$ to $y$ on average being comparable to $|x-y|^{-(d+α)}$ with $α\in (0,2]$. We use the martingale property to estimate exit time from balls and establish tightness of the scaled processes, and apply the uniqueness of the martingale problem to identify the limiting process. When $α\in (0,1)$, our approach works even for non-balanced cases. When $α=2$, un…
We consider simple random walks on Delaunay triangulations generated by point processes in $\mathbb{R}^d$. Under suitable assumptions on the point processes, we show that the random walk satisfies an almost sure (or quenched) invariance principle. This invariance principle holds for point processes which have clustering or repulsiveness properties including Poisson point processes, Mat{é}rn cluster and Mat{é}rn hardcore processes. The method relies on the decomposition of the process into a martingale part and a corrector which is proved to be negligible at the diffusive scale.
We prove a quenched central limit theorem for balanced random walks in time dependent ergodic random environments which is not necessarily nearest-neigbhor. We assume that the environment satisfies appropriate ergodicity and ellipticity conditions. The proof is based on the use of a maximum principle for parabolic difference operators.
We will investigate a random mass splitting model and the closely related random walk in a random environment (RWRE). The heat kernel for the RWRE at time t is the mass splitting distribution at t. We prove a quenched invariance principle for the RWRE which gives us a quenched central limit theorem for the mass splitting model. Our RWRE has an environment which is changing with time. We follow the outline for proving a quenched invariant process for a random walk in a space-time random environment laid out by Rassoul-Agha and Seppäläinen which in turn was based on the work of Kipnis and Varadh…
Consider the invariance principle for a random walk with random environment (denoted by $μ$) in time on $\bfR$ in a weak quenched sense. We show that a sequence of the random probability measures on $\bfR$ generated by a bounded Lipschitz functional $f$ and $μ$ will converge in distribution to another random probability measures, which is related to $f$ and two independent Brownian motions. The upper bound of the convergence rate has been obtained. We also explain that in general, this convergence can not be strengthened to the almost surely sense.
In this paper we study the almost sure conditional central limit theorem in its functional form for a class of random variables satisfying a projective criterion. Applications to strongly mixing processes and non irreducible Markov chains are given. The proofs are based on the normal approximation of double indexed martingale-like sequences, a theory which has interest in itself.
We consider the simple random walk on the graph corresponding to a Penrose tiling. We prove that the path distribution of the walk converges weakly to that of a non-degenerate Brownian motion for almost every Penrose tiling with respect to the appropriate invariant measure on the set of tilings. Our tool for this is the corrector method.
We investigate the invariance principle in H{ö}lder spaces for strictly stationary martingale difference sequences. In particular, we show that the sufficient condition on the tail in the i.i.d. case does not extend to stationary ergodic martingale differences. We provide a sufficient condition on the conditional variance which guarantee the invariance principle in H{ö}lder spaces. We then deduce a condition in the spirit of Hannan one.
We consider the simple random walk on random graphs generated by discrete point processes. This random graph has a random subset of a cubic lattice as the vertices and lines between any consecutive vertices on lines parallel to each coordinate axis as the edges. Under the assumption that discrete point processes are finitely dependent and stationary, we prove that the quenched invariance principle holds, that is, for almost every configuration of a point process, the path distribution of the walk converges weakly to that of a Brownian motion.
We study a continuous-time random walk, $X$, on $\mathbb{Z}^d$ in an environment of dynamic random conductances taking values in $(0, \infty)$. We assume that the law of the conductances is ergodic with respect to space-time shifts. We prove a quenched invariance principle for the Markov process $X$ under some moment conditions on the environment. The key result on the sublinearity of the corrector is obtained by Moser's iteration scheme.
In this paper we develop non-stationary martingale techniques for dependent data. We shall stress the non-stationary version of the projective Maxwell-Woodroofe condition, which will be essential for obtaining maximal inequalities and functional central limit theorem for the following examples: nonstationary \r{ho}-mixing sequences, functions of linear processes with non-stationary innovations, quenched version of the functional central limit theorem for a stationary sequence, evolutions in random media such as a process sampled by a shifted Markov chain.
We consider random walks in a balanced random environment in $\mathbb{Z}^d$, $d\geq 2$. We first prove an invariance principle (for $d\ge2$) and the transience of the random walks when $d\ge 3$ (recurrence when $d=2$) in an ergodic environment which is not uniformly elliptic but satisfies certain moment condition. Then, using percolation arguments, we show that under mere ellipticity, the above results hold for random walks in i.i.d. balanced environments.
Via a Dirichlet form extension theorem and making full use of two-sided heat kernel estimates, we establish quenched invariance principles for random walks in random environments with a boundary. In particular, we prove that the random walk on a supercritical percolation cluster or among random conductances bounded uniformly from below in a half-space, quarter-space, etc., converges when rescaled diffusively to a reflecting Brownian motion, which has been one of the important open problems in this area. We establish a similar result for the random conductance model in a box, which allows us to…
We consider a random walk on Z^d in an i.i.d. balanced random environment, that is a random walk for which the probability to jump from x to nearest neighbor x+e is the same as to nearest neighbor x-e. Assuming that the environment is genuinely d-dimensional and balanced we show a quenched invariance principle: for P almost every environment, the diffusive rescaled random walk converges to a Brownian motion with deterministic non-degenerate diffusion matrix. Within the i.i.d. setting, our result extend both Lawler's uniformly elliptic result and Guo and Zeitouni's elliptic result to the genera…
In this paper we study the central limit theorem and its functional form for random fields which are not started from their equilibrium, but rather under the measure conditioned by the past sigma field. The initial class considered is that of orthomartingales and then the result is extended to a more general class of random fields by approximating them, in some sense, with an orthomartingale. We construct an example which shows that there are orthomartingales which satisfy the CLT but not its quenched form. This example also clarifies the optimality of the moment conditions used for the validi…
We consider a random walk on a random graph $(V,E)$, where $V$ is the set of open sites under i.i.d. Bernoulli site percolation on the multi-dimensional integer set $\mathbf{Z}^d$, and the transition probabilities of the walk are generated by i.i.d. random conductances (positive numbers) assigned to the edges in $E$. This random walk in random environments has long range jumps and is reversible. We prove the quenched invariance principle for this walk when the random conductances are unbounded from above but uniformly bounded from zero by taking the corrector approach. To this end, we prove a …
We consider branching random walk in spatial random branching environment (BRWRE) in dimension one, as well as related differential equations: the Fisher-KPP equation with random branching and its linearized version, the parabolic Anderson model (PAM). When the random environment is bounded, we show that after recentering and scaling, the position of the maximal particle of the BRWRE, the front of the solution of the PAM, as well as the front of the solution of the randomized Fisher-KPP equation fulfill quenched invariance principles. In addition, we prove that at time t the distance between t…
We prove the compact law of the iterated logarithm for stationary and ergodic differences of (reverse or not) martingales taking values in a separable $2$-smooth Banach space (for instance a Hilbert space). Then, in the martingale case, the almost sure invariance principle is derived from a result of Berger. From those results, we deduce the almost sure invariance principle for stationary processes under the Hannan condition and the compact law of the iterated logarithm for stationary processes arising from non-invertible dynamical systems. Those results for stationary processes are new, even …
We prove a central limit theorem for stationary multiple (random) fields of martingale differences $f\circ T_{\underline{i}}$, $\underline{i}\in \Bbb Z^d$, where $T_{\underline{i}}$ is a $\Bbb Z^d$ action. In most cases the multiple (random) fields of martingale differences is given by a completely commuting filtration. A central limit theorem proving convergence to a normal law has been known for Bernoulli random fields and in [V15] this result was extended to random fields where one of generating transformations is ergodic. In the present paper it is proved that a convergence takes place alw…
The Fleming-Viot (FV) process is a measure-valued diffusion that models the evolution of type frequencies in a countable population which evolves under resampling (genetic drift), mutation, and selection. In the classic FV model the fitness (strength) of types is given by a measurable function. In this paper, we introduce and study the Fleming-Viot process in random environment (FVRE), when by random environment we mean the fitness of types is a stochastic process with càdlàg paths. We identify FVRE as the unique solution to a so called quenched martingale problem and derive some of its proper…
We consider the random conductance model in a stationary and ergodic environment. Under suitable moment conditions on the conductances and their inverse, we prove a quenched invariance principle for the random walk among the random conductances. The moment conditions improve earlier results of Andres, Deuschel and Slowik [Ann.\ Probab.] and are the minimal requirement to ensure that the corrector is sublinear everywhere. The key ingredient is an essentially optimal deterministic local boundedness result for finite difference equations in divergence form.
We prove a martingale-coboundary representation for random fields with a completely commuting filtration. For random variables in L2 we present a necessary and sufficient condition which is a generalization of Heyde's condition for one dimensional processes from 1975. For Lp spaces with 2 \leq p < \infty we give a necessary and sufficient condition which extends Volny's result from 1993 to random fields and improves condition of El Machkouri and Giraudo from 2016 (arXiv:1410.3062). In application, new weak invariance principle and estimates of large deviations are found.
We consider a random walk on $\R^d$ in a polynomially mixing random environment that is refreshed at each time step. We use a martingale approach to give a necessary and sufficient condition for the almost-sure functional central limit theorem to hold.
We prove quenched invariance principle for simple random walk on the unique infinite percolation cluster for a general class of percolation models on Z^d, d>=2, with long-range correlations introduced in arXiv:1212.2885, solving one of the open problems from there. This gives new results for random interlacements in dimension d>=3 at every level, as well as for the vacant set of random interlacements and the level sets of the Gaussian free field in the regime of the so-called local uniqueness (which is believed to coincide with the whole supercritical regime). An essential ingredient of our pr…
We explore the survival function for percolation on Galton-Watson trees. Letting $g(T,p)$ represent the probability a tree $T$ survives Bernoulli percolation with parameter $p$, we establish several results about the behavior of the random function $g(\mathbf{T} , \cdot)$, where $\mathbf{T}$ is drawn from the Galton-Watson distribution. These include almost sure smoothness in the supercritical region; an expression for the $k\text{th}$-order Taylor expansion of $g(\mathbf{T} , \cdot)$ at criticality in terms of limits of martingales defined from $\mathbf{T}$ (this requires a moment condition d…
We consider a stationary and ergodic random field $\{ω(e) : e \in E_d\}$ that is parameterized by the edge set of the Euclidean lattice $\mathbb{Z}^d$, $d \geq 2$. The random variable $ω(e)$, taking values in $[0, \infty)$ and satisfying certain moment bounds, is thought of as the conductance of the edge $e$. Assuming that the set of edges with positive conductances give rise to a unique infinite cluster $\mathcal{C}_{\infty}(ω)$, we prove a quenched invariance principle for the continuous-time random walk among random conductances under relatively mild conditions on the structure of the infin…
In this paper, we study the asymptotic behavior of the normalized cadlag functions generated by the discrete Fourier transforms of a stationary centered square-integrable process, started at a point. We prove that the quenched invariance principle holds for averaged frequencies under no assumption other than ergodicity, and that this result holds also for almost every fixed frequency under a certain generalization of the Hannan condition and a certain rotated form of the Maxwell and Woodroofe condition which, under a condition of weak dependence that we specify, is guaranteed for a.e. frequenc…
We find a sufficient condition under which a central limit theorem for a stationary linear process is quenched. We find a stationary linear process szatisfying the Maxwell-Woodroofe condition for which the variances of partial sums are o(n), there is a CLT with a convergence towards N(0,1) when dividing by standard deviation of the partial sums, and the CLT is not quenched. The weak invariance principle does not hold.
We study the asymptotic behaviour of random walks in i.i.d. non-elliptic random environments on $\mathbb{Z}^d$. Standard conditions (and proofs) for ballisticity and the central limit theorem require ellipticity. We use oriented percolation and martingale arguments to give non-trivial local conditions for ballisticity and an annealed invariance principle in the non-elliptic setting.
The long-term behavior of a supercritical branching random walk can be described and analyzed with the help of Biggins' martingales, parametrized by real or complex numbers. The study of these martingales with complex parameters is a rather recent topic. Assuming that certain sufficient conditions for the convergence of the martingales to non-degenerate limits hold, we investigate the fluctuations of the martingales around their limits. We discover three different regimes. First, we show that for parameters with small absolute values, the fluctuations are Gaussian and the limit laws are scale …
We prove an invariance principle for the two-dimensional lattice parabolic Anderson model with small potential. As applications we deduce a Donsker type convergence result for a discrete random polymer measure, as well as a universality result for the spectrum of discrete random Schrödinger operators on large boxes with small potentials. Our proof is based on paracontrolled distributions and some basic results for multiple stochastic integrals of discrete martingales.
In this paper, we consider random walk in random environment on $\mathbb{Z}^{d}\,(d\geq1)$ and prove the Strassen's strong invariance principle for this model, via martingale argument and the theory of fractional coboundaries of Derriennic and Lin \cite{DL}, under some conditions which require the variance of the quenched mean has a subdiffusive bound. The results partially fill the gaps between law of large numbers and central limit theorems.
Given a random walk $(S_n)$ with typical step distributed according to some fixed law and a fixed parameter $p \in (0,1)$, the associated positively step-reinforced random walk is a discrete-time process which performs at each step, with probability $1-p$, the same step as $(S_n)$ while with probability $p$, it repeats one of the steps it performed previously chosen uniformly at random. The negatively step-reinforced random walk follows the same dynamics but when a step is repeated its sign is also changed. In this work, we shall prove functional limit theorems for the triplet of a random walk…
