We consider a ballistic random walk in an i.i.d. random environment that does not allow retreating in a certain fixed direction. We prove an invariance principle (functional central limit theorem) under almost every fixed environment. The assumptions are nonnestling, at least two spatial dimensions, and a $2+ε$ moment for the step of the walk uniformly in the environment. The main point behind the invariance principle is that the quenched mean of the walk behaves subdiffusively.
We consider a ballistic random walk in an i.i.d. random environment that does not allow retreating in a certain fixed direction. Homogenization and regeneration techniques combine to prove a law of large numbers and an averaged invariance principle. The assumptions are non-nestling and $1+\e$ (resp.\ $2+\e$) moments for the step of the walk uniformly in the environment, for the law of large numbers (resp. invariance principles). We also investigate invariance principles under fixed environments, and invariance principles for the environment-dependent mean of the walk.
We consider an i.i.d. random environment with a strong form of transience on the two dimensional integer lattice. Namely, the walk always moves forward in the y-direction. We prove a functional CLT for the quenched expected position of the random walk indexed by its level crossing times. We begin with a variation of the Martingale Central Limit Theorem. The main part of the paper checks the conditions of the theorem for our problem.
We prove that every random walk in i.i.d. environment in dimension greater than or equal to 2 that has an almost sure positive speed in a certain direction, an annealed invariance principle and some mild integrability condition for regeneration times also satisfies a quenched invariance principle. The argument is based on intersection estimates and a theorem of Bolthausen and Sznitman.
We consider a nearest-neighbor, one-dimensional random walk $\{X_n\}_{n\geq 0}$ in a random i.i.d. environment, in the regime where the walk is transient with speed v_P > 0 and there exists an $s\in(1,2)$ such that the annealed law of $n^{-1/s} (X_n - n v_P)$ converges to a stable law of parameter s. Under the quenched law (i.e., conditioned on the environment), we show that no limit laws are possible. In particular we show that there exist sequences {t_k} and {t_k'} depending on the environment only, such that a quenched central limit theorem holds along the subsequence t_k, but the quenched …
We consider a one dimensional random walk in a random environment (RWRE) with a positive speed $\lim_{n\to\infty}\frac{X_n}{n}=v_α>0$. Gantert and Zeitouni showed that if the environment has both positive and negative local drifts then the quenched slowdown probabilities $P_ω(X_n < xn)$ with $x \in (0,v_α)$ decay approximately like $\exp\{-n^{1-1/s}\}$ for a deterministic $s > 1$. More precisely, they showed that $n^{-γ} \log P_ω( X_n < x n)$ converges to $0$ or $-\infty$ depending on whether $γ> 1-1/s$ or $γ< 1-1/s$. In this paper, we improve on this by showing that $n^{-1+1/s} \log P_ω( X_n …
Consider a random walk in an i.i.d. uniformly elliptic environment in dimensions larger than one. In 2002, Sznitman introduced for each $γ\in(0,1)$ the ballisticity condition $(T)_γ$ and the condition $(T')$ defined as the fulfillment of $(T)_γ$ for each $γ\in(0,1)$. Sznitman proved that $(T')$ implies a ballistic law of large numbers. Furthermore, he showed that for all $γ\in (0.5,1)$, $(T)_γ$ is equivalent to $(T')$. Recently, Berger has proved that in dimensions larger than three, for each $γ\in (0,1)$, condition $(T)_γ$ implies a ballistic law of large numbers. On the other hand, Drewitz a…
We consider transient one-dimensional random walks in random environment with zero asymptotic speed. An aging phenomenon involving the generalized Arcsine law is proved using the localization of the walk at the foot of "valleys" of height $\log t$. In the quenched setting, we also sharply estimate the distribution of the walk at time $t$.
In this thesis, we study the diffusive and ballistic behaviors of random walk in random environment (RWRE) in an integer lattice with dimension at least 2. Our contributions are in three directions: a conditional law of large numbers and regeneration structures for RWRE in Gibbsian environments, quenched invariance principles for balanced elliptic (but non uniformly elliptic) environments, and a proof of the Einstein relation for balanced iid uniformly elliptic environments.
For a random walk in an elliptic i.i.d. random environment in dimension greater than or equal to 4, satisfying the a ballisticity condition slightly weaker than condition (T'), We consider the probability of linear slowdown. We show an upper bound for this probability which is very close to the lower bound obtained by the "naive trap" analysis. As a tool for obtaining the main result, we show an almost local version of the quenched central limit theorem under the same ballisticity condition.
In 2003, Varadhan [V03] developed a robust method for proving quenched and averaged large deviations for random walks in a uniformly elliptic and i.i.d. environment (RWRE) on $\mathbb Z^d$. One fundamental question which remained open was to determine when the quenched and averaged large deviation rate functions agree, and when they do not. In this article we show that for RWRE in uniformly elliptic and i.i.d. environment in $d\geq 4$, the two rate functions agree on any compact set contained in the interior of their domain which does not contain the origin, provided that the disorder of the e…
We consider a discretized version of the quenched Edwards-Wilkinson model for the propagation of a driven interface through a random field of obstacles. Our model consists of a system of ordinary differential equations on a $d$-dimensional lattice coupled by the discrete Laplacian. At each lattice point, the system is subject to a constant driving force and a random obstacle force impeding free propagation. The obstacle force depends on the current state of the solution and thus renders the problem non-linear. For independent and identically distributed obstacle strengths with exponential mome…
We consider a multidimensional random walk in a product random environment with bounded steps, transience in some spatial direction, and high enough moments on the regeneration time. We prove an invariance principle, or functional central limit theorem, under almost every environment for the diffusively scaled centered walk. The main point behind the invariance principle is that the quenched mean of the walk behaves subdiffusively.
We introduce ellipticity criteria for random walks in i.i.d. random environments under which we can extend the ballisticity conditions of Sznitman's and the polynomial effective criteria of Berger, Drewitz and Ramirez originally defined for uniformly elliptic random walks. We prove under them the equivalence of Sznitman's (T') condition with the polynomial effective criterion (P)_M, for M large enough. We furthermore give ellipticity criteria under which a random walk satisfying the polynomial effective criterion, is ballistic, satisfies the annealed central limit theorem or the quenched centr…
In this work, we discuss certain ballistic random walks in random environments on $\mathbb{Z}^d$, and prove the equivalence between the static and dynamic points of view in dimension $d\geq4$. Using this equivalence, we also prove a version of a local limit theorem which relates the local behavior of the quenched and annealed measures of the random walk by a prefactor.
We prove a quenched central limit theorem for random walks in i.i.d. weakly elliptic random environments in the ballistic regime. Such theorems have been proved recently by Rassoul-Agha and Seppäläinen in [10] and Berger and Zeitouni in [2] under the assumption of large finite moments for the regeneration time. In this paper, with the extra $(T)_γ$ condition of Sznitman we reduce the moment condition to ${\Bbb E}(τ^2(\ln τ)^{1+m})<+\infty$ for $m>1+1/γ$, which allows the inclusion of new non-uniformly elliptic examples such as Dirichlet random environments.
Consider a random walk in a uniformly elliptic i.i.d. random environment in dimensions $d\ge 2$. In 2002, Sznitman introduced for each $γ\in (0,1)$ the ballisticity conditions $(T)_γ$ and $(T'),$ the latter being defined as the fulfilment of $(T)_γ$ for all $γ\in (0,1).$ He proved that $(T')$ implies ballisticity and that for each $γ\in (0.5,1),$ $(T)_γ$ is equivalent to $(T')$. It is conjectured that this equivalence holds for all $γ\in (0,1).$ Here we prove that for $γ\in (γ_d,1),$ where $γ_d$ is a dimension dependent constant taking values in the interval $(0.366,0.388),$ $(T)_γ$ is equival…
We are concerned with random walks on $\mathbb{Z}^d$, $d\geq 3$, in an i.i.d. random environment with transition probabilities $ε$-close to those of simple random walk. We assume that the environment is balanced in one fixed coordinate direction, and invariant under reflection in the coordinate hyperplanes. The invariance condition was used in Baur and Bolthausen (2014) as a weaker replacement of isotropy to study exit distributions. We obtain precise results on mean sojourn times in large balls and prove a quenched invariance principle, showing that for almost all environments, the random wal…
We consider a system of independent random walks in a common random environment. Previously, a hydrodynamic limit for the system of RWRE was proved under the assumption that the random walks were transient with positive speed. In this paper we instead consider the case where the random walks are transient but with a sublinear speed of the order $n^κ$ for some $κ\in (0,1)$ and prove a quenched hydrodynamic limit for the system of random walks with time scaled by $n^{1/κ}$ and space scaled by $n$. The most interesting feature of the hydrodynamic limit is that the influence of the environment doe…
We show that a sequence of birth-and-death chains, given by lazy random walks in a (transient) environment (RWRE) on [0; n], exhibits a cutoff in the ballistic regime but does not exhibit a cutoff in the (interior of) the subballistic regime. We investigate the growth of the mixing times for this model. As an important step in the proof, we derive bounds for the quenched expectation and the quenched variance of the hitting times of the RWRE, which are of independent interest.
A transient stochastic process is considered strongly transient if conditioned on returning to the starting location, the expected time it takes to return the the starting location is finite. We characterize strong transience for a one-dimensional random walk in a random environment. We show that under the quenched measure transience is equivalent to strong transience, while under the averaged measure strong transience is equivalent to ballisticity (transience with non-zero limiting speed).
For a random walk in a uniformly elliptic and i.i.d. environment on $\mathbb Z^d$ with $d \geq 4$, we show that the quenched and annealed large deviations rate functions agree on any compact set contained in the boundary $\partial \mathbb{D}:=\{ x \in \mathbb R^d : |x|_1 =1\}$ of their domain which does not intersect any of the $(d-2)$-dimensional facets of $\partial \mathbb{D}$, provided that the disorder of the environment is~low~enough. As a consequence, we obtain a simple explicit formula for both rate functions on $\partial \mathbb{D}$ at low disorder. In contrast to previous works, our r…
In these lecture notes, which are based on the mini-course given at 2013 Prague School on Mathematical Statistical Physics, we discuss ballistic phase of quenched and annealed stretched polymers in random environment on ${\mathbb Z}^d$ with an emphasis on the natural renormalized renewal structures which appear in such models. In the ballistic regime an irreducible decomposition of typical polymers leads to an effectiverandom walk reinterpretation of the latter. In the annealed casethe Ornstein-Zernike theory based on this approach paves the way to an essentially complete control on the level …
We consider one-dimensional random walks in random environment which are transient to the right. Our main interest is in the study of the sub-ballistic regime, where at time $n$ the particle is typically at a distance of order $O(n^κ)$ from the origin, $κ\in(0,1)$. We investigate the probabilities of moderate deviations from this behaviour. Specifically, we are interested in quenched and annealed probabilities of slowdown (at time $n$, the particle is at a distance of order $O(n^{ν_0})$ from the origin, $ν_0\in (0,κ)$), and speedup (at time $n$, the particle is at a distance of order $n^{ν_1}$…
Central limit theorems for random walks in quenched random environments have attracted plenty of attention in the past years. More recently still, finer local limit theorems -- yielding a Gaussian density multiplied by a highly oscillatory modulating factor -- for such models have been obtained. In the one-dimensional nearest-neighbor case with i.i.d. transition probabilities, local limits of uniformly elliptic ballistic walks are now well understood. We complete the picture by proving a similar result for the only recurrent case, namely the balanced one, in which such a walk is diffusive. The…
We investigate the free energy of nearest-neighbor random walks on $\mathbb{Z}^d$, endowed with a drift along the first axis and evolving in a nonnegative random potential given by i.i.d. random variables. Our main result concerns the ballistic regime in dimensions $d\geq4$, at which we show that quenched and annealed Lyapunov exponents are equal as soon as the strength of the potential is small enough.
