Consider a random walk in a uniformly elliptic i.i.d. random environment in dimensions $d\ge 2$. In 2002, Sznitman introduced for each $γ\in (0,1)$ the ballisticity conditions $(T)_γ$ and $(T'),$ the latter being defined as the fulfilment of $(T)_γ$ for all $γ\in (0,1).$ He proved that $(T')$ implies ballisticity and that for each $γ\in (0.5,1),$ $(T)_γ$ is equivalent to $(T')$. It is conjectured that this equivalence holds for all $γ\in (0,1).$ Here we prove that for $γ\in (γ_d,1),$ where $γ_d$ is a dimension dependent constant taking values in the interval $(0.366,0.388),$ $(T)_γ$ is equivalent to $(T').$ This is achieved by a detour along the effective criterion, the fulfilment of which we establish by a combination of techniques developed by Sznitman giving a control on the occurrence of atypical quenched exit distributions through boxes.
We study the asymptotic behaviour of random walks in i.i.d. non-elliptic random environments on $\mathbb{Z}^d$. Standard conditions (and proofs) for ballisticity and the central limit theorem require ellipticity. We use oriented percolation and martingale arguments to give non-trivial local conditions for ballisticity and an annealed invariance principle in the non-elliptic setting.
We consider random walks in Dirichlet environment, introduced by Enriquez and Sabot in 2006. As this distribution on environments is not uniformly elliptic, the annealed integrability of exit times out of a given finite subset is a non-trivial property. We provide here an explicit equivalent condition for this integrability to happen, on general directed graphs. Such integrability problems arise for instance from the definition of Kalikow auxiliary random walk. Using our condition, we prove a refined version of the ballisticity criterion given by Enriquez and Sabot.
The Tree Builder Random Walk is a special random walk that evolves on trees whose size increases with time, randomly and depending upon the walker. After every s steps of the walker, a random number of vertices are added to the tree and attached to the current position of the walker. These processes share similarities with other important classes of markovian and non-markovian random walks presenting a large variety of behaviors according to parameters specifications. We show that for a large and most significant class of tree builder random walks, the process is either null recurrent or trans…
We characterize ballistic behavior for general i.i.d. random walks in random environments on $\mathbb{Z}$ with bounded jumps. The two characterizations we provide do not use uniform ellipticity conditions. They are natural in the sense that they both relate to formulas for the limiting speed in the nearest-neighbor case. Note: This paper duplicates results from some versions of the preprint "Random walks in Dirichlet random environments on $\mathbb{Z}$ with bounded jumps." (arxiv: 2104.14950). The present paper is being split off for reasons of length, and the plan is to remove these results f…
We consider random walks in i.i.d. elliptic random environments which are not uniformly elliptic. We introduce a computable condition in dimension $d=2$ and a general condition valid for dimensions $d\ge 2$ expressed in terms of the exit time from a box, which ensure that local trapping would not inhibit a ballistic behavior of the random walk. An important technical innovation related to our computable condition, is the introduction of a geometrical point of view to classify the way in which the random walk can become trapped, either in an edge, a wedge or a square. Furthermore, we prove that…
The conditions $(T)_γ,$ $γ\in (0,1),$ which have been introduced by Sznitman in 2002, have had a significant impact on research in random walk in random environment. Among others, these conditions entail a ballistic behaviour as well as an invariance principle. They require the stretched exponential decay of certain slab exit probabilities for the random walk under the averaged measure and are asymptotic in nature. The main goal of this paper is to show that in all relevant dimensions (i.e., $d \ge 2$), in order to establish the conditions $(T)_γ$, it is actually enough to check a correspondin…
Consider a random walk in an i.i.d. uniformly elliptic environment in dimensions larger than one. In 2002, Sznitman introduced for each $γ\in(0,1)$ the ballisticity condition $(T)_γ$ and the condition $(T')$ defined as the fulfillment of $(T)_γ$ for each $γ\in(0,1)$. Sznitman proved that $(T')$ implies a ballistic law of large numbers. Furthermore, he showed that for all $γ\in (0.5,1)$, $(T)_γ$ is equivalent to $(T')$. Recently, Berger has proved that in dimensions larger than three, for each $γ\in (0,1)$, condition $(T)_γ$ implies a ballistic law of large numbers. On the other hand, Drewitz a…
For a random walk in an elliptic i.i.d. random environment in dimension greater than or equal to 4, satisfying the a ballisticity condition slightly weaker than condition (T'), We consider the probability of linear slowdown. We show an upper bound for this probability which is very close to the lower bound obtained by the "naive trap" analysis. As a tool for obtaining the main result, we show an almost local version of the quenched central limit theorem under the same ballisticity condition.
We study the behaviour of a sequence of biased random walks X(i), i>=0 on a sequence of random graphs, where the initial graph is Zd and otherwise the graph for the i-th walk is the trace of the (i - 1)-st walk. The sequence of bias vectors is chosen so that each walk is transient. We prove the aforementioned transience and a law of large numbers, and provide criteria for ballisticity and sub-ballisticity. We give examples of sequences of biases for which each X(i), i>=1 is (transient but) not ballistic, and the limiting graph is an infinite simple (self-avoiding) path. We also give examples f…
We examine a class of random walks in random environments on $\mathbb{Z}$ with bounded jumps, a generalization of the classic one-dimensional model. The environments we study have i.i.d. transition probability vectors drawn from Dirichlet distributions. For this model, we characterize recurrence and transience, and in the transient case we characterize ballisticity. For ballisticity, we give two parameters, $κ_0$ and $κ_1$. The parameter $κ_0$ governs finite trapping effects, and $κ_1$ governs repeated traversals of arbitrarily large regions of the graph. We show that the walk is right-transie…
We prove that every random walk in a uniformly elliptic random environment satisfying the cone mixing condition and a non-effective polynomial ballisticity condition with high enough degree has an asymptotic direction.
In this article, we consider the speed of the random walks in a (uniformly elliptic and i.i.d.) random environment (RWRE) under perturbation. We obtain the derivative of the speed of the RWRE w.r.t. the perturbation, under the assumption that one of the following holds: (i) the environment is balanced and the perturbation satisfies a Kalikow-type ballisticity condition, (ii) the environment satisfies Sznitman's ballisticity condition. This is a generalized version of the Einstein relation for RWRE. Our argument is based on a modification of Lebowitz-Rost's argument developed in [Stochastic Pro…
We prove ballistic behaviour as well as an annealed functional central limit theorem for random walks in mixing random environments (RWRE). The ballistic hypothesis will be an effective polynomial condition as the one introduced by Berger, Drewitz, and Ram\'ırez (\emph{Comm. Pure Appl. Math,} {\bf 67}, (2014) 1947--1973). The novel idea therein was the construction of several simultaneous renormalization steps, providing more flexibility for seed estimates. For our proof, we indeed follow a similar path, and introduce a new mixing effective criterion which will be implied by the polynomial con…
We give a new criterion for ballistic behavior of random walks in random environments which are low disorder perturbations of the simple symmetric random walk on $\mathbb{Z}^d$, for $d\geq 2$. This extends the results established by Sznitman in 2003 and, in particular, allow us to give new examples of ballistic RWREs in dimension $d=3$ which do not satisfy Kalikow's condition. Essentially, this new criterion states that ballisticity occurs whenever the average local drift of the walk is not too small when compared to the standard deviation of the environment. Its proof relies on applying coars…
We study biased random walk on subcritical and supercritical Galton-Watson trees conditioned to survive in the transient, sub-ballistic regime. By considering offspring laws with infinite variance, we extend previously known results for the walk on the supercritical tree and observe new trapping phenomena for the walk on the subcritical tree which, in this case, always yield sub-ballisticity. This is contrary to the walk on the supercritical tree which always has some ballistic phase.
It is conjectured that in dimensions $d\ge 2$ any random walk in an i.i.d. uniformly elliptic random environment (RWRE) which is directionally transient is ballistic. The ballisticity conditions for RWRE somehow interpolate between directional transience and ballisticity and have served to quantify the gap which would need to be proven in order to answer affirmatively this conjecture. Two important ballisticity conditions introduced by Sznitman \cite{Sz02} in 2001 and 2002 are the so called conditions $(T')$ and $(T)$: given a slab of width $L$ orthogonal to $l$, condition $(T')$ in direction …
A transient stochastic process is considered strongly transient if conditioned on returning to the starting location, the expected time it takes to return the the starting location is finite. We characterize strong transience for a one-dimensional random walk in a random environment. We show that under the quenched measure transience is equivalent to strong transience, while under the averaged measure strong transience is equivalent to ballisticity (transience with non-zero limiting speed).
Mott variable range hopping is a fundamental mechanism for low-temperature electron conduction in disordered solids in the regime of Anderson localization. In a mean field approximation, it reduces to a random walk (shortly, Mott random walk) on a random marked point process with possible long-range jumps. We consider here the one-dimensional Mott random walk and we add an external field (or a bias to the right). We show that the bias makes the walk transient, and investigate its linear speed. Our main results are conditions for ballisticity (positive linear speed) and for sub-ballisticity (ze…
We consider a random walker in a dynamic random environment given by a system of independent simple symmetric random walks. We obtain ballisticity results under two types of perturbations: low particle density, and strong local drift on particles. Surprisingly, the random walker may behave very differently depending on whether the underlying environment particles perform lazy or non-lazy random walks, which is related to a notion of permeability of the system. We also provide a strong law of large numbers, a functional central limit theorem and large deviation bounds under an ellipticity condi…
We study the strong form of the ballistic conjecture for random walks in random environments (RWRE). This conjecture asserts that any RWRE which is directionally transient for a nonempty open set of directions satisfies condition $(T)$ (annealed exponential decay for the unlikely exit probability). Specifically, we introduce a ballisticity condition which is fulfilled as soon as a polynomial condition of degree greater than $d-1$ holds. Under that hypothesis we prove condition $(T)$, which turns this condition into the weakest-known ballisticity assumption. We recall that standard arguments to…
Several phase transitions for excited random walks on the integers are known to be characterized by a certain drift parameter delta. For recurrence/transience the critical threshold is |delta|=1, for ballisticity it is |delta|=2 and for diffusivity |delta|=4. In this paper we establish a phase transition at |delta|=3. We show that the expected return time of the walker to the starting point, conditioned on return, is finite iff |delta|>3. This result follows from an explicit description of the tail behaviour of the return time as a function of delta, which is achieved by diffusion approximatio…
We introduce ellipticity criteria for random walks in i.i.d. random environments under which we can extend the ballisticity conditions of Sznitman's and the polynomial effective criteria of Berger, Drewitz and Ramirez originally defined for uniformly elliptic random walks. We prove under them the equivalence of Sznitman's (T') condition with the polynomial effective criterion (P)_M, for M large enough. We furthermore give ellipticity criteria under which a random walk satisfying the polynomial effective criterion, is ballistic, satisfies the annealed central limit theorem or the quenched centr…
We sharpen ellipticity criteria for random walks in i.i.d. random environments introduced by Campos and Ram\'ırez which ensure ballistic behavior. Furthermore, we construct new examples of random environments for which the walk satisfies the polynomial ballisticity criteria of Berger, Drewitz and Ram\'ırez. As a corollary, we can exhibit a new range of values for the parameters of Dirichlet random environments in dimension $d=2$ under which the corresponding random walk is ballistic.
We consider a nearest-neighbor random walk on $\mathbb{Z}$ whose probability $ω_x(j)$ to jump to the right from site $x$ depends not only on $x$ but also on the number of prior visits $j$ to $x$. The collection $(ω_x(j))_{x\in\mathbb{Z},n\ge 0}$ is sometimes called the "cookie environment" due to the following informal interpretation. Upon each visit to a site the walker eats a cookie from the cookie stack at that site and chooses the transition probabilities according to the "strength" of the cookie eaten. We assume that the cookie stacks are i.i.d. and that the cookie "strengths" within the …
We consider a random walk in random environment in the low disorder regime on $\mathbb Z^d$. That is, the probability that the random walk jumps from a site $x$ to a nearest neighboring site $x+e$ is given by $p(e)+εξ(x,e)$, where $p(e)$ is deterministic, $\{\{ξ(x,e):|e|_1=1\}:x\in\mathbb Z^d\}$ are i.i.d. and $ε>0$ is a parameter which is eventually chosen small enough. We establish an asymptotic expansion in $ε$ for the invariant measure of the environmental process whenever a ballisticity condition is satisfied. As an application of our expansion, we derive a numerical expression up to firs…
We give new criteria for ballistic behavior of random walks in random environment which are perturbations of the simple symmetric random walk on $\mathbb Z^d$ in dimensions $d\ge 4$. Our results extend those of Sznitman [Ann. Probab. 31, no. 1, 285-322 (2003)] and the recent ones of Ramírez and Saglietti [Preprint, arXiv:1808.01523], and allow us to exhibit new examples in dimensions $d\ge 4$ of ballistic random walks which do not satisfy Kalikow's condition. Our criteria implies ballisticity whenever the average of the local drift of the walk is not too small compared with an appropriate mome…
We consider a random walk in a uniformly elliptic i.i.d. random environment in $\mathbb Z^d$ for $d\ge 2$. It is believed that whenever the random walk is transient in a given direction it is necessarily ballistic. In order to quantify the gap which would be needed to prove this equivalence, several ballisticity conditions have been introduced. In particular, in 2001 and 2002, Sznitman defined the so called conditions $(T)$ and $(T')$. The first one is the requirement that certain unlikely exit probabilities from a set of slabs decay exponentially fast with their width $L$. The second one is t…
Fix integers $d \geq 2$ and $k\geq d-1$. Consider a random walk $X_0, X_1, \ldots$ in $\mathbb{R}^d$ in which, given $X_0, X_1, \ldots, X_n$ ($n \geq k$), the next step $X_{n+1}$ is uniformly distributed on the unit ball centred at $X_n$, but conditioned that the line segment from $X_n$ to $X_{n+1}$ intersects the convex hull of $\{0, X_{n-k}, \ldots, X_n\}$ only at $X_n$. For $k = \infty$ this is a version of the model introduced by Angel et al., which is conjectured to be ballistic, i.e., to have a limiting speed and a limiting direction. We establish ballisticity for the finite-$k$ model, a…
Random walk in random environment (RWRE) is a fundamental model of statistical mechanics, describing the movement of a particle in a highly disordered and inhomogeneous medium as a random walk with random jump probabilities. It has been introduced in a series of papers by Chernov and Temkin as a model for DNA chain replication and crystal growth, and also as a model for turbulent behavior in fluids through a Lorentz gas description by Sinai. It is a simple but powerful model for a variety of complex large-scale disordered phenomena arising from fields such as physics, biology and engineering. …
We study the pinning phase transition for discrete surface dynamics in random environments. A renormalization procedure is devised to prove that the interface moves with positive velocity under a finite size condition. This condition is then checked for different examples of microscopic dynamics to illustrate the flexibility of the method. We show in our examples the existence of a phase transition for various models, including high dimensional interfaces, dependent environments and environments with arbitrarily deep obstacles. Finally, our ballisticity criterion is proved to be valid up to th…
The random walk in Dirichlet environment is a random walk in random environment where the transition probabilities are independent Dirichlet random variables. This random walk exhibits a property of statistical invariance by time-reversal which leads to several results. More precisely, a time-reversed random walk in Dirichlet environment (with null divergence) is also a random walk in random environment where the transition probabilities are independent Dirichlet random variables with different parameters. We show that on all graphs that satisfy a few weak assumptions, a random walk in random …
We calculate explicit speeds for random walks in uniform degenerate random environments. For certain non-uniform random environments, we calculate speeds that are non-monotone.
We consider a recurrent random walk in random environment on a regular tree. Under suitable general assumptions upon the distribution of the environment, we show that the walk exhibits an unusual slow movement: the order of magnitude of the walk in the first $n$ steps is $(\log n)^3$.
We consider a non-nestling random walk in a product random environment. We assume an exponential moment for the step of the walk, uniformly in the environment. We prove an invariance principle (functional central limit theorem) under almost every environment for the centered and diffusively scaled walk. The main point behind the invariance principle is that the quenched mean of the walk behaves subdiffusively.
There is a condition (T'), such that it is the necessary condition that a random walk in random environment is ballistic. Under this condition, we show the law of the iterated logarithm for a random walk in random environment.
We look at random walks in Dirichlet environment. It was known that in dimension $d\geq 3$, if the walk is sub-ballistic, the displacement of the walk is polynomial of order $κ$ for some explicit $κ$. We show that the walk, after renormalization, actually converges to a $κ$-stable completely asymmetric Levy Process.
We study a general class of random walks driven by a uniquely ergodic Markovian environment. Under a coupling condition on the environment we obtain strong ergodicity properties and concentration inequalities for the environment as seen from the position of the walker, i.e the environment process. We also obtain ergodicity of the uniquely ergodic measure of the environment process as well as continuity as a function of the jump rates of the walker. As a consequence we obtain several limit theorems, such as law of large numbers, Einstein relation, central limit theorem and concentration propert…
We consider a branching system of random walk in random environment (in location) in $\mathbb{N}$. We will give the exact limit value of $\frac{M_{n}}{n}$, where $M_{n}$ denotes the minimal position of branching random walk at time $n$. A key step in the proof is to transfer our branching random walks in random environment (in location) to branching random walks in random environment (in time), by use of Bramson's "branching processes within a branching process" .
We consider a random walk $\{S_n\}_{n\in \mathbb{N}}$ in time-inhomogeneous random environment $ξ$. For almost each realization of $ξ$, we formulate a quenched harmonic function, based on which we can define the random walk in random environment conditioned to stay positive by the Doob's $h$-transform. Furthermore, we prove a quenched invariance principle for the conditioned random walk for almost each realization of $ξ$.
Although the theoretical behavior of one-dimensional random walks in random environments is well understood, the numerical evaluation of various characteristics of such processes has received relatively little attention. This paper develops new theory and methodology for the computation of the drift of the random walk for various dependent random environments, including $k$-dependent and moving average environments.
We propose a class of models of random walks in a random environment where an exact solution can be given for a stationary distribution. The tool is the detailed balance equations.
We study dynamic random conductance models on $\mathbb{Z}^2$ in which the environment evolves as a reversible Markov process that is stationary under space-time shifts. We prove under a second moment assumption that two conditionally independent random walks in the same environment collide infinitely often almost surely. These results apply in particular to random walks on dynamical percolation.
We consider the small deviation probability for random walk with time-inhomogeneous random environment. Compared with the result in Mogul'ski\uı (1974) for the i.i.d. random walk, the rate is smaller (due to the random environment), which is specified in terms of the quenched and annealed variance.
According to Comets, Gantert and Zeitouni on the one hand and to Derriennic on the other hand, some functionals associated to the hitting times of random walks in random environment on the integer line coincide, for the walk itself and for the walk in the reversed environment. We show that these two duality principles are algebraically equivalent, that they both stem from the Markov property of the walk in a fixed environment, and not of the ergodicity of the model, and that there exists finitist and almost sure versions of this duality.
We consider a random walk in an i.i.d. random environment on Z that is perturbed by cookies of strength 1. The number of cookies per site is assumed to be i.i.d. Results on the speed of the random walk are obtained. Our main tool is the correspondence in certain cases between the random walk and a branching process in a random environment with migration.
We study one-dimensional nearest neighbour random walk in site-random environment. We establish precise (sharp) large deviations in the so-called ballistic regime, when the random walk drifts to the right with linear speed. In the sub-ballistic regime, when the speed is sublinear, we describe the precise probability of slowdown.
We show that for a weakly dense subset of the domain of attraction of a positive stable random variable of index $0<α<1$($DOA\left(α\right))$ the functional stable convergence is a time-changed renewal convergence of distribution of finite mean. Applied to Continuous Time Random Walk(CTRW) á la Montroll and Wiess we show that CTRW with renewal times in a weakly dense set of $DOA\left(α\right)$ can be realized as random walk in a random environment. We find the quenched limit and give a bound on the error of the approximation.
This paper states a law of large numbers for a random walk in a random iid environment on ${\mathbb Z}^d$, where the environment follows some Dirichlet distribution. Moreover, we give explicit bounds for the asymptotic velocity of the process and also an asymptotic expansion of this velocity at low disorder.
An intrinsic branching structure within the transient random walk on a strip in a random environment is revealed. As applications, which enables us to express the hitting time explicitly, and specifies the density of the absolutely continuous invariant measure for the "environments viewed from the particle".
We consider random walks in a balanced random environment in $\mathbb{Z}^d$, $d\geq 2$. We first prove an invariance principle (for $d\ge2$) and the transience of the random walks when $d\ge 3$ (recurrence when $d=2$) in an ergodic environment which is not uniformly elliptic but satisfies certain moment condition. Then, using percolation arguments, we show that under mere ellipticity, the above results hold for random walks in i.i.d. balanced environments.
We consider a left-transient random walk in a random environment on Z that will be disturbed by cookies inducing a drift to the right of strength 1. The number of cookies per site is i.i.d. and independent of the environment. Criteria for recurrence and transience of the random walk are obtained. For this purpose we use subcritical branching processes in random environments with immigration and formulate criteria for recurrence and transience for these processes.
We construct a two-dimensional counterexample of a random walk in random environment (RWRE). The environment is stationary, mixing and perturbative, and the corresponding RWRE has non-trivial probability to wander off to the upper right. This is in contrast to the 0-1-law that holds for i.i.d.\ environments.
