We show that the unique isoperimetric hypersurfaces in $\mathbb{R}^n$ with density $r^p$ for $n \ge 3$ and $p>0$ are spheres that pass through the origin.
Based on Markvorsen and Palmer's work on mean time exit and isoperimetric inequalities we establish slightly better isoperimetric inequalities and mean time exit estimates for minimal submanifolds of $N\times\mathbb{R}$. We also prove isoperimetric inequalities for submanifolds of Hadamard spaces with tamed second fundamental form.
We prove an Hersch's type isoperimetric inequality for the third positive eigenvalue on $\mathbb S^2$. Our method builds on the theory we developped to construct extremal metrics on Riemannian surfaces in conformal classes for any eigenvalue.
Isoperimetric regions minimize the size of their boundaries among all regions with the same volume. In Euclidean and Hyperbolic space, isoperimetric regions are round balls. We show that isoperimetric regions in two and three-dimensional nonpositively curved manifolds are not necessarily balls, and need not even be connected.
In this paper, the isoperimetric problem in Randers planes, $(\mathbb{R}^2,F=α+β)$, which are slight deformation of the Euclidean plane $(\mathbb{R}^2,α)$ by suitable one forms $β$, have been studied. We prove that the circles centred at the origin achieves the local maximum area of the isoperimetric problem with respect to well known volume forms in Finsler geometry.
Given a positive lower semi-continuous density $f$ on $\mathbb{R}^2$ the weighted volume $V_f:=f\mathscr{L}^2$ is defined on the $\mathscr{L}^2$-measurable sets in $\mathbb{R}^2$. The $f$-weighted perimeter of a set of finite perimeter $E$ in $\mathbb{R}^2$ is written $P_f(E)$. We study minimisers for the weighted isoperimetric problem \[ I_f(v):=\inf\Big\{ P_f(E):E\text{ is a set of finite perimeter in }\mathbb{R}^2\text{ and }V_f(E)=v\Big\} \] for $v>0$. Suppose $f$ takes the form $f:\mathbb{R}^2\rightarrow(0,+\infty);x\mapsto e^{h(|x|)}$ where $h:[0,+\infty)\rightarrow\mathbb{R}$ is a non-d…
In this work we investigate the following isoperimetric problem in the hyperbolic plane: to find the regions of prescribed area with minimal perimeter between two parallel horocycles. We give an explicit and detailed description of all such regions.
Let $(T^k,h_k)=(S_{r_1}^1\times S_{r_2}^1 \times ... \times S_{r_k}^1, dt_1^2+dt_2^2+...+dt_k^2)$ be flat tori, $r_k\geq ...\geq r_2\geq r_1>0$ and $(\mathbb R^n,g_E)$ the Euclidean space with the flat metric. We compute the isoperimetric profile of $(T^2\times \mathbb R^n, h_2+g_E)$, $2\leq n\leq 5$, for small and big values of the volume. These computations give explicit lower bounds for the isoperimetric profile of $T^2\times\mathbb R^n$. We also note that similar estimates for $(T^k\times \mathbb R^n, h_k+g_E)$, $2\leq k\leq5$, $2\leq n\leq 7-k$, may be computed, provided estimates for $(T…
In this paper, aimed at exploring the fundamental properties of isoperimetric region in $3$-manifold $(M^3,g)$ which is asymptotic to Anti-de Sitter-Schwarzschild manifold with scalar curvature $R\geq -6$, we prove that connected isoperimetric region $\{D_i\}$ with $\mathcal{H}_g ^3(D_i)\geq δ_0>0$ cannot slide off to the infinity of $(M^3,g)$ provided that $(M^3,g)$ is not isometric to the hyperbolic space. Furthermore, we prove that isoperimetric region $\{D_i\}$ with topological sphere $\{\partial D_i\}$ as boundary is exhausting regions of $M$ if Hawking mass $m_H(\partial D_i)$ has unifor…
In this work we classify the stable regions (second order minima of perimeter under an area constraint) in tori of revolution with piecewise continuous decreasing Gauss curvature from the longest parallel and with a horizontal symmetry. Some applications to isoperimetric problems are also given.
It is well known that isoperimetric regions in a smooth compact $(n+1)$-manifold are smooth, up to a closed set of codimension at most $6$. In this note, we first construct an $8$-dimensional compact smooth manifold whose unique isoperimetric region with half volume that of the manifold exhibits two isolated singularities. And then, for $n\geq 7$, using Smale's construction of singular homological area minimizers for higher dimensions, we construct a Riemannian manifold such that the unique isoperimetric region of half volume, with singular set the submanifold $§^{n-7}$.
We consider surfaces in ${\mathbb R}^3$ of type ${\mathbb S}^2$ which minimize the Willmore functional with prescribed isoperimetric ratio. The existence of smooth minimizers was proved by Schygulla (Archive Rational Mechanics and Analysis, 2012). In the singular limit when the isoperimetric ratio converges to zero, he showed convergence to a double round sphere in the sense of varifolds. Here we give a full blowup analysis of this limit, showing that the two spheres are connected by a catenoidal neck. Besides its geometric interest, the problem was studied as a simplified model in the theory …
In this paper we consider the isoperimetric profile of convex cylinders $K\times\mathbb{R}^q$, where $K$ is an $m$-dimensional convex body, and of cylindrically bounded convex sets, i.e, those with a relatively compact orthogonal projection over some hyperplane of $\mathbb{R}^{n+1}$, asymptotic to a right convex cylinder of the form $K\times\mathbb{R}$, with $K\subset\mathbb{R}^n$. Results concerning the concavity of the isoperimetric profile, existence of isoperimetric regions, and geometric descriptions of isoperimetric regions for small and large volumes are obtained.
For any closed Riemannian manifold $X$ we prove that large isoperimetric regions in $X\times{\mathbb R}^n$ are of the form $X\times$(Euclidean ball). We prove that if $X$ has non-negative Ricci curvature then the only soap bubbles enclosing a large volume are the products $X\times$(Euclidean sphere). We give an example of a surface $X$, with Gaussian curvature negative somewhere, such that the product $X\times{\mathbb R}$ contains stable soap bubbles of arbitrarily large enclosed volume which do not even project surjectively onto the $X$ factor.
We have discovered a "little" gap in our proof of the sharp conjecture that in $\mathbb{R}^n$ with volume and perimeter densities $r^m$ and $r^k$, balls about the origin are uniquely isoperimetric if $0 < m \leq k - k/(n+k-1)$, that is, if they are stable (and $m > 0$). The implicit unjustified assumption is that the generating curve is convex.
We prove that geodesic balls centered at some base point are isoperimetric in the real hyperbolic space $H_{\mathbb R}^n$ endowed with a smooth, radial, strictly log-convex density on the volume and perimeter. This is an analogue of the result by G. R. Chambers for log-convex densities on $\mathbb R^n$. As an application we prove that in any rank one symmetric space of non-compact type, geodesic balls are isoperimetric in a class of sets enjoying a suitable notion of radial symmetry.
Given closed Riemannian manifold $(M^n, g)$ of positive Ricci curvature $Ricci(g) \geq (n-1)g$ we study isoperimetric regions on the spherical cone over $M$. When $g$ is Einstein we use this to compute the Yamabe constant of $(M \times {\bf R}, g + dt^2)$ and so to obtain lower bounds for the Yamabe invariant of $M\times S^1$.
Let $(M,g)$ be a complete Riemannian $3$-manifold asymptotic to Schwarzschild-anti-deSitter and with scalar curvature $R \geq - 6$. Building on work of A.~Neves and G.~Tian and of the first-named author, we show that the leaves of the canonical foliation of $(M, g)$ are the unique solutions of the isoperimetric problem for their area. The assumption $R \geq -6$ is necessary. This is the first characterization result for large isoperimetric regions in the asymptotically hyperbolic setting that does not assume exact rotational symmetry at infinity.
We study, on a weighted Riemannian manifold of Ric$_{N} \geq K > 0$ for $N < -1$, when equality holds in the isoperimetric inequality. Our main theorem asserts that such a manifold is necessarily isometric to the warped product $\mathbb{R} \times_{\cosh(\sqrt{K/(1-N)}t)} Σ^{n-1}$ of hyperbolic nature, where $Σ^{n-1}$ is an $(n-1)$-dimensional manifold with lower weighted Ricci curvature bound and $\mathbb{R}$ is equipped with a hyperbolic cosine measure. This is a similar phenomenon to the equality condition of Poincaré inequality. Moreover, every isoperimetric minimizer set is isometric to a …
In this paper we prove that isoperimetric sets in three-dimensional homogeneous spaces diffeomorphic to $\mathbb{R}^3$ are topological balls. We also prove that in three-dimensional homogeneous spheres isopermetric sets are either two-spheres or symmetric genus-one tori. We then apply our first result to the three-dimensional Heisenberg group $\mathsf{H}^1$, characterizing the isoperimetric sets and constants for a family of Riemannian adapted metrics. Using $Γ$-convergence of the perimeter functionals, we also settle an isoperimetric conjecture in $\mathsf{H}^1$ posed by P.Pansu.
The aim of this article is: (a) To establish the existence of the best isoperimetric constants for the $(H^1,BMO)$-normal conformal metrics $e^{2u}|dx|^2$ on $\mathbb R^n$, $n\ge 3$, i.e., the conformal metrics with the Q-curvature orientated conditions $$ (-Δ)^{n/2}u\in H^1(\mathbb R^n) & \ u(x)=\hbox{const.}+\frac{\int_{\mathbb R^n}(\log\frac{|\cdot|}{|x-\cdot|})(-Δ)^{n/2} u(\cdot) d\mathcal{H}^n(\cdot)}{2^{n-1}π^{n/2}Γ(n/2)}; $$ (b) To prove that $(nω_n^\frac1n)^\frac{n}{n-1}$ is the optimal upper bound of the best isoperimetric constants for the complete $(H^1,BMO)$-normal conformal metric…
Given a compact Riemannian manifold $M$ without boundary, we show that large isoperimetric regions in $M\times\mathbb{R}^k$ are tubular neighborhoods of $M\times\{x\}$, with $x\in\mathbb{R}^k$.
In this paper we consider the problem of minimizing the relative perimeter under a volume constraint in the interior of a conically bounded convex set, i.e., an unbounded convex body admitting an \emph{exterior} asymptotic cone. Results concerning existence of isoperimetric regions, the behavior of the isoperimetric profile for large volumes, and a characterization of isoperimetric regions of large volume in conically bounded convex sets of revolution is obtained.
We study the isoperimetric problem for Euclidean space endowed with a continuous density. In dimension one, we characterize isoperimetric regions for a unimodal density. In higher dimensions, we prove existence results and we derive stability conditions, which lead to the conjecture that for a radial log-convex density, balls about the origin are isoperimetric regions. Finally, we prove this conjecture and the uniqueness of minimizers for the density $\exp (|x|^2)$ by using symmetrization techniques.
We characterize the standard $\mathbb{S}^3$ as the closed Ricci-positive 3-manifold with scalar curvature at least 6 having isoperimetric surfaces of largest area: $4π$. As a corollary we answer in the affirmative an interesting special case of a conjecture of Min-Oo's on the scalar curvature rigidity of the upper hemisphere..
We study the problem of existence of isoperimetric regions for large volumes, in $C^0$-locally asymptotically Euclidean Riemannian manifolds with a finite number of $C^0$-asymptotically Schwarzschild ends. Then we give a geometric characterization of these isoperimetric regions, extending previous results contained in [EM13b], [EM13a], and [BE13]. Moreover strengthening a little bit the speed of convergence to the Schwarzschild metric we obtain existence of isoperimetric regions for all volumes for a class of manifolds that we named $C^0$-strongly asymptotic Schwarzschild, extending results of…
We reinterpret the renormalized volume as the asymptotic difference of the isoperimetric profiles for convex co-compact hyperbolic 3-manifolds. By similar techniques we also prove a sharp Minkowski inequality for horospherically convex sets in $\mathbb{H}^3$. Finally, we include the classification of stable constant mean curvature surfaces in regions bounded by two geodesic planes in $\mathbb{H}^3$ or in cyclic quotients of $\mathbb{H}^3$.
Given a compact Riemannian manifold with density $M$ without boundary and the real line $\mathbb{R}$ with constant density, we prove that isoperimetric regions of large volume in $M\times\mathbb{R}$ with the product density are slabs of the form $M\times [a,b]$. We previously prove, as a necessary step, the existence of isoperimetric regions in any manifold of density where a subgroup of the group of transformations preserving weighted perimeter and volume acts cocompactly.
In this work we investigate the following isoperimetric problem: to find the regions of prescribed volume with minimal boundary area between two parallel horospheres in hyperbolic 3-space (the area of the part of the boundary contained in the horospheres is not included). We reduce the problem to the study of rotationally invariant regions and obtain the possible isoperimetric solutions by studying the behaviour of the profile curves of the rotational surfaces with constant mean curvature in the hyperbolic space.
In a compact orbifold, for small prescribed volume, an isoperimetric region is close to a small metric ball; in a Euclidean orbifold, it is a small metric ball.
In this article, by following the method in \cite{PT}, combining Willmore energy with isoperimetric inequalities, we construct two examples of singularities under mean curvature flow in $\mathbb{H}^3$. More precisely, there exists a torus, which must develop a singularity under MCF before the volume it encloses decreases to zero. There also exists a topological sphere in the shape of a dumbbell, which must develop a singularity in the flow before its area shrinks to zero. Simultaneously, by using the flow, we proved an isoperimetric inequality for some domains in $\mathbb{H}^3$.
We study the isoperimetric problem for anisotropic left-invariant perimeter measures on $\mathbb R^3$, endowed with the Heisenberg group structure. The perimeter is associated with a left-invariant norm $ϕ$ on the horizontal distribution. We first prove a representation formula for the $ϕ$-perimeter of regular sets and, assuming some regularity on $ϕ$ and on its dual norm $ϕ^*$, we deduce a foliation property by sub-Finsler geodesics of $\mathrm C^2$-smooth surfaces with constant $ϕ$-curvature. We then prove that the characteristic set of $\mathrm C^2$-smooth surfaces that are locally extremal…
For a complete noncompact connected Riemannian manifold with bounded geometry, we prove the existence of isoperimetric regions in a larger space obtained by adding finitely many limit manifolds at infinity. As one of many possible applications, we extend properties of the isoperimetric profile from compact manifolds to such noncompact manifolds.
Employing the affine normal flow, we prove a stability version of the $p$-affine isoperimetric inequality for $p\geq1$ in $\mathbb{R}^2$ in the class of origin-symmetric convex bodies. That is, if $K$ is an origin-symmetric convex body in $\mathbb{R}^2$ such that it has area $π$ and its $p$-affine perimeter is close enough to the one of an ellipse with the same area, then, after applying a special linear transformation, $K$ is close to an ellipse in the Hausdorff distance.
We consider the isoperimetric problem in planar sectors with density $r^{p}$, and with density $a>1$ inside the unit disk and $1$ outside. We characterize solutions as a function of sector angle. We also solve the isoperimetric problem in $\mathbb{R}^{n}$ with density $r^{p},\; p<0$.
In a Riemannian manifold with a smooth positive function that weights the associated Hausdorff measures we study stable sets, i.e., second order minima of the weighted perimeter under variations preserving the weighted volume. By assuming local convexity of the boundary and certain behaviour of the Bakry-Émery-Ricci tensor we deduce rigidity properties for stable sets by using deformations constructed from parallel vector fields tangent to the boundary. As a consequence, we completely classify the stable sets in some Riemannian cylinders $Ω\times\mathbb{R}$ with product weights. Finally, we al…
We describe explicitly the large volume isoperimetric regions of a natural class of asymptotically flat manifolds, in any dimension. These isoperimetric regions detect the mass and the center of mass of such manifolds when viewed as initial data sets for the Einstein equations in general relativity. Using the positivity of the isoperimetric mass established by G. Huisken we prove an existence result for large isoperimetric regions in general asymptotically flat three manifolds with non-negative scalar curvature.
We prove existence of regions minimizing perimeter under a volume constraint in contact sub-Riemannian manifolds such that their quotient by the group of contact transformations preserving the sub-Riemannian metric is compact.
We study the problem of existence of regions separating a given amount of volume with the least possible perimeter inside a Euclidean cone. Our main result shows that nonexistence for a given volume implies that the isoperimetric profile of the cone coincides with the one of the half-space. This allows us to give some criteria ensuring existence of isoperimetric regions: for instance, local convexity of the cone at some boundary point. We also characterize which are the stable regions in a convex cone, i.e., second order minima of perimeter under a volume constraint. From this it follows that …
Building on work of Mondino-Scharrer, we show that among closed, smoothly embedded surfaces in $\mathbb{R}^3$ of genus $g$ and given isoperimetric ratio $v$, there exists one with minimum bending energy $\mathcal{W}$. We do this by gluing $g+1$ small catenoidal bridges to the bigraph of a singular solution for the linearized Willmore equation $Δ(Δ+2)φ=0$ on the $(g+1)$-punctured sphere $\mathbb{S}^2$ to construct a comparison surface of genus $g$ with arbitrarily small isoperimetric ratio $v\in (0, 1)$ and $\mathcal{W} < 8π$.
In this paper we solve several reverse isoperimetric problems in the class of $λ$-convex bodies, i.e., convex bodies whose curvature at each point of their boundary is bounded below by some $λ> 0$. We give an affirmative answer in $\mathbb{R}^3$ to a conjecture due to Borisenko which states that the $λ$-convex lens, i.e., the intersection of two balls of radius $1/λ$, is the unique minimizer of volume among all $λ$-convex bodies of given surface area. Also, we prove a reverse inradius inequality: in model spaces of constant curvature and arbitrary dimension, we show that the $λ$-convex lens (p…
We show the existence of isoperimetric regions of sufficiently large volumes in general asymptotically hyperbolic three manifolds. Furthermore, we show that large coordinate spheres in compact perturbations of Schwarzschild-anti-deSitter are uniquely isoperimetric. This is relevant in the context of the asymptotically hyperbolic Penrose inequality. Our results require that the scalar curvature of the metric satisfies $R_{g}\geq -6$, and we construct an example of a compact perturbation of Schwarzschild-anti-deSitter without $R_{g}\geq -6$ so that large centered coordinate spheres are not isope…
We prove existence of isoperimetric regions for every volume in non-compact Riemannian $n$-manifolds $(M,g)$, $n\geq 2$, having Ricci curvature $Ric_g\geq (n-1) k_0 g$ and being locally asymptotic to the simply connected space form of constant sectional curvature $k_0$; moreover in case $k_0=0$ we show that the isoperimetric regions are indecomposable. We also discuss some physically and geometrically relevant examples. Finally, under assumptions on the scalar curvature we prove existence of isoperimetric regions of small volume.
We consider the problem of minimizing the relative perimeter under a volume constraint in an unbounded convex body $C\subset \mathbb{R}^{n+1}$, without assuming any further regularity on the boundary of $C$. Motivated by an example of an unbounded convex body with null isoperimetric profile, we introduce the concept of unbounded convex body with uniform geometry. We then provide a handy characterization of the uniform geometry property and, by exploiting the notion of asymptotic cylinder of $C$, we prove existence of isoperimetric regions in a generalized sense. By an approximation argument we…
We prove a comparison theorem for the isoperimetric profiles of simple closed curves evolving by the normalized curve shortening flow: If the isoperimetric profile of the region enclosed by the initial curve is greater than that of some `model' convex region with exactly four vertices and with reflection symmetry in both axes, then the inequality remains true for the isoperimetric profiles of the evolved regions. We apply this using the Angenent solution as the model region to deduce sharp time-dependent upper bounds on curvature for arbitrary embedded closed curves evolving by the normalized …
In this paper we provide new existence results for isoperimetric sets of large volume in Riemannian manifolds with nonnegative Ricci curvature and Euclidean volume growth. We find sufficient conditions for their existence in terms of the geometry at infinity of the manifold. As a byproduct we show that isoperimetric sets of big volume always exist on manifolds with nonnegative sectional curvature and Euclidean volume growth. Our method combines an asymptotic mass decomposition result for minimizing sequences, a sharp isoperimetric inequality on nonsmooth spaces, and the concavity property of t…
We consider a nilpotent Lie group with a bracket-generating distribution $\hhh$ and an asymmetric left-invariant norm $\|\cdot\|_K$ induced by a convex body $K\subseteq\hhh$ containing $0$ in its interior. In this paper we prove the existence of minimizers of the perimeter functional $P_K$ associated to $\|\cdot\|_K$ under a volume (Haar measure) constraint. Our result generalizes the one of Leonardi and Rigot for Carnot groups.
We completely characterize isoperimetric regions in R^n with density e^h, where h is convex, smooth, and radially symmetric. In particular, balls around the origin constitute isoperimetric regions of any given volume, proving the Log-Convex Density Conjecture due to Kenneth Brakke.
