The aim of this article is: (a) To establish the existence of the best isoperimetric constants for the $(H^1,BMO)$-normal conformal metrics $e^{2u}|dx|^2$ on $\mathbb R^n$, $n\ge 3$, i.e., the conformal metrics with the Q-curvature orientated conditions $$ (-Δ)^{n/2}u\in H^1(\mathbb R^n) & \ u(x)=\hbox{const.}+\frac{\int_{\mathbb R^n}(\log\frac{|\cdot|}{|x-\cdot|})(-Δ)^{n/2} u(\cdot) d\mathcal{H}^n(\cdot)}{2^{n-1}π^{n/2}Γ(n/2)}; $$ (b) To prove that $(nω_n^\frac1n)^\frac{n}{n-1}$ is the optimal upper bound of the best isoperimetric constants for the complete $(H^1,BMO)$-normal conformal metrics with nonnegative scalar curvature; (c) To find the optimal upper bound of the best isoperimetric constants via the quotients of two power integrals of Green's functions for the $n$-Laplacian operators $-\hbox{div}(|\nabla u|^{n-2}\nabla u)$.
The aim of this paper is to give not only an explicit upper bound of the total Q-curvature but also an induced isoperimetric deficit formula for the complete conformal metrics on $\mathbb R^n$, $n\ge 3$ with scalar curvature being nonnegative near infinity and Q-curvature being absolutely convergent.
Let $(M,g)$ be a smooth compact Riemannian manifold of dimension $n$ with smooth boundary $\partial M$. Suppose that $(M,g)$ admits a scalar-flat conformal metric. We prove that the supremum of the isoperimetric quotient over the scalar-flat conformal class is strictly larger than the best constant of the isoperimetric inequality in the Euclidean space, and consequently is achieved, if either (i) $n\ge 12$ and $\partial M$ has a nonumbilic point; or (ii) $n\ge 10$, $\partial M$ is umbilic and the Weyl tensor does not vanish at some boundary point.
Let $(M,g)$ be a smooth compact Riemannian manifold of dimension $n$ with smooth boundary $\partial M$, admitting a scalar-flat conformal metric. We prove that the supremum of the isoperimetric ratio over the scalar-flat conformal class is strictly larger than the best constant of the isoperimetric inequality in the Euclidean space, and consequently is achieved, if either (i) $9\le n\le 11$ and $\partial M$ has a nonumbilic point; or (ii) $7\le n\le 9$, $\partial M$ is umbilic and the Weyl tensor does not vanish identically on the boundary. This is a continuation of the work \cite{Jin-Xiong} b…
We prove an Hersch's type isoperimetric inequality for the third positive eigenvalue on $\mathbb S^2$. Our method builds on the theory we developped to construct extremal metrics on Riemannian surfaces in conformal classes for any eigenvalue.
A well known question in differential geometry is to control the constant in isoperimetric inequality by intrinsic curvature conditions. In dimension 2, the constant can be controlled by the integral of the positive part of the Gaussian curvature. In this paper, we showed that on simply connected conformal flat manifolds of higher dimensions, the role of the Gaussian curvature can be replaced by the Branson $Q$- curvature. We achieve this by exploring the relationship between $A_p$ weights and integrals of the Q-curvature.
We establish sufficient conditions for existence of curves minimizing length as measured with respect to a degenerate metric on the plane while enclosing a specified amount of Euclidean area. Non-existence of minimizers can occur and examples are provided. This continues the investigation begun in [ABCDS] where the metric ds^2 near the singularities equals a quadratic polynomial times the standard metric. Here we allow the conformal factor to be any smooth non-negative potential vanishing at isolated points provided the Hessian at these points is positive definite. These isoperimetric curves, …
We prove that the isoperimetric inequalities in the euclidean and hyperbolic plane hold for all euclidean, respectively hyperbolic, cone-metrics on a disk with singularities of negative curvature. This is a discrete analog of the theorems of Weil and Bol that deal with Riemannian metrics of curvature bounded from above by 0, respectively by -1. A stronger discrete version was proved by A.D.Alexandrov, with a subsequent extension by approximation to metrics of bounded integral curvature. Our proof uses "discrete conformal deformations" of the metric that eliminate the singularities and increase…
We study the existence of a metric with zero scalar curvature maximizing the isoperimetric ratio among all zero scalar curvature metrics in a fixed conformal class of metrics on a compact manifold with boundary. The question may be reduced to an extremal problem for the harmonic extension of functions and the related nonlinear integral equation is discussed.
Let N be a complete Riemannian manifold of dimension n+1 whose Riemannian metric g is conformally equivalent to a metric with non-negative Ricci curvature. The normalized Steklov eigenvalues of a bounded domain in N are bounded above in terms of the isoperimetric ratio of the domain. Consequently, the normalized Steklov eigenvalues of a bounded domain in Euclidean space, hyperbolic space or a standard hemisphere are uniformly bounded above. On a compact surface with boundary, the normalized Steklov eigenvalues are uniformly bounded above in terms of the genus. We also obtain a relationship bet…
We investigate both linear and nonlinear stability aspects of rigid motions (resp. Möbius transformations) of $\mathbb{S}^{n-1}$ among Sobolev maps from $\mathbb{S}^{n-1}$ into $\mathbb{R}^n$. Unlike similar in flavour results for maps defined on domains of $\mathbb{R}^n$ and mapping into $\mathbb{R}^n$, not only an isometric (resp. conformal) deficit is necessary in this more flexible setting, but also a deficit measuring the distortion of $\mathbb{S}^{n-1}$ under the maps in consideration. The latter is defined as an associated isoperimetric type of deficit. We mostly focus on the case $n=3$…
We study sequences of conformal deformations of a smooth closed Riemannian manifold of dimension $n$, assuming uniform volume bounds and $L^{n/2}$ bounds on their scalar curvatures. Singularities may appear in the limit. Nevertheless, we show that under such bounds the underlying metric spaces are pre-compact in the Gromov-Hausdorff topology. Our study is based on the use of $A_\infty$-weights from harmonic analysis, and provides geometric controls on the limit spaces thus obtained. Our techniques also show that any conformal deformation of the Euclidean metric on $R^n$ with infinite volume an…
We study the structure of the branch set of solutions to Plateau's problem in metric spaces satisfying a quadratic isoperimetric inequality. In our first result, we give examples of spaces with isoperimetric constant arbitrarily close to the Euclidean isoperimetric constant $(4π)^{-1}$ for which solutions have large branch set. This complements recent results of Lytchak--Wenger and Stadler stating, respectively, that any space with Euclidean isoperimetric constant is a CAT($0$) space and solutions to Plateau's problem in a CAT($0$) space have only isolated branch points. We also show that any …
The purpose of this paper is to exhibit a quantitative stability result for the class of Möbius transformations of $\mathbb{S}^{n-1}$ when $n\geq 3$. The main estimate is of local nature and asserts that for a Lipschitz map that is apriori close to a Möbius transformation, an average conformal-isoperimetric type of deficit controls the deviation (in an average sense) of the map in question from a particular Möbius map. The optimality of the result together with its link with the geometric rigidity of the special orthogonal group are also discussed.
On a compact stratified space (X, g) there exists a metric of constant scalar curvature in the conformal class of g, if the scalar curvature satisfies an integrability condition and if the Yamabe constant of X is strictly smaller than the local Yamabe constant , another conformal invariant introduced in the recent work of K. Akutagawa, G. Carron and R. Mazzeo. Such invariant depends on the local structure of X, in particular on the links, but its explicit value is not known. We are going to show that if the links satisfy a Ricci positive lower bound, then we can compute the local Yamabe consta…
