In this paper we prove that for a fixed neat principal congruence subgroup of a Bianchi group the order of the torsion part of its second cohomology group with coefficients in an integral lattice associated to the m-th symmetric power of the standard representation of SL_2(C) grows exponentially in m^2. We give upper and lower bounds for the growth rate. Our result extends a result of Mueller and Marshall, who proved the corresponding statement for closed arithmetic 3-manifolds, to the finite-volume case. We also prove a limit multiplicity formula for twisted combinatorial Reidemeister torsion on higher dimensional hyperbolic manifolds.
In this paper we prove that for suitable sequences of congruence subgroups of Bianchi groups, including the standard exhaustive sequences of a congruence subgroup, and even symmetric powers of the standard representation of Sl_2(C) the size of the torsion part in the first homology grows exponentially. This extends results of Bergeron and Venkatesh to a case of non-uniform lattices.
We describe torsion classes in the first cohomology group of $\text{SL}_2(\mathbb{Z})$. In particular, we obtain generalized Dickson's invariants for p-power polynomial rings. Secondly, we describe torsion classes in the zero-th homology group of $\text{SL}_2(\mathbb{Z})$ as a module over the torsion invariants. As application, we obtain various congruences between cuspidal forms of level one and Eisenstein series.
The principal aim of this paper is to construct torsion cohomology classes in the initial terms of a spectral sequence computing the cohomology of a Kottwitz-Harris-Taylor Shimura variety. Beside we produce some global congruences between automorphic representations.
We first give a relative flexible process to construct torsion cohomology classes for Shimura varieties of Kottwitz-Harris-Taylor type with coefficient in a non too regular local system. We then prove that associated to each torsion cohomology class, there exists a infinity of irreducible automorphic representations in characteristic zero, which are pairwise non isomorphic and weakly congruent.
We report on the computation of torsion in certain homology theories of congruence subgroups of SL(4,Z). Among these are the usual group cohomology, the Tate-Farrell cohomology, and the homology of the sharbly complex. All of these theories yield Hecke modules. We conjecture that the Hecke eigenclasses in these theories have attached Galois representations. The interpretation of our computations at the torsion primes 2,3,5 is explained. We provide evidence for our conjecture in the 15 cases of odd torsion that we found in levels up to 31.
Using Lefschetz numbers of certain involutions, we provide lower bounds for the cuspidal cohomology of principal congruence subgroups of Bianchi groups. The asymptotic lower bounds that follow from our results complement recent results of Calegari-Emerton, Marshall and Finis-Grunewald-Tirao. Moreover, we discuss the relationship between these involutions and the base change classes in the cohomology.
Starting from the results in math.DG:1212.3161 we prove that for a given Bianchi group, certain natural coefficent modules and a lot of sequences of congruence subgroups of the size of the torsion subgroup of the first homology grows exponentially with the index (we give an explicit rate). We also prove limit multiplicity results for the irreducible components of the space of cuspidal forms.
We describe a criterion for a real or complex hyperbolic lattice to admit a RFRS tower that consists entirely of congruence subgroups. We use this to show that certain Bianchi groups $\mathrm{PSL}(\mathcal{O}_d)$ are virtually fibered on congruence subgroups, and also exhibit the first examples of RFRS Kähler groups that are not a subgroup of a product of surface groups and abelian groups.
We introduce a method for producing congruences between Hecke eigenclasses, possibly torsion, in the coherent cohomology of automorphic vector bundles on certain good reduction Shimura varieties. The congruences are produced using some "generalized Hasse invariants" adapted to the Ekedahl-Oort stratification of the special fiber.
Extensive and systematic machine computations are carried out to investigate the integral cohomology of the Euclidean Bianchi groups and their congruence subgroups. The collected data give insight on several aspects, including the asymptotic behaviour of the torsion in the first homology. Along with the experimental work, some basic properties of the integral cohomology are recorded with an eye towards the liftibility issue of Hecke eigenvalue systems.
We discuss several arithmetic aspects of Bianchi groups, especially from a computational point of view. In particular, we consider computing the homology of Bianchi groups together with the Hecke action, connections with automorphic forms, abelian varieties, Galois representations and the torsion in the homology of Bianchi groups. Along the way, we list several open problems and conjectures, survey the related literature, presenting concrete examples and numerical data.
Let k be an imaginary quadratic number field, let F be a rational quaternion algebra and M an extension of F as a quaternion k-algebra. We are going to classify the F-orders which arise as an intersection of F with a maximal M-order; and we are going to prove that the discriminant of such an intersection determines uniquely the isomorphism type of the corresponding maximal M-order. Building on this, we are going to relate this intersection to the intersection of a second rational quaternion algebra F' in M with a second maximal M-order. This allows us to determine whether the Bianchi group ove…
Let M be an arithmetic hyperbolic 3-manifold, such as a Bianchi manifold. We conjecture that there is a basis for the second homology of M, where each basis element is represented by a surface of `low' genus, and give evidence for this. We explain the relationship between this conjecture and the study of torsion homology growth.
It has been shown that non-stabilizer eigenstates of permutation gates are appropriate for allowing $d$-dimensional universal quantum computing (uqc) based on minimal informationally complete POVMs. The relevant quantum gates may be built from subgroups of finite index of the modular group $Γ=PSL(2,\mathbb{Z})$ [M. Planat, Entropy 20, 16 (2018)] or more generally from subgroups of fundamental groups of $3$-manifolds [M. Planat, R. Aschheim, M.~M. Amaral and K. Irwin, arXiv 1802.04196(quant-ph)]. In this paper, previous work is encompassed by the use of torsion-free subgroups of Bianchi groups …
Let $Γ$ be a torsion-free arithmetic group acting on its associated global symmetric space $X$. Assume that $X$ is of non-compact type and let $Γ$ act on the geodesic boundary $\partial X$ of $X$. Via general constructions in KK-theory, we endow the K-groups of the arithmetic manifold $X/Γ$, of the reduced group C*-algebra of $Γ$ and of the boundary crossed product algebra associated to the action of $Γ$ on $\partial X$, with Hecke operators. The K-theory and K-homology groups of these C*-algebras are related by a Gysin six-term exact sequence. In the case when $Γ$ is a group of real hyperboli…
Let $D$ be an odd square-free positive integer and $C$ a divisor of $D$. For any quadratic character $χ$ modulo $C$, we prove that the $χ$-part of the group $J_0(DC)_\text{tor}$ of torsion points of $J_0(DC)$ coincides with the $χ$-part of its cuspidal subgroup, away from those primes of bad reduction or where possible congruences between oldforms and newforms occur.
We establish a correspondence between generalized quiver gauge theories in four dimensions and congruence subgroups of the modular group, hinging upon the trivalent graphs which arise in both. The gauge theories and the graphs are enumerated and their numbers are compared. The correspondence is particularly striking for genus zero torsion-free congruence subgroups as exemplified by those which arise in Moonshine. We analyze in detail the case of index 24, where modular elliptic K3 surfaces emerge: here, the elliptic j-invariants can be recast as dessins d'enfant which dictate the Seiberg-Witte…
The present article determines the indices of the principal congruence subgroups of the Bianchi groups $B_d$, $SL(2,\mathcal O)$ and elementary matrix group $E$ and extends Wohlfahrt's Theorem to $B_d$, $SL(2,\mathcal O)$ and $E$, where $\mathcal O$ is the ring of integers of some number fields.
We study general properties of the dessins d'enfants associated with the Hecke congruence subgroups $Γ_0(N)$ of the modular group $\mathrm{PSL}_2(\mathbb{R})$. The definition of the $Γ_0(N)$ as the stabilisers of couples of projective lattices in a two-dimensional vector space gives an interpretation of the quotient set $Γ_0(N)\backslash\mathrm{PSL}_2(\mathbb{R})$ as the projective lattices $N$-hyperdistant from a reference one, and hence as the projective line over the ring $\mathbb{Z}/N\mathbb{Z}$. The natural action of $\mathrm{PSL}_2(\mathbb{R})$ on the lattices defines a dessin d'enfant s…
In this paper we describe a connection between realizations of the action of the motivic Galois group on the motivic fundamental groups of Gaussian and Eisenstein elliptic curves punctured at the $\mathfrak{p}$-torsion points, $π_1^{\rm Mot}(E-E[\mathfrak{p}],v_0)$, and the geometry of the Bianchi hyperbolic threefolds $Γ_1(\mathfrak{p})\setminus\mathbb{H}^3$, where $Γ_1(\mathfrak{p})$ is a congruence subgroup of ${\rm GL}_2({\rm End}(E))$. The first instance of such a connection was found by A.Goncharov (arXiv:math/0510310). In particular, we study the Hodge realization of the image of the ab…
We introduce a new technique for the study of the distribution of modular symbols, which we apply to congruence subgroups of Bianchi groups. We prove that if $K$ is a quadratic imaginary number field of class number one and $\mathcal{O}_K$ its ring of integers, then for certain congruence subgroups of $\mathrm{PSL}_2(\mathcal{O}_K)$, the periods of a cusp form of weight two obey asymptotically a normal distribution. These results are specialisations from the more general setting of quotient surfaces of cofinite Kleinian groups, where our methods apply. We avoid the method of moments. Our new i…
In this work we prove the so-called "torsion congruences" between abelian $p$-adic $L$-functions that are related to automorphic representations of definite unitary groups. These congruences play a central role in the non-commutative Iwasawa theory as it became clear in the works of Kakde, Ritter and Weiss on the non-abelian Main Conjecture for the Tate motive. We tackle these congruences for a general definite unitary group of $n$ variables and we obtain more explicit results in the special cases of $n=1$ and $n=2$. In both of these cases we also explain their implications for some particular…
Let f be a newform of weight 2k-2 and level 1. In this paper we provide evidence for the Bloch-Kato conjecture for modular forms. We demonstrate an implication that under suitable hypothesis if a prime divides the algebraic part of L(k,f), then the prime divides the order of the Selmer group associated to f. We demonstrate this by establishing a congruence between the Saito-Kurokawa lift of f and a cuspidal Siegel eigenform that is not a Saito-Kurokawa lift. We then examine what this congruence says in terms of Galois representations to produce a non-trivial p-torsion element in the Selmer gro…
We prove new vanishing results on the growth of higher torsion homologies for suitable arithmetic lattices, Artin groups and mapping class groups. The growth is understood along Farber sequences, in particular, along residual chains. For principal congruence subgroups, we also obtain strong asymptotic bounds for the torsion growth. As a central tool, we introduce a quantitative homotopical method called effective rebuilding. This constructs small classifying spaces of finite index subgroups, at the same time controlling the complexity of the homotopy. The method easily applies to free abelian …
There are several formulas for the number of orbits of the projective line under the action of subgroups of $GL_2$. We give an interpretation of two such formulas in terms of the geometry of elliptic curves, and prove a more general formula for a large class of congruence subgroups of Bianchi groups. Our formula involves the number of walks on a certain graph called an isogeny volcano. Underlying our results is a complete description of the group of extensions of a pair of CM elliptic curves, and of a pair of lattices in a quadratic field.
We show that every sequence of torsion-free arithmetic congruence lattices in $\mathrm{PGL}(2,\mathbb R)$ or $\mathrm{PGL}(2,\mathbb C)$ satisfies a strong quantitative version of the Limit Multiplicity property. We deduce that for $R>0$ in certain range, growing linearly in the degree of the invariant trace field, the volume of the $R$-thin part of any congruence arithmetic hyperbolic surface or congruence arithmetic hyperbolic $3$-manifold $M$ is of order at most $\mathrm{Vol}(M)^{11/12}$. As an application we prove Gelander's conjecture on homotopy type of arithmetic hyperbolic $3$-manifold…
