We study the $\ell$-torsion subgroup in Jacobians of curves of the form $y^{\ell} = f(x)$ for irreducible $f(x)$ over a finite field $\mathbf{F}_{q}$ of characteristic $p \neq \ell$. This is a function field analogue of the study of $\ell$-torsion subgroups of ideal class groups of number fields $\mathbf{Q}(\sqrt[\ell]{N})$. We establish an upper bound, lower bound, and parity constraint on the rank of the $\ell$-torsion which depend only on the parameters $\ell$, $q$, and $\text{deg}\, f$. Using tools from class field theory, we show that additional criteria depending on congruence conditions involving the polynomial $f(x)$ can be used to refine the upper and lower bounds. For certain values of the parameters $\ell,q,\text{deg}\, f$, we determine the $\ell$-torsion of the Jacobian for all curves with the given parameters.
In this paper, we describe the construction of superelliptic curves with a rational point of prescribed order on their jacobians. The construction is based on Hensel's Lemma and produces for a given integer $N$ a superelliptic curve of genus linear in $N$ with a rational $N$-division point on the jacobian. The method is illustrated with multiple examples.
We study the variation of Selmer ranks of Jacobians of twists of hyperelliptic curves and superelliptic curves. We find sufficient conditions for such curves to have infinitely many twists whose Jacobians have Selmer ranks equal to $r$, for any given nonnegative integer $r$. This generalizes earlier results of Mazur-Rubin on elliptic curves.
We give a structure theorem for the $m$-torsion of the Jacobian of a general superelliptic curve $y^m=F(x)$. We study existence of torsion on curves of the form $y^q=x^p-x+a$ over finite fields of characteristic $p$. We apply those results to bound from below the Mordell-Weil ranks of Jacobians of certain superelliptic curves over $\mathbb Q$.
In this paper we study the Coleman-Oort conjecture for superelliptic curves, i.e., curves defined by affine equations $y^n=F(x)$ with $F$ a separable polynomial. We prove that up to isomorphism there are at most finitely many superelliptic curves of fixed genus $g\geq 8$ with CM Jacobians. The proof relies on the geometric structures of Shimura subvarieties in Siegel modular varieties and the stability properties of Higgs bundles associated to fibred surfaces.
Given a polynomial $f\in\mathbb{C}[x]$, we consider the family of superelliptic curves $y^d=f(x)$ and their Jacobians $J_d$ for varying integers $d$. We show that for any integer $g$ the number of abelian varieties up to isogeny of dimension $\le g$ which appear in any $J_d$ is finite and their multiplicities are bounded.
Let K be a field of characteristic zero, n>4 an integer, f(x) an irreducible polynomial over K of degree n, whose Galois group is doubly transitive simple non-abelian group. Let p be an odd prime, Z[ζ_p] the ring of integers in the p-th cyclotomic field, C_{f,p}:y^p=f(x) the corresponding superelliptic curve and J(C_{f,p}) its jacobian. Assuming that either n=p+1 or p does not divide n(n-1), we prove that the ring of all endomorphisms of J(C_{f,p}) coincides with Z[ζ_p].
This is (mostly) a survey article. We use an information about Galois properties of points of small order on an abelian variety in order to describe its endomorphism algebra over an algebraic closure of the ground field. We discuss in detail applications to jacobians of cyclic covers of the projective line.
In this paper, we present efficient algorithms for computing the number of points and the order of the Jacobian group of a superelliptic curve over finite fields of prime order p. Our method employs the Hasse-Weil bounds in conjunction with the Hasse-Witt matrix for superelliptic curves, whose entries we express in terms of multinomial coefficients. We present a fast algorithm for counting points on specific trinomial superelliptic curves and a slower, more general method for all superelliptic curves. For the first case, we reduce the problem of simplifying the entries of the Hasse-Witt matrix…
In this paper we study the semisimple part (commutator subgroup) of $ Hdg $. Assuming that $ p $ does not divide $ n $ and $ n-1 $ is not divisible by $ q $, the Galois group of $ f(x)$ over $ K $ is either the full symmetric group $ S_n $ or the alternating group $ A_n $, we prove that the semisimple part of $ Hdg$是“尽可能大”的中心.
We give a geometric interpretation of the group law for Jacobian varieties by extending the geometric construction of chords and tangents on an elliptic curve. For any given algebraic curve $\mathcal X$ and reduced divisors $D_1, D_2 \in \mbox{Jac } \mathcal X$, we define curves $\mathcal X^\prime$ and $\mathcal X^{"}$ such that the intersection $\mathcal X \cap \mathcal X^\prime$ determines precisely the divisor $-(D_1+D_2)$ and the intersection $\mathcal X\cap \mathcal X^{"}$ determines $D_1+D_2$. For superelliptic curves such formulas are made explicit.
Let $p$ be a prime, let $r$ and $q$ be powers of $p$, and let $a$ and $b$ be relatively prime integers not divisible by $p$. Let $C/\mathbb F_{r}(t)$ be the superelliptic curve with affine equation $y^b+x^a=t^q-t$. Let $J$ be the Jacobian of $C$. By work of Pries--Ulmer, $J$ satisfies the Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer conjecture (BSD). Generalizing work of Griffon--Ulmer, we compute the $L$-function of $J$ in terms of certain Gauss sums. In addition, we estimate several arithmetic invariants of $J$ appearing in BSD, including the rank of the Mordell--Weil group $J(\mathbb F_{r}(t))$, the Faltings …
Let $C$ be a curve of genus at least three defined over a number field, and let $r$ be the rank of the rational points of its Jacobian. Under mild hypotheses on $r$, recent results by Katz, Rabinoff, Zureick-Brown, and Stoll bound the number of rational points on $C$ by a constant that depends only on its genus. Yet one expects an even stronger bound that depends favorably on $r$: when $r$ is small, there should be fewer points on $C$. In a 2013 paper, Stoll established such a "rank-favorable" bound for hyperelliptic curves using Chabauty's method. In the present work we extend Stoll's results…
We consider the generalised Jacobian $J_{0}(N)_{\mathbf{m}}$ of the modular curve $X_{0}(N)$ of level $N$, with respect to the modulus $\mathbf{m}$ consisting of all cusps on the modular curve. When $N$ is odd, we determine the group structure of the rational torsion $J_{0}(N)_{\mathbf{m}}(\mathbb{Q})_{tor}$ up to $2$-primary and $l$-primary parts for any prime $l$ dividing $N$. Our results extend those of Wei--Yamazaki for squarefree levels and Yamazaki--Yang for prime-power levels.
Let $\ell$ be a rational prime and $k$ a number field. Given a superelliptic curve $C/k$ of $\ell$-power degree, we describe the field generated by the $\ell$-power torsion of the Jacobian variety in terms of the branch set and reduction type of $C$ (and hence, in terms of data determined by a suitable affine model of $C$). If the Jacobian is good away from $\ell$ and the branch set is defined over a pro-$\ell$ extension of $k(μ_{\ell^\infty})$ unramified away from $\ell$, then the $\ell$-power torsion of the Jacobian is rational over the maximal such extension. By decomposing the covering int…
Let $F$ be the maximal totally real subfield of $\mathbf{Q}(ζ_{32})$, the cyclotomic field of $32$nd roots of unity. Let $D$ be the quaternion algebra over $F$ ramified exactly at the unique prime above $2$ and 7 of the real places of $F$. Let $\mathcal{O}$ be a maximal order in $D$, and $X_0^D(1)$ the Shimura curve attached to $\mathcal{O}$. Let $C = X_0^D(1)/\langle w_D \rangle$, where $w_D$ is the unique Atkin-Lehner involution on $X_0^D(1)$. We show that the curve $C$ has several striking features. First, it is a hyperelliptic curve of genus $16$, whose hyperelliptic involution is exceptio…
A curve over a field of characteristic $p$ is called ordinary if the $p$-torsion of its Jacobian as large as possible, that is, an $\mathbb{F}_p$ vector space of dimension equal to its genus. In this paper we consider the following question: fix a finite field $\mathbb{F}_q$ and a family $\mathscr{F}$ of curves over $\mathbb{F}_q$. Then, what is the probability that a curve in this family is ordinary? We answer this question when $\mathscr{F}$ is either the Artin-Schreier family in any characteristic or a superelliptic family in characteristic 2.
We study the Selmer varieties of smooth projective curves of genus at least two defined over $\mathbb{Q}$ which geometrically dominate a curve with CM Jacobian. We extend a result of Coates and Kim to show that Kim's non-abelian Chabauty method applies to such a curve. By combining this with results of Bogomolov-Tschinkel and Poonen on unramified correspondences, we deduce that any cover of $\mathbf{P}^1$ with solvable Galois group, and in particular any superelliptic curve over $\mathbb{Q}$, has only finitely many rational points over $\mathbb{Q}$.
Given a genus two curve $X: y^2 = x^5 + a x^3 + b x^2 + c x + d$, we give an explicit parametrization of all other such curves $Y$ with a specified symplectic isomorphism on three-torsion of Jacobians $\mbox{Jac}(X)[3] \cong \mbox{Jac}(Y)[3]$. It is known that under certain conditions modularity of $X$ implies modularity of infinitely many of the $Y$, and we explain how our formulas render this transfer of modularity explicit. Our method centers on the invariant theory of the complex reflection group $C_3 \times \operatorname{Sp}_4(\mathbf{F}_3)$. We discuss other examples where complex reflec…
Let $F/E$ be a Galois extension of totally real number fields, with Galois group $\mathrm{Gal}(F/E)$. Let $\mathfrak{N}$ be an integral ideal which is $\mathrm{Gal}(F/E)$-invariant, and $k \ge 2$ an integer. In this note, we study the action of $\mathrm{Gal}(F/E)$ on the Hecke orbits of Hilbert newforms of level $\mathfrak{N}$ and weight $k$. We also discuss the geometric counterpart to this action, which is closely related to the notion of abelian varieties potentially of $\mathrm{GL}_2$-type. The two actions have some consequences in relation with Langlands Functoriality. We conclude with an…
We investigate a novel geometric Iwasawa theory for $\mathbf{Z}_p$-extensions of function fields over a perfect field $k$ of characteristic $p>0$ by replacing the usual study of $p$-torsion in class groups with the study of $p$-torsion class group schemes. That is, if $\cdots \to X_2 \to X_1 \to X_0$ is the tower of curves over $k$ associated to a $\mathbf{Z}_p$-extension of function fields totally ramified over a finite non-empty set of places, we investigate the growth of the $p$-torsion group scheme in the Jacobian of $X_n$ as $n\rightarrow \infty$. By Dieudonné theory, this amounts to stud…
We extend the explicit quadratic Chabauty methods developed in previous work by the first two authors to the case of non-hyperelliptic curves. This results in an algorithm to compute the rational points on a curve of genus $g \ge 2$ over the rationals whose Jacobian has Mordell-Weil rank $g$ and Picard number greater than one, and which satisfies some additional conditions. This algorithm is then applied to the modular curve $X_{s}(13)$, completing the classification of non-CM elliptic curves over $\mathbf{Q}$ with split Cartan level structure due to Bilu-Parent and Bilu-Parent-Rebolledo.
Let $k$ be a perfect field of characteristic $p$ and $Γ$ an infinite, first countable pro-$p$ group. We study the behavior of the $p$-primary part of the "motivic class group", i.e. the full $p$-divisible group of the Jacobian, in any $Γ$-tower of function fields over $k$ that is unramified outside a finite (possibly empty) set of places $Σ$, and totally ramified at every place of $Σ$. When $Σ=\emptyset$ and $Γ$ is a torsion free $p$-adic Lie group, we obtain asymptotic formulae which show that the $p$-torsion class group schemes grow in a remarkably regular manner. In the ramified setting $Σ\…
