We study the Selmer varieties of smooth projective curves of genus at least two defined over $\mathbb{Q}$ which geometrically dominate a curve with CM Jacobian. We extend a result of Coates and Kim to show that Kim's non-abelian Chabauty method applies to such a curve. By combining this with results of Bogomolov-Tschinkel and Poonen on unramified correspondences, we deduce that any cover of $\mathbf{P}^1$ with solvable Galois group, and in particular any superelliptic curve over $\mathbb{Q}$, has only finitely many rational points over $\mathbb{Q}$.
We complete the computation of all $\mathbb{Q}$-rational points on all the $64$ maximal Atkin-Lehner quotients $X_0(N)^*$ such that the quotient is hyperelliptic. To achieve this, we use a combination of various methods, namely the classical Chabauty--Coleman, elliptic curve Chabauty, quadratic Chabauty, and the bielliptic quadratic Chabauty method combined with the Mordell-Weil sieve. Additionally, for square-free levels $N$, we classify all $\mathbb{Q}$-rational points as cusps, CM points (including their CM field and $j$-invariants) and exceptional ones. We further indicate how to use this …
We provably compute the full set of rational points on 1403 Picard curves defined over $\mathbb{Q}$ with Jacobians of Mordell-Weil rank $1$ using the Chabauty-Coleman method. To carry out this computation, we extend Magma code of Balakrishnan and Tuitman for Coleman integration. The new code computes $p$-adic (Coleman) integrals on curves to points defined over number fields where the prime $p$ splits completely and implements effective Chabauty for curves whose Jacobians have infinite order points that are not the image of a rational point under the Abel-Jacobi map. We discuss several interes…
The Chabauty-Coleman method is a $p$-adic method for finding all rational points on curves of genus $g$ whose Jacobians have Mordell-Weil rank $r < g$. Recently, Edixhoven and Lido developed a geometric quadratic Chabauty method that was adapted by Spelier to cover the case of geometric linear Chabauty. We compare the geometric linear Chabauty method and the Chabauty-Coleman method and show that geometric linear Chabauty can outperform Chabauty-Coleman in certain cases. However, as Chabauty-Coleman remains more practical for general computations, we discuss how to strengthen Chabauty-Coleman t…
We describe how the quadratic Chabauty method may be applied to explicitly determine the set of rational points on modular curves of genus $g>1$ whose Jacobians have Mordell--Weil rank $g$. This extends our previous work on the split Cartan curve of level 13 and allows us to consider modular curves that may have few known rational points or nontrivial local height contributions at primes of bad reduction. We illustrate our algorithms with a number of examples where we determine the set of rational points on several modular curves of genus 2 and 3: this includes Atkin--Lehner quotients $X_0^+(N…
This article generalizes the geometric quadratic Chabauty method, initiated over $\mathbb{Q}$ by Edixhoven and Lido, to curves defined over arbitrary number fields. The main result is a conditional bound on the number of rational points on curves that satisfy an additional Chabauty type condition on the Mordell-Weil rank of the Jacobian. The method gives a more direct approach to the generalization by Dogra of the quadratic Chabauty method to arbitrary number fields.
The main point of the paper is to take the explicit motivic Chabauty-Kim method developed in papers of Dan-Cohen--Wewers and Dan-Cohen and the author and make it work for non-rational curves. In particular, we calculate the abstract form of an element of the Chabauty-Kim ideal for $\mathbb{Z}[1/\ell]$-points on a punctured elliptic curve, and lay some groundwork for certain kinds of higher genus curves. For this purpose, we develop an "explicit Tannakian Chabauty-Kim method" using $\mathbb{Q}_{p}$-Tannakian categories of Galois representations in place of $\mathbb{Q}$-linear motives. In future…
We compute rational points on genus $3$ odd degree hyperelliptic curves $C$ over $\mathbb{Q}$ that have Jacobians of Mordell-Weil rank $0$. The computation applies the Chabauty-Coleman method to find the zero set of a certain system of $p$-adic integrals, which is known to be finite and include the set of rational points $C(\mathbb{Q})$. We implemented an algorithm in Sage to carry out the Chabauty-Coleman method on a database of $5870$ curves.
We use the method of quadratic Chabauty on the quotients $X_0^+(N)$ of modular curves $X_0(N)$ by their Fricke involutions to provably compute all the rational points of these curves for prime levels $N$ of genus four, five, and six. We find that the only such curves with exceptional rational points are of levels $137$ and $311$. In particular there are no exceptional rational points on those curves of genus five and six. More precisely, we determine the rational points on the curves $X_0^+(N)$ for $N=137,173,199,251,311,157,181,227,263,163,197,211,223,269,271,359$.
We construct curves of each genus $g\geq 2$ for which Coleman's effective Chabauty bound is sharp and Coleman's theorem can be applied to determine rational points if the rank condition is satisfied. We give numerous examples of genus two and rank one curves for which Coleman's bound is sharp. Based on one of those curves, we construct an example of a curve of genus five whose rational points are determined using the descent method together with Coleman's theorem.

Results in $p$-adic transcendence theory are applied to two problems in the Chabauty-Coleman method. The first is a question of McCallum and Poonen regarding repeated roots of Coleman integrals. The second is to give lower bounds on the $p$-adic distance between rational points in terms of the heights of a set of Mordell-Weil generators of the Jacobian. We also explain how, in some cases, a conjecture on the 'Wieferich statistics' of Jacobians of curves implies a bound on the height of rational points of curves of small rank, in terms of the usual invariants of the curve and the height of Mord…
The Chabauty--Kim method is a tool for finding the integral or rational points on varieties over number fields via certain transcendental $p$-adic analytic functions arising from certain Selmer schemes associated to the unipotent fundamental group of the variety. In this paper we establish several foundational results on the Chabauty--Kim method for curves over number fields. The two main ingredients in the proof of these results are an unlikely intersection result for zeroes of iterated integrals, and a careful analysis of the intersection of the Selmer scheme of the original curve with the u…
We explore a number of problems related to the quadratic Chabauty method for determining integral points on hyperbolic curves. We remove the assumption of semistability in the description of the quadratic Chabauty sets $\mathcal{X}(\mathbb{Z}_p)_2$ containing the integral points $\mathcal{X}(\mathbb{Z})$ of an elliptic curve of rank at most $1$. Motivated by a conjecture of Kim, we then investigate theoretically and computationally the set-theoretic difference $\mathcal{X}(\mathbb{Z}_p)_2\setminus \mathcal{X}(\mathbb{Z})$. We also consider some algorithmic questions arising from Balakrishnan--…
Let $X$ be a quotient of the modular curve $X_0(N)$ whose Jacobian $J_X$ is a simple factor of $J_0(N)^{new}$ over $\mathbb{Q}$. Let $f$ be the newform of level $N$ and weight 2 associated with $J_X$; assume $f$ has analytic rank 1. We give analytic methods for determining the rational points of $X$ using quadratic Chabauty by computing two $p$-adic Gross-Zagier formulas for $f$. Quadratic Chabauty requires a supply of rational points on the curve or its Jacobian; this new method eliminates this requirement. To achieve this, we give an algorithm to compute the special value of the anticyclotom…
We generalize the explicit quadratic Chabauty techniques for integral points on odd degree hyperelliptic curves and for rational points on genus 2 bielliptic curves to arbitrary number fields using restriction of scalars. This is achieved by combining equations coming from Siksek's extension of classical Chabauty with equations defined in terms of p-adic heights attached to independent continuous idele class characters. We give several examples to show the practicality of our methods.
We compute the rational points on the Atkin-Lehner quotient $X^+_0(125)$ using the quadratic Chabauty method. Our work completes the study of exceptional rational points on the curves $X^+_0(N)$ of genus between 2 and 6. Together with the work of several authors, this completes the proof of a conjecture of Galbraith.
Building on work of Balakrishnan, Dogra, and of the first author, we provide some improvements to the explicit quadratic Chabauty method to compute rational points on genus $2$ bielliptic curves over $\mathbb{Q}$, whose Jacobians have Mordell-Weil rank equal to $2$. We complement this with a precision analysis to guarantee correct outputs. Together with the Mordell-Weil sieve, this bielliptic quadratic Chabauty method is then the main tool that we use to compute the rational points on the $411$ locally solvable curves from the LMFDB which satisfy the aforementioned conditions.
Building on work by Chabauty from 1941, Coleman proved in 1985 an explicit bound for the number of rational points of a curve $C$ of genus $g\ge 2$ defined over a number field $F$, with Jacobian of rank at most $g-1$. Namely, in the case $F=\mathbb{Q}$, if $p>2g$ is a prime of good reduction, then the number of rational points of $C$ is at most the number of $\mathbb{F}_p$-points plus a contribution coming from the canonical class of $C$. We prove a result analogous to Coleman's bound in the case of a hyperbolic surface $X$ over a number field, embedded in an abelian variety $A$ of rank at mos…
In this paper we prove the finiteness of the set of S-integral points of a punctured rational elliptic curve without complex multiplication using the Chabauty-Kim method. This extends previous results of Kim in the complex multiplication case. The key input of our approach is the use of modularity techniques to prove the vanishing of certain Selmer groups involved in the Chabauty-Kim method.
Given a genus $2$ curve $C$ with a rational Weierstrass point defined over a number field, we construct a family of genus $5$ curves that realize descent by maximal unramified abelian two-covers of $C$, and describe explicit models of the isogeny classes of their Jacobians as restrictions of scalars of elliptic curves. All the constructions of this paper are accompanied by explicit formulas and implemented in Magma and/or SageMath. We apply these algorithms in combination with elliptic Chabauty to a dataset of 7692 genus $2$ quintic curves over $\mathbb{Q}$ of Mordell-Weil rank $2$ or $3$ whos…
