Let $A$ and $B$ be commutative rings with unity, $f:A\to B$ a ring homomorphism and $J$ an ideal of $B$. Then the subring $A\bowtie^fJ:=\{(a,f(a)+j)|a\in A$ and $j\in J\}$ of $A\times B$ is called the amalgamation of $A$ with $B$ along with $J$ with respect to $f$. In this paper, among other things, we investigate the Cohen-Macaulay and (quasi-)Gorenstein properties on the ring $A\bowtie^fJ$.

In this paper, we study the property of Cohen-Macaulay in the sense of ideals which was introduced by Asgharzadeh and Tousi, a general notion of the usual Cohen-Macaulay property (in the Noetherian case), on the ring $A\bowtie^fJ$. Among other things, we obtain a generalization of the well-known result that when the Nagata's idealization…
We characterize Cohen-Macaulay and Gorenstein rings obtained from certain types of convex body semigroups. Algorithmic methods to check if a polygonal or circle semigroup is Cohen-Macaulay/Gorenstein are given. We also provide some families of Cohen-Macaulay and Gorenstein rings.
In this paper we show a partial answer the a question of C. Huneke and G. Leuschke (2003): Let R be a standard graded Cohen-Macaulay ring of graded countable Cohen-Macaulay representation type, and assume that R has an isolated singularity. Is R then necessarily of graded finite Cohen-Macaulay representation type? In particular, this question has an affirmative answer for standard graded non-Gorenstein rings as well as for standard graded Gorenstein rings of minimal multiplicity. Along the way, we obtain a partial classification of graded Cohen-Macaulay rings of graded countable Cohen-Macaulay…
In this paper, we study simplicial complexes whose Stanley-Reisner rings are almost Gorenstein and have $a$-invariant zero. We call such a simplicial complex an almost Gorenstein* simplicial complex. To study the almost Gorenstein* property, we introduce a new class of simplicial complexes which we call uniformly Cohen-Macaulay simplicial complexes. A $d$-dimensional simplicial complex $Δ$ is said to be uniformly Cohen-Macaulay if it is Cohen-Macaulay and, for any facet $F$ of $Δ$, the simplicial complex $Δ\setminus\{F\}$ is Cohen-Macaulay of dimension $d$. We investigate fundamental algebraic…
We provide algorithmic methods to check the Cohen--Macaulayness, Buchsbaumness and/or Gorensteiness of some families of semigroup rings that are constructed from the dilation of bounded convex polyhedrons of $\R^3_{\geq}$. Some families of semigroup rings are given satifying these properties.
This paper main goal is to measure the defect of Cohen-Macaulayness, Gorensteiness, complete intersection and regularity for the tensor product of algebras over a ring. For this sake, we determine the homological invariants which are inherent to these notions, such as the Krull dimension, depth, injective dimension, type and embedding dimension of the tensor product constructions in terms of those of their components.
Levelness and nearly Gorensteinness are well-studied properties of graded rings as a generalized notion of Gorensteinness. In this paper, we compare the strength of these properties. For any Cohen-Macaulay homogeneous affine semigroup ring R, we give a necessary condition for R to be non-Gorenstein and nearly Gorenstein in terms of the h-vector of R and we show that if R is nearly Gorenstein with Cohen-Macaulay type 2, then it is level. We also show that if Cohen-Macaulay type is more than 2, there are 2-dimensional counterexamples. Moreover, we characterize nearly Gorensteinness of Stanley-Re…
We study one-dimensional Cohen-Macaulay rings whose trace ideal of the canonical module is as small as possible. In this paper we call such rings far-flung Gorenstein rings. We investigate far-flung Gorenstein rings in relation with the endomorphism algebras of the maximal ideals and numerical semigroup rings. We show that the solution of the Rohrbach problem in additive number theory provides an upper bound for the multiplicity of far-flung Gorenstein numerical semigroup rings. Reflexive modules over far-flung Gorenstein rings are also studied.
We introduce new homological dimensions, namely the Cohen-Macaulay projective, injective and flat dimensions for homologically bounded complexes. Among other things we show that (a) these invariants characterize the Cohen-Macaulay property for local rings, (b) Cohen-Macaulay flat dimension fits between the Gorenstein flat dimension and the large restricted flat dimension, and (c) Cohen-Macaulay injective dimension fits between the Gorenstein injective dimension and the Chouinard invariant.
The Auslander-Reiten conjecture is a notorious open problem about the vanishing of Ext modules. In a Cohen-Macaulay complete local ring $R$ with a parameter ideal $Q$, the Auslander-Reiten conjecture holds for $R$ if and only if it holds for the residue ring $R/Q$. In the former part of this paper, we study the Auslander-Reiten conjecture for the ring $R/Q^\ell$ in connection with that for $R$, and prove the equivalence of them for the case where $R$ is Gorenstein and $\ell\le \dim R$. In the latter part, we generalize the result of the minimal multiplicity by J. Sally. Due to these two of our…
Over a noetherian ring, it is a classic result of Matlis that injective modules admit direct sum decompositions into injective hulls of quotients by prime ideals. We show that over a Cohen-Macaulay ring admitting a dualizing module, Gorenstein injective modules admit similar filtrations. We also investigate Tor-modules of Gorenstein injective modules over such rings. This extends work of Enochs and Huang over Gorenstein rings. Furthermore, we give examples showing the following: (1) the class of Gorenstein injective $R$-modules need not be closed under tensor products, even when $R$ is local a…
Let $ R $ be a Cohen-Macaulay local ring. We prove that the $ n $th syzygy module of a maximal Cohen-Macaulay $ R $-module cannot have a semidualizing direct summand for every $ n \ge 1 $. In particular, it follows that $ R $ is Gorenstein if and only if some syzygy of a canonical module of $ R $ has a non-zero free direct summand. We also give a number of necessary and sufficient conditions for a Cohen-Macaulay local ring of minimal multiplicity to be regular or Gorenstein. These criteria are based on vanishing of certain Exts or Tors involving syzygy modules of the residue field.
Let (R,m) be a commutative Noetherian local ring. It is known that R is Cohen-Macaulay if there exists either a nonzero finitely generated R-module of finite injective dimension or a nonzero Cohen-Macaulay R-module of finite projective dimension. In this paper, we investigate the Gorenstein analogues of these facts.
The paper answers a question by Jonathan Wahl, giving examples of regular surfaces S (so their canonical ring is a Gorenstein graded ring) having the following properties: 1) their canonical divisor K_S = rL is a positive multiple of an ample divisor L 2) the graded ring R := R (X,L ) associated to L is not Cohen-Macaulay. In the appendix Wahl shows how these examples lead to the existence of Cohen-Macaulay singularities with K_X Q -Cartier which are not Q -Gorenstein, since their index one cover is not Cohen- Macaulay.
In this paper, for the development of the study of almost Gorenstein graded rings, we discuss some relations between almost Gorensteinness of Cohen--Macaulay homogeneous rings and their $h$-vectors. Concretely, for a Cohen--Macaulay homogeneous ring $R$, we give a sufficient condition for $R$ to be almost Gorenstein in terms of the $h$-vector of $R$ and we also characterize almost Gorenstein homogeneous domains with small socle degrees in terms of the $h$-vector of $R$. Moreover, we also provide the examples of almost Gorenstein homogeneous domains arising from lattice polytopes.
Let $R$ be a Noetherian local ring and $I$ an $R$-ideal. It is well-known that if the associated graded ring $\gr_I(R)$ is Cohen-Macaulay (Gorenstein), then so is $R$, but the converse is not true in general. In this paper we investigate the Cohen-Macaulayness and Gorensteinness of the associated graded ring $\gr_I(R)$ under the hypothesis of the extended Rees algebra $R[It,t^{-1}]$ is quasi-Gorenstein or the associated graded ring $\gr_I(R)$ is a domain.
We define what it means for a Cohen-Macaulay ring to to be super-stretched and show that Cohen-Macaulay rings of graded countable Cohen-Macaulay type are super-stretched. We use this result to show that rings of graded countable Cohen-Macaulay type, and positive dimension, have possible h-vectors (1), (1,n), or (1,n,1). Further, one dimensional standard graded Gorenstein rings of graded countable type are shown to be hypersurfaces; this result is not known in higher dimensions. In the non-Gorenstein case, rings of graded countable Cohen-Macaulay type of dimension larger than 2 are shown to be …
T. Harima and J. Watanabe studied the Lefschetz properties of free extension Artinian algebras $C$ over a base $A$ with fibre $B$. The free extensions are deformations of the usual tensor product, when $C$ is also Gorenstein, so are $A$ and $B$, and it is natural to ask for the relation among the Macaulay dual generators for the algebras. Writing a dual generator $F$ for $C$ as a homogeneous "polynomial" in $T$ and the dual variables for $B$, and given the dual generator for $B$, we give sufficient conditions on $F$ that ensure that $C$ is a free extension of $A={\sf k}[t]/(t^n)$ with fiber $B…
We study Koszul homology over Gorenstein rings. If an ideal is strongly Cohen-Macaulay, the Koszul homology algebra satisfies Poincaré duality. We prove a version of this duality which holds for all ideals and allows us to give two criteria for an ideal to be strongly Cohen-Macaulay. The first can be compared to a result of Hartshorne and Ogus; the second is a generalization of a result of Herzog, Simis, and Vasconcelos using sliding depth.
The purpose of this paper is, as part of the stratification of Cohen-Macaulay rings, to investigate the question of when the fiber products are almost Gorenstein rings. We show that the fiber product $R \times_T S$ of Cohen-Macaulay local rings $R$, $S$ of the same dimension $d>0$ over a regular local ring $T$ with $\dim T=d-1$ is an almost Gorenstein ring if and only if so are $R$ and $S$. Besides, the other generalizations of Gorenstein properties are also explored.
Let $(A,\m)$ be a Gorenstein local ring of dimension $d \geq 1$. Let $\CMS(A)$ be the stable category of maximal \CM \ $A$-modules and let $\ICMS(A)$ denote the set of isomorphism classes in $\CMS(A)$. We define a function $ξ\colon \ICMS(A) \rt \ZZ$ which behaves well with respect to exact triangles in $\CMS(A)$. We then apply this to (Gorenstein) liason theory. We prove that if $\dim A \geq 2$ and $A$ is not regular then the even liason classes of $\m^n; n\geq 1$ is an infinite set. We also prove that if $A$ is an complete equi-characteristic simple singularity with $A/\m$ uncountable then fo…
Let $F^n(-)$ be the Frobenius functor of Peskine and Szpiro. In this note, we show that the maximal Cohen-Macaulayness of $F^n(M)$ forces $M$ to be free, provided $M$ has a rank. We apply this result to obtain several Frobenius related criteria for the Gorensteinness of a local ring $R$, one of which improves a previous characterization due to Hanes and Huneke. We also establish a special class of finite length modules over Cohen-Macaulay rings, which are rigid against Frobenius.
This is the second paper in a series of three papers. In the first paper of the series, "Artinian Gorenstein algebras with linear resolutions", (arXiv:1306.2523, J. of Algebra, to appear) we prove that it is possible to give the minimal resolution of the rings from the title in terms of the coefficients of the corresponding Macaulay inverse system. In this context, the word "give" means, "give in a polynomial manner". The first paper in the series proves, essentially, an existence theorem. The second and third papers in the series construct the explicit formulas for the resolution. The present…
In this paper, we introduce an invariant of Cohen-Macaulay local rings in terms of the reduction number of canonical ideals. The invariant can be defined in arbitrary Cohen-Macaulay rings and it measures how close to being Gorenstein. First, we clarify the relation between almost Gorenstein rings and nearly Gorenstein rings by using the invariant in dimension one. We next characterize the idealization of trace ideals over Gorenstein rings in terms of the invariant. It provides better prospects for a result of the almost Gorenstein property of idealization.
The main invariant to study the combinatorics of a simplicial complex $K$ is the associated face ring or Stanley-Reisner algebra. Reisner respectively Stanley explained in which sense Cohen-Macaulay and Gorenstein properties of the face ring are reflected by geometric and/or combinatoric properties of the simplicial complex. We give a new proof for these result by homotopy theoretic methods and constructions. Our approach is based on ideas used very successfully in the analysis of the homotopy theory of classifying spaces.
Starting with a commutative ring $R$ and an ideal $I$, it is possible to define a family of rings $R(I)_{a,b}$, with $a,b \in R$, as quotients of the Rees algebra $\oplus_{n \geq 0} I^nt^n$; among the rings appearing in this family we find Nagata's idealization and amalgamated duplication. Many properties of these rings depend only on $R$ and $I$ and not on $a,b$; in this paper we show that the Gorenstein and the almost Gorenstein properties are independent of $a,b$. More precisely, we characterize when the rings in the family are Gorenstein, complete intersection, or almost Gorenstein and we …
Given a semidualizing module $C$ over a commutative noetherian ring, Holm and Jørgensen investigate some connections between $C$-Gorenstein dimensions of an $R$-complex and Gorenstein dimensions of the same complex viewed as a complex over the "trivial extension" $R \ltimes C$. We generalize some of their results to a certain type of retract diagram. We also investigate some examples of such retract diagrams, namely D'Anna and Fontana's amalgamated duplication and Enescu's pseudocanonical cover.
In this paper we study the isomorphism classes of Artinian Gorenstein local rings with socle degree three by means of Macaulay's inverse system. We prove that their classification is equivalent to the projective classification of the hypersurfaces of $\mathbb P ^{n }$ of degree three. This is an unexpected result because it reduces the study of this class of local rings to the homogeneous case. The result has applications in problems concerning the punctual Hilbert scheme $Hilb_d (\mathbb P^n)$ and in relation to the problem of the rationality of the Poincaré series of local rings.
We prove that the Cohen-Macaulay type of an almost Gorenstein monomial curve $\mathcal C \subseteq \mathbb{A}^4$ is at most $3$, and make some considerations on the general case.
In this note, we study commutative Noetherian local rings having finitely generated modules of finite Gorenstein injective dimension. In particular, we consider whether such rings are Cohen-Macaulay.
Using the theory of cohomology annihilators, we define a family of topologies on the set of isomorphism classes of maximal Cohen-Macaulay modules over a Gorenstein ring. We study compactness of these topologies.
The purpose of this article is to provide a new characterization of Cohen-Macaulay local rings. As a consequence we deduce that a local (Noetherian) ring $R$ is Gorenstein if and only if every parameter ideal of $R$ is irreducible.
The so-called 'change-of-ring' results are well-known expressions which present several connections between projective, injective and flat dimensions over the various base rings. In this note we extend these results to the Gorenstein dimensions over Cohen-Macaulay local rings.
We show that $F$-purity deforms in local $\mathbb{Q}$-Gorenstein rings of prime characteristic $p>0$. Furthermore, we show that $F$-purity is $\mathfrak{m}$-adically stable in local Cohen-Macaulay $\mathbb{Q}$-Gorenstein rings.
It is shown that a module is sequentially Cohen-Macaulay if and only if the index of reducibility for distinguished parameter ideals are eventually constant with special value. As corollaries to the main theorem we given to characterize the Gorensteinness, Cohen-Macaulayness of local rings in term of eventually index of reducibility for distinguished parameter ideals.
Let $(R,\fm)$ be a commutative Noetherian local ring and let $M$ be an $R$-module which is a relative Cohen-Macaulay with respect to a proper ideal $\fa$ of $R$ and set $n:=\h_{M}\fa$. We prove that $\ind M<\infty$ if and only if $\ind\H^{n}_\fa(M)<\infty$ and that $\ind\H^{n}_\fa(M)=\ind M-n$. We also prove that if $R$ has a dualizing complex and $\Gid_{R} M<\infty$, then $\Gid_{R}\H^{n}_\fa(M)<\infty$ and $\Gid_{R}\H^{n}_\fa(M)=\Gid_{R} M-n$. Moreover if $R$ and $M$ are Cohen-Macaulay, then it is proved that $\Gid_{R} M<\infty$ whenever $\Gid_{R}\H^{n}_\fa(M)<\infty$. Next, for a finitely ge…
Let $(A,\mathfrak{m})$ be a Gorenstein local ring and let $CMS(A)$ be its stable category of maximal CM $A$-modules. Suppose $CMS(A) \cong CMS(B)$ as triangulated categories. Then we show (1) If $A$ is a complete intersection of codimension $c$ then so is $B$. (2) If $A, B$ are Henselian and not hypersurfaces then $\dim A = \dim B$. (3) If $A, B$ are Henselian and $A$ is an isolated singularity then so is $B$. We also give some applications of our results. It should be remarked that if $R,S$ are complete CM but not necessarily Gorenstein and if there is an triangle isomorphism between the sing…
The non-Gorenstein locus of stable set rings of finite simple perfect graphs is studied. We describe combinatorially those perfect graphs whose stable set rings are Gorenstein on the punctured spectrum. In addition, we show that, in general, for Cohen--Macaulay graded algebras, their Cohen--Macaulay type and residue are largely independent.
Macaulay's Inverse System gives an effective method to construct Artinian Gorenstein k-algebras. To date a general structure for Gorenstein k-algebras of any dimension (and codimension) is not understood. In this paper we extend Macaulay's correspondence characterizing the submodules of the divided power ring in one-to-one correspondence with Gorenstein d-dimensional k-algebras. We discuss effective methods for constructing Gorenstein graded rings. Several examples illustrating our results are given.
Let $(R, \mathfrak{m}) $ be a Gorenstein local ring of dimension $d > 0$ and let $I$ be an ideal of $R$ such that $(0) \ne I \subsetneq R$ and $R/I$ is a Cohen-Macaulay ring of dimension $d$. There is given a complete answer to the question of when the idealization $A = R \ltimes I$ of $I$ over $R$ is an almost Gorenstein local ring.
The structure of the complex $\operatorname{\mathbf{R}Hom}_R(R/I,R)$ is explored for an Ulrich ideal $I$ in a Cohen-Macaulay local ring $R$. As a consequence, it is proved that in a one-dimensional almost Gorenstein but non-Gorenstein local ring, the only possible Ulrich ideal is the maximal ideal. It is also studied when Ulrich ideals have the same minimal number of generators.
