The so-called 'change-of-ring' results are well-known expressions which present several connections between projective, injective and flat dimensions over the various base rings. In this note we extend these results to the Gorenstein dimensions over Cohen-Macaulay local rings.
Motivated by their impact on homological algebra, the change of rings results have been the subject of several interesting works in Gorenstein homological algebra over Noetherian rings. In this paper, we investigate the change of rings theorems for the Gorenstein dimensions over arbitrary rings. Namely, by the use of the notion of strongly Gorenstein modules, we extend the well-known first, second, and third change of rings theorems for the classical projective and injective dimensions to the Gorenstein projective and injective dimensions, respectively. Each of the results established, in this…
Let $R$ be a local ring of positive characteristic and $X$ a complex with nonzero finitely generated homology and finite injective dimension. We prove that if derived base change of $X$ via the Frobenius (or more generally, via a contracting) endomorphism has finite injective dimension then $R$ is Gorenstein.
For a commutative ring R and a faithfully flat R-algebra S we prove, under mild extra assumptions, that an R-module M is Gorenstein flat if and only if the left S-module S\otimes M is Gorenstein flat, and that an R-module N is Gorenstein injective if and only if it is cotorsion and the left S-module Hom(S,N) is Gorenstein injective. We apply these results to the study of Gorenstein homological dimensions of unbounded complexes. In particular, we prove two theorems on stability of these dimensions under faithfully flat (co-)base change.
The main aim of this paper is to investigate rings over which all (finitely generated strongly) Gorenstein projective modules are projective. We consider this propriety under change of rings, and give various examples of rings with and without this propriety.
This paper generalize the idea of the authors in J. Pure Appl. Algebra 210 (2007) 437--445. Namely, we define and study a particular case of Gorenstein projective modules. We investigate some change of rings results for this new kind of modules. Examples over not necessarily Noetherian rings are given.
The paper describes a duality phenomenon for cohomology theories with the character of Gorenstein rings. For a connective cohomology theory with the p-local integers in degree 0, and coefficient ring R_* Gorenstein of shift 0, this states that for X with R_*(X) torsion, we have R^*(X)=Σ^a Hom( R_*(X), Z/p^{\infty}). A corresponding statement for modules over a commutative Gorenstein ring spectrum is also proved. [Minor typographical and bibliographic changes to the last version.]
In this paper, the principal tool to describe transversal polymatroids with Gorenstein base ring is polyhedral geometry, especially the $Danilov-Stanley$ theorem for the characterization of canonical module. Also, we compute the $a-invariant$ and the Hilbert series of base ring associated to this class of transversal polymatroids.
Let R be a homomorphic image of a Gorenstein local ring. Recent work has shown that there is a bridge between Auslander categories and modules of finite Gorenstein homological dimensions over R. We use Gorenstein dimensions to prove new results about Auslander categories and vice versa. For example, we establish base change relations between the Auslander categories of the source and target rings in a homomorphism R -> S of finite flat dimension.
There is given a characterization for the Rees algebras of parameters in a Gorenstein local ring to be almost Gorenstein graded rings. A characterization is also given for the Rees algebras of socle ideals of parameters. The latter one shows almost Gorenstein Rees algebras rather rarely exist for socle ideals, if the dimension of the base local ring is greater than two.
Over an arbitrary commutative ring, correspondences among three sets, the set of trace ideals, the set of stable ideals, and the set of birational extensions of the base ring, are studied. The correspondences are well-behaved, if the base ring is a Gorenstein ring of dimension one. It is shown that with one extremal exception, the surjectivity of one of the correspondences characterizes the Gorenstein property of the base ring, provided it is a Cohen-Macaulay local ring of dimension one. Over a commutative Noetherian ring, a characterization of modules in which every submodule is a trace modul…
Let $ R $ be a Cohen-Macaulay local ring. We prove that the $ n $th syzygy module of a maximal Cohen-Macaulay $ R $-module cannot have a semidualizing direct summand for every $ n \ge 1 $. In particular, it follows that $ R $ is Gorenstein if and only if some syzygy of a canonical module of $ R $ has a non-zero free direct summand. We also give a number of necessary and sufficient conditions for a Cohen-Macaulay local ring of minimal multiplicity to be regular or Gorenstein. These criteria are based on vanishing of certain Exts or Tors involving syzygy modules of the residue field.
Quasi-socle ideals, that is the ideals $I$ of the form $I= Q : \mathfrak{m}^q$ in Gorenstein numerical semigroup rings over fields are explored, where $Q$ is a parameter ideal, and $\mathfrak{m}$ is the maximal ideal in the base local ring, and $q \geq 1$ is an integer. The problems of when $I$ is integral over $Q$ and of when the associated graded ring $\mathrm{G}(I) = \bigoplus_{n \geq 0}I^n/I^{n+1}$ of $I$ is Cohen-Macaulay are studied. The problems are rather wild; examples are given.
In this paper we study orders over Cohen-Macaulay rings. We discuss desirable properties for these orders if they are to represent NCCRs of the base rings. While some definitions have been made, we discuss an alternate definition and the non-existence of examples. We then give necessary and sufficient conditions for an order to have certain desirable homological properties. We examine examples of rings satisfying these properties to prove that certain endormorphism rings over abelian quotient singularities have infinite global dimension.
In this paper, we study the relative homological dimension based on the class of projectively coresolved Gorenstein flat modules (PGF-modules), that were introduced by Saroch and Stovicek. The resulting PGF-dimension of modules has several properties in common with the Gorenstein projective dimension, the relative homological theory based on the class of Gorenstein projective modules. In particular, there is a hereditary Hovey triple in the category of modules of finite PGF-dimension, whose associated homotopy category is triangulated equivalent to the stable category of PGF-modules. Studying …
This paper is based on a talk given by the author in October, 1997 at a conference at Columbia University in celebration of Hyman Bass's 65th birthday. The paper details some of the history of Gorenstein rings and their uses.
It was proved by Beligiannis and Krause that over certain Artin algebras, there are Gorenstein flat modules which are not direct limits of finitely generated Gorenstein projective modules. That is, these algebras have no Gorenstein analogue of the Govorov-Lazard Theorem. We show that, in fact, there is a large class of rings without such an analogue. Namely, let R be a commutative local noetherian ring. Then the analogue fails for R if it has a dualizing complex, is henselian, not Gorenstein, and has a finitely generated Gorenstein projective module which is not free. The proof is based on a t…
T. Harima and J. Watanabe studied the Lefschetz properties of free extension Artinian algebras $C$ over a base $A$ with fibre $B$. The free extensions are deformations of the usual tensor product, when $C$ is also Gorenstein, so are $A$ and $B$, and it is natural to ask for the relation among the Macaulay dual generators for the algebras. Writing a dual generator $F$ for $C$ as a homogeneous "polynomial" in $T$ and the dual variables for $B$, and given the dual generator for $B$, we give sufficient conditions on $F$ that ensure that $C$ is a free extension of $A={\sf k}[t]/(t^n)$ with fiber $B…
The main invariant to study the combinatorics of a simplicial complex $K$ is the associated face ring or Stanley-Reisner algebra. Reisner respectively Stanley explained in which sense Cohen-Macaulay and Gorenstein properties of the face ring are reflected by geometric and/or combinatoric properties of the simplicial complex. We give a new proof for these result by homotopy theoretic methods and constructions. Our approach is based on ideas used very successfully in the analysis of the homotopy theory of classifying spaces.
Let $R$ be a ring with identity and $\C(R)$ denote the category of complexes of $R$-modules. In this paper we study the homotopy categories arising from projective (resp. injective) complexes as well as Gorenstein projective (resp. Gorenstein injective) modules. We show that the homotopy category of projective complexes over $R$, denoted $\KPC$, is always well generated and is compactly generated provided $\KPR$ is so. Based on this result, it will be proved that the class of Gorenstein projective complexes is precovering, whenever $R$ is a commutative noetherian ring of finite Krull dimension…
In this paper we describe the facets cone associated to transversal polymatroid presented by $\mathcal{A} = \{\{1,2\},\{2,3\},...,\{n-1,n\},\{n,1\}\}.$ Using the Danilov-Stanley theorem to characterize the canonicale module, we deduce that the base ring associated to this polymatroid is Gorenstein ring. Also, starting from this polymatroid we describe the transversal polymatroids with Gorenstein base ring in dimension 3 and with the help $\it Normaliz$ in dimension 4.
The study of the $h$-vectors of graded Gorenstein algebras is an important topic in combinatorial commutative algebra, which despite the large amount of literature produced during the last several years, still presents many interesting open questions. In this note, we commence a study of those unimodal Gorenstein $h$-vectors that do \emph{not} satisfy the Stanley-Iarrobino property. Our main results, which are characteristic free, show that such $h$-vectors exist: 1) In socle degree $e$ if and only if $e\ge 6$; and 2) In every codimension five or greater. The main case that remains open is tha…
The Cayley-Bacharach property, which has been classically stated as a property of a finite set of points in an affine or projective space, is extended to arbitrary 0-dimensional affine algebras over arbitrary base fields. We present characterizations and explicit algorithms for checking the Cayley-Bacharach property directly, via the canonical module, and in combination with the property of being a locally Gorenstein ring. Moreover, we characterize strict Gorenstein rings by the Cayley-Bacharach property and the symmetry of their affine Hilbert function, as well as by the strict Cayley-Bachara…
Let $K$ be a Gorenstein noetherian ring of finite Krull dimension, and consider the category of cohomologically noetherian commutative differential graded rings $A$ over $K$, such that $H^0(A)$ is essentially of finite type over $K$, and $A$ has finite flat dimension over $K$. We extend Grothendieck's twisted inverse image pseudofunctor to this category by generalizing the theory of rigid dualizing complexes to this setup. We prove functoriality results with respect to cohomologically finite and cohomologically essentially smooth maps, and prove a perfect base change result for $f^{!}$ in this…
The discrete polymatroids and their base rings are studied recently in many papers (see \cite{HH}, \cite{HHV}, \cite{V1}, \cite{V2}). It is important to give conditions when the base ring associated to a transversal polymatroid is Gorenstein (see \cite{HH}). In \cite{SA} we introduced a class of such base rings. In this paper we note that an intersection of such base rings (introduced in \cite{SA}) is Gorenstein and give necessary and sufficient conditions for the intersection of two base rings from \cite{SA} to be still a base ring of a transversal polymatroid. Also, we compute the $a$-invari…
The connection between a univariate polynomial having locally principal content and the content function acting like a homomorphism (the so-called Gaussian property) has been explored by many authors. In this work, we extend several such results to the contexts of multivariate polynomials, power series over a Noetherian ring, and base change of affine $K$-algebras by separable algebraically closed field extensions. We do so by using the framework of the Ohm-Rush content function. The correspondence is particularly strong in cases where the base ring is approximately Gorenstein or the element o…
Contravariantly finite resolving subcategories of the category of finitely generated modules have been playing an important role in the representation theory of algebras. In this paper we study contravariantly finite resolving subcategories over commutative rings. The main purpose of this paper is to classify contravariantly finite resolving subcategories over a henselian Gorenstein local ring; in fact there exist only three ones. Our method to obtain this classification also recovers as a by-product the theorem of Christensen, Piepmeyer, Striuli and Takahashi concerning the relationship betwe…
We define the dual F-signature of modules, which is equivalent to the F-signature if the module is the base ring. By using this invariant, We give characterizations of regular, F-regular, F-rational, and Gorenstein singularities.
Let $X$ be an $n\times m$ matrix of indeterminates over a field $K$ (of sufficiently large characteristic) and $M_t$ the set of $m$-minors of $X$. We consider two objects: (1) the Ress algebra of the polynomial ring $K[X]$ with respect to the ideal $I_t$ generated by $M_t$, and (2) the $A_t$ subalgebra of $K[X]$ generated by $M_t$. Note that $A_t$ is tHE coordinate ring of a Grassmannian if $t=\min(m,n)$; also the cases $t=1$ and $t=m-1=n-1$ are easily understood, since $A_t$ is a polynomial ring over $K$ in these cases. For both objects we compute the divisor class group and the canonical cla…
New homotopy invariant finiteness conditions on modules over commutative rings are introduced, and their properties are studied systematically. A number of finiteness results for classical homological invariants like flat dimension, injective dimension, and Gorenstein dimension, are established. It is proved that these specialize to give results concerning modules over complete intersection local rings. A noteworthy feature is the use of techniques based on thick subcategories of derived categories.
Let $ R $ be a $ d $-dimensional Cohen-Macaulay (CM) local ring of minimal multiplicity. Set $ S := R/({\bf f}) $, where $ {\bf f} := f_1,\ldots,f_c $ is an $ R $-regular sequence. Suppose $ M $ and $ N $ are maximal CM $ S $-modules. It is shown that if $ \mathrm{Ext}_S^i(M,N) = 0 $ for some $ (d+c+1) $ consecutive values of $ i \geqslant 2 $, then $ \mathrm{Ext}_S^i(M,N) = 0 $ for all $ i \geqslant 1 $. Moreover, if this holds true, then either $ \mathrm{projdim}_R(M) $ or $ \mathrm{injdim}_R(N) $ is finite. In addition, a counterpart of this result for Tor-modules is provided. Furthermore, …
