New homotopy invariant finiteness conditions on modules over commutative rings are introduced, and their properties are studied systematically. A number of finiteness results for classical homological invariants like flat dimension, injective dimension, and Gorenstein dimension, are established. It is proved that these specialize to give results concerning modules over complete intersection local rings. A noteworthy feature is the use of techniques based on thick subcategories of derived categories.
We study the behaviour of the finiteness of the set of associated primes of local cohomology modules, more generally of Lyubeznik functors, under various ring extensions. At first, we review the results for flat and faithfully flat extensions and we present new applications of them. Then, we focus how the finiteness property of the set of associated primes of local cohomology modules and Lyubeznik functors is transferred from extended ring to the base ring of pure and cyclically pure ring extensions. We show that finiteness property can be transferred from a ring to its pure local subring and …
Local cohomology modules, even over a Noetherian ring $R$, are typically unwieldly. As such, it is of interest whether or not they have finitely many associated primes. We prove the affirmative in the case where $R$ is a Stanley-Reisner ring over a field, whose associated simplicial complex is a $T$-space.
Let $(R, \frak m)$ denote a local Cohen-Macaulay ring and $I$ a non-nilpotent ideal of $R$. The purpose of this article is to investigate Faltings' finiteness dimension $f_I(R)$ and equidimensionalness of certain homomorphic image of $R$. As a consequence we deduce that $f_I(R)={\rm max}\{1, {\rm ht}\ I\}$ and if ${\frak m}\mathrm{Ass}_R(R/I)$ is cotained in Ass$_R(R)$, then the ring $R/ I+\cup_{n\geq 1}(0:_RI^n)$ is equidimensional of dimension $\dim R-1$. Moreover, we will obtain a lower bound for injective dimension of the local cohomology module $H^{{\rm ht}\ I}_I(R)$, in the case $(R, \fr…
In this paper, we show that for an $F$-pure local ring $(R,\m)$, all local cohomology modules $H_{\m}^i(R)$ have finitely many Frobenius compatible submodules. This answers positively an open question raised by F.Enescu and M.Hochster. We also prove that if $(R,\m)$ is excellent and is $F$-pure on the punctured spectrum, then all local cohomology modules have finite length in the category of $R$-modules with Frobenius action. Finally, we show that the property that all $H_{\m}^(R)$ have finitely many Frobenius compatible submodules passes to localizations.
We search for some splitting (resp. finiteness) criteria of a given module $M$ over a local ring $(R,\fm,k)$ in terms of the splitting (resp. finiteness) property of certain cohomological functors evaluated at $M$. In particular, we deal with the cohomological splitting question posted by Vasconcelos. We present a connection from our approach to the realization problem of Nunke. This is equipped with several applications. For instance, we recover some results of Jensen (and others) by applying simple methods. Additional applications, including a computation of the projective dimension of some …
We give a definition of a class of Dedekind domains which includes the rings of integers of global fields and give a proof that all rings in this class have finite ideal class group. We also prove that this class coincides with the class of rings of integers of global fields.
Let $\frak a$ denote an ideal in a regular local (Noetherian) ring $R$ and let $N$ be a finitely generated $R$-module with support in $V(\frak a)$. The purpose of this paper is to show that all homomorphic images of the $R$-modules $\Ext^j_R(N, H^i_{\frak a}(R))$ have only finitely many associated primes, for all $i, j\geq 0$, whenever $\dim R \leq4$ or $\dim R/ \frak a \leq 3$ and $R$ contains a field. In addition, we show that if $\dim R=5$ and $R$ contains a field, then the $R$-modules $\Ext^j_R(N, H^i_{\frak a}(R))$ have only finitely many associated primes, for all $i, j\geq 0$.
Let $R$ be a commutative $F$-algebra, where $F$ is a field of characteristic 0, satisfying the following conditions: $R$ is equidimensional of dimension $n$, every residual field with respect to a maximal ideal is an algebraic extension of $F,$ and $\Der_F (R)$ is a finitely generated projective $R$-module of rank $n$ such that $R_m\otimes_R \Der_F (R)=\Der_F(R_m)$. We show that the associated graded ring of the ring of differentiable operators, $D(R,F)$, is a commutative Noetherian regular with unity and pure graded dimension equal to $2\dim(R)$. Moreover, we prove that $D(R,F)$ has weak glob…
Let $R$ denote a commutative Noetherian (not necessarily local) ring, $\frak a$ an ideal of $R$ and $M$ a finitely generated $R$-module. The purpose of this paper is to show that $f^n_{\frak a}(M)=\inf \{0\leq i\in\mathbb{Z}|\, \dim H^{i}_{\frak a}(M)/N \geq n\, \, \text{for any finitely generated submodule}\,\, N \subseteq H^{i}_{\frak a}(M)\}$, where $n$ is a non-negative integer and the invariant $f^n_{\frak a}(M):=\inf\{f_{\frak a R_{\frak p}}(M_{\frak p})\,\,|\,\,{\frak p}\in \Supp M/\frak a M\,\,{\rm and}\,\,\dim R/{\frak p}\geq n\}$ is the $n$-th finiteness dimension of $M$ relative to …
Let S be a commutative ring with topologically noetherian spectrum and let R be the absolutely flat approximation of S. We prove that subsets of the spectrum of R parametrise the localising subcategories of D(R). Moreover, we prove the telescope conjecture holds for D(R). We also consider unbounded derived categories of absolutely flat rings which are not semi-artinian and exhibit an example of a cohomological Bousfield class that is not a Bousfield class.
In this paper we present a condition on a local Cohen-Macaulay F-injective ring of positive characteristic $p > 2$ which implies that its top local cohomology module with support in the maximal ideal has finitely many Frobenius compatible submodules.
Let $R$ be a commutative Noetherian ring, $\mathfrak a$ and $\mathfrak b$ ideals of $R$. In this paper, we study the finiteness dimension $f_{\mathfrak a}(M)$ of $M$ relative to $\mathfrak a$ and the $\mathfrak b$-minimum $\mathfrak a$-adjusted depth $λ_{\mathfrak a}^{\mathfrak b}(M)$ of $M$, where the underlying module $M$ is relative Cohen-Macaulay w.r.t $\mathfrak a$. Some applications of such modules are given.
We study chains of lattice ideals that are invariant under a symmetric group action. In our setting, the ambient rings for these ideals are polynomial rings which are increasing in (Krull) dimension. Thus, these chains will fail to stabilize in the traditional commutative algebra sense. However, we prove a theorem which says that "up to the action of the group", these chains locally stabilize. We also give an algorithm, which we have implemented in software, for explicitly constructing these stabilization generators for a family of Laurent toric ideals involved in applications to algebraic sta…
Let $R = \bigoplus_{n \in \mathbb{N}_0} R_n$ be a Noetherian homogeneous ring with local base ring $(R_0, \mathfrak{m}_0)$ and let $M$ and $N$ be finitely generated graded $R$-modules. Let $i,j\in\mathbb{N}_0$. In this paper we will study Artinianess of $Γ_{\mathfrak m_0R}(H_{R_+}^i(M,N)), H_{\mathfrak m_0R}^1(H_{R_+}^i(M,N)), H_{R_+}^i(M,N)/{\mathfrak m_0}H_{R_+}^i(M,N), H_{R_+}^j(M,H_{\mathfrak m_0R}^i(N)), H_{\mathfrak m_0R}^j(M,H_{R_+}^i(N))$, where $R_+$ denotes the irrelevant ideal of $R$.
Gorenstein homological dimensions are refinements of the classical homological dimensions, and finiteness singles out modules with amenable properties reflecting those of modules over Gorenstein rings. As opposed to their classical counterparts, these dimensions do not immediately come with practical and robust criteria for finiteness, not even over commutative noetherian local rings. In this paper we enlarge the class of rings known to admit good criteria for finiteness of Gorenstein dimensions: It now includes, for instance, the rings encountered in commutative algebraic geometry and, in the…
Let $R$ be a commutative Noetherian ring and $\fa$ an ideal of $R$. We intend to establish the dual of two Faltings' Theorems for local homology modules of an Artinian module. As a consequence of this, we show that, if $A$ is an Artinian module over semi-local complete ring $R$ and $j$ is an integer such that $H_i^{\fa}(A)$ is Artinian for all $i<j$, then the set $\Coass_R(H_j^{\fa}(A))$ is finite. We also introduce the notion of the $n$th Artinianness dimension $g_n^\fa(A)=\inf\{g^{\fa R_{\fp}}(^\fp A): \fp\in\Spec(R) \ \ \text{and} \ \ \dim R/\fp\geq n\}$, for all $n\in\mathbb{N}_{0}$ and pr…
We investigate the similarities between adic finiteness and homological finiteness for chain complexes over a commutative noetherian ring. In particular, we extend the isomorphism properties of certain natural morphisms from homologically finite complexes to adically finite complexes. We do the same for characterizations of certain homological dimensions. In addition, we study transfer of adic finiteness along ring homomorphisms, all with a view toward subsequent applications.
Let a be an ideal of a commutative Noetherian ring R with identity. We study finitely generated R-modules M whose a-finiteness and a-cohomological dimensions are equal. In particular, we examine relative analogues of quasi-Buchsbaum, Buchsbaum and surjective Buchsbaum modules. We reveal several interactions between these types of modules that extend some of the existing results in the classical theory to the relative one.
Let (R,m) be a complete local ring, a an ideal of R and M a finitely generated R-module. The aim of this paper is to show that for any non-negative integer n, the least integer i such that the i-th local cohomology with respect to a is not in dimension <n, is equal to the n-th finiteness dimension of M relative to a. This generalizes the main result of Quy and Brodmann-Lashgari.
We investigate Matlis duals of local cohomology modules and prove that, in general, their zeroth Bass number with respect to the zero ideal is not finite. We also prove that, somewhat surprisingly, if we apply local cohomology again (i. e. to the Matlis dual of the local cohomology module), we get (under certain hypotheses) either zero or $E$, an $R$-injective hull of the residue field of the local ring $R$.
Let $S^{\cdot}$ be a noetherian graded algebra over a commutative $k$-algebra $A$, where $k$ is a commutative ring, and assume it is a module over a Lie algebroid ${\mathfrak g}_{A/k}$. If $S^\cdot$ is semi-simple over ${\mathfrak g}_{A/k}$ we prove that its ring of invariants $\bar S^{\cdot}$ is notherian. When ${\mathfrak g}_{A/k}$ is a solvable Lie algebra over $A$ we construct noetherian subalgebras of $S^\cdot$ from subsets of characters of ${\mathfrak g}_{A/k}$. We give similar results for noetherian modules over the pair $(S^{\cdot}, {\mathfrak g}_{A/k})$.
In this paper we describe an inductive machinery to investigate asymptotic behaviors of homology groups and related invariants of representations of certain graded combinatorial categories over a commutative Noetherian ring $k$, via introducing inductive functors which generalize important properties of shift functors of $\mathrm{FI}$-modules. In particular, a sufficient criterion for finiteness of Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of finitely generated representations of these categories is obtained. As applications, we show that a few important infinite combinatorial categories appearing in rep…
In this paper, using the canonical correspondence between the idempotents and clopens, we obtain several new results on lifting idempotents. The Zariski clopens of the maximal spectrum are precisely determined, then as an application, lifting idempotents modulo the Jacobson radical is characterized. Lifting idempotents modulo an arbitrary ideal is also characterized in terms of certain connected sets related to that ideal. Then as an application, we obtain that the sum of a lifting ideal and a regular ideal is a lifting ideal. We prove that lifting idempotents preserves the orthogonality in co…
We introduce the theory of monoidal Groebner bases, a concept which generalizes the familiar notion in a polynomial ring and allows for a description of Groebner bases of ideals that are stable under the action of a monoid. The main motivation for developing this theory is to prove finiteness theorems in commutative algebra and its applications. A major result of this type is that ideals in infinitely many indeterminates stable under the action of the symmetric group are finitely generated up to symmetry. We use this machinery to give new proofs of some classical finiteness theorems in algebra…
In this article, we study the behaviour of smooth algebra $R$ over local Noetherian local ring $A$. At first, we observe that for every $f\in R$, $R_f$ has finite length in the category of $D(R,A)$-module if dimension of $A$ is zero. This extends the result of Theorem 2 of \cite{Ly3}. We use this fact to generalize the result of Theorem 4.1 of \cite{BBLSZ}, from the finiteness of the set of associated primes of local cohomology module to that of Lyubeznik functor. Finally, we introduce the definition of $Σ$-finite $D$-modulue for smooth algebra and we extend the result of Theorem 1.3 of \cite{…
We construct an explicit filtration of the ring of algebraic power series by finite dimensional constructible sets, measuring the complexity of these series. As an application, we give a bound on the dimension of the set of algebraic power series of bounded complexity lying on an algebraic variety defined over the field of power series.
Let $R$ be a commutative Noetherian ring, $\fa$ an ideal of $R$ and $M$ a finitely generated $R$--module. Let $t$ be a non-negative integer such that $\H^i_\fa(M)$ is $\fa$--cofinite for all $i<t$. It is well--known that $\Hom_R(R/\fa,\H^t_\fa(M))$ is finitely generated $R$--module. In this paper we study the finiteness of $\Ext^1_R(R/\fa,\H^t_\fa(M))$ and $\Ext^2_R(R/\fa,\H^t_\fa(M))$.
We prove a versions of amplitude inequalities of Iversen, Foxby and Iyengar, and Frankild and Sather-Wagstaff that replace finite generation conditions with adic finiteness conditions. As an application, we prove that a local ring $R$ of prime characteristic is regular if and only if for some proper ideal $\mathfrak b$ the derived local cohomology complex $\mathbf{R}Γ_{\mathfrak{b}}(R)$ has finite flat dimension when viewed through some positive power of the Frobenius endomorphism.
We introduce the dual notions of $\mathcal{E}(\mathcal{X},M,\mathcal{Y})$ and $\mathcal{M}(\mathcal{X},M,\mathcal{Y})$, and investigate when they have enough injective objects or projective objects, when they are resolving or co-resolving, and when they are Frobenius categories. In the case that they are Frobenius categories, we establish a recollement of their stable categories. Finally some applications to comma categories are given.
In this paper, we prove several results on the finiteness of local cohomology of polynomial and formal power series rings. In particular, we give a partial affirmative answer for a question of L. Núñez-Betancourt in [J. Algebra 399 (2014), 770--781].
It is proved that an element $r$ in the center of a coherent ring $Λ$ annihilates $\mathrm{Ext}^{n}_Λ(M,N)$, for some positive integer $n$ and all finitely presented $Λ$-modules $M$ and $N$, if and only if the bounded derived category of $Λ$ is an extension of the subcategory consisting of complexes annihilated by $r$ and those obtained as $n$-fold extensions of $Λ$. This has applications to finiteness of dimension of derived categories.
Let $(R,\fr m)$ be a Noetherian local ring, $I$ an ideal of $R$ and $M, N$ two finitely generated $R$-modules. The first result of this paper is to prove a vanishing theorem for generalized local cohomology modules which says that $H^j_I(M,N)=0$ for all $j>\dim(R)$, provided $M$ is of finite projective dimension. Next, we study and give characterizations for the least and the last integer $r$ such that $\Supp(H^r_I(M,N))$ is infinite.
We study integer-graded cohomology rings defined over Calabi-Yau categories. We show that the cohomology in negative degree is a trivial extension of the cohomology ring in non-negative degree, provided the latter admits a regular sequence of central elements of length two. In particular, the product of elements of negative degrees are zero. As corollaries we apply this to Tate-Hochschild cohomology rings of symmetric algebras, and to Tate cohomology rings over group algebras. We also prove similar results for Tate cohomology rings over commutative local Gorenstein rings.
Let $\frak a$ be an ideal of a commutative noetherian ring $R$ with unity and $M$ an $R$-module supported at $\V(\fa)$. Let $n$ be the supermum of the integers $i$ for which $H^{\fa}_i(M)\neq 0$. We show that $M$ is $\fa$-cofinite if and only if the $R$-module $\Tor^R_i(R/\fa,M)$ is finitely generated for every $0\leq i\leq n$. This provides a hands-on and computable finitely-many-steps criterion to examine $\mathfrak{a}$-confiniteness. Our approach relies heavily on the theory of local homology which demonstrates the effectiveness and indispensability of this tool.
In this paper, as an analogue of the spectrum of a tensor triangulated category introduced by Balmer, we define a spectrum of a triangulated category which does not necessarily admit a tensor structure. We apply it for some triangulated categories associated to a commutative noetherian ring.
Let $R$ be a noetherian ring, $\fa$ an ideal of $R$, and $M$ an $R$--module. We prove that for a finite module $M$, if $\LC^{i}_{\fa}(M)$ is minimax for all $i\geq r\geq 1$, then $\LC^{i}_{\fa}(M)$ is artinian for $i\geq r$. A Local-global Principle for minimax local cohomology modules is shown. If $\LC^{i}_{\fa}(M)$ is coatomic for $i\leq r$ ($M$ finite) then $\LC^{i}_{\fa}(M)$ is finite for $i\leq r$. We give conditions for a module, which is locally minimax to be a minimax module. A non-vanishing theorem and some vanishing theorems are proved for local cohomology modules.
In this paper we are concerned with the finiteness property of Ext-indices of several ring extensions. In this direction, we introduce some conjectures and discuss the relationship of them. Also we give affirmative answers to these conjectures in some special cases. Furthermore, we prove that the trivial extension of an Artinian local ring by its residue class field is always of finite Ext-index and we show that the Auslander-Reiten conjecture is true for this type of rings.
We formulate a notion of "geometric reductivity" in an abstract categorical setting which we refer to as adequacy. The main theorem states that the adequacy condition implies that the ring of invariants is finitely generated. This result applies to the category of modules over a bialgebra, the category of comodules over a bialgebra, and the category of quasi-coherent sheaves on a finite type algebraic stack over an affine base.
