Let $G$ be a connected simple linear Lie group of rank one, and let $Γ<G$ be a discrete Zariski dense subgroup admitting a finite Bowen-Margulis-Sullivan measure $m^{\operatorname{BMS}}$. We show that the right translation action of the one dimensional diagonalizable subgroup is mixing on $(Γ\backslash G, m^{\operatorname{BMS}})$. Together with the work of Roblin, this proves ergodicity of the Burger-Roblin measure under the horospherical group $N$, establishes a classification theorem for $N$ invariant Radon measures on $Γ\backslash G$, and provides precise asymptotics for the Haar measure matrix coefficients.
It is known that locally constant toral extensions of hyperbolic systems can never mix at an exponential rate. In this note we exhibit some examples of non-abelian locally constant compact extensions of the shift map which are exponentially mixing for Holder-$L^2$ observables. The proof rests on a result of Bourgain-Gamburd and a decoupling argument.
We construct, over some minimal translations of the two torus, special flows under a differentiable ceiling function that combine the properties of mixing and rank one.
We study topological mixing properties and the maximal equicontinuous factor of rank-one subshifts as topological dynamical systems. We show that the maximal equicontinuous factor of a rank-one subshift is finite. We also determine all the finite factors of a rank-one shift with a condition involving the cutting and spacer parameters. For rank-one subshifts with bounded spacer parameter we completely characterize weak mixing and mixing. For rank-one subshifts with unbounded spacer parameter we prove some sufficient conditions for weak mixing and mixing. We also construct some examples showing …
In paper [1] S. V. Tikhonov introduced a complete metric on the space of mixing transformations. It generates a topology called leash-topology. In [2] Tikhonov states the following problem: for what mixing transformation T its conjugacy class is dense in the space of mixing transformations with leash-topology? We show that it is true for every mixing T. As a corollary we get that generic mixing is rank-1.
J.-P. Thouvenot and the author showed via different approaches that the centralizer of a mixing rank-one infinite measure preserving transformation was trivial. In this note the author presents his joining proof. We also consider constructions with algebraic spacers as well as a class of Sidon constructions to produce new examples of mixing rank one transformations. In connection with Gordin's question on the existence of homoclinic ergodic actions for a zero entropy system we also discuss Poisson suspensions of some modifications of Sidon rank one constructions.
We prove that mixing on rank-one transformations is equivalent to the spacer sequence being slice-ergodic. Slice-ergodicity, introduced in this paper, generalizes the notion of ergodic sequence to the uniform convergence of ergodic averages (as in the mean ergodic theorem) over subsequences of partial sums. We show that polynomial staircase transformations satisfy this condition and therefore are mixing.
We study the notions of weak rational ergodicity and rational weak mixing as defined by Jon Aaronson. We prove that various families of infinite measure-preserving rank-one transformations possess (or do not posses) these properties, and consider their relation to other notions of mixing in infinite measure.
Given a compact surface $\mathcal{M}$ with a smooth area form $ω$, we consider an open and dense subset of the set of smooth closed 1-forms on $\mathcal{M}$ with isolated zeros which admit at least one saddle loop homologous to zero and we prove that almost every element in the former induces a mixing flow on each minimal component. Moreover, we provide an estimate of the speed of the decay of correlations for smooth functions with compact support on the complement of the set of singularities. This result is achieved by proving a quantitative version for the case of finitely many singularities…
We prove that a rank one transformation satisfying a condition called restricted growth is a mixing transformation if and only if the spacer sequence for the transformation is uniformly ergodic. Uniform ergodicity is a generalization of the notion of ergodicity for sequences in the sense that the mean ergodic theorem holds for what we call dynamical sequences. In particular, Adams' class of staircase transformations and Ornstein's class constructed using ``random spacers'' have both restricted growth and uniformly ergodic spacer sequences.
We prove mixing on a general class of rank-one transformations containing all known examples of rank-one mixing, including staircase transformations and Ornstein's constructions, and a variety of new constructions.
For flows the rank is an invariant by linear change of time. But what we can say about isomorphisms? It seems that in case of mixing flows this problem is the most difficult. However the known technique of joinings provides non-isomorphism for mixing rank-one flows under linear change of time. For automorphisms we consider another problems (with similar solutions). For example, the staircase cutting-and-stacking construction is set by a height $h_1$ of the first tower and a sequence $\{r_j\}$ of cut numbers. Let us consider two similar constructions: one is set by $(h_1, \{r_j\})$, another is …
If $(M,g)$ is a smooth compact rank $1$ Riemannian manifold without focal points, it is shown that the measure $μ_{\max}$ of maximal entropy for the geodesic flow is unique. In this article, we study the statistic properties and prove that this unique measure $μ_{\max}$ is mixing. Stronger conclusion that the geodesic flow on the unit tangent bundle $SM$ with respect to $μ_{\max}$ is Bernoulli is acquired provided $M$ is a compact surface with genus greater than one and no focal points.
It is shown that each non-compact locally compact second countable non-(T) group $G$ possesses non-strongly ergodic weakly mixing IDPFT Poisson actions of arbitrary Krieger's type. These actions are amenable if and only if $G$ is amenable. If $G$ has the Haagerup property then (and only then) these actions can be chosen of 0-type. If $G$ is amenable and unimodular then $G$ has weakly mixing Bernoulli actions of any possible Krieger's type.
We show that genuinely higher rank expanding actions of abelian semi-groups on compact manifolds are $C^{\infty}$-conjugate to affine actions on infra-nilmanifolds. This is based on the classification of expanding diffeomorphisms up to \holder conjugacy by Gromov and Shub, and is similar to recent work on smooth classification of higher rank Anosov actions on tori and nilmanifolds. To prove regularity of the conjugacy in the higher rank setting, we establish exponential mixing of solenoid actions induced from semi-group actions by nilmanifold endomorphisms, a result of independent interest. We…
We generalize the notion of weakly mixing unitary representations to locally compact quantum groups, introducing suitable extensions of all standard characterizations of weak mixing to this setting. These results are used to complement the noncommutative Jacobs-de Leeuw-Glicksberg splitting theorem of Runde and the author ["Ergodic theory for quantum semigroups", J. Lond. Math. Soc. (2) 89 (2014) 941-959]. Furthermore, a relation between mixing and weak mixing of state-preserving actions of discrete quantum groups and the properties of certain inclusions of von Neumann algebras, which is known…
In this paper we study the equidistribution of expanding horospheres in infinite volume geometrically finite rank one locally symmetric manifolds and apply it to the orbital counting problem in apollonian sphere packing.
Mixing (of all orders) rank-one actions $T$ of Heisenberg group $H_3(\Bbb R)$ are constructed. The restriction of $T$ to the center of $H_3(\Bbb R)$ is simple and commutes only with $T$. Mixing Poisson and mixing Gaussian actions of $H_3(\Bbb R)$ are also constructed. A rigid weakly mixing rank-one action $T$ is constructed such that the restriction of $T$ to the center of $H_3(\Bbb R)$ is not isomorphic to its inverse.
The aim of this paper is to study the spectrum of the $L^p$ Laplacian and the dynamics of the $L^p$ heat semigroup on non-compact locally symmetric spaces of higher rank. Our work here generalizes previously obtained results in the setting of locally symmetric spaces of rank one to higher rank spaces. Similarly as in the rank one case, it turns out that the $L^p$ heat semigroup on $M$ has a certain chaotic behavior if $p\in(1,2)$ whereas for $p\geq 2$ such a chaotic behavior never occurs.
Let $X$ be a compact, geodesically complete, locally CAT(0) space such that the universal cover admits a rank one axis. We prove the Bowen-Margulis measure on the space of geodesics is the unique measure of maximal entropy for the geodesic flow, which has topological entropy equal to the critical exponent of the Poincaré series.
We show that ergodic affine abelian discrete actions on the torus, that have a rank-one factor in their linear part, are locally rigid in a KAM sense if and only if the rank one factor is trivial and the action is higher-rank transversally to this factor. Since it has been proved by Damjanovic and Katok that affine actions with higher-rank linear part are locally rigid, our result completes the local rigidity picture for affine actions on the torus.
We prove that minimal area-preserving flows locally given by a smooth Hamiltonian on a closed surface of any genus are typically (in the measure-theoretical sense) not mixing. The result is obtained by considering special flows over interval exchange transformations under roof functions with symmetric logarithmic singularities and proving absence of mixing for a full measure set of interval exchange transformations.
We recall a proof of the mixing for almost all Ornstein's stochastic rank one constructions, replace stochastic spacers by special algebraic ones and prove the mixing in this new situation.
In this article we will see some properties that guarantee that a product of an ergodic non-singular action and a probability preserving ergodic action is also an ergodic action. We will start by proving 'The multiplier theorem' for locally compact abelian groups. Then we will show that for certain locally compact Polish groups (Moore groups, and minimally weakly mixing groups), a non-singular G action is weakly mixing if and only if any finite dimensional G-invariant subspace of L_\infty is trivial. Finally, we will show that the Gaussian action associated to the infinite dimensional irreduci…
Equilibrium states for geodesic flows over closed rank 1 manifolds were studied recently by Burns, Climenhaga, Fisher and Thompson. For sufficiently regular potentials, it was shown that if the singular set does not carry full pressure then the equilibrium state is unique. The main result of this paper is that these equilibrium states have the Kolmogorov property. In particular, these measures are mixing of all orders and have positive entropy. For the Bowen-Margulis measure, we go further and obtain the Bernoulli property from the K-property using classic arguments from Ornstein theory. Our a…
Let $X$ be a compact, geodesically complete, locally CAT(0) space such that the universal cover admits a rank one axis. Assume $X$ is not homothetic to a metric graph with integer edge lengths. Let $P_t$ be the number of parallel classes of oriented closed geodesics of length $\le t$; then $\lim\limits_{t \to \infty} P_t / \frac{e^{ht}}{ht} = 1$, where $h$ is the entropy of the geodesic flow on the space $SX$ of parametrized unit-speed geodesics in $X$.
We present a strategy for a geometric construction of cross sections for the geodesic flow on locally symmetric orbifolds of rank one. We work it out in detail for $Γ\backslash H$, where $H$ is the upper half plane and $Γ=\PGamma_0(p)$, $p$ prime. Its associated discrete dynamical system naturally induces a symbolic dynamics on $\R$. The transfer operator produced from this symbolic dynamics has a particularly simple structure.
Downarowicz and Maass (2008) proposed topological ranks for all homeomorphic Cantor minimal dynamical systems using properly ordered Bratteli diagrams. In this study, we adopt this definition to the case of all essentially minimal zero-dimensional systems. We consider the cases in which topological ranks are 2 and unique minimal sets are fixed points. Akin and Kolyada (2003), in their study of Li--Yorke sensitivity, showed that if the unique minimal set of an essentially minimal system is a fixed point, then the system must be proximal. However, a finite topological rank implies expansiveness;…
We study mixing properties of commutative groups of automorphisms acting on compact nilmanifolds. Assuming that every nontrivial element acts ergodically, we prove that such actions are mixing of all orders. We further show exponential 2-mixing and 3-mixing. As an application we prove smooth cocycle rigidity for higher-rank abelian groups of nilmanifold automorphisms.
For a weakly mixing bounded rank-one construction the disjointness of its powers is proved. For non-rigid constructions we get minimal self-joinings. Examples of non-mixing rank one actions with explicit weak closure are proposed.
We prove the existence of a mixing rank one map $T$ such that the product $T\otimes T^2\otimes T^3\otimes...$ has simple spectrum. This result is used in S.V. Thikhonov's proof of the existence of mixing transformation with homogeneous spectrum of multiplicity $m>2$.
We prove effective equidistribution of horospherical flows in $\operatorname{SO}(n,1)^\circ / Γ$ when $Γ$ is geometrically finite and the frame flow is exponentially mixing for the Bowen-Margulis-Sullivan measure. We also discuss settings in which such an exponential mixing result is known to hold. As part of the proof, we show that the Patterson-Sullivan measure satisfies some friendly-like properties when $Γ$ is geometrically finite.
We construct a rank one infinite measure preserving transformation $T$ such that for all sequences of nonzero integers $\{k_{1},..., k_{r}\}$, $T^{k_{1}}\times...\times T^{k_{r}}$ is ergodic.
For any infinite zero-density integer set M, we found a rigid measure-preserving transformation mixing along M by answering Bergelson's question. Gaussian and Poisson suspensions over infinite constructions are suggested as suitable examples. We also discuss rigid rank one transformations of finite measure that mix along a given set, and some analogues for group actions.
The note contains a collection of facts and observations around locally rank one actions as well as constructions connected with some results by T.Downarowicz, A.Katok, J.King, F.Parreau, A.A.Prikhodko, E.Roy, J.Serafin, J-P.Thouvenot et al.
We generalize the higher rank rigidity theorem to a class of Finsler spaces, i.e. Berwald spaces. More precisely, we prove that a complete connected Berwald space of finite volume and bounded nonpositive flag curvature with rank at least $2$ whose universal cover is irreducible, is a locally symmetric space or a locally Minkowski space.
In this paper we complete the program of relating the Laplace spectrum for rank one compact locally symmetric spaces with the first band Ruelle-Pollicott resonances of the geodesic flow on its sphere bundle. This program was started by Flaminio and Forni for hyperbolic surfaces, continued by Dyatlov, Faure and Guillarmou for real hyperbolic spaces and by Guillarmou, Hilgert and Weich for general rank one spaces. Except for the case of hyperbolic surfaces a countable set of exceptional spectral parameters always left untreated since the corresponding Poisson transforms are neither injective nor…
A sequence $a_n\da 0$ forms a rate of random mixing for a unitary system $(G,μ, π, {\cal H})$ if for any $u, v\in {\cal H}$ $$\limsup {|<π(g_n^ω)u, v>|\over a_n} < \infty$$ a.e. $ω$ in the probability space $(G^{\mathbb N}, μ^{\mathbb N})$ of the random walk induced by $μ$. We study the class of locally compact groups none of whose representation has any rate of random mixing and prove that this class contains Moore groups and certain solvable groups which includes the group of affine transformations on a local field.
In this work, we will introduce and study the notion of local randomness for compact metric groups. We prove a mixing inequality as well as a product result for locally random groups under an additional dimension condition on the volume of small balls and provide several examples of such groups. In particular, this leads to new examples of groups satisfying such a mixing inequality. In the same context, we will develop a Littlewood-Paley decomposition and explore its connection to the existence of the spectral gap for random walks. Moreover, under the dimension condition alone, we will prove a…
We give conditions for the exactness of Rokhlin endomorphisms, apply these to random walks on locally compact, second countable topological groups and obtain that the action on the Poisson boundary of an adapted random walk on such a group is weakly mixing.
We prove effective decay of certain multiple correlation coefficients for measure preserving, mixing Weyl chamber actions of semidirect products of semisimple groups with $G$-vector spaces. These estimates provide decay for some semisimple groups of higher rank.
Let $J$ be a semisimple Lie group with all simple factors of real rank at least two. Let $Γ<J$ be a lattice. We prove a very general local rigidity result about actions of $J$ or $Γ$. This shows that almost all so-called "standard actions" are locally rigid. As a special case, we see that any action of $Γ$ by toral automorphisms is locally rigid. More generally, given a manifold $M$ on which $Γ$ acts isometrically and a torus $\Ta^n$ on which it acts by automorphisms, we show that the diagonal action on $\Ta^n{\times}M$ is locally rigid. This paper is the culmination of a series of papers and …
Let $X$ be a proper, geodesically complete CAT(0) space under a proper, non-elementary, isometric action by a group $Γ$ with a rank one element. We construct a generalized Bowen-Margulis measure on the space of unit-speed parametrized geodesics of $X$ modulo the $Γ$-action. Although the construction of Bowen-Margulis measures for rank one nonpositively curved manifolds and for CAT(-1) spaces is well-known, the construction for CAT(0) spaces hinges on establishing a new structural result of independent interest: Almost no geodesic, under the Bowen-Margulis measure, bounds a flat strip of any po…
We study the locally compact abelian groups in the class $\mathfrak E_{<\infty}$, that is, having only continuous endomorphisms of finite topological entropy, and in its subclass $\mathfrak E_0$, that is, having all continuous endomorphisms with vanishing topological entropy. We discuss the reduction of the problem to the case of periodic locally compact abelian groups, and then to locally compact abelian $p$-groups. We show that locally compact abelian $p$-groups of finite rank belong to $\mathfrak E_{<\infty}$, and that those of them that belong to $\mathfrak E_0$ are precisely the ones with…
We present a new criterion, based on commutator methods, for the strong mixing property of unitary representations of topological groups equipped with a proper length function. Our result generalises and unifies recent results on the strong mixing property of discrete flows $\{U^N\}_{N\in\mathbb Z}$ and continuous flows $\{{\rm e}^{-itH}\}_{t\in\mathbb R}$ induced by unitary operators $U$ and self-adjoint operators $H$ in a Hilbert space. As an application, we present a short alternative proof (not using convolutions) of the strong mixing property of the left regular representation of $σ$-comp…
