We study the locus of abelian Galois covers of $\mathbb{P}^{1}$ in $A_{g}$ and the problem of occurrence of Shimura (special) subvarieties generated by these covers in the Torelli locus $T_{g}$ inside $A_{g}$. We first investigate the existence of Shimura subvarieties in the mentioned locus by some computational methods based on Moonen-Oort works and then exclude many cases using both characteristic $p$ methods and monodromy computations.
We show the existence of two new Shimura subvarieties of $\mathcal{A}_2, \mathcal{A}_3$ generically contained in the Torelli locus. They provide the first examples of Shimura subvarieties obtained by means of Jacobians carrying non-trivial endomorphisms not directly induced by the automorphisms of the curves. We also obtain a new example of a Shimura subvariety of $\mathcal{A}_4$ generically contained in the Prym locus.
We show that families of Pryms of abelian Galois covers of $\mathbb{P}^1$ in $A_{g-1}$ (resp. $A_g$) do not give rise to high dimensional Shimura subvareties.
We study Shimura (special) subvarieties in the moduli space $A_{p,D}$ of complex abelian varieties of dimension $p$ and polarization type $D$. These subvarieties arise from families of covers compatible with a fixed group action on the base curve such that the quotient of the base curve by the group is isomorphic to $\mathbb{P}^1$. We give a criterion for the image of these families under the Prym map to be a special subvariety and, using computer algebra, obtain 210 Shimura subvarieties contained in the Prym locus.
We prove the non-existence of Shimura subvarieties of positive dimension contained generically in the hyperelliptic Torelli locus for curves of genus at least 8, which is an analogue of Oort's conjecture in the hyperelliptic case.
This paper gives a complete parametrization of the commensurability classes of totally geodesic subspaces of irreducible arithmetic quotients of $X_{a, b} = (\mathbf{H}^2)^a \times (\mathbf{H}^3)^b$. A special case describes all Shimura subvarieties of type $\mathrm{A}_1$ Shimura varieties. We produce, for any $n\geq 1$, examples of manifolds/Shimura varieties with precisely $n$ commensurability classes of totally geodesic submanifolds/Shimura subvarieties. This is in stark contrast with the previously studied cases of arithmetic hyperbolic $3$-manifolds and quaternionic Shimura surfaces, wher…
We study the image of $\ell$-adic representations attached to subvarieties of Shimura varieties $Sh_K(G,X)$ that are not contained in a smaller Shimura subvariety and have no isotrivial components. We show that, for $\ell$ large enough (depending on the Shimura datum $(G,X)$ and the subvariety), such image contains the $\mathbb{Z}_\ell$-points coming from the simply connected cover of the derived subgroup of $G$. This can be regarded as a geometric version of the integral $\ell$-adic Mumford-Tate conjecture.
Let $S$ be a Shimura variety with reflex field $E$. We prove that the action of $\operatorname{Gal}(\overline{\mathbb{Q}}/E)$ on $S$ maps special points to special points and special subvarieties to special subvarieties. Furthermore, the Galois conjugates of a special point all have the same complexity (as defined in the theory of unlikely intersections). These results follow from Milne and Shih's construction of canonical models of Shimura varieties, based on a conjecture of Langlands which was proved by Borovoi and Milne.
A conjecture by Yves Andre and Frans Oort says that closed subvarieties of Shimura varieties that contain a Zariski dense subset of special points are subvarieties of Hodge type. We prove this in the case where the subvariety is a curve that contains infinitely many special points that lie in one Hecke orbit. Via work of Juergen Wolfart, Paula Cohen and Gisbert Wuestholz, this result has an application to algebraicity of values of hypergeometric functions.
Let $Y$ be a subvariety contained in a smooth Mumford compactification of an orthogonal Shimura variety $M \subset A_g$, where $A_g$ is the moduli space of principally polarized abelian varieties of dimension $g$ with some level structure, such that $Y$ intersects the boundary of $A_g$ transversally. Then we give necessary and sufficient conditions of André-Oort type for $Y$ itself being the compactification of a special subvariety $Y^0 \subset M$
We study Shimura subvarieties of $\mathsf{A}_g$ obtained from families of Galois coverings $f: C \rightarrow C'$ where $C'$ is a smooth complex projective curve of genus $g' \geq 1$ and $g= g(C)$. We give the complete list of all such families that satisfy a simple sufficient condition that ensures that the closure of the image of the family via the Torelli map yields a Shimura subvariety of $\mathsf{A}_g$ for $g' =1,2$ and for all $g \geq 2,4$ and for $g' > 2$ and $g \leq 9$. In a previous work of the first and second author together with A. Ghigi [FGP] similar computations were done in the c…
We study families of Galois covers of curves of positive genus. It is known that under a numerical condition these families yield Shimura subvarieties generically contained in the Jacobian locus. We prove that there are only 6 families satisfying this condition, all of them in genus 2,3 or 4. We also show that these families admit two fibrations in totally geodesic subvarieties, generalizing a result of Grushevsky and Möller. Countably many of these fibres are Shimura. Thus the Jacobian locus contains infinitely many Shimura subvarieties of positive dimension of any $g \leq 4$.
We study the Torelli locus T_g in the moduli space A_g of abelian varieties. We consider special subvarieties (Shimura subvarieties) contained in the Torelli locus. We review the construction of some non-trivial examples, and we discuss some conjectures, techniques and recent progress.
We prove that under some conditions on the monodromy, families of abelian covers of the projective line do not give rise to (higher dimensional) Shimura subvarieties in $A_g$. This is achieved by a reduction to $p$ argument. We also use another method based on monodromy computations to show that two dimensional subvarieties in the above locus are not special. In particular it is shown that such families have usually large monodromy groups. Together with our earlier results, the above mentioned results contribute to classifying the special families in the moduli space of abelian varieties and p…
In this paper we study the Oort conjecture on Shimura subvarieties contained generically in the Torelli locus in the Siegel modular variety $\mathcal{A}_g$. Using the poly-stability of Higgs bundles on curves and the slope inequality of Xiao on fibred surfaces, we show that a Shimura curve $C$ is not contained generically in the Torelli locus if its canonical Higgs bundles contains a unitary Higgs subbundle of rank at least $(4g+2)/5$. From this we prove that a Shimura subvariety of $\mathbf{SU}(n,1)$-type is not contained generically in the Torelli locus when a numerical inequality holds, whi…
If A is an Abelian variety, endowed with a polarization L, we study the function N_A(t) which counts the number of Abelian subvarieties S in A such that for the induced polarization L|_S the Euler characteristic χ(L|_S) is bounded above by t. We give an estimate for the asymptotic order of growth of this function.
Let X be a Mumford-Tate variety, i.e., a quotient of a Mumford-Tate domain D by a discrete subgroup. Mumford-Tate varieties are generalizations of Shimura varieties. We define the notion of a special subvariety Y in X (of Shimura type), and formulate necessary criteria for Y to be special. Our method consists in looking at finitely many compactified special curves C_i in Y, and testing whether the inclusion of the union of all C_i in Y satisfies certain properties. One of them is the so-called relative proportionality condition. In this paper, we give a new formulation of this numerical criter…
In this paper we consider ideal sheaves associated to the singular loci of a divisor in a linear system $|L|$ of an ample line bundle on a complex abelian variety. We prove an effective result on their (continuous) global generation, after suitable twists by powers of $L$. Moreover we show that similar results hold for subvarieties of a complex abelian variety.
For a prime $p>2$, Kisin and Pappas constructed parahoric integral models at $p$ for Shimura varieties attached to Shimura data $(G,X)$ of abelian type such that $G$ splits over a tamely ramified extension of $\mathbb{Q}_p$. A certain auxiliary data has to be chosen in their constructions. In this note, we will show that the parahoric integral models are actually independent of the choices of the auxiliary data. We also get partial results on extending morphisms of Shimura varieties to those of parahoric integral models.
A strongly special subvariety of a Shimura variety $S$ is (essentially) a subvariety associated to a semi-simple sub-Shimura datum. We prove that the set of probability measures canonically associated to to strongly special subvarieties is compact. More precisely: If $μ_n$ is a sequence of such probability measures associated to strongly special subvarieties $Z_n$ of $S$ there exists a subsequence $μ_{n_k}$ which converge to a measure $μ_Z$ canonically associated to a strongly special subvariety $Z$ and for all $k>>0$ $Z_{n_k}$ is contained in $Z$. We give some application to the Andre-Oort co…
In this paper we study the geometry of good reductions of Shimura varieties of abelian type. More precisely, we construct the Newton stratification, Ekedahl-Oort stratification, and central leaves on the special fiber of a Shimura variety of abelian type at a good prime. We establish several basic properties of these stratifications, including the non-emptiness, closure relation and dimension formula, generalizing those previously known in the PEL and Hodge type cases. We also study the relations between these stratifications, both in general and in some special cases, such as those of fully H…
Under the condition that the Prym map is injective in characteristic $p$, we prove that the special subvarieties in the moduli space of abelian varieties of dimension $l$ and polarization type $D$, $A_{l,D}$, arising from families of abelian covers of $¶^1$ are of a very restrictive nature. In other words, if the family is one-dimensional or if it contains an eigenspace of certain type for the group action on the cohomology of fibers, then the Shimura varieties arising from such families can only be constructed by the group action of the family.
We show that for an irreducible subvariety Y of an abelian variety X the Gauss mapping, from the conormal bundle of $Y$ to the dual of the tangent space of $X$ at the origin, is not dominant if and only if Y is degenerate in the sense that there exists a nontrivial abelian subvariety A of X such that A+Y=Y holds
In this paper we construct Shimura subvarieties of dimension bigger than one of the moduli space of polarised abelian varieties of a given dimension, which are generically contained in the Pym loci of (ramified) double covers. The idea is to adapt the techniques already used to construct Shimura curves in the Prym loci to the higher dimensional case, namely to use families of Galois covers of the projective line. The case of abelian covers is treated in detail, since in this case it is possible to make explicit computations that allow to verify a sufficient condition for such a family to yield…
We discuss various constructions which allow one to embed a principally polarized abelian variety in the jacobian of a curve. Each of these gives representatives of multiples of the minimal cohomology class for curves which in turn produce subvarieties of higher dimension representing multiples of the minimal class. We then discuss the problem of producing curves representing multiples of the minimal class via deformation-theoretic methods.
We present an approach to Green-Lazarsfeld's generic vanishing combining gaussian maps and the Fourier-Mukai transform associated to the Poincarè line bundle. As an application we prove the Generic Vanishing Theorem for all normal Cohen-Macaulay subvarieties of abelian varieties over an algebraically closed field. This paper is a reworking of part of arXiv:math/0310026v2 [math.AG], which contained a mistake.
Given a finite group $G$ and an abelian variety $A$ acted on by $G$, to any subgroup $H$ of $G$, we associate an abelian subvariety $A_H$ on which the associated Hecke algebra $\mathcal{H}_H$ for $H$ in $G$ acts. Any irreducible rational representation $\widetilde W$ of $\mathcal{H}_H$ induces an abelian subvariety of $A_H$ in a natural way. In this paper we give equations for this abelian subvariety. In a special case these equations become much easier. We work out some examples.
By means of the theory of strongly semistable sheaves and of the theory of the Greenberg transform, we generalize to higher dimensions a result on the sparsity of p-divisible unramified liftings which played a crucial role in Raynaud's proof of the Manin-Mumford conjecture for curves. We also give a bound for the number of irreducible components of the first critical scheme of subvarieties of an abelian variety which are complete intersections.
Let $Z$ be an algebraic subvariety of a Shimura variety. We extend results of the first author to prove an effective upper bound for the degree of a non-facteur maximal special subvariety of $Z$.
An algebraic subvariety Z of A_g is totally geodesic if it is the image via the natural projection map of some totally geodesic submanifold X of the Siegel space. We say that X is the symmetric space uniformizing Z. In this paper we determine which symmetric space uniformizes each of the low genus counterexamples to the Coleman-Oort conjecture obtained studying Galois covers of curves. It is known that the counterexamples obtained via Galois covers of elliptic curves admit two fibrations in totally geodesic subvarieties. The second result of the paper studies the relationship between these fib…
The relative proportionality principle of Hirzebruch and Höfer was discovered in the case of compactified ball quotient surfaces X when studying curves C in X. It can be expressed as an inequality which attains equality precisely when C is an induced quotient of a subball. A similar inequality holds for curves on Hilbert modular surfaces. In this paper we prove a generalization of this result to subvarieties of Shimura varieties of orthogonal type, i.e. locally symmetric spaces for the Lie group SO(n,2). Furthermore we study the ''inverse problem'' of deciding when an arbitrary subvariety Z of…
Ren and the second author established that the weakly optimal subvarieties (e.g. maximal weakly special subvarieties) of a subvariety $V$ of a Shimura variety arise in finitely many families. In this article, we refine this theorem by (1) constructing a finite collection of algebraic families whose fibers are precisely the weakly optimal subvarieties of $V$; (2) obtaining effective degree bounds on the weakly optimal locus and its individual members; (3) describing an effective procedure to determine the weakly optimal locus.
We prove an equidistribution result for small subvarieties of an abelian variety which generalizes the Szpiro-Ullmo-Zhang theorem on equidistribution of small points.
We construct an infinite number of Shimura curves contained in the locus of hyperelliptic Jacobians of genus 3. In the opposite direction, we show that in genus 3 the only possible non-complete (in the moduli space of abelian threefolds) Kuga curves contained in the hyperelliptic locus have the same degeneration data as that of the examples we construct. The locus of genus 3 hyperelliptic Jacobians is a divisor within the moduli space of principally polarized abelian threefolds, and our result demonstrates the techniques we develop more generally for dealing with Shimura curves contained withi…
We give a uniform bound on the degree of the maximal torsion cosets for subvarieties of an abelian variety. The proof combines algebraic interpolation and a theorem of Serre on homotheties in the Galois representation associated to the torsion subgroup of an abelian variety.
In this paper, we define and construct canonical filtered $F$-crystals with $G$-structure over the integral models for Shimura varieties of abelian type at hyperspecial level defined by Kisin. We check that these are related by $p$-adic comparison theorems to the usual lisse sheaves, and as an application we also use this to show that the Galois representations generated from the $p$-adic étale cohomology of Shimura varieties with nontrivial coefficient sheaves are crystalline, at least in the case of proper abelian type Shimura varieties.
Let $\mathbb{V}$ be a polarized variation of integral Hodge structure on a smooth complex quasi-projective variety $S$. In this paper, we show that the union of the non-factor special subvarieties for $(S, \mathbb{V})$, which are of Shimura type with dominant period maps, is a finite union of special subvarieties of $S$. This generalizes previous results of Clozel and Ullmo arXiv:math/0404131, Ullmo \cite{Ullmo07} on the distribution of the non-factor (in particular, strongly) special subvarieties in a Shimura variety to the non-classical setting and also answers positively the geometric part …
We express the Frobenius-Hecke traces on the compactly supported cohomology of a Shimura variety of abelian type in terms of elliptic parts of stable Arthur-Selberg trace formulas for the endoscopic groups. This confirms predictions of Langlands and Kottwitz at primes where the level is hyperspecial.
We prove a non-archimedean analogue of the fact that a closed subvariety of a semi-abelian variety is hyperbolic modulo its special locus, and thereby generalize a result of Cherry.
The Poincaré torsor of a Shimura family of abelian varieties can be viewed both as a family of semi-abelian varieties and as a mixed Shimura variety. We show that the special subvarieties of the latter cannot all be described in terms of the group subschemes of the former. This provides a counter-example to the relative Manin-Mumford conjecture, but also some evidence in favour of Pink's conjecture on unlikely intersections in mixed Shimura varieties. The main part of the article concerns mixed Hodge structures and the uniformization of the Poincaré torsor, but other, more geometric, approache…
In this article we use a Prym construction to study low dimensional abelian varieties with an action of the quaternion group. In special cases we describe the Shimura variety parameterizing such abelian varieties, as well as a map to this Shimura variety from a natural parameter space of quaternionic abelian varieties. Our description is based on the moduli of cubic threefolds with nine nodes, which we study in some detail.
We prove that for a large class of subvarieties of abelian varieties over global function fields, the Brauer-Manin condition on adelic points cuts out exactly the rational points. This result is obtained from more general results concerning the intersection of the adelic points of a subvariety with the adelic closure of the group of rational points of the abelian variety.
This paper is the sequel of our paper "Arithmetic height functions over finitely generated fields" (cf. math.NT/9809016). In this paper, we define the canonical height of subvarieties of an abelian variety over a finitely generated field over Q. We also prove that the canonical height of a subvariety is zero if and only if it is a translation of an abelian subvariety by a torsion point.
Given a family of Galois coverings of the projective line we give a simple sufficient condition ensuring that the closure of the image of the family via the period mapping is a special (or Shimura) subvariety in A_g. By a computer program we get the list of all families in genus up to 8 satisfying our condition. There is no family in genus 8, all of them are in genus at most 7. These examples are related to a conjecture of Oort. Among them we get the cyclic examples constructed by various authors (Shimura, Mostow, De Jong-Noot, Rohde, Moonen and others) and the abelian non-cyclic examples foun…
This survey article discusses some results on the structure of families f:V-->U of n-dimensional manifolds over quasi-projective curves U, with semistable reduction over a compactification Y of U. We improve the Arakelov inequality for the direct images of powers of the dualizing sheaf. For families of Abelian varieties we recall the characterization of Shimura curves by Arakelov equalities. For families of curves we recall the characterization of Teichmueller curves in terms of the existence of certain sub variation of Hodge structures. We sketch the proof that the moduli scheme of curves of …
Let f:X-->Y be a semi-stable family of complex abelian varieties over a curve Y of genus q, and smooth over the complement of s points. If F(1,0) denotes the non-flat (1,0) part of the corresponding variation of Hodge structures, the Arakelov inequalities say that 2deg(F(1,0)) is bounded from above by g=rank(F(1,0))(2q-2+s). We show that for s>0 families reaching this bound are isogenous to the g-fold product of a modular family of elliptic curves, and a constant abelian variety. For s=0, if the flat part of the VHS is defined over the rational numbers, the family is isogeneous to the g-fold p…
