We study implications of exact conformal invariance of scalar quantum field theories at the critical point in non-integer dimensions for the evolution kernels of the light-ray operators in physical (integer) dimensions. We demonstrate that all constraints due the conformal symmetry are encoded in the form of the generators of the collinear sl(2) subgroup. Two of them, S_- and S_0, can be fixed at all loops in terms of the evolution kernel, while the generator of special conformal transformations, S_+, receives nontrivial corrections which can be calculated order by order in perturbation theory. Provided that the generator S_+ is known at the k-1 loop order, one can fix the evolution kernel in physical dimension to the k-loop accuracy up to terms that are invariant with respect to the tree-level generators. The invariant parts can easily be restored from the anomalous dimensions. The method is illustrated on two examples: The O(n)-symmetric phi^4 theory in d=4 to the three-loop accuracy, and the su(n) matrix phi^3 theory in d=6 to the two-loop accuracy. We expect that the same technique can be used in gauge theories e.g. in QCD.
The massless QCD Lagrangian is conformally invariant and, as a consequence, so are the tree-level scattering amplitudes. However, the implications of this powerful symmetry at loop level are only beginning to be explored systematically. Even for finite loop amplitudes, the way conformal symmetry manifests itself may be subtle, e.g. in the form of anomalous conformal Ward identities. As they are finite and rational, the one-loop all-plus and single-minus amplitudes are a natural first step towards understanding the conformal properties of Yang-Mills theory at loop level. Remarkably, we find tha…
We introduce the notion of Multichannel Conformal Blocks relevant for the Operator Product Expansion for Null Polygon Wilson loops with more than six edges. As an application of these, we decompose the one loop heptagon Wilson loop and predict the value of its two loop OPE discontinuities. At the functional level, the OPE discontinuities are roughly half of the full result. Using symbols they suffice to predict the full two loop result. We also present several new predictions for the heptagon result at any loop order.
Planar gluon amplitudes in N=4 SYM are remarkably similar to expectation values of Wilson loops made of light-like segments. We argue that the latter can be determined by making use of the conformal symmetry of the gauge theory, broken by cusp anomalies. We derive the corresponding anomalous conformal Ward identities valid to all loops and show that they uniquely fix the form of the finite part of a Wilson loop with n cusps (up to an additive constant) for n=4 and n=5 and reduce the freedom in it to a function of conformal invariants for n>=6. We also present an explicit two-loop calculation f…
The cross-ratios do not uniquely fix the class of conformally equivalent configurations of null polygons. In view of applications to Wilson loops and scattering amplitudes we characterise all conformal classes of null hexagon configurations belonging to given points in cross-ratio space. At first this is done for the ordered set of vertices. Including the edges, we then investigate the equivalence classes under conformal transformations for null hexagons. This is done both for the set of null hexagons closed in finite domains of Minkowski space as well as for the set including those closed via…
Dual conformal symmetry has had a huge impact on our understanding of planar scattering amplitudes in N=4 super Yang-Mills. At tree level, it combines with the original conformal symmetry generators to a Yangian algebra, a hallmark of integrability, and helps in determining the tree-level amplitudes. The latter are now known in closed form. At loop level, it determines the functional form of the four- and five-point scattering amplitudes to all orders in the coupling constant, and gives restrictions at six points and beyond. The symmetry is best understood at loop level in terms of a novel AdS…
We carry out a three-loop computation that establishes the existence of scale without conformal invariance in dimensional regularization with the MS scheme in d=4-epsilon spacetime dimensions. We also comment on the effects of scheme changes in theories with many couplings, as well as in theories that live on non-conformal scale-invariant renormalization group trajectories. Stability properties of such trajectories are analyzed, revealing both attractive and repulsive directions in a specific example. We explain how our results are in accord with those of Jack & Osborn on a c-theorem in d=4 (a…
We present further evidence for a dual conformal symmetry in the four-gluon planar scattering amplitude in N=4 SYM. We show that all the momentum integrals appearing in the perturbative on-shell calculations up to five loops are dual to true conformal integrals, well defined off shell. Assuming that the complete off-shell amplitude has this dual conformal symmetry and using the basic properties of factorization of infrared divergences, we derive the special form of the finite remainder previously found at weak coupling and recently reproduced at strong coupling by AdS/CFT. We show that the sam…
It is proven that the pure spinor superstring in an AdS_5 x S^5 background remains conformally invariant at one loop level in the sigma model perturbation theory.
Singularities hidden in the collinear region around an external massless leg may lead to conformal symmetry breaking in otherwise conformally invariant finite loop momentum integrals. For an $\ell$-loop integral, this mechanism leads to a set of linear $2$nd-order differential equations with a non-homogeneous part. The latter, due to the contact nature of the anomaly in momentum space, is determined by $(\ell-1)$-loop information. Solving such differential equations in general is an open problem. In the case of 5-particle amplitudes up to two loops, the function space is known, and we can thus…
We use the conformal group to study non-local operators in conformal field theories. A plane or a sphere (of any dimension) is mapped to itself by some subgroup of the conformal group, hence operators confined to that submanifold may be classified in representations of this subgroup. For local operators this gives the usual definition of conformal dimension and spin, but some conformal field theories contain interesting nonlocal operators, like Wilson or 't Hooft loops. We apply those ideas to Wilson loops in four-dimensional CFTs and show how they can be chosen to be in fixed representations …
We provide two derivations of the one-loop dual conformal anomaly of generic n-point superamplitudes in maximally supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory. Our proofs are based on simple applications of unitarity, and the known analytic properties of the amplitudes.
We prove that 1-loop n-point NMHV superamplitudes in N=4 SYM theory are dual conformal covariant for all numbers n of external particles (after regularization and subtraction of IR divergences). This property was previously established for n < 10 in arXiv:0808.0491. We derive an explicit representation of these superamplitudes in terms of dual conformal cross-ratios. We also show that all the 1-loop `box coefficients' obtained from maximal cuts of N^kMHV n-point functions are covariant under dual conformal transformations.
By applying the conformal SO(2,4) transformations to the elementary one-cusp Wilson loop surface we construct various two-cusp and four-cusp Wilson loop surface configurations in AdS_5 and demonstrate that they solve the string equations of the Nambu-Goto string action. The conformal boosts of the basic four-cusp Wilson loop surface with a square-form projection generate various four-cusp Wilson loop surfaces with projections of the rescaled square, the rhombus and the trapezium, on which surfaces the classical Euclidean Nambu-Goto string actions in the IR dimensional regularization are evalua…
We reproduce the two-loop seven-point remainder function in planar, maximally supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory by direct integration of conformally-regulated chiral integrands. The remainder function is obtained as part of the two-loop logarithm of the MHV amplitude, the regularized form of which we compute directly in this scheme. We compare the scheme-dependent anomalous dimensions and related quantities in the conformal regulator with those found for the Higgs regulator.
Local, manifestly dual-conformally invariant loop integrands are now known for all finite quantities associated with observables in planar, maximally supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory through three loops. These representations, however, are not infrared-finite term by term and therefore require regularization; and even using a regulator consistent with dual-conformal invariance, ordinary methods of loop integration would naively obscure this symmetry. In this work, we show how any planar loop integral through at least two loops can be systematically regulated and evaluated directly in terms of …
We reveal a new mechanism of conformal symmetry breaking at Born level. It occurs in generalized form factors with several local operators and an on-shell state of massless particles. The effect is due to hidden singularities on collinear configurations of the momenta. This conformal anomaly is different from the holomorphic anomaly of amplitudes. We present a number of examples in four and six dimensions. We find an application of the new conformal anomaly to finite loop momentum integrals with one or more massless legs. The collinear region around a massless leg creates a contact anomaly, ma…
QCD evolution equations in minimal subtraction schemes have a hidden symmetry: One can construct three operators that commute with the evolution kernel and form an $SL(2)$ algebra, i.e. they satisfy (exactly) the $SL(2)$ commutation relations. In this paper we find explicit expressions for these operators to two-loop accuracy going over to QCD in non-integer $d=4-2ε$ space-time dimensions at the intermediate stage. In this way conformal symmetry of QCD is restored on quantum level at the specially chosen (critical) value of the coupling, and at the same time the theory is regularized allowing …
We study dual conformal transformations of minimal area surfaces in $AdS_5 \times S^5$ corresponding to holographic smooth Wilson loops and some other related observables. To act with dual conformal transformations we map the string solutions to the dual space by means of T-duality, then we apply a conformal transformation and finally T-dualize back to the original space. The transformation maps between string solutions with different boundary contours. The boundary contours of the minimal surfaces are not mapped back to the AdS boundary, and the regularized area of the surface changes.
We derive the anomalous conformal Ward identities for ${\cal N}=4$ SYM Wilson loops on polygon-like contours with edges formed by circular arcs. With a suitable choice of parameterisation they are very similarly to those for local correlation functions. Their solutions have a conformally covariant factor depending on the distances of the corners times a conformally invariant remainder factor depending, besides on cross ratios of the corners, on the cusp angles and angles parameterising the torsion of the contours.
We consider the correlation function of a circular Wilson loop with two local scalar operators at generic 4-positions in planar N=4 supersymmetric gauge theory. We show that such correlator is fixed by conformal invariance up to a function of 't Hooft coupling and two scalar combinations of the positions invariant under the conformal transformations preserving the circle. We compute this function at leading orders at weak and strong coupling for some simple choices of local BPS operators. We also check that correlators of an infinite line Wilson loop with local operators are the same as those …
Within the electrostatic formulation of holographic duals to (balanced) conformal quivers in five and three dimensions, we study Wilson loops in antisymmetric representations. We derive general expressions for various quantities participating in the formalism (VEV of Wilson loops, representation, gauge-node) and apply these to examples, connecting some results present in the bibliography. In the case of three dimensional quivers, we present a relation between Wilson loops in an 'electric' and in the 'magnetic/mirror' descriptions. In a very detailed appendix, we relate the electrostatic and ho…
We compute the heat kernel for the Laplacians of symmetric transverse traceless fields of arbitrary spin on the $AdS$ background in even number of dimensions using the group theoretic approach introduced in \cite{Gopakumar:2011qs} and apply it on the partition function of six dimensional conformal gravity. The obtained partition function consists of the Einstein gravity, conformal ghost and two modes that contain mass.
We study the two-loop dilatation operator in the noncompact SL(2) sector of QCD and supersymmetric Yang-Mills theories with N=1,2,4 supercharges. The analysis is performed for Wilson operators built from three quark/gaugino fields of the same helicity belonging to the fundamental/adjoint representation of the SU(3)/SU(N_c) gauge group and involving an arbitrary number of covariant derivatives projected onto the light-cone. To one-loop order, the dilatation operator inherits the conformal symmetry of the classical theory and is given in the multi-color limit by a local Hamiltonian of the Heisen…
We compute the conformal anomalies of boundary CFTs for scalar and fermionic fields propagating in AdS spacetime at one-loop. The coefficients are quantized, with values related to the mass-spectra for Kaluza-Klein compactifications of Supergravity on AdS5xS5 and AdS7xS4. Our approach interprets the boundary partition function of fields propagating on AdS spacetime in terms of wave-functionals that satisfy the functional Schrodinger equation.
Classically supersymmetric Wilson loop on a null polygonal contour possesses all symmetries required to match it onto non-MHV amplitudes in maximally supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory. However, to define it quantum mechanically, one is forced to regularize it since perturbative loop diagrams are not well-defined due to presence of ultraviolet divergences stemming from integration in the vicinity of the cusps. A regularization that is adopted by practitioners by allowing one to use spinor helicity formalism, on the one hand, and systematically go to higher orders of perturbation theory is based …
Motivated by the analogy proposed by Witten between Chern-Simons and Conformal Field Theories, we explore an alternative way of computing the entropy of a black hole starting from the isolated horizon framework in Loop Quantum Gravity. The consistency of the result opens a window for the interplay between Conformal Field Theory and the description of black holes in Loop Quantum Gravity.
We evaluate the 1-loop partition function of conformal gravity in four dimensions around an $AdS_4$ background, using the heat kernel techniques. We give expressions for the relevant thermodynamical quantities and compare our results with the ones from the literature.
We consider super Yang-Mills Theory in $N=1$ conformal supergravity. Using the background field method and the Feddeev-Popov procedure, the quantized action of the theory is presented. Its one-loop effective action is studied using the heat kernel method. We shall develop a non-iterative scheme, generalizing the non-supersymmetric case, to obtain the super heat kernel coefficients. In particular, the first three coefficients, which govern the one-loop divergence, will be calculated. We shall also demonstrate how to schematically derive the higher order coefficients. The method presented here c…
The method of calculation of $\varepsilon$-expansion in model of scalar field with $φ^3$-interaction based on conformal bootstrap equations is proposed. This technique is based on self-consistent skeleton equations involving full propagator and full triple vertex. Analytical computations of the Fisher's index $η$ are performed in four-loop approximation. The three-loop result coincides with one obtained previously by the renormalization group equations technique based on calculation of a larger number of Feynman diagrams. The four-loop result agrees with its numerical value obtained by other a…
We analyse the breaking of conformal invariance for null polygonal Wilson loops in ${\cal N}=4$ SYM beyond that induced by the UV divergences due to the cusps. It only shows up in exceptional configurations, where the polygon intersects the critical light cone of an inversion or a special conformal transformation. In comparison with the related study for the Euclidean version by Drukker and Gross, we find different leading terms both for weak as well as for strong coupling. Hence the conformal anomaly due to intersections of a null polygon with a critical light cone defines a new universal fun…
We compute the one-loop beta function for the Type II superstring using the pure spinor formalism in a generic supergravity background. It is known that the classical pure spinor BRST symmetry puts the background fields on-shell. In this paper we show that the one-loop beta functions vanish as a consequence of the classical BRST symmetry of the action.
The dynamics with an infrared stable fixed point in the conformal window in QCD like theories with a relatively large number of fermion flavors is reviewed. The emphasis is on the description of a clear signature for the conformal window, which in particular can be useful for lattice computer simulations of these gauge theories.
We study four-dimensional gauge theories coupled to fermions in the fundamental and meson-like scalars. All requisite beta functions are provided for general gauge group and fermion representation. In the regime where asymptotic freedom is absent, we determine all interacting fixed points using perturbation theory up to three loop in the gauge and two loop in the Yukawa and quartic couplings. We find that the conformal window of ultraviolet fixed points is narrowed-down by finite-$N$ corrections beyond the Veneziano limit. We also find a new infrared fixed point whose main features such as sca…
We evaluate a four-loop conformal integral, i.e. an integral over four four-dimensional coordinates, by turning to its dimensionally regularized version and applying differential equations for the set of the corresponding 213 master integrals. To solve these linear differential equations we follow the strategy suggested by Henn and switch to a uniformly transcendental basis of master integrals. We find a solution to these equations up to weight eight in terms of multiple polylogarithms. Further, we present an analytical result for the given four-loop conformal integral considered in four-dimen…
In this note we compute the expectation value of a circular BPS Wilson loop in the higher rank totally symmetric and antisymmetric representations of SU(N) in the $\hat{A}_1$ quiver $\mathcal{N} = 2$ SCFT, using a matrix model. We discuss the connection with a recent conjecture stating that expectation values of observables in this sector are obtained from $\mathcal{N = 4}$ SYM by a universal renormalization of the `t Hooft coupling.
In this talk we show that dual conformal symmetry has unexpected applications to Feynman integrals in dimensional regularization. Outside $4$ dimensions, the symmetry is anomalous, but still preserves the unitarity cut surfaces. This generally leads to differential equations whose RHS is proportional to $(d-4)$ and has no doubled propagators. The stabilizer subgroup of the conformal group leads to integration-by-parts (IBP) relations without doubled propagators. The above picture also suggested hints that led us to find a nonplanar analog of dual conformal symmetry.
In this paper we consider matter fields in a gravitational background in order to compute the breaking of the conformal current at one-loop order. Standard perturbative calculations of conformal symmetry breaking expressed by the non-zero trace of the energy-momentum tensor have shown that some violating terms are regularization dependent, which may suggest the existence of spurious breaking terms in the anomaly. Therefore, we perform the calculation in a momentum space regularization framework in which regularization dependent terms are judiciously parametrized. We compare our results with th…
In this thesis we consider four dimensional N=2 superconformal field theories, in presence of line defects such as Wilson loops. In this set up, using supersymmetric localization, we compute many observables, such as the vacuum expectation value of the Wilson loop, correlation functions with chiral operators and the emitted radiation of the charged particle moving along the Wilson loop trajectory. These results are achieved by exploiting the localized matrix model on a four sphere, and checked against a perturbative computation on the flat space in N=1 superspace formalism, up to four loops in…
This short note is some obvious mathematical addendum to our papers on Wilson loops on polygon-like contours with circular edges \cite{Dorn:2020meb,Dorn:2020vzj}. Using the technique of osculating spheres and circles we identify the conformal invariants characterising the kinks (cusps) of generic piecewise smooth curves in 3-dimensional space.
An analysis of the structure and singularities of the one loop two point function of the higher spin traceless and conserved currents constructed from the single scalar field in $AdS$ space is presented. The detailed renormalization procedure is constructed and the quantum violation of the traceless Ward identity is investigated. The connection with the one loop effective action for higher spin gauge fields is discussed.
Using the superconformal (SC) indices techniques, we construct Seiberg type dualities for $\mathcal{N}=1$ supersymmetric field theories outside the conformal windows. These theories are physically distinguished by the presence of chiral superfields with small or negative $R$-charges.
This is a review of results obtained by the author concerning the relation between conformally invariant random loops and conformal field theory. This review also attempts to provide a physical context in which to interpret these results by making connections with aspects of the nucleation theory of phase transitions and with general properties of criticality.
We emphasize that non-conformal theories provide a natural playground for the ideas of the Maldacena conjecture, opening the possibility of exploring properties that could potentially be in the same universality class as QCD. In particular, we discuss in detail how light-like Wilson loops, an important ingredient in the prescription for scattering amplitudes, can be described in a number of gravity duals of non-conformal gauge theories. We point out to a few universal properties and the prominent role of the strong scale.
Recently, it was shown by Jevicki, Kazama and Yoneya (JKY) that the Super-Yang-Mills theories (SYM) in $D\leq 4$ can reproduce the conformal symmetry of the near-horizon geometry of the D-brane solutions. However, the eikonal approximation they used is not sufficient for analyzing the conformal symmetry in SYM. We carry out the 1-loop calculation beyond the eikonal approximation for D=1 SYM (i.e., Matrix model) to confirm the claim of JKY.
New algebraic approach to analytical calculations of D-dimensional integrals for multi-loop Feynman diagrams is proposed. We show that the known analytical methods of evaluation of multi-loop Feynman integrals, such as integration by parts and star-triangle relation methods, can be drastically simplified by using this algebraic approach. To demonstrate the advantages of the algebraic method of analytical evaluation of multi-loop Feynman diagrams, we calculate ladder diagrams for the massless $ϕ^3$ theory. Using our algebraic approach we show that the problem of evaluation of special classes of…
Using Exact Renormalization Group Equation approach and background field method, we investigate the one-loop problem in a six-dimensional conformal gravity theory whose Lagrangian takes the same form as holographic Weyl anomaly of multiple coincident M5-branes. We choose the backgrounds to be the symmetric Einstein spaces including S6, CP3, S2 \times S4, S2 \times CP2, S3 \times S3 and S2 \times S2 \times S2. Evaluating the functional sums gives power-law and logarithmic divergences. We extract from the specific values of logarithmic divergence on above backgrounds, the coefficient in front of…
We construct a centerless W-infinity type of algebra in terms of a generator of a centerless Virasoro algebra and an abelian spin-1 current. This algebra conventionally emerges in the study of pseudo-differential operators on a circle or alternatively within KP hierarchy with Watanabe's bracket. Construction used here is based on a special deformation of the algebra $w_{\infty}$ of area preserving diffeomorphisms of a 2-manifold. We show that this deformation technique applies to the two-loop WZNW and conformal affine Toda models, establishing henceforth $W_{\infty}$ invariance of these models…
We compute the conformal blocks of the Virasoro minimal model or its W$_N$ extension with large central charge from Wilson line networks in a Chern-Simons theory including loop corrections. In our previous work, we offered a prescription to regularize divergences from loops attached to Wilson lines. In this paper, we generalize our method with the prescription by dealing with more general operators for $N=3$ and apply it to the identity W$_3$ block. We further compute general light-light blocks and heavy-light correlators for $N=2$ with the Wilson line method and compare the results with known…
We investigate the ultraviolet and infrared fixed point structure of gauge-Yukawa theories featuring a single gauge coupling, Yukawa coupling and scalar self coupling. Our investigations are performed using the two loop gauge beta function, one loop Yukawa beta function and one loop scalar beta function. We provide the general conditions that the beta function coefficients must abide for the theory to be completely asymptotically free while simultaneously possessing an infrared stable fixed point. We also uncover special trajectories in coupling space along which some couplings are both asympt…
We consider conformal N=2 super Yang-Mills theories with gauge group SU(N) and Nf=2N fundamental hypermultiplets in presence of a circular 1/2-BPS Wilson loop. It is natural to conjecture that the matrix model which describes the expectation value of this system also encodes the one-point functions of chiral scalar operators in presence of the Wilson loop. We obtain evidence of this conjecture by successfully comparing, at finite N and at the two-loop order, the one-point functions computed in field theory with the vacuum expectation values of the corresponding normal-ordered operators in the …
We revisit the familiar construction of one-loop scattering amplitudes via generalized unitarity in light of the recently understood properties of loop integrands prior to their integration. We show how in any four-dimensional quantum field theory, the integrand-level factorization of infrared divergences leads to twice as many constraints on integral coefficients than are visible from the integrated expressions. In the case of planar, maximally supersymmetric Yang-Mills amplitudes, we demonstrate that these constraints are both sufficient and necessary to imply the finiteness and dual-conform…
We construct new large classes of BPS Wilson hyperloops in three-dimensional ${\cal N}=4$ quiver Chern-Simons-matter theory on $S^3$. The main strategy is to start with the 1/2 BPS Wilson loop of this theory, choose any linear combination of the supercharges it preserves, and look for deformations built out of the matter fields that still preserve that supercharge. This is a powerful generalization of a recently developed approach based on deformations of 1/4 and 1/8 BPS bosonic loops, which itself was far more effective at discovering new operators than older methods relying on complicated an…
We define and study a set of operators that compute statistical properties of the Brownian Loop Soup, a conformally invariant gas of random Brownian loops (Brownian paths constrained to begin and end at the same point) in two dimensions. We prove that the correlation functions of these operators have many of the properties of conformal primaries in a conformal field theory, and compute their conformal dimension. The dimensions are real and positive, but have the novel feature that they vary continuously as a periodic function of a real parameter. We comment on the relation of the Brownian Loop…
The computational technique of $N$-fold Mellin-Barnes (MB) integrals, presented in a companion paper by the same authors, is used to derive sets of series representations of the massive one-loop conformal 3-point Feynman integral in various configurations. This shows the great simplicity and efficiency of the method in nonresonant cases (generic propagator powers) as well as some of its subtleties in the resonant ones (for unit propagator powers). We confirm certain results in the physics and mathematics literature and provide many new results, some of them dealing with the more general massiv…
We consider a full Leigh-Strassler deformation of the ${\cal N}=4$ SYM theory and look for conditions under which the theory would be conformally invariant and finite. Applying the algorithm of perturbative adjustments of the couplings we construct a family of theories which are conformal up to 3 loops in the non-planar case and up to 4 loops in the planar one. We found particular solutions in the planar case when the conformal condition seems to be exhausted in the one loop order. Some of them happen to be unitary equivalent to the real beta-deformed ${\cal N}=4$ SYM theory, while others are …
We employ a fully renormalized computation of the one loop contribution to the self-mass-squared of the conformally coupled (CC) scalar interacting with gravitons during inflation to study how inflationary produced gravitons affect the CC scalar evolution equation. The quantum corrected scalar mode functions turn out to get a secular growth effect, proportional to a logarithm of the scale factor at late times.
