A space $X$ is said to be $π$-metrizable if it has a $σ$-discrete $π$-base. In this paper, we mainly give affirmative answers for two questions about $π$-metrizable spaces. The main results are that: (1) A space $X$ is $π$-metrizable if and only if $X$ has a $σ$-hereditarily closure-preserving $π$-base; (2) $X$ is $π$-metrizable if and only if $X$ is almost $σ$-paracompact and locally $π$-metrizable; (3) Open and closed maps preserve $π$-metrizability; (4) $π$-metrizability satisfies hereditarily closure-preserving regular closed sum theorems. Moreover, we define the notions of second-countable $π$-metrizable and strongly $π$-metrizable spaces, and study some related questions. Some questions about strongly $π$-metrizability are posed.
A topological space $X$ is called strongly $σ$-metrizable if $X=\bigcup_{n\inω}X_n$ for an increasing sequence $(X_n)_{n\inω}$ of closed metrizable subspaces such that every convergence sequence in $X$ is contained in some $X_n$. If, in addition, every compact subset of $X$ is contained in some $X_n$, $n\inω$, then $X$ is called super $σ$-metrizable. Answering a question of V.K.Maslyuchenko and O.I.Filipchuk, we prove that a topological space is strongly $σ$-metrizable if and only if it is super $σ$-metrizable.
On generalization of the Freudental's theorem for compact irreducible standard polyhedric representation for superparacompact complete metrizable spaces
We introduce a new class of $\varkappa$-metrizable spaces, namely countably $\varkappa$-metrizable spaces. We show that the class of all $\varkappa$-metrizable spaces is a proper subclass of counably $\varkappa$-metrizable spaces. On the other hand, for pseudocompact spaces the new class coincides with $\varkappa$-metrizable spaces. We prove a generalization of a Chigogidze result that the Čech-Stone compactification of a pseudocompact countably $\varkappa$-metrizable space is $\varkappa$-metrizable.
We show in ZF that: (i) Every subcompact metrizable space is completely metrizable, and every completely metrizable space is countably subcompact. (ii) A metrizable space X=(X,T) is countably compact iff it is countably subcompact relative to T. (iii) For every metric space X=(X,d), X is compact iff it is subcompact relative to T. We also show: (iv) The negation of each of the statements, (a) every countably subcompact metrizable space is completely metrizable, (b) every countably subcompact metrizable space is subcompact, (c) every complete metrizable space is subcompact is relatively consist…
The aim of this paper is to investigate the class of quasi $κ$-metrizable spaces. This class is invariant with respect to arbitrary products and contains Shchepin's $κ$-metrizable spaces as a proper subclass.
We introduced the concept of a metric value set (MVS) in an earlier paper \cite{GM} and developed the idea further in \cite{AS}. In this paper we study locally $M$-metrizable spaces and the products of $M$-metrizable spaces. Finally we prove a characterization of commutatively metrizable topological spaces by means of the bases of a quasiuniformity.
Let $f \colon X \rightarrow Y$ be a resolvable-measurable mapping of a metrizable space $X$ to a regular space $Y$. Then $f$ is piecewise continuous. Additionally, for a metrizable completely Baire space $X$, it is proved that $f$ is resolvable-measurable if and only if it is piecewise continuous.
We investigate the possibility of extension of $F_σ$-measurable and Baire-one maps from subspaces of topological spaces when these maps take values in spaces which covers by a sequence of metrizable spaces with special properties
We characterize coset spaces of topological groups which are coset spaces of (separable) metrizable groups and complete metrizable (Polish) groups. Besides, it is shown that for a $G$-space $X$ with a $d$-open action there is a topological group $H$ of weight and cardinality less than or equal to the weight of $X$ such that $H$ admits a $d$-open action on $X$. This is further applied to show that if $X$ is a separable metrizable coset space then $X$ has a Polish extension which is a coset space of a Polish group.
We answer a question of Piotr Minc by proving that there is no compact metrizable space whose set of components contains a unique topological copy of every metrizable compactification of a ray (i.e. a half-open interval) with an arc (i.e. closed bounded interval) as the remainder. To this end we use the concept of Borel reductions coming from Invariant descriptive set theory. It follows as a corollary that there is no compact metrizable space such that every continuum is homeomorphic to exactly one component of this space.
The main aim of the article is to show, in the absence of the Axiom of Choice, relationships between the following, independent of $\mathbf{ZF}$, statements: "Every countable product of compact metrizable spaces is separable (respectively, compact)" and "Every countable product of compact metrizable spaces is metrizable". Statements related to the above-mentioned ones are also studied. Permutation models (among them new ones) are shown in which a countable sum (also a countable product) of metrizable spaces need not be metrizable, countable unions of countable sets are countable and there is a…
We try to explain the differences between the concepts of stratifiable space and $\varkappa$-metrizable space. In particular, we give a characterization of $\varkappa$-metrizable spaces which is modelled on Chigogidze's characterization. Moreover, we present a $\varkappa$-metric for the Niemytzki plane, using the properties of the Euclidean metric.
It is obtained necessary and sufficient conditions of dependence on $\aleph$ coordinates for functions of several variables, each of which is a product of metrizable factors. The set of discontinuity points of such functions is characterized in the case, when each variable is a product of separable metrizable spaces.
A cuf space (set, resp.) is a space (set, resp.) which is a countable union of finite subspaces (subsets, resp.). It is proved in $\mathbf{ZF}$ (with the absence of the axiom of choice) that all countable unions of cuf (denumerable, resp.) sets are cuf sets iff all countable products of cofinite cuf (denumerable, resp.) spaces are quasi-metrizable iff all countable products of one-point Hausdorff compactifications of infinite cuf (denumerable, resp.) spaces are quasi-metrizable. A countable product of one-point Hausdorff compactifications of denumerable discrete spaces is first-countable iff i…
A Lambda (Card Lambda > aleph)-product space of {0,1} has a partition {X1,...,Xn} for any n a decomposition space of each Xi of which is self-similar.(February 16, 2015)
It is proved that for an h-homogeneous space X the following conditions are equivalent: 1) X is a densely homogeneous space with a dense complete subspace; 2) X is $σ$-discretely controlled.
We introduce the notion of compactifiable classes -- these are classes of metrizable compact spaces that can be up to homeomorphic copies ``disjointly combined'' into one metrizable compact space. This is witnessed by so-called compact composition of the class. Analogously, we consider Polishable classes and Polish compositions. The question of compactifiability or Polishability of a class is related to hyperspaces. Strongly compactifiable and strongly Polishable classes may be characterized by the existence of a corresponding family in the hyperspace of all metrizable compacta. We systematica…
It is shown that a set in product of $n$ metrizable spaces is the discontinuity points set of some separately continuous function if and only if this set can be represented as the union of a sequence of $F_σ$-sets which are locally projectively meager.
Let $P$ be a directed set and $X$ a space. A collection $\mathcal{C}$ of subsets of $X$ is \emph{$P$-locally finite} if $\mathcal{C}=\bigcup \{ \mathcal{C}_p : p \in P\}$ where (i) if $p \le p'$ then $\mathcal{C}_p \subseteq \mathcal{C}_{p'}$ and (ii) each $\mathcal{C}_p$ is locally finite. Then $X$ is \emph{$P$-paracompact} if every open cover has a $P$-locally finite open refinement. Further, $X$ is \emph{$P$-metrizable} if it has a $(P \times \mathbb{N})$-locally finite base. This work provides the first detailed study of $P$-paracompact and $P$-metrizable spaces, particularly in the case w…
Let ${\rm Fin}(X)$ be the hyperspace consisting of non-empty finite subsets of a space $X$ endowed with the Vietoris topology. In this paper, we characterize a metrizable space $X$ whose hyperspace ${\rm Fin}(X)$ is homeomorphic to the linear subspace spanned by the canonical orthonormal basis of a non-separable Hilbert space.
Let $F(X)$ be the free topological group on a Tychonoff space $X$. For all natural numbers $n$ we denote by $F_n(X)$ the subset of $F(X)$ consisting of all words of reduced length $\leq n$. In \cite{Y3}, the author found equivalent conditions on a metrizable space $X$ for $F_3(X)$ to be Fréchet-Urysohn, and for $F_n(X)$ to be Fréchet-Urysohn for $n\geq5$. However, no equivalent condition on $X$ for $n=4$ was found. In this paper, we give the equivalent condition. In fact, we show that for a metrizable space $X$, if the set of all non-isolated points of $X$ is compact, then $F_4(X)$ is Fréchet-…
In this note we prove that a regular continuous open image of the Sorgenfrey line with an uncountable weight has a closed subspace that is homeomorphic to the Sorgenfrey line. As a corollary we deduce the theorem in the title.
Denote by $\mathbf C_k[\mathfrak M]$ the $C_k$-stable closure of the class $\mathfrak M$ of all metrizable spaces, i.e., $\mathbf C_k[\mathfrak M]$ is the smallest class of topological spaces that contains $\mathfrak M$ and is closed under taking subspaces, homeomorphic images, countable topological sums, countable Tychonoff products, and function spaces $C_k(X,Y)$ with Lindelöf domain. We show that the class $\mathbf C_k[\mathfrak M]$ coincides with the class of all topological spaces homeomorphic to subspaces of the function spaces $C_k(X,Y)$ with a separable metrizable space $X$ and a metri…
In the absence of the axiom of choice, the set-theoretic status of many natural statements about metrizable compact spaces is investigated. Some of the statements are provable in $\mathbf{ZF}$, some are shown to be independent of $\mathbf{ZF}$. For independence results, distinct models of $\mathbf{ZF}$ and permutation models of $\mathbf{ZFA}$ with transfer theorems of Pincus are applied. New symmetric models are constructed in each of which the power set of $\mathbb{R}$ is well-orderable, the Continuum Hypothesis is satisfied but a denumerable family of non-empty finite sets can fail to have a…
We give descriptions of metrizable topological spaces that are images of the Sorgenfrey line under continuous maps of different types (open, closed, quotient and others). To obtain this descriptions, we introduce the notion of a Lusin pi-base, the Sorgenfrey line and the Baire space have Lusin pi-bases, and if a space X has a Lusin pi-base, then for each nonempty Polish space Y, there exists a continuous open map from X onto Y.
Much of the structure in metric spaces that allows for the creation of fractals exists in more generalized non-metrizable spaces. In particular the same theorems regarding the behavior of compact sets can be proven in the more general framework of $β$-spaces. However in most $β$-spaces, a set being compact (and more generally being totally bounded) is so restrictive as to render all fractal examples completely uninteresting. In this paper we provide a generalization of compact sets, continuous functions, and all the related machinery necessary for fractals to be defined as the unique fixed set…
Each continuous weak selection for a space $X$ defines a coarser topology on $X$, called a selection topology. Spaces whose topology is determined by a collection of such selection topologies are called continuous weak selection spaces. For such spaces, Garc\'ıa-Ferreira, Miyazaki, Nogura and Tomita considered the minimal number $\text{cws}(X)$ of selection topologies which generate the original topology of $X$, and called it the cws-number of $X$. In this paper, we show that $\text{cws}(X)\leq 2$ for every semi-orderable space $X$, and that $\text{cws}(X)=2$ precisely when such a space $X$ ha…
Denote by $\mathbf C_p[\mathfrak M_0]$ the $C_p$-stable closure of the class $\mathfrak M_0$ of all separable metrizable spaces, i.e., $\mathbf C_p[\mathfrak M_0]$ is the smallest class of topological spaces that contains $\mathfrak M_0$ and is closed under taking subspaces, homeomorphic images, countable topological sums, countable Tychonoff products, and function spaces $C_p(X,Y)$. Using a recent deep result of Chernikov and Shelah (2014), we prove that $\mathbf C_p[\mathfrak M_0]$ coincides with the class of all Tychonoff spaces of cardinality strictly less than $\beth_{ω_1}$. Being motivat…
We prove that every point-finite family of nonempty functionally open sets in a topological space $X$ has the cardinality at most an infinite cardinal $κ$ if and only if $w(X)\leqκ$ for every Valdivia compact space $Y\subseteq C_p(X)$. Correspondingly a Valdivia compact space $Y$ has the weight at most an infinite cardinal $κ$ if and only if every point-finite family of nonempty open sets in $C_p(Y)$ has the cardinality at most $κ$, that is $p(C_p(Y))\leq κ$. Besides, it was proved that $w(Y)=p(C_p(Y))$ for every linearly ordered compact $Y$. In particular, a Valdivia compact space or linearly…
In the absence of the axiom of choice, new results concerning sequential, Fréchet-Urysohn, $k$-spaces, very $k$-spaces, Loeb and Cantor completely metrizable spaces are shown. New choice principles are introduced. Among many other theorems, it is proved in $\mathbf{ZF}$ that every Loeb, $T_3$-space having a base expressible as a countable union of finite sets is a metrizable second-countable space whose every $F_σ$-subspace is separable; moreover, every $G_δ$-subspace of a second-countable, Cantor completely metrizable space is Cantor completely metrizable, Loeb and separable. It is also notic…
There exists a completely metrizable bounded metrizable space $X$ with compatible metrics $d,d'$ so that the hyperspace $CL(X)$ of nonempty closed subsets of $X$ endowed with the Hausdorff metric $H_d$, $H_{d'}$, resp. is $α$-favorable, $β$-favorable, resp. in the strong Choquet game. In particular, there exists a completely metrizable bounded metric space $(X,d)$ such that $(CL(X),H_d)$ is not completely metrizable.
For a separable locally compact but not compact metrizable space $X$, let $αX = X \cup \{x_\infty\}$ be the one-point compactification with the point at infinity $x_\infty$. We denote by $EM(X)$ the space consisting of admissible metrics on $X$, which can be extended to an admissible metric on $αX$, endowed with the compact-open topology. Let $ \mathbf{c}_0 \subset (0,1)^\mathbb{N}$ be the space of sequences converging to $0$. In this paper, we shall show that if $X$ is separable, locally connected and locally compact but not compact, and there exists a sequence $\{C_i\}$ of connected sets in …
Quotient space is a class of the most important topological spaces in the research of topology. In this paper, we show that if G is a strongly topological gyrogroup with a symmetric neighborhood base U at 0 and H is an admissible subgyrogroup generated from U , then G/H is first-countable if and only if it is metrizable. Moreover, if H is neutral and G/H is Frechet-Urysohn with an ωω-base, then G/H is first-countable. Therefore, we obtain that if H is neutral, then G/H is metrizable if and only if G/H is Frechet-Urysohn with an ωω-base. Finally, it is shown that if H is neutral, π\c{hi}(G/H) =…
Given a dynamical system $(X,f)$, we let $E(X,f)$ denote its Ellis semigroup and $E(X,f)^* = E(X,f) \setminus \{f^n : n \in \mathbb{N}\}$. We analyze the Ellis semigroup of a dynamical system having a compact metric countable space as a phase space. We show that if $(X,f)$ is a dynamical system such that $X$ is a compact metric countable space and every accumulation point $X'$ is periodic, then either each function of $E(X,f)^*$ is continuous or each function of $E(X,f)^*$ is discontinuous. We describe an example of a dynamical system $(X,f)$ where $X$ is a compact metric countable space, the …
Clearly, a generalized inverse limit of metrizable spaces indexed by $\mathbb N$ is metrizable, as it is a subspace of a countable product of metrizable spaces. The authors previously showed that all idempotent, upper semi-continuous, surjective, continuum-valued bonding functions on $[0,1]$ (besides the identity) satisfy a certain Condition $Γ$; it follows that only in trivial cases can a generalized inverse limit of copies of ([0,1]) indexed by an uncountable ordinal be metrizable. The authors show that Condition $Γ$ is in fact guaranteed by much weaker criteria, proving a more general metri…
We provide a machinery for transferring some properties of metrizable $ANR$-spaces to metrizable $LC^n$-spaces. As a result, we show that for complete metrizable spaces the properties $ALC^n$, $LC^n$ and $WLC^n$ coincide to each other. We also provide the following spectral characterizations of $ALC^n$ and cell-like compacta: A compactum $X$ is $ALC^n$ if and only if $X$ is the limit space of a $σ$-complete inverse system $S=\{X_α, p^β_α, α<β<τ\}$ consisting of compact metrizable $LC^n$-spaces $X_α$ such that all bonding projections $p^β_α$, as a well all limit projections $p_α$, are $UV^n$-ma…
Hurewicz proved completely metrizable Menger spaces are /sigma-compact. We extend this to Cech-complete Menger spaces and consistently to projective Menger metrizable spaces. On the other hand, it is consistent that there is a co-analytic Menger space that is not /sigma-compact.
Given a Tychonoff space $X$, let $A(X)$ be the free Abelian topological group over $X$ in the sense of Markov. For every $n\in\mathbb{N}$, let $A_n(X)$ denote the subspace of $A(X)$ that consists of words of reduced length at most $n$ with respect to the free basis $X$. In this paper, we show that $A_4(X)$ is a $k$-space if and only if $A(X)$ is a $k$-space for the non-metrizable Lašnev space $X$, which gives a complementary for one result of K. Yamada's. In addition, we also show that, under the assumption of $\flat=ω_1$, the subspace $A_3(X)$ is a $k$-space if and only if $A(X)$ is a $k$-spa…
The concept of the strong Pytkeev property, recently introduced by Tsaban and Zdomskyy in [32], was successfully applied to the study of the space $C_c(X)$ of all continuous real-valued functions with the compact-open topology on some classes of topological spaces $X$ including Čech-complete Lindelöf spaces. Being motivated also by several results providing various concepts of networks we introduce the class of $\mathfrak{P}$-spaces strictly included in the class of $\aleph$-spaces. This class of generalized metric spaces is closed under taking subspaces, topological sums and countable product…
In the absence of the Axiom of Choice, necessary and sufficient conditions for a locally compact Hausdorff space to have all non-empty second-countable compact Hausdorff spaces as remainders are given in $\mathbf{ZF}$. Among other independence results, the characterization of locally compact Hausdorff spaces having all non-empty metrizable compact spaces as remainders, obtained by Hatzenhuhler and Mattson in $\mathbf{ZFC}$, is proved to be independent of $\mathbf{ZF}$. Urysohn's Metrization Theorem is generalized to the following theorem: every $T_3$-space which admits a base expressible as a …
