Universal metric spaces and extension dimension

For any countable $CW$-complex $K$ and a cardinal number $τ\geqω$ we construct a completely metrizable space $X(K,τ)$ of weight $τ$ with the following properties: $\e X(K,τ)\leq K$, $X(K,τ)$ is an absolute extensor for all normal spaces $Y$ with $\e Y\leq K$, and for any completely metrizable space $Z$ of weight $\leqτ$ and $\e Z\leq K$ the set of closed embeddings $Z\to X(K,τ)$ is dense in the space $C(Z,X(K,τ))$ of all continuous maps from $Z$ into $X(K,τ)$ endowed with the limitation topology. This result is applied to prove the existence of universal spaces for all metrizable spaces of given weight and with a given cohomological dimension.

Topological semigroups and universal spaces related to extension dimension

It is proved that there is no structure of left (right) cancelative semigroup on $[L]$-dimensional universal space for the class of separable compact spaces of extensional dimension $\le [L]$. Besides, we note that the homeomorphism group of $[L]$-dimensional space whose nonempty open sets are universal for the class of separable compact spaces of extensional dimension $\le [L]$ is totally disconnected.

The Urysohn universal metric space is homeomorphic to a Hilbert space

The Urysohn universal metric space U is characterized up to isometry by the following properties: (1) U is complete and separable; (2) U contains an isometric copy of every separable metric space; (3) every isometry between two finite subsets of U can be extended to an isometry of U onto itself. We show that U is homeomorphic to the Hilbert space l_2 (or to the countable power of the real line).

Universally uniformly continuous metric spaces

We answer the question: "on which metric spaces $(M,d)$ are all continuous functions uniformly continuous?" Our characterization theorem improves and generalizes a previous result due to Levine and Saunders, and in particular is applicable to metric spaces which are "infinite dimensional."

On simultaneous linear extensions of partial (pseudo)metrics

We consider the question of simultaneous extension of (pseudo)metrics defined on nonempty closed subsets of a compact metrizable space. The main result is a counterpart of the result due to Künzi and Shapiro for the case of extension operators of partial continuous functions and includes, as a special case, Banakh's theorem on linear regular operators extending (pseudo)metrics.

Universal and ultrahomogeneous abelian Polish metric group

We use Fra\" iss\' e theoretic methods to construct a universal and ultrahomogeneous abelian separable metric group. We show that such a group is a universal abelian Polish group, thus we provide another proof of a result already discovered by Shkarin. We then construct universal and ultrahomogeneous abelian periodic metric groups with bounded exponents; it follows that these groups are also universal objects for the corresponding classes of abelian Polish groups.

Simultaneous extensions of metrics and ultrametrics of high power

In this paper, generalized metrics mean metrics taking values in general linearly ordered Abelian groups. An embedding, an extension, and an interpolation of ultrametrics

The notion of the ultrametrics can be considered as a zero-dimensional analogue of ordinary metrics, and it is expected to prove ultrametric versions of theorems on metric spaces. In this paper, we provide ultrametric versions of the Arens--Eells isometric embedding theorem of metric spaces, the Hausdorff extension theorem of metrics, the Niemytzki--Tychonoff characterization theorem of the compactness, and the author's interpolation theorem of metrics and theorems on dense subsets of spaces of metrics.

Metrical universality for groups

We prove that for any constant $K>0$ there exists a separable group equipped with a complete bi-invariant metric bounded by $K$, isometric to the Urysohn sphere of diameter $K$, that is of `almost-universal disposition'. Universal actions and representations of locally finite groups on metric spaces

We construct a universal action of a countable locally finite group (the Hall's group) on a separable metric space by isometries. This single action contains all actions of all countable locally finite groups on all separable metric spaces as subactions. The main ingredient is the amalgamation of actions by isometries. We show that an equivalence class of this universal action is generic.
