We introduce a generalized trace functional TR in the spirit of Kontsevich and Vishik's canonical trace for classical SG-pseudodifferential operators on R^n and suitable manifolds, using a finite-part integral regularization technique. This allows us to define a zeta-regularized determinant det A for classical parameter-elliptic SG-operators A of order (μ,m), with μ>0, m\ge0. For m=0, the asymptotics of TR exp(-tA) as t\to 0 and of TR (λ-A)^{-k}$ as |λ|\to\infty are derived. For suitable pairs (A,A_0) we show that det A/det A_0 coincides with the so-called relative determinant det(A,A_0).
The L2-norm closure of the algebra of all zero-order classical (or polyhomogeneous) pseudodifferential operators on a closed manifold $X$ is proven not to contain Hörmander's class $Ψ^0(X)$. A set of generators (for that closed algebra) smaller than all zero-order classical pseudos is also described.
The purpose of this article is to establish upper and lower estimates for the integral kernel of the semigroup exp(-tP) associated to a classical, strongly elliptic pseudodifferential operator P of positive order on a closed manifold. The Poissonian bounds generalize those obtained for perturbations of fractional powers of the Laplacian. In the selfadjoint case, extensions to t in C_+ are studied. In particular, our results apply to the Dirichlet-to-Neumann semigroup.
Classically, Gohberg-type Lemmas provide lower bounds for the distance of suitable pseudodifferential operators acting in a Hilbert space to the ideal of compact operators, in terms of "the behavior of the symbol at infinity". In this article the pseudodifferential operators are associated to a compact Abelian group $X$ and an important role is played by its Pontryagin dual $\widehat X$. Hörmander-type classes of symbols are not always available; they will be replaced by crossed product $C^*$-algebras involving a vanishing oscillation condition, which anyway is more general even in the particu…
In this paper we establish explicit lower bounds for pseudodifferential operators with a radial symbol. The proofs use classical Weyl calculus techniques and some useful, if not celebrated, properties of the Laguerre polynomials.
We prove the spectral invariance of the algebra of classical pseudodifferential boundary value problems on manifolds with conical singularities in the Lp-setting. As a consequence we also obtain the spectral invariance of the classical Boutet de Monvel algebra of zero order operators with parameters. In order to establish these results, we show the equivalence of Fredholm property and ellipticity for both cases.
We report some recent results on analytic pseudodifferential operators, also known as Wick operators. An important tool in our study is the Bargmann transform which provides a coupling between the classical (real) and analytic pseudodifferential calculus. Since the Bargmann transform of Hermite functions gives rise to formal power series in the complex domain, the results are formulated in terms of the Bargmann images of Pilipović spaces.
A generalization of differential operators are pseudodifferential operators which are used for reasoning about partial differential equations with variable coefficients. A lot of useful properties about classical pseudodifferential operators are already discovered by the works of H. Kumano-Go and L. Hörmander. In this work, we like to transfer their ideas on those operators which symbols are merely Hölder-continous. We focus on the composition of operators, symbol smoothing and operators on manifolds.
Let M be a closed manifold and let CL(M) be the algebra of classical pseudodifferential operators. The aim of this note is to classify trace functionals on the subspaces CL^a(M) of CL(M) of operators of order a. CL^a(M) is a CL^0(M)-module for any real a; it is an algebra only if a is a non-positive integer. Therefore, it turns out to be useful to introduce the notions of pretrace and hypertrace. Our main result gives a complete classification of pre- and hypertraces on CL^a(M) for any real a, as well as the traces on CL^a(M) if a is a non-positive integer. We also extend these results to clas…
We produce, on general homogeneous groups, an analogue of the usual Hörmander pseudodifferential calculus on Euclidean space, at least as far as products and adjoints are concerned. In contrast to earlier works, we do not limit ourselves to analogues of classical symbols, nor to the Heisenberg group. The key technique is to understand ``multipliers'' of any given order j, and the operators of convolution with their inverse Fourier transforms, which we here call convolution operators of order j. (Here a ``multiplier'' is an analogue of a Hörmander-type symbol a(x,ξ), which is independent of x.)…
This paper deals with positivity properties for a pseudodifferential calculus, generalizing Weyl's classical quantization, and set on an infinite dimensional phase space, the Wiener space. In this frame, we show that a positive symbol does not, in general, give a positive operator. In order to measure the nonpositivity, we establish a Gårding's inequality, which holds for the symbol classes at hand. Nevertheless, for symbols with radial aspects, additional assumptions ensure the positivity of the associated operator.
Let M be a closed manifold. We show that the Kontsevich-Vishik trace, which is defined on the set of all classical pseudodifferential operators on M, whose (complex) order is not an integer greater than or equal to -dim M, is the unique functional which (i) is linear on its domain, (ii) has the trace property and (iii) coincides with the L^2-operator trace on trace class operators. Also the extension to even-even pseudodifferential operators of arbitrary integer order on odd-dimensional manifolds and to even-odd pseudodifferential operators of arbitrary integer order on even-dimensional manifo…
We consider toroidal pseudodifferential operators with operator-valued symbols, their mapping properties and the generation of analytic semigroups on vector-valued Besov and Sobolev spaces. We show that a parabolic toroiodal pseudodifferential operator generates an analytic semigroup both on Banach space-valued Besov spaces and on Banach space-valued Sobolev spaces. Here, no condition on the Banach space is imposed. For the proof of the Sobolev space result, we establish a uniform estimate on the kernel which is given as an infinite parameter-dependent sum. An application to abstract non-auton…
We define a noncommutative residue for classical Euclidean pseudodifferential operators on a torus of arbitrary dimension. We prove that, up to multiplication by a constant, it is the unique trace on the algebra of classical pseudodifferential operators modulo infinitely smoothing operators. In the case of the two torus, we show that the noncommutative residue is the semiclassical limit of a noncommutative residue defined on classical pseudodifferential operators on noncommutative two tori.
We characterize microlocal regularity of Colombeau generalized functions by an appropriate extension of the classical notion of micro-ellipticity to pseudodifferential operators with slow scale generalized symbols. Thus we obtain an alternative, yet equivalent, way to determine generalized wave front sets, which is analogous to the original definition of the wave front set of distributions via intersections over characteristic sets. The new methods are then applied to regularity theory of generalized solutions of (pseudo-)differential equations, where we extend the general noncharacteristic re…
A classical pseudodifferential operator $P$ on $R^n$ satisfies the $μ$-transmission condition relative to a smooth open subset $Ω$, when the symbol terms have a certain twisted parity on the normal to $\partialΩ$. As shown recently by the author, the condition assures solvability of Dirichlet-type boundary problems for elliptic $P$ in full scales of Sobolev spaces with a singularity $d^{μ-k}$, $d(x)=\operatorname{dist}(x,\partialΩ)$. Examples include fractional Laplacians $(-Δ)^a$ and complex powers of strongly elliptic PDE. We now introduce new boundary conditions, of Neumann type or more gen…
Let $P$ be a classical pseudodifferential operator of complex order $m$ on an $n$-dimensional smooth manifold $Ω_1$. For the truncation $P_Ω$ to a smooth subset $Ω$ there is a well-known theory of boundary value problems when $P_Ω$ has the transmission property (preserves $C^\infty (\barΩ)$) and is of integer order; the calculus of Boutet de Monvel. Many interesting operators, such as for example complex powers of the Laplacian $(-Δ)^μ$ with noninteger mu, are not covered. They have instead the mu-transmission property defined in Hörmander's books, mapping $x_n^μC^\infty (\barΩ)$ into $C^\inft…
In this paper we obtain new estimates for bilinear pseudodifferential operators with symbol in the class $BS_{1,1}^m$, when both arguments belong to Triebel-Lizorkin spaces of the type $F_{p,q}^{n/p}(\mathbb{R}^n)$. The inequalities are obtained as a consequence of a refinement of the classical Sobolev embedding $F^{n/p}_{p,q}(\mathbb{R}^n)\hookrightarrow\mathrm{bmo}(\mathbb{R}^n)$, where we replace $\mathrm{bmo}(\mathbb{R}^n)$ by an appropriate subspace which contains $L^\infty(\mathbb{R}^n)$. As an application, we study the product of functions on $F_{p,q}^{n/p}(\mathbb{R}^n)$ when $1<p<\inf…
The aim of this paper is to show that various known characterizations of traces on classical pseudodifferentials operators (PsiDOs) can actually be obtained by very elementary considerations on PsiDOs, using only basic properties of these operators. Thereby, we give a unified treatment of the determinations of the space of traces (i) on PsiDOs of noninteger orders or of regular parity-class, (ii) on integer order PsiDOs, (iii) on nonpositive order PsiDOs in dimension greather than or equal to 2, and (iv) on nonpositive order PsiDOs in dimension 1.
Let $Γ$ be a compact group acting on a smooth, compact manifold $M$, let $P \in ψ^m(M; E_0, E_1)$ be a $Γ$-invariant, classical pseudodifferential operator acting between sections of two equivariant vector bundles $E_i \to M$, $i = 0,1$, and let $α$ be an irreducible representation of the group $Γ$. Then $P$ induces a map $π_α(P) : H^s(M; E_0)_α\to H^{s-m}(M; E_1)_α$ between the $α$-isotypical components of the corresponding Sobolev spaces of sections. When $Γ$ is finite, we explicitly characterize the operators $P$ for which the map $π_α(P)$ is Fredholm in terms of the principal symbol of $P$…

In this paper we consider the linear, time dependent quantum Harmonic Schrödinger equation $i \partial_t u= \frac{1}{2} ( - \partial_x^2 + x^2) u + V(t, x, D)u$, $x \in \mathbb R$, where $V(t,x,D)$ is classical pseudodifferential operator of order 0, selfadjoint, and $2π$ periodic in time. We give sufficient conditions on the principal symbol of $V(t,x,D)$ ensuring the existence of weakly turbulent solutions displaying infinite time growth of Sobolev norms. These conditions are generic in the Frechet space of symbols. This shows that generic, classical pseudodifferential, $2π$-periodic perturb…
In this work we produce microlocal normal forms for pseudodifferential operators which have a Lagrangian submanifold of radial points. This answers natural questions about such operators and their associated classical dynamics. In a sequel, we will give a microlocal parametrix construction, as well as a construction of a microlocal Poisson operator, for such pseudodifferential operators.
We show that the noncommutative residue density, resp. the cut-off regularised integral are the only closed linear, resp. continuous closed linear forms on certain classes of symbols. This leads to alternative proofs of the uniqueness of the noncommutative residue, resp. the canonical trace as linear, resp. continuous linear forms on certain classes of classical pseudodifferential operators which vanish on brackets. The uniqueness of the canonical trace actually holds on classes of classical pseudodifferential with vanishing residue density which include non integer order operators in all dime…
This work is concerned with extending the results of Calder\' on and Vaillancourt proving the boundedness of Weyl pseudo differential operators Op_h^{weyl} (F) in L^2(\R^n). We state conditions under which the norm of such operators has an upper bound independent of n. To this aim, we apply a decomposition of the identity to the symbol F, thus obtaining a sum of operators of a hybrid type, each of them behaving as a Weyl operator with respect to some of the variables and as an anti-Wick operator with respect to the other ones. Then we establish upper bounds for these auxiliary operators, using…
In previous papers, a generalization of the Weyl calculus was introduced in connection with the quantization of a particle moving in $\mathbb R^n$ under the influence of a variable magnetic field $B$. It incorporates phase factors defined by $B$ and reproduces the usual Weyl calculus for B=0. In the present article we develop the classical pseudodifferential theory of this formalism for the standard symbol classes $S^m_{ρ,δ}$. Among others, we obtain properties and asymptotic developments for the magnetic symbol multiplication, existence of parametrices, boundedness and positivity results, pro…
We extend the classical regularity theorem of elliptic operators to maximally hypoelliptic differential operators. More precisely, given vector fields $X_1,\ldots,X_m$ on a smooth manifold which satisfy Hörmander's bracket generating condition, we define a principal symbol for \textit{any} linear differential operator. Our symbol takes into account the vector fields $X_i$ and their commutators. We show that for an arbitrary differential operator, its principal symbol is invertible if and only if the operator is maximally hypoelliptic. This answers affirmatively a conjecture due to Helffer and …
This is a introductory course focusing some basic notions in pseudodifferential operators ($Ψ$DOs) and microlocal analysis. We start this lecture notes with some notations and necessary preliminaries. Then the notion of symbols and $Ψ$DOs are introduced. In Chapter 3 we define the oscillatory integrals of different types. Chapter 4 is devoted to the stationary phase lemmas. One of the features of the lecture is that the stationary phase lemmas are proved for not only compactly supported functions but also for more general functions with certain order of smoothness and certain order of growth a…
For a smooth family F of admissible elliptic pseudodifferential operators with differential form coefficients associated to a geometric fibration of manifolds M--> B we show that there is a natural zeta-form z(F,s) and zeta-determinant- form det(F) in the de-Rham algebra of smooth differential forms, generalizing the classical single operator spectral zeta function and determinant. In the case where F is the curvature of a superconnection the zeta form is exact, extending to families the Atiyah-Bott-Seeley zeta function formula for the pointwise index, and equivalent to the transgression formu…
Let $G\subset Ø(n)$ be a group of isometries acting on $n$-dimensional Euclidean space $\R^n$, and ${\bf{X}}$ a bounded domain in $\R^n$ which is transformed into itself under the action of G. Consider a symmetric, classical pseudodifferential operator A_0 in $Ł^2(\R^n)$ with G-invariant Weyl symbol, and assume that it is semi-bounded from below. We show that the spectrum of the Friedrichs extension A of the operator $\mathrm{res} \circ A_0 \circ \mathrm{ext}: \CT({\bf{X}}) \to Ł^2({\bf{X}})$ is discrete, and derive asymptotics for the number $N_χ(λ)$ of eigenvalues of A less or equal $λ$ and …
Let $G\subset Ø(n)$ be a compact group of isometries acting on $n$-dimensional Euclidean space $\R^n$, and ${\bf{X}}$ a bounded domain in $\R^n$ which is transformed into itself under the action of $G$. Consider a symmetric, classical pseudodifferential operator $A_0$ in $Ł^2(\R^n)$ that commutes with the regular representation of $G$, and assume that it is elliptic on $\bf{X}$. We show that the spectrum of the Friedrichs extension $A$ of the operator $\mathrm{res} \circ A_0 \circ \mathrm{ext}: \CT({\bf{X}}) \to Ł^2({\bf{X}})$ is discrete, and using the method of the stationary phase, we deriv…
We propose an operator preconditioner for general elliptic pseudodifferential equations in a domain $Ω$, where $Ω$ is either in $\mathbb{R}^n$ or in a Riemannian manifold. For linear systems of equations arising from low-order Galerkin discretizations, we obtain condition numbers that are independent of the mesh size and of the choice of bases for test and trial functions. The basic ingredient is a classical formula by Boggio for the fractional Laplacian, which is extended analytically. In the special case of the weakly and hypersingular operators on a line segment or a screen, our approach gi…
Several examples of non-compact manifolds $M_0$ whose geometry at infinity is described by Lie algebras of vector fields $V \subset Γ(TM)$ (on a compactification of $M_0$ to a manifold with corners $M$) were studied by Melrose and his collaborators. In math.DG/0201202 and math.OA/0211305, the geometry of manifolds described by Lie algebras of vector fields -- baptised "manifolds with a Lie structure at infinity" there -- was studied from an axiomatic point of view. In this paper, we define and study the algebra $Ψ_{1,0,\VV}^\infty(M_0)$, which is an algebra of pseudodifferential operators cano…
We aim at extending the definition of the Weyl calculus to an infinite dimensional setting, by replacing the phase space $ \mathbb{R}^{2n}$ by $B^2$, where $(i,H,B)$ is an abstract Wiener space. A first approach is to generalize the integral definition using the Wigner function. The symbol is then a function defined on $B^2$ and belonging to a $L^1$ space for a gaussian measure, the Weyl operator is defined as a quadratic form on a dense subspace of $L^2(B)$. For example, the symbol can be the stochastic extension on $B^2$, in the sense of L. Gross, of a function $F$ which is continuous and bo…
In this paper, we develop a semi-classical analysis on H-type groups. We define semi-classical pseudodifferential operators, prove the boundedness of their action on square integrable functions and develop a symbolic calculus. Then, we define the semi-classical measures of bounded families of square integrable functions which consists of a pair formed by a measure defined on the product of the group and its unitary dual, and by a field of trace class positive operators acting on the Hilbert spaces of the representations. We illustrate the theory by analyzing examples, which show in particular …

The paper treats boundary value problems for the fractional Laplacian $(-Δ)^a$, $a>0$, and more generally for classical pseudodifferential operators ($ψ$do's) $P$ of order $2a$ with even symbol, applied to functions on a smooth subset $Ω$ of ${\Bbb R}^n$. There are several meaningful local boundary conditions, such as the Dirichlet and Neumann conditions $γ_k^{a-1}u=φ$, $k=0,1$, where $γ_k^{a-1}u=c_k\partial_n^k(u/d^{a-1})|_{\partialΩ}$, $d(x)=\operatorname{dist}(x,\partialΩ)$. We show a new Green's formula $$(Pu,v)_Ω-(u,P^*v)_Ω=(s_0γ_1^{a-1}u+Bγ_0^{a-1}u,γ_0^{a-1}v)_{\partialΩ}-(s_0γ_0^{a-1}u…
Metaplectic Wigner distributions were recently investigated as natural generalizations of the classical Wigner distribution, and provide a wide class of time-frequency representations that exploits the structure of the symplectic group. This work serves as a survey on metaplectic Wigner distributions and their applications to the time-frequency analysis of modulation spaces and pseudodifferential operators, topics that are all still poorly understood. We also give some new results, generalizing Lieb's uncertainty principle to the so-called matrix Wigner distributions and proving the continuity…
R. B. Melrose's b-calculus provides a framework for dealing with problems of partial differential equations that arise in singular or degenerate geometric situations. This article is a somewhat informal short course introducing many of the basic ideas of this world, assuming little more than a basic analysis and manifold background. As examples, classical pseudodifferential operators on manifolds and b-pseudodifferential (also known as totally characteristic) operators on manifolds with boundary are discussed.
We consider the generalized Radon transform (defined in terms of smooth weight functions) on hyperplanes in $\mathbb{R}^n$. We analyze general filtered backprojection type reconstruction methods for limited data with filters given by general pseudodifferential operators. We provide microlocal characterizations of visible and added singularities in $\mathbb{R}^n$ and define modified versions of reconstruction operators that do not generate added artifacts. We calculate the symbol of our general reconstruction operators as pseudodifferential operators, and provide conditions for the filters unde…
In this paper, I describe the weak limits of the measures associated to the eigenfunctions of the Laplacian on a Quantum graph for a generic metric in terms of the Gauss map of the determinant manifold. I describe also all the limits with minimal support (the "scars").
In this paper we analyze the evolution of the time averaged energy densities associated with a family of solutions to a Schr{ö}dinger equation on a Lie group of Heisenberg type. We use a semi-classical approach adapted to the stratified structure of the group and describe the semi-classical measures (also called quantum limits) that are associated with this family. This allows us to prove an Egorov's type Theorem describing the quantum evolution of a pseudodifferential semi-classical operator through the semi-group generated by a sub-Laplacian.
On the torus, it is possible to assign a global symbol to a pseudodifferential operator using Fourier series. In this paper we investigate the relations between the local and global symbols for the operators in the classical Hörmander calculus and describe the principal symbols, the non-commutative residue and the canonical trace of an operator in terms of its global symbol. We also generalise these results to any compact Lie group.
We answer the question of when an invariant pseudodifferential operator is Fredholm on a fixed, given isotypical component. More precisely, let $Γ$ be a compact group acting on a smooth, compact, manifold $M$ without boundary and let $P \in ψ^m(M; E_0, E_1)$ be a $Γ$-invariant, classical, pseudodifferential operator acting between sections of two $Γ$-equivariant vector bundles $E_0$ and $E_1$. Let $α$ be an irreducible representation of the group $Γ$. Then $P$ induces by restriction a map $π_α(P) : H^s(M; E_0)_α\to H^{s-m}(M; E_1)_α$ between the $α$-isotypical components of the corresponding S…
We consider non-selfadjoint perturbations of a self-adjoint $h$-pseudodifferential operator in dimension 2. In the present work we treat the case when the classical flow of the unperturbed part is periodic and the strength $ε$ of the perturbation satisfies $h^{δ_0} <ε\le ε_0$ for some $δ_0\in ]0,1/2[$ and a sufficiently small $ε_0>0$. We get a complete asymptotic description of all eigenvalues in certain rectangles $[-1/C,1/C]+iε[F_0-1/C,F_0+1/C]$. In particular we are able to treat the case when $ε>0$ is small but independent of $h$.
In this note we compare two recent results about the distribution of eigenvalues for semi-classical pseudodifferential operators in two dimensions. For classes of analytic operators A. Melin and the author obtained a complex Bohr-Sommerfeld rule, showing that the eigenvalues are situated on a distorted lattice. On the other hand, with M. Hager we showed in any dimension that Weyl asymptotics holds with probability close to 1 for small random perturbations of the operator. In both cases the eigenvalues distribute to leading order according two smooth densities and we show here that the two dens…
For a holomorphic family of classical pseudodifferential operators on a closed manifold we give exact formulae for all coefficients in the Laurent expansion of its Kontsevich-Vishik canonical trace. This generalizes a known result identifying the Wodzicki residue with the pole at zero to all higher order terms.
We study the distribution of eigenvalues for non-selfadjoint perturbations of selfadjoint semiclassical analytic pseudodifferential operators in dimension two, assuming that the classical flow of the unperturbed part is completely integrable. An asymptotic formula of Weyl type for the number of eigenvalues in a spectral band, bounded from above and from below by levels corresponding to Diophantine invariant Lagrangian tori, is established. The Weyl law is given in terms of the long time averages of the leading non-selfadjoint perturbation along the classical flow of the unperturbed part.
Using a global symbol calculus for pseudodifferential operators on tori, we build a canonical trace on classical pseudodifferential operators on noncommutative tori in terms of a canonical discrete sum on the underlying toroidal symbols. We characterise the canonical trace on operators on the noncommutative torus as well as its underlying canonical discrete sum on symbols of fixed (resp.\ any) non--integer order. On the grounds of this uniqueness result, we prove that in the commutative setup, this canonical trace on the noncommutative torus reduces to Kontsevich and Vishik's canonical trace w…
