Let $G\subset Ø(n)$ be a group of isometries acting on $n$-dimensional Euclidean space $\R^n$, and ${\bf{X}}$ a bounded domain in $\R^n$ which is transformed into itself under the action of G. Consider a symmetric, classical pseudodifferential operator A_0 in $Ł^2(\R^n)$ with G-invariant Weyl symbol, and assume that it is semi-bounded from below. We show that the spectrum of the Friedrichs extension A of the operator $\mathrm{res} \circ A_0 \circ \mathrm{ext}: \CT({\bf{X}}) \to Ł^2({\bf{X}})$ is discrete, and derive asymptotics for the number $N_χ(λ)$ of eigenvalues of A less or equal $λ$ and with eigenfunctions in the $χ$-isotypic component of $Ł^2({\bf{X}})$, giving also an estimate for the remainder term in both cases where G is a finite, or, more generally, a compact group. In particular, we show that the multiplicity of each unitary irreducible representation in $Ł^2({\bf{X}})$ is asymptotically proportional to its dimension.
We study the asymptotic behavior of the counting function of tensor products of operators, in the cases where the factors are either pseudodifferential operators on closed manifolds, or pseudodifferential operators of Shubin type on $\mathbb{R}^n$, respectively. We obtain, in particular, the sharpness of the remainder term in the corresponding Weyl formulae, which we prove by means of the analysis of some explicit examples.
This paper deals with positivity properties for a pseudodifferential calculus, generalizing Weyl's classical quantization, and set on an infinite dimensional phase space, the Wiener space. In this frame, we show that a positive symbol does not, in general, give a positive operator. In order to measure the nonpositivity, we establish a Gårding's inequality, which holds for the symbol classes at hand. Nevertheless, for symbols with radial aspects, additional assumptions ensure the positivity of the associated operator.
Let $G\subset Ø(n)$ be a compact group of isometries acting on $n$-dimensional Euclidean space $\R^n$, and ${\bf{X}}$ a bounded domain in $\R^n$ which is transformed into itself under the action of $G$. Consider a symmetric, classical pseudodifferential operator $A_0$ in $Ł^2(\R^n)$ that commutes with the regular representation of $G$, and assume that it is elliptic on $\bf{X}$. We show that the spectrum of the Friedrichs extension $A$ of the operator $\mathrm{res} \circ A_0 \circ \mathrm{ext}: \CT({\bf{X}}) \to Ł^2({\bf{X}})$ is discrete, and using the method of the stationary phase, we deriv…
Parameter-ellipticity with respect to a closed subsector of the complex plane for pseudodifferential Douglis-Nirenberg systems is discussed and shown to imply the existence of a bounded H_\infty-calculus in suitable scales of Sobolev, Besov, and Hoelder spaces. We also admit non pseudodifferential perturbations. Applications concern systems with coefficients of mild Hoelder regularity and the generalized thermoelastic plate equations.
We study the complex powers $A^{z}$ of an elliptic, strictly positive pseudodifferential operator $A$ using an axiomatic method that combines the approaches of Guillemin and Seeley. In particular, we introduce a class of algebras, ``extended Weyl algebras,'' whose definition was inspired by Guillemin's paper on the subject. An extended Weyl algebra can be thought of as an algebra of ``abstract pseudodifferential operators.'' Many algebras of pseudodifferential operators are extended Weyl algebras. Several results typical for algebras of pseudodifferential operators (asymptotic completeness, co…
In this paper we establish explicit lower bounds for pseudodifferential operators with a radial symbol. The proofs use classical Weyl calculus techniques and some useful, if not celebrated, properties of the Laguerre polynomials.
One can argue that on flat space $\mathbb{R}^d$ the Weyl quantization is the most natural choice and that it has the best properties (e.g. symplectic covariance, real symbols correspond to Hermitian operators). On a generic manifold, there is no distinguished quantization, and a quantization is typically defined chart-wise. Here we introduce a quantization that, we believe, has the best properties for studying natural operators on pseudo-Riemannian manifolds. It is a generalization of the Weyl quantization - we call it the balanced geodesic Weyl quantization. Among other things, we prove that …
In this paper we investigate $L^p$ and Sobolev boundedness of a certain class of pseudodifferential operators with non-regular symbols. We employ regularisation methods, namely convolution with a net of mollifiers $(ρ_\eps)_\eps$, and we study the corresponding net of pseudodifferential operators providing $L^p$ and Sobolev estimates which relate the parameter $\eps$ with the non-regularity of the symbol.
The aim of this article is to prove a Beals type characterization theorem for pseudodifferential operators in Wiener spaces. The definition of pseudodifferential operators in Wiener spaces and a Calderón-Vaillancourt type result appear in [1]. The set of symbols considered here is the one of [1]. The Weyl calculus in infinite dimension considered here emphasizes the role of the Wick bi-symbols.
We study the change of quantization for a class of global pseudodifferential operators of infinite order in the setting of ultradifferentiable functions of Beurling type. The composition of different quantizations as well as the transpose of a quantization are also analysed, with applications to the Weyl calculus. We also compare global $ω$-hypoellipticity and global $ω$-regularity of these classes of pseudodifferential operators.
We study the boundedness of rough Fourier integral and pseudodifferential operators, defined by general rough Hörmander class amplitudes, on Banach and quasi-Banach $L^p$ spaces. Thereafter we apply the aforementioned boundedness in order to improve on some of the existing boundedness results for Hörmander class bilinear pseudodifferential operators and certain classes of bilinear (as well as multilinear) Fourier integral operators. For these classes of amplitudes, the boundedness of the aforementioned Fourier integral operators turn out to be sharp. Furthermore we also obtain results for roug…
This work is concerned with extending the results of Calder\' on and Vaillancourt proving the boundedness of Weyl pseudo differential operators Op_h^{weyl} (F) in L^2(\R^n). We state conditions under which the norm of such operators has an upper bound independent of n. To this aim, we apply a decomposition of the identity to the symbol F, thus obtaining a sum of operators of a hybrid type, each of them behaving as a Weyl operator with respect to some of the variables and as an anti-Wick operator with respect to the other ones. Then we establish upper bounds for these auxiliary operators, using…
We investigate properties of pseudodifferential operators on $L^2$ space on manifold with ends including asymptotically conical or hyperbolic ends. Our pseudodifferential operators are a generalization of the canonical quantization which naturally appears in the quantum mechanics on curved spaces. We prove a Calderón-Vaillancourt type theorem for our pseudodifferential operators and discuss a construction of parametrix of elliptic differential operators on manifolds with ends.
We aim at extending the definition of the Weyl calculus to an infinite dimensional setting, by replacing the phase space $ \mathbb{R}^{2n}$ by $B^2$, where $(i,H,B)$ is an abstract Wiener space. A first approach is to generalize the integral definition using the Wigner function. The symbol is then a function defined on $B^2$ and belonging to a $L^1$ space for a gaussian measure, the Weyl operator is defined as a quadratic form on a dense subspace of $L^2(B)$. For example, the symbol can be the stochastic extension on $B^2$, in the sense of L. Gross, of a function $F$ which is continuous and bo…

We study the distribution of eigenvalues for non-selfadjoint perturbations of selfadjoint semiclassical analytic pseudodifferential operators in dimension two, assuming that the classical flow of the unperturbed part is completely integrable. An asymptotic formula of Weyl type for the number of eigenvalues in a spectral band, bounded from above and from below by levels corresponding to Diophantine invariant Lagrangian tori, is established. The Weyl law is given in terms of the long time averages of the leading non-selfadjoint perturbation along the classical flow of the unperturbed part.
By using a time slicing procedure, we represent the solution operator of a second-order parabolic pseudodifferential equation on $\R^n$ as an infinite product of zero-order pseudodifferential operators. A similar representation formula is proven for parabolic differential equations on a compact Riemannian manifold. Each operator in the multi-product is given by a simple explicit Ansatz. The proof is based on an effective use of the Weyl calculus and the Fefferman-Phong inequality.
We prove equivariant spectral asymptotics for $ h$-pseudodifferential operators for compact orthogonal group actions generalizing results of El-Houakmi and Helffer (1991) and Cassanas (2006). Using recent results for certain oscillatory integrals with singular critical sets (Ramacher 2010) we can deduce a weak equivariant Weyl law. Furthermore, we can prove a complete asymptotic expansion for the Gutzwiller trace formula without any additional condition on the group action by a suitable generalization of the dynamical assumptions on the Hamilton flow.
In this note we compare two recent results about the distribution of eigenvalues for semi-classical pseudodifferential operators in two dimensions. For classes of analytic operators A. Melin and the author obtained a complex Bohr-Sommerfeld rule, showing that the eigenvalues are situated on a distorted lattice. On the other hand, with M. Hager we showed in any dimension that Weyl asymptotics holds with probability close to 1 for small random perturbations of the operator. In both cases the eigenvalues distribute to leading order according two smooth densities and we show here that the two dens…
It is shown that an elliptic scattering operator $A$ on a compact manifold with boundary with coefficients in the bounded operators of a bundle of Banach spaces of class (HT) and Pisier's property $(α)$ has maximal regularity (up to a spectral shift), provided that the spectrum of the principal symbol of $A$ on the scattering cotangent bundle of the manifold avoids the right half-plane. This is deduced directly from a Seeley theorem, i.e. the resolvent is represented in terms of pseudodifferential operators with R-bounded symbols, thus showing by an iteration argument the R-boundedness of $λ(A…
In previous papers, a generalization of the Weyl calculus was introduced in connection with the quantization of a particle moving in $\mathbb R^n$ under the influence of a variable magnetic field $B$. It incorporates phase factors defined by $B$ and reproduces the usual Weyl calculus for B=0. In the present article we develop the classical pseudodifferential theory of this formalism for the standard symbol classes $S^m_{ρ,δ}$. Among others, we obtain properties and asymptotic developments for the magnetic symbol multiplication, existence of parametrices, boundedness and positivity results, pro…
We show that if the Hardy-Littlewood maximal operator is bounded on a separable Banach function space $X(\mathbb{R}^n)$ and on its associate space $X'(\mathbb{R}^n)$, then a pseudodifferential operator $\operatorname{Op}(a)$ is bounded on $X(\mathbb{R}^n)$ whenever the symbol $a$ belongs to the Hörmander class $S_{ρ,δ}^{n(ρ-1)}$ with $0<ρ\le 1$, $0\leδ<1$ or to the the Miyachi class $S_{ρ,δ}^{n(ρ-1)}(\varkappa,n)$ with $0\leδ\leρ\le 1$, $0\leδ<1$, and $\varkappa>0$. This result is applied to the case of variable Lebesgue spaces $L^{p(\cdot)}(\mathbb{R}^n)$.
Mixed-norm Lebesgue spaces found their place in the study of some questions in the theory of partial differential equations, as can be seen from recent interest in the continuity of certain classes of pseudodifferential operators on these spaces. In this paper, we use some recent advances in the pseudodifferential calculus for nonsmooth symbols to prove the boundedness of pseudodifferential operators with such symbols on mixed-norm Lebesgue spaces.
This is a short survey on the connection between general extension theories and the study of realizations of elliptic operators A on smooth domains in R^n, n > 1. The theory of pseudodifferential boundary problems has turned out to be very useful here, not only as a formulational framework, but also for the solution of specific questions. We recall some elements of that theory, and show its application in several cases (including recent results), namely to the lower boundedness question, and the question of spectral asymptotics for differences between resolvents.
In this paper, we study the boundedness of pseudodifferential operators with symbols in the Hörmander class $S^0_{ρ,ρ}$ on $α$-modulation spaces $M_{p,q}^{s,α}$, and consider the relation between $α$ and $ρ$. In particular, we show that pseudodifferential operators with symbols in $S^0_{α,α}$ are bounded on all $α$-modulation spaces $M^{s,α}_{p,q}$, for arbitrary $s\in\mathbb{R}$ and for the whole range of exponents $0 < p,q \leq \infty$.
We establish the existence of a bounded $H_\infty$-calculus for a large class of hypoelliptic pseudodifferential operators on R^n and closed manifolds.
First, we reconsider the magnetic pseudodifferential calculus and show that for a large class of non-decaying symbols, their corresponding magnetic pseudodifferential operators can be represented, up to a global gauge transform, as generalized Hofstadter-like, bounded matrices. As a by-product, we prove a Calderón-Vaillancourt type result. Second, we make use of this matrix representation and prove sharp results on the spectrum location when the magnetic field strength $b$ varies. Namely, when the operators are self-adjoint, we show that their spectrum (as a set) is at least $1/2$-Hölder conti…
In this paper, by explicitly calculating the principal symbols of pseudodifferential operators and by applying Hömander's spectral function theorem, we obtain the Weyl-type asymptotic formulas with sharp remainder estimates for the counting functions of the two classes of biharmonic Steklov eigenvalues $λ_k$ and $μ_k$ in a smooth bounded domain of a Riemannian manifold. This solves a longstanding challenging problem.
The gauge covariant magnetic Weyl calculus has been introduced and studied in previous works. We prove criteria in terms of commutators for operators to be magnetic pseudo-differential operators of suitable symbol classes. The approach is completely intrinsic; neither the statements nor the proofs depend on a choice of a vector potential. We apply this criteria to inversion problems, functional calculus, affiliation results and to the study of the evolution group generated by a magnetic pseudo-differential operator.
Boundedness properties for pseudodifferential operators with symbols in the bilinear Hörmander classes of sufficiently negative order are proved. The results are obtained in the scale of Lebesgue spaces and, in some cases, end-point estimates involving weak-type spaces and BMO are provided as well. From the Lebesgue space estimates, Sobolev ones are then easily obtained using functional calculus and interpolation. In addition, it is shown that, in contrast with the linear case, operators associated with symbols of order zero may fail to be bounded on products of Lebesgue spaces.
In this paper we establish some endpoint estimates for bilinearpseudodifferential operators with symbol in the class BS^m_{1,1}, involving the space of functions with local bounded mean oscillation bmo. As a consequence we also obtain an endpoint estimate of Kato-Ponce type.
We will present versions of the Rellich-Kondrachov theorem for pseudo-differential operators acting on localizable Hardy spaces. One of the techniques includes boundedness properties for pseudodifferential operators with symbols in the Hörmander class, that might be of interest in his own right, extending results previously obtained by Goldberg, Alvarez and Hounie, Taylor - among others. As application, we obtain compact embedding results for distributions in nonhomogeneous localizable Hardy-Sobolev spaces.
Bilinear pseudodifferential operators with symbols in the bilinear analog of all the Hörmander classes are considered and the possibility of a symbolic calculus for the transposes of the operators in such classes is investigated. Precise results about which classes are closed under transposition and can be characterized in terms of asymptotic expansions are presented. This work extends the results for more limited classes studied before in the literature and, hence, allows the use of the symbolic calculus (when it exists) as an alternative way to recover the boundedness on products of Lebesgue…
We present in this paper the construction of a pseudodifferential calculus on smooth non-compact manifolds associated to a globally defined and coordinate independant complete symbol calculus, that generalizes the standard pseudodifferential calculus on $\R^n$. We consider the case of manifolds $M$ with linearization in the sense of Bokobza-Haggiag, such that the associated (abstract) exponential map provides global diffeomorphisms of $M$ with $\R^n$ at any point. Cartan--Hadamard manifolds are special cases of such manifolds. The abstract exponential map encodes a notion of infinity on the ma…
We give a complete characterization of the continuity of pseudodifferential operators with symbols in modulation spaces $M^{p,q}$, acting on a given Lebesgue space $L^r$. Namely, we find the full range of triples $(p,q,r)$, for which such a boundedness occurs. More generally, we completely characterize the same problem for operators acting on Wiener amalgam space $W(L^r,L^s)$ and even on modulation spaces $M^{r,s}$. Finally the action of pseudodifferential operators with symbols in $W(\Fur L^1,L^\infty)$ is also investigated.
In a domain $Ω\subseteq \mathbb{R}^\mathbf{N}$ we consider compact, Birman-Schwinger type, operators of the form $\mathbf{T}_{P,\mathfrak{A}}=\mathfrak{A}^*P\mathfrak{A}$; here $P$ is a singular Borel measure in $Ω$ and $\mathfrak{A}$ is a noncritical order $-l\ne -\mathbf{N}/2$ pseudodifferential operator. For a class of such operators, we obtain estimates and a proper version of H.Weyl's asymptotic law for eigenvalues, with order depending on dimensional characteristics of the measure. A version of the CLR estimate for singular measures is proved. For non-selfadjoint operators of the form $P…
Let $H$ denote the harmonic oscillator Hamiltonian on $\mathbb{R}^d,$ perturbed by an isotropic pseudodifferential operator of order $1.$ We consider the Schrödinger propagator $U(t)=e^{-itH},$ and find that while $\operatorname{singsupp} \operatorname{Tr} U(t) \subset 2 π\mathbb{Z}$ as in the unperturbed case, there exists a large class of perturbations in dimension $d \geq 2$ for which the singularities of $\operatorname{Tr} U(t)$ at nonzero multiples of $2 π$ are weaker than the singularity at $t=0$. The remainder term in the Weyl law is of order $o(λ^{d-1})$, improving in these cases the $…
In this work, we consider fixed $1/2$ spin particles interacting with the quantized radiation field in the context of quantum electrodynamics (QED). We investigate the time evolution operator in studying the reduced propagator (interaction picture). We first prove that this propagator belongs to the class of infinite dimensional Weyl pseudodifferential operators recently introduced in \cite {A-J-N} on Wiener spaces. We give a semiclassical expansion of the symbol of the reduced propagator up to any order with estimates on the remainder terms. Next, taking into account analyticity properties fo…
We consider quite general $h$-pseudodifferential operators on $R^n$ with small random perturbations and show that in the limit of small $h$ the eigenvalues are distributed according to a Weyl law with a probabality that tends to 1. The first author has previously obtained a similar result in dimension 1. Our class of perturbations is different.
Let $X$ be a compact manifold with boundary. Suppose that the boundary is fibred, $ϕ:\pa X\longrightarrow Y,$ and let $x\in\CI(X)$ be a boundary defining function. This data fixes the space of `fibred cusp' vector fields, consisting of those vector fields $V$ on $X$ satisfying $Vx=O(x^2)$ and which are tangent to the fibres of $ϕ;$ it is a Lie algebra and $\CI(X)$ module. This Lie algebra is quantized to the `small calculus' of pseudodifferential operators $\PsiF*(X).$ Mapping properties including boundedness, regularity, Fredholm condition and symbolic maps are discussed for this calculus. Th…
We obtain improved bounds for pseudodifferential operators with rough symbols on Hardy spaces for Fourier integral operators. The symbols $a(x,η)$ are elements of $C^{r}_{*}S^{m}_{1,δ}$ classes that have limited regularity in the $x$ variable. We show that the associated pseudodifferential operator $a(x,D)$ maps between Sobolev spaces $\mathcal{H}^{s,p}_{FIO}(\mathbb{R}^{n})$ and $\mathcal{H}^{t,p}_{FIO}(\mathbb{R}^{n})$ over the Hardy space for Fourier integral operators $\mathcal{H}^{p}_{FIO}(\mathbb{R}^{n})$. Our main result is that for all $r>0$, $m=0$ and $δ=1/2$, there exists an interval…
The theme of this work is that the theory of charged particles in a uniform magnetic field can be generalized to a large class of operators if one uses an extended a class of Weyl operators which we call "Landau--Weyl pseudodifferential operators". The link between standard Weyl calculus and Landau--Weyl calculus is made explicit by the use of an infinite family of intertwining "windowed wavepacket transforms"; this makes possible the use of the theory of modulation spaces to study various regularity properties. Our techniques allow us not only to recover easily the eigenvalues and eigenfuncti…
In some previous papers we have defined and studied a 'magnetic' pseudodifferential calculus as a gauge covariant generalization of the Weyl calculus when a magnetic field is present. In this paper we extend the standard Fourier Integral Operators Theory to the case with a magnetic field, proving composition theorems, continuity theorems in 'magnetic' Sobolev spaces and Egorov type theorems. The main application is the representation of the evolution group generated by a 1-st order 'magnetic' pseudodifferential operator (in particular the relativistic Schrödinger operator with magnetic field) …
The construction, in [AJN], of a pseudodifferential calculus analogous to the Weyl calculus, in an infinite dimensional setting, required the introduction of convenient classes of symbols. In this article, we proceed with the study of these classes in order to establish, later on, the properties that a pseudodifferential calculus is expected to satisfy. The introduction and the study of a new class are rendered necessary in view of applications in QED. We prove here that the symbols of both classes and the terms of their Taylorexpansions admit stochastic extensions. We define, in this infinite…
We describe boundedness and compactness properties for the operators obtained by the Weyl-Pedersen calculus in the case of the irreducible unitary representations of nilpotent Lie groups that are associated with flat coadjoint orbits. We use spaces of smooth symbols satisfying appropriate growth conditions expressed in terms of invariant differential operators on the coadjoint orbit under consideration. Our method also provides conditions for these operators to belong to one of the Schatten ideals of compact operators. In the special case of the Schrödinger representation of the Heisenberg gro…
We derive conditions that ensure the existence of a bounded $H_\infty$-calculus in weighted $L_p$-Sobolev spaces for closed extensions $\underline{A}_T$ of a differential operator $A$ on a conic manifold with boundary, subject to differential boundary conditions $T$. In general, these conditions ask for a particular pseudodifferential structure of the resolvent $(λ-\underline{A}_T)^{-1}$ in a sector $Λ\subset\mathbf{C}$. In case of the minimal extension they reduce to parameter-ellipticity of the boundary value problem $(A,T)$. Examples concern the Dirichlet and Neumann Laplacians.
