The Krieger generator theorem says that every invertible ergodic measure-preserving system with finite measure-theoretic entropy can be embedded into a full shift with strictly greater topological entropy. We extend Krieger's theorem to include toral automorphisms, and more generally, any topological dynamical system on a compact metric space that satisfies almost weak specification, asymptotic entropy expansiveness, and the small boundary property. As a corollary, one obtains a complete solution to a natural generalization of an open problem in Halmos's 1956 book regarding an isomorphism invariant that he proposed.
A Borel system $(X,S)$ is `almost Borel universal' if any free Borel dynamical system $(Y,T)$ of strictly lower entropy is isomorphic to a Borel subsystem of $(X,S)$, after removing a null set. We obtain and exploit a new sufficient condition for a topological dynamical system to be almost Borel universal. We use our main result to deduce various conclusions and answer a number of questions. Along with additional results, we prove that a `generic' homeomorphism of a compact manifold of topological dimension at least two can model any ergodic transformation, that non-uniform specification impli…
For a totally uniquely ergodic dynamical system, we prove a topological Wiener-Wintner ergodic theorem with polynomial weights under the coincidence of the quasi discrete spectrums of the system in both senses of Abramov and of Hahn-Parry. The result applies to ergodic nilsystems. Fully oscillating sequences can then be constructed on nilmanifolds.
We prove that a shift ergodic measure on a topologically mixing sub-shift is isomorphic to a Bernoulli shift whenever it is quasi invariant under permutations of finite number of coordinates. We prove also that Gibbs measures on topologically mixing subshift of finite type are quasi invariant.
The article presents a new perspective on the isomorphism problem for non-ergodic measure-preserving dynamical systems with discrete spectrum which is based on the connection between ergodic theory and topological dynamics constituted by topological models. By first solving the isomorphism problem for a certain class of topological dynamical systems, it is shown that the measure-preserving case can in fact be deduced from the topological one via the construction of topological models. As a byproduct, a new characterization of mean ergodicity for topological dynamical systems is obtained.
We generalize a result of Lindenstrauss on the interplay between measurable and topological dynamics which shows that every separable ergodic measurably distal dynamical system has a minimal distal model. We show that such a model can, in fact, be chosen completely canonically. The construction is performed by going through the Furstenberg--Zimmer tower of a measurably distal system and showing that at each step, there is a simple and canonical distal minimal model. This hinges on a new characterization of isometric extensions in topological dynamics.
We show that systems with some specification properties are topologically or almost Borel universal, in the sense that any aperiodic subshift with lower entropy may be topologically or almost Borel embedded.
In this work we obtain some metric and ergodic properties of $C^{1+}$ partially hyperbolic diffeomorphisms with one-dimensional topological neutral center, mainly regarding the behavior of its center foliation. Based on a trichotomy for the center conditional measures of any invariant ergodic measure, we show that if these conditionals have full support, then the center foliation is leafwise absolutely continuous, the diffeomorphism is Bernoulli in the $C^{1+}$ case, and an invariance principle occurs in the sense that M may be covered by a finite number of open sets where the system of center…
We show that for every topological dynamical system with the approximate product property, zero topological entropy is equivalent to unique ergodicity. Equivalence of minimality is also proved under a slightly stronger condition. Moreover, we show that unique ergodicity implies the approximate product property if the system has periodic points.
We establish connections between several properties of topological dynamical systems, such as: - every point is generic for an ergodic measure, - the map sending points to the measures they generate is continuous, - the system splits into uniquely (alternatively, strictly) ergodic subsystems, - the map sending ergodic measures to their topological supports is continuous, - the Cesaro means of every continuous function converge uniformly.
Consider the space of analytic, quasi-periodic cocycles on the higher dimensional torus. We provide examples of cocycles with nontrivial Lyapunov spectrum, whose homotopy classes do not contain any cocycles satisfying the dominated splitting property. This shows that the main result in the recent work "Complex one-frequency cocycles" by A. Ávila, S. Jitomirskaya and C. Sadel does not hold in the higher dimensional torus setting.
Downarowicz and Maass (2008) proposed topological ranks for all homeomorphic Cantor minimal dynamical systems using properly ordered Bratteli diagrams. In this study, we adopt this definition to the case of all essentially minimal zero-dimensional systems. We consider the cases in which topological ranks are 2 and unique minimal sets are fixed points. Akin and Kolyada (2003), in their study of Li--Yorke sensitivity, showed that if the unique minimal set of an essentially minimal system is a fixed point, then the system must be proximal. However, a finite topological rank implies expansiveness;…
We provide a criterion for a point satisfying the required disjointness condition in Sarnak's Möbius Disjointness Conjecture. As a direct application, we have that the conjecture holds for any topological model of an ergodic system with discrete spectrum.
We completely elucidate the relationship between two invariants associated with an ergodic probability measure-preserving (pmp) equivalence relation, namely its cost and the minimal number of topological generators of its full group. It follows that for any free pmp ergodic action of the free group on $n$ generators, the minimal number of topological generators for the full group of the action is $n+1$, answering a question of Kechris.
It follows from Oseledec Multiplicative Ergodic Theorem (or Kingman's Sub-additional Ergodic Theorem) that the set of `non-typical' points for which the Oseledec averages of a given continuous cocycle diverge has zero measure with respect to any invariant probability measure. In strong contrast, for any H$\ddot{o}$der continuous cocycles over hyperbolic systems, in this article we show that either all ergodic measures have same Maximal Lyapunov exponents or the set of Lyapunov `non-typical' points have full topological entropy and packing topological entropy. Moreover, we give an estimate of B…
Construction of curious minimal uniquely ergodic homeomorphisms on manifolds: the Denjoy-Rees technique
For a large class of transitive non-hyperbolic systems, we construct nonhyperbolic ergodic measures with entropy arbitrarily close to its maximal possible value. The systems we consider are partially hyperbolic with one-dimension central direction for which there are positive entropy ergodic measures whose central Lyapunov exponent is negative, zero, or positive. We construct ergodic measures with zero central Lyapunov exponent whose entropy is positive and arbitrarily close to the topological entropy of the set of points with central Lyapunov exponent zero. This provides a restricted variatio…
Let $(X,Γ)$ be a topological system, where $Γ$ is a nilpotent group generated by $T_1,\ldots, T_d$ such that for each $T\in Γ$, $T\neq e_Γ$, $(X,T)$ is weakly mixing and minimal. For $d,k\in \mathbb{N}$, let $p_{i,j}(n), 1\le i\le k, 1\le j\le d$ be polynomials with rational coefficients taking integer values on the integers and $p_{i,j}(0)=0$. We show that if the expressions $g_i(n)=T_1^{p_{i,1}(n)}\cdots T_d^{p_{i,d}(n)}$ depends nontrivially on $n$ for $i=1,2,\cdots,k$, and for all $i\neq j\in \{1,2,\ldots,k\}$ the expressions $g_i(n)g_j(n)^{-1}$ depend nontrivially on $n$, then there is a …
Ergodic optimization aims to single out dynamically invariant Borel probability measures which maximize the integral of a given "performance" function. For a continuous self-map of a compact metric space and a dense set of continuous performance functions, we show that the existence of uncountably many ergodic maximizing measures. We also show that, for a topologically mixing subshift of finite type and a dense set of continuous functions there exist uncountably many ergodic maximizing measures which are fully supported and have positive entropy.
We study two properties of nonsingular and infinite measure-preserving ergodic systems: weak double ergodicity, and ergodicity with isometric coefficients. We show that there exist infinite measure-preserving transformations that are ergodic with isometric coefficients but are not weakly doubly ergodic. We also give type $\text{III}_λ$ examples of such systems, $0<λ\leq 1$. We prove that under certain hypotheses, systems that are weakly mixing are ergodic with isometric coefficients and along the way we give an example of a uniformly rigid topological dynamical system along the sequence $(n_i)…
We study the topological and ergodic dynamics of Bohr almost periodic motions of a topological abelian semigroup acting continuously on a compact metric space.
We introduce a formalism for handling general spaces of hierarchical tilings, a category that includes substitution tilings, Bratteli-Vershik systems, S-adic transformations, and multi-dimensional cut-and-stack transformations. We explore ergodic, spectral and topological properties of these spaces. We show that familiar properties of substitution tilings carry over under appropriate assumptions, and give counter-examples where these assumptions are not met. For instance, we exhibit a minimal tiling space that is not uniquely ergodic, with one ergodic measure having pure point spectrum and ano…
Given a dynamical system $(X,T)$ one can define a speedup of $(X,T)$ as another dynamical system conjugate to $S:X\rightarrow X$ where $S(x)=T^{p(x)}(x)$ for some function $p:X\rightarrow\mathbb{Z}^{+}$. In $1985$ Arnoux, Ornstein, and Weiss showed that any aperiodic, not necessarily ergodic, measure preserving system is isomorphic to a speedup of any ergodic measure preserving system. In this paper we study speedups in the topological category. Specifically, we consider minimal homeomorphisms on Cantor spaces. Our main theorem gives conditions on when one such system is a speedup of another. …
The aim of this article is to obtain a better understanding and classification of strictly ergodic topological dynamical systems with discrete spectrum. To that end, we first determine when an isomorphic maximal equicontinuous factor map of a minimal topological dynamical system has trivial (one point) fibres. In other words, we characterize when minimal mean equicontinuous systems are almost automorphic. Furthermore, we investigate another natural subclass of mean equicontinuous systems, so-called diam-mean equicontinuous systems, and show that a minimal system is diam-mean equicontinuous if …
For strictly ergodic systems, we introduce the class of CF-Nil($k$) systems: systems for which the maximal measurable and maximal topological $k$-step pronilfactors coincide as measure-preserving systems. Weiss' theorem implies that such systems are abundant in a precise sense. We show that the CF-Nil($k$) systems are precisely the class of minimal systems for which the $k$-step nilsequence version of the Wiener-Wintner average converges everywhere. As part of the proof we establish that pronilsystems are $coalescent$ both in the measurable and topological categories. In addition, we character…
We show that the set of ergodic invariant measures of a shift space with a safe symbol (this includes all hereditary shifts) is arcwise connected when endowed with the $d$-bar metric. As a consequence the set of ergodic measures of such a shift is also arcwise connected in the weak-star topology and the entropy function over this set attains all values in the interval between zero and the topological entropy of the shift (inclusive). The latter result is motivated by a conjecture of A.~Katok.
We study the problem on the weak-star decomposability of a topological $\mathbb{N}_{0}$-dynamical system $(Ω,φ)$, where $φ$ is an endomorphism of a metric compact set $Ω$, into ergodic components in terms of the associated enveloping semigroups. In the tame case (where the Ellis semigroup $E(Ω,φ)$ consists of $B_{1}$-transformations $Ω\rightarrow Ω$), we show that (i) the desired decomposition exists for an appropriate choice of the generalized sequential averaging method; (ii) every sequence of weighted ergodic means for the shift operator $x\rightarrow x\circφ$, $x\in C(Ω)$, contains a point…
