In this paper it is shown that every non-periodic ergodic system has two topologically weakly mixing, fully supported models: one is non-minimal but has a dense set of minimal points; and the other one is proximal. Also for independent interests, for a given Kakutani-Rokhlin tower with relatively prime column heights, it is demonstrated how to get a new taller Kakutani-Rokhlin tower with same property, which can be used in Weiss's proof of the Jewett-Krieger's theorem and the proofs of our theorems. Applications of the results are given.
Downarowicz and Maass (2008) proposed topological ranks for all homeomorphic Cantor minimal dynamical systems using properly ordered Bratteli diagrams. In this study, we adopt this definition to the case of all essentially minimal zero-dimensional systems. We consider the cases in which topological ranks are 2 and unique minimal sets are fixed points. Akin and Kolyada (2003), in their study of Li--Yorke sensitivity, showed that if the unique minimal set of an essentially minimal system is a fixed point, then the system must be proximal. However, a finite topological rank implies expansiveness;…
The regionally proximal relation of order $d$ along arithmetic progressions, namely ${\bf AP}^{[d]}$ for $d\in \N$, is introduced and investigated. It turns out that if $(X,T)$ is a topological dynamical system with ${\bf AP}^{[d]}=Δ$, then each ergodic measure of $(X,T)$ is isomorphic to a $d$-step pro-nilsystem, and thus $(X,T)$ has zero entropy. Moreover, it is shown that if $(X,T)$ is a strictly ergodic distal system with the property that the maximal topological and measurable $d$-step pro-nilsystems are isomorphic, then ${\bf AP}^{[d]}={\bf RP}^{[d]}$ for each $d\in {\mathbb N}$. It foll…
We study two properties of nonsingular and infinite measure-preserving ergodic systems: weak double ergodicity, and ergodicity with isometric coefficients. We show that there exist infinite measure-preserving transformations that are ergodic with isometric coefficients but are not weakly doubly ergodic. We also give type $\text{III}_λ$ examples of such systems, $0<λ\leq 1$. We prove that under certain hypotheses, systems that are weakly mixing are ergodic with isometric coefficients and along the way we give an example of a uniformly rigid topological dynamical system along the sequence $(n_i)…
This work contains the following results: the trajectory fullness of the homoclinic groups, their connections with factors, K-property, weak multiple mixing; the ergodicity of the weakly homoclinic group for Gauss and Poisson actions; the triviality of the weakly homoclinic group for classes of rank-1 actions. Some open problems are discussed.
Karlsson and Margulis proved in the setting of uniformly convex geodesic spaces, which additionally satisfy a nonpositive curvature condition, an ergodic theorem that focuses on the asymptotic behavior of integrable cocycles of nonexpansive mappings over an ergodic measure-preserving transformation. In this note we show that this result holds true when assuming a weaker notion of uniform convexity.
We prove that if a topological dynamical system is mean sensitive and contains a mean proximal pair consisting of a transitive point and a periodic point, then it is mean Li-Yorke chaotic (DC2 chaotic). On the other hand we show that a system is mean proximal if and only if it is uniquely ergodic and the unique measure is supported on one point.
We study the notions of weak rational ergodicity and rational weak mixing as defined by Jon Aaronson. We prove that various families of infinite measure-preserving rank-one transformations possess (or do not posses) these properties, and consider their relation to other notions of mixing in infinite measure.
We examine some of the properties of uniformly rigid transformations, and analyze the compatibility of uniform rigidity and (measurable) weak mixing along with some of their asymptotic convergence properties. We show that on Cantor space, there does not exist a finite measure-preserving, totally ergodic, uniformly rigid transformation. We briefly discuss general group actions and show that (measurable) weak mixing and uniform rigidity can coexist in a more general setting.
A simple proof of the fact that each rank-one infinite measure preserving (i.m.p.) transformation is subsequence weakly rationally ergodic is found. Some classes of funny rank-one i.m.p. actions of Abelian groups are shown to be subsequence weakly rationally ergodic. A constructive definition of finite funny rank for actions of arbitrary infinite countable groups is given. It is shown that the ergodic i.m.p. transformations of balanced finite funny rank are subsequence weakly rationally ergodic. It is shown that the ergodic probability preserving transformations of exact finite rank, the ergod…
The family of pairwise independently determined (PID) systems, i.e. those for which the independent joining is the only self joining with independent 2-marginals, is a class of systems for which the long standing open question by Rokhlin, of whether mixing implies mixing of all orders, has a positive answer. We show that in the class of weakly mixing PID one finds a positive answer for another long-standing open problem, whether the multiple ergodic averages \begin{equation*} \frac 1 N\sum_{n=0}^{N-1}f_1(T^nx)\cdots f_d(T^{dn}x), \quad N\to \infty, \end{equation*} almost surely converge.
In this article we will see some properties that guarantee that a product of an ergodic non-singular action and a probability preserving ergodic action is also an ergodic action. We will start by proving 'The multiplier theorem' for locally compact abelian groups. Then we will show that for certain locally compact Polish groups (Moore groups, and minimally weakly mixing groups), a non-singular G action is weakly mixing if and only if any finite dimensional G-invariant subspace of L_\infty is trivial. Finally, we will show that the Gaussian action associated to the infinite dimensional irreduci…
It is shown that each non-compact locally compact second countable non-(T) group $G$ possesses non-strongly ergodic weakly mixing IDPFT Poisson actions of arbitrary Krieger's type. These actions are amenable if and only if $G$ is amenable. If $G$ has the Haagerup property then (and only then) these actions can be chosen of 0-type. If $G$ is amenable and unimodular then $G$ has weakly mixing Bernoulli actions of any possible Krieger's type.
We show that all rank-one transformations are subsequence boundedly rationally ergodic and that there exist rank-one transformations that are not weakly rationally ergodic.
We extend the notion of rational ergodicity to $β$-rational ergodicity for $β> 1$. Given $β\in \mathbb R$ such that $β> 1$, we construct an uncountable family of rank-one infinite measure preserving transformations that are weakly rationally ergodic, but are not $β$-rationally ergodic. The established notion of rational ergodicity corresponds to 2-rational ergodicity. Thus, this paper answers an open question by showing that weak rational ergodicity does not imply rational ergodicity.
We present a lecture note on Thouvenot's proof of the Roth-Furstenberg theorem and joining proofs of Furstenberg's theorems on multiple progression average mixing for weakly mixing transformations.
Let $m\in\mathbb{N}$ and $\textbf{X}=(X,\mathcal{X},μ,(T_α)_{α\in\mathbb{R}^{m}})$ be a measure preserving system with an $\mathbb{R}^{m}$-action. We say that a Borel measure $ν$ on $\mathbb{R}^{m}$ is weakly equidistributed for $\textbf{X}$ if there exists $A\subseteq\mathbb{R}$ of density 1 such that for all $f\in L^{\infty}(μ)$, we have $$\lim_{t\in A,t\to\infty}\int_{\mathbb{R}^{m}}f(T_{t α}x)\,dν(α)=\int_{X}f\,dμ$$ for $μ$-a.e. $x\in X$. Let $W(\textbf{X})$ denote the collection of all $α\in\mathbb{R}^{m}$ such that the $\mathbb{R}$-action $(T_{tα})_{t\in\mathbb{R}}$ is not ergodic. Under…
For a weakly mixing bounded rank-one construction the disjointness of its powers is proved. For non-rigid constructions we get minimal self-joinings. Examples of non-mixing rank one actions with explicit weak closure are proposed.
By proving the minimality of face transformations acting on the diagonal points and searching the points allowed in the minimal sets, it is shown that the regionally proximal relation of order $d$, $\RP^{[d]}$, is an equivalence relation for minimal systems. Moreover, the lifting of $\RP^{[d]}$ between two minimal systems is obtained, which implies that the factor induced by $\RP^{[d]}$ is the maximal $d$-step nilfactor. The above results extend the same conclusions proved by Host, Kra and Maass for minimal distal systems. A combinatorial consequence is that if $S$ is a dynamically syndetic su…
We prove that a class of infinite measure preserving transformations, satisfying a "strong" weak mixing condition, generates all rigidity sequences of all conservative ergodic invertible measure preserving transformations defined on a Lebesgue $σ$-finite measure space.
It is shown that for each $N>0$ and for a wide class of Abelian non-compact locally compact second countable groups $G$ including all infinite countable discrete ones and $\Bbb R^{d_1}\times\Bbb Z^{d_2}$ with $d_1,d_2\ge 0$, there exists a weakly mixing probability preserving $G$-action with a homogeneous spectrum of multiplicity $N$.
We construct a rank one infinite measure preserving transformation $T$ such that for all sequences of nonzero integers $\{k_{1},..., k_{r}\}$, $T^{k_{1}}\times...\times T^{k_{r}}$ is ergodic.
In this paper, we investigate the ergodic and rigidity properties of weakly hyperbolic group actions. Motivated by classical theorems describing Anosov diffeomorphisms, we obtain two main results: First, all C^2 volume preserving weakly hyperbolic actions on closed manifolds are ergodic. This result generalizes Anosov's classical theorem on ergodicity of Anosov diffeomorphisms to the wider class of weakly hyperbolic group actions. To state the second main result, suppose that A denotes a weakly hyperbolic action of a higher rank lattice (such as SL(n,Z) for n>2) by C^2 volume preserving diffeo…
Given a transformation $T$ of a standard measure space $(X,μ)$, let $\Cal M(T)$ denote the set of spectral multiplicities of the Koopman operator $U_T$ defined in $L^2(X,μ)\ominus\Bbb C$ by $U_Tf:=f\circ T$. It is discussed in this survey paper which subsets of $\Bbb N\cup\{\infty\}$ are realizable as $\Cal M(T)$ for various $T$: ergodic, weakly mixing, mixing, Gaussian, Poisson, ergodic infinite measure preserving, etc. The corresponding constructions are considered in detail. Generalizations to actions of Abelian locally compact second countable groups are also discussed.
For $n\geq 1$ we consider the class JP($n$) of dynamical systems whose every ergodic joining with a Cartesian product of $k$ weakly mixing automorphisms ($k\geq n$) can be represented as the independent extension of a joining of the system with only $n$ coordinate factors. For $n\geq 2$ we show that, whenever the maximal spectral type of a weakly mixing automorphism $T$ is singular with respect to the convolution of any $n$ continuous measures, i.e. $T$ has the so-called convolution singularity property of order $n$, then $T$ belongs to JP($n-1$). To provide examples of such automorphisms, we …
We consider measures which are invariant under a measurable iterated function system with positive, place-dependent probabilities in a separable metric space. We provide an upper bound of the Hausdorff dimension of such a measure if it is ergodic. We also prove that it is ergodic iff the related skew product is.
It is shown that there exist a subsequence for which the multiple ergodic averages of commuting invertible measure preserving transformations of a Lebesgue probability space converge almost everywhere provided that the maps are weakly mixing with an ergodic extra condition. The proof provides a example of non-singular dynamical system for which the maximal ergodic inequality does not hold. We further get that the non-singular strategy to solve the pointwise convergence of the Furstenberg ergodic averages fails.
We define a class of discrete abelian group extensions of rank-one transformations and establish necessary and sufficient conditions for these extensions to be power weakly mixing. We show that all members of this class are multiply recurrent. We then study conditions sufficient for showing that cartesian products of transformations are conservative for a class of invertible infinite measure-preserving transformations and provide examples of these transformations.
We introduce a wide class of countable groups, called properly proximal, which contains all non-amenable bi-exact groups, all non-elementary convergence groups, and all lattices in non-compact semi-simple Lie groups, but excludes all inner amenable groups. We show that crossed product II$_1$ factors arising from free ergodic probability measure preserving actions of groups in this class have at most one weakly compact Cartan subalgebra, up to unitary conjugacy. As an application, we obtain the first $W^*$-strong rigidity results for compact actions of $SL_d(\mathbb Z)$ for $d \geq 3$.
In this paper we discuss how to define an appropriate notion of weak topology in the Wasserstein space $(\mathcal{P}_2(H),W_2)$ of Borel probability measures with finite quadratic moment on a separable Hilbert space $H$. We will show that such a topology inherits many features of the usual weak topology in Hilbert spaces, in particular the weak closedness of geodesically convex closed sets and the Opial property characterizing weakly convergent sequences. We apply this notion to the approximation of fixed points for a non-expansive map in a weakly closed subset of $\mathcal{P}_2(H)$ and of min…
Given an ergodic dynamical system $(X,T,μ)$, and $U\subset X$ measurable with $μ(U)>0$, let $μ(U)τ_U(x)$ denote the normalized hitting time of $x\in X$ to $U$. We prove that given a sequence $(U_n)$ with $μ(U_n)\to 0$, the distribution function of the normalized hitting times to $U_n$ converges weakly to some sub-probability distribution $F$ if and only if the distribution function of the normalized return time converges weakly to some distribution function $\tilde F$, and that in the converging case, $$ F(t)=\int_0^t(1-\tilde F(s))ds, t\ge 0.\tag$\diamondsuit$ $$ This in particular characteri…
We prove that ergodic measures on one-sided shift spaces are uniformly scaling in the sense of Gavish. That is, given a shift ergodic measure we prove that at almost every point the scenery distributions weakly converge to a common distribution on the space of measures. Moreover, we give an explicit description of the limiting distribution in terms of a `reverse Jacobian' function associated with the corresponding measure on the space of left infinite sequences.
Let $T$ be a weakly almost periodic (WAP) linear operator on a Banach space $X$. A sequence of scalars $(a_n)_{n\ge 1}$ {\it modulates} $T$ on $Y \subset X$ if $\frac1n\sum_{k=1}^n a_kT^k x$ converges in norm for every $x \in Y$. We obtain a sufficient condition for $(a_n)$ to modulate every WAP operator on the space of its flight vectors, a necessary and sufficient condition for (weakly) modulating every WAP operator $T$ on the space of its (weakly) stable vectors, and sufficient conditions for modulating every contraction on a Hilbert space on the space of its weakly stable vectors. We study…
We characterize the points that satisfy Birkhoff's ergodic theorem under certain computability conditions in terms of algorithmic randomness. First, we use the method of cutting and stacking to show that if an element x of the Cantor space is not Martin-Lof random, there is a computable measure-preserving transformation and a computable set that witness that x is not typical with respect to the ergodic theorem, which gives us the converse of a theorem by V'yugin. We further show that if x is weakly 2-random, then it satisfies the ergodic theorem for all computable measure-preserving transforma…
We exhibit rationally ergodic, weakly mixing measure preserving transformations which are not subsequence rationally weakly mixing and give a condition for smoothness of renewal sequences.
We show that some $C^*$--dynamical systems obtained by "quantizing" classical ones on the free Fock space, enjoy very strong ergodic properties. Namely, if the classical dynamical system $(X, T, \m)$ is ergodic but not weakly mixing, then the resulting quantized system $(\gg,\a)$ is uniquely ergodic (w.r.t the fixed point algebra) but not uniquely weak mixing. The same happens if we quantize a classical system $(X, T, \m)$ which is weakly mixing but not mixing. In this case, the quantized system is uniquely weak mixing but not uniquely mixing. Finally, a quantized system arising from a classic…
