Given an ergodic dynamical system $(X,T,μ)$, and $U\subset X$ measurable with $μ(U)>0$, let $μ(U)τ_U(x)$ denote the normalized hitting time of $x\in X$ to $U$. We prove that given a sequence $(U_n)$ with $μ(U_n)\to 0$, the distribution function of the normalized hitting times to $U_n$ converges weakly to some sub-probability distribution $F$ if and only if the distribution function of the normalized return time converges weakly to some distribution function $\tilde F$, and that in the converging case, $$ F(t)=\int_0^t(1-\tilde F(s))ds, t\ge 0.\tag$\diamondsuit$ $$ This in particular characterizes asymptotics for hitting times, and shows that the asymptotics for return times is exponential if and only if the one for hitting times is too.
We discuss limit distributions for hitting-time functions of certain exceptional families of asymptotically rare events for ergodic probability preserving transformations. The abstract core is an inducing argument. The latter applies, for example, to shrinking intervals around periodic points (both uniformly expanding and neutral) of certain finite measure preserving interval maps. In particular, we give a complete answer to a question raised in [FFTV].
We prove that for any $α$-mixing stationnary process the hitting time of any $n$-string $A_n$ converges, when suitably normalized, to an exponential law. We identify the normalization constant $λ(A_n)$. A similar statement holds also for the return time. To establish this result we prove two other results of independent interest. First, we show a relation between the rescaled hitting time and the rescaled return time, generalizing a theorem by Haydn, Lacroix and Vaienti. Second, we show that for positive entropy systems, the probability of observing any $n$-string in $n$ consecutive observatio…
We construct a zero-entropy weakly mixing finite-valued process with the exponential limit law for return resp. hitting times. This limit law is obtained in almost every point, taking the limit along the full sequence of cylinders around the point. Till now, the exponential limit law for return resp. hitting times, taking the limit along the full sequence of cylinders, have been obtained only in positive-entropy processes satisfying some strong mixing conditions of Rossenblatt type.
We introduce estimators for the entropy production of a Gibbsian process based on the observation of a single or two typical trajectories. These estimators are built with adequate hitting and return times. We then study their convergence and fluctuation properties. This provides statisticals test for the irreversibility of Gibbsian processes.
In this paper we study the distribution of hitting and return times for observations of dynamical systems. We apply this results to get an exponential law for the distribution of hitting and return times for rapidly mixing random dynamical systems. In particular, it allows us to obtain an exponential law for random expanding maps, random circle maps expanding in average and randomly perturbed dynamical systems.
We study convergence of return- and hitting-time distributions of small sets $E_{k}$ with $μ(E_{k})\rightarrow0$ in recurrent ergodic dynamical systems preserving an infinite measure $μ$. Some properties which are easy in finite measure situations break down in this null-recurrent setup. However, in the presence of a uniform set $Y$ with wandering rate regularly varying of index $1-α$ with $α\in(0,1]$, there is a scaling function suitable for all subsets of $Y$. In this case, we show that return distributions for the $E_{k}$ converge iff the corresponding hitting time distributions do, and we …
Motivated by entropy estimation from chaotic time series, we provide a comprehensive analysis of hitting times of cylinder sets in the setting of Gibbsian sources. We prove two strong approximation results from which we easily deduce pointwise convergence to entropy, lognormal fluctuations, precise large deviation estimates and an explicit formula for the hitting-time multifractal spectrum. It follows from our analysis that the hitting time of a $n$-cylinder fluctuates in the same way as the inverse measure of this $n$-cylinder at "small scales", but in a different way at "large scales". In pa…
We consider discrete time dynamical systems and show the link between Hitting Time Statistics (the distribution of the first time points land in asymptotically small sets) and Extreme Value Theory (distribution properties of the partial maximum of stochastic processes). This relation allows to study Hitting Time Statistics with tools from Extreme Value Theory, and vice versa. We apply these results to non-uniformly hyperbolic systems and prove that a multimodal map with an absolutely continuous invariant measure must satisfy the classical extreme value laws (with no extra condition on the spee…
For flows whose return map on a cross section has sufficient mixing property, we show that the hitting time distribution of the flow to balls is exponential in limit. We also establish a link between the extreme value distribution of the flow and its hitting time distribution, generalizing a previous work by Freitas et al. in the discrete time case. Finally we show that for maps that can be modeled by Young`s tower with polynomial tail, the extreme value law holds.
Haydn, Lacroix and Vaienti [Ann. Probab. 33 (2005)] proved that, for a given ergodic map, the entry time distribution converges in the small target limit, if and only if the corresponding return time distribution converges. The present note explains how entry and return times can be interpreted in terms of stationary point processes and their Palm distribution. This permits a generalization of the results by Haydn et al. to non-ergodic maps and continuous-time dynamical systems.
We establish abstract limit theorems which provide sufficient conditions for a sequence $(A_{l})$ of rare events in an ergodic probability preserving dynamical system to exhibit Poisson asymptotics, and for the consecutive positions inside the $A_{l}$ to be asymptotically iid (spatiotemporal Poisson limits). The limit theorems only use information on what happens to $A_{l}$ before some time $τ_{l}$ which is of order $o(1/μ(A_{l}))$. In particular, no assumptions on the asymptotic behavior of the system akin to classical mixing conditions are used. We also discuss some general questions about t…
The principal results proved in this expository thesis are the IP polynomial Szemerédi theorem for nilpotent groups and the multiple term return times theorem with nilsequence weights. It also contains extensions of the convergence theorem for nilpotent polynomial multiple ergodic averages and the return times theorem to locally compact second countable amenable groups.
For ergodic measures we consider the return and entry times for a measure preserving transformation and its induced map on a positive measure subset. We then show that the limiting entry and return times distributions are the same for the induced maps as for the map on the entire system. The only assumptions needed are ergodicity and that the measures of the sets along which the limit is taken go to zero.
We prove that if a system has superpolynomial (faster than any power law) decay of correlations (with respect to Lipschitz observables) then the time $τ(x,S_{r})$ needed for a typical point $x$ to enter for the first time a set $S_{r}=\{x:f(x)\leq r\}$ which is a sublevel of a Lipschitz funcion $f$ scales as $\frac{1}{μ(S_{r})}$ i.e. \begin{equation*} \underset{r\to 0}{\lim }\frac{\log τ(x,S_{r})}{-\log r}=\underset{r\to 0}{\lim}\frac{\log μ(S_{r})}{\log (r)}. \end{equation*} This generalizes a previous result obtained for balls. We will also consider relations with the return time distributio…
We consider conservative ergodic measure preserving transformations on infinite measure spaces and investigate the asymptotic behaviour of distorted return time processes with respect to sets satisfying a type of Darling-Kac condition. We identify two critical cases for which we prove uniform distribution laws. For this we introduce the notion of uniformly returning sets and discuss some of their properties.
We study decay of correlations, the asymptotic distribution of hitting times and fluctuations of the return times for a robust class of multidimensional non-uniformly hyperbolic transformations. Oliveira and Viana [15] proved that there is a unique equilibrium state for a large class of non- uniformly expanding transformations and Holder continuous potentials with small variation. For an open class of potentials with small variation, we prove quasi-compactness of the Ruelle-Perron-Frobenius operator in a space $V_θ$ of functions with essential bounded variation that strictly contain Holder con…
We prove that given a measure preserving system $(X,\mathcal{B},μ,T_1,\dots,T_d)$ with commuting, ergodic transformations $T_i$ such that $T_iT_j^{-1}$ are ergodic for all $i \neq j$, the multicorrelation sequence $a(n)=\int_X f_0 \cdot T_1^nf_1 \cdot \dotso \cdot T_d^n f_d \ dμ$ can be decomposed as $a(n)=a_{\textrm{st}}(n)+a_{\textrm{er}}(n)$, where $a_{\textrm{st}}$ is a uniform limit of $d$-step nilsequences and $a_{\textrm{er}}$ is a nullsequence (that is, $\lim_{N-M \to \infty} \frac{1}{N-M} \sum_{n=M}^{N-1} |a_{\textrm{er}}|^2=0$). Under some additional ergodicity conditions on $T_1,\do…
We prove a new result in the area of hitting time statistics. Currently, there is a lot of papers showing that the first entry times into cylinders or balls are often faster than the Birkhoff's Ergodic Theorem would suggest. We provide an opposite counterpart to these results by proving that the hitting times into shrinking balls are also often much larger than these theorems would suggest, by showing that for many dynamical systems $$ \displaystyle \limsup_{r\to 0} τ_{B(y,r)}(x)μ(B(y,r))=+\infty, $$ for an appropriately large, at least of full measure, set of points $y$ and $x$. We first do t…
We present a simple way to produce good weights for several types of ergodic theorem including the Wiener-Wintner type multiple return time theorem and the multiple polynomial ergodic theorem. These weights are deterministic and come from orbits of certain bounded linear operators on Banach spaces. This extends the known results for nilsequences and return time sequences of the form (g(S^ny)) for a measure preserving system (Y,S) and g\in L^\infty(Y), avoiding in the latter case the problem of finding the full measure set of appropriate points y.
We prove a large deviation result for return times of the orbits of a dynamical system in a $r$-neighbourhood of an initial point $x$. Our result may be seen as a differentiable version of the work by Jain and Bansal who considered the return time of a stationary and ergodic process defined in a space of infinite sequences.
We study the dynamics of piecewise affine surface homeomorphisms from the point of view of their entropy. Under the assumption of positive topological entropy, we establish the existence of finitely many ergodic and invariant probability measures maximizing entropy and prove a multiplicative lower bound for the number of periodic points. This is intended as a step towards the understanding of surface diffeomorphisms. We proceed by building a jump transformation, using not first returns but carefully selected "good" returns to dispense with Markov partitions. We control these good returns throu…
We show that the entry and return times for dynamic balls (Bowen balls) is exponential for systems that have an $α$-mixing invariant measure with certain regularities. We also show that systems modeled by Young's tower has exponential hitting time distribution for dynamical balls
We show the $L^2$-convergence of continuous time ergodic averages of a product of functions evaluated at return times along polynomials. These averages are the continuous time version of the averages appearing in Furstenberg's proof of Szemerédi's Theorem. For each average we show that it is sufficient to prove convergence on special factors, the Host-Kra factors, which have the structure of a nilmanifold. We also give a description of the limit. In particular, if the polynomials are independent over the real numbers then the limit is the product of the integrals. We further show that if the c…
We investigate quantitative recurrence in systems having an infinite measure. We extend the Ornstein-Weiss theorem for a general class of infinite systems estimating return time in decreasing sequences of cylinders. Then we restrict to a class of one dimensional maps with indifferent fixed points and calculate quantitative recurrence in sequences of balls, obtaining that this is related to the behavior of the map near the fixed points.
We prove that for any bounded functions $f_1, f_2$ on a measure-preserving dynamical system $(X,T)$ and any distinct integers $a_1, a_2$, for almost every $x$ the sequence $$ f_1(T^{a_1 n}x) f_2(T^{a_2 n}x) $$ is a good weight for the pointwise ergodic theorem.
In the present paper, we study the distribution of the return points in the fibers for a RDS (random dynamical systems) nonuniformly expanding preserving an ergodic probability, we also show the abundance of nonlacunarity of hyperbolic times that are obtained along the orbits through the fibers. We conclude that any ergodic measure with positive Lyapunov exponents satisfies the nonuniform specification property between fibers. As consequences, we prove that any expanding measure is the limit of probability measure whose measures of disintegration on the fibers are supported by a finite number …
An ergodic study of Painleve VI is developed. The chaotic nature of its Poincare return map is established for almost all loops. The exponential growth of the numbers of periodic solutions is also shown. Principal ingredients of the arguments are a moduli-theoretical formulation of Painleve VI, a Riemann-Hilbert correspondence, the dynamical system of a birational map on a cubic surface, and the Lefschetz fixed point formula.
We study limit laws for return time processes defined on infinite conservative ergodic measure preserving dynamical systems. Especially for the critical cases with purely atomic limiting distribution we derive distorted processes posessing non-degenerated limits. For these processes also large deviation asymptotics are stated. The Farey map is used as an illustrating example giving new insides into the metric number theory of continued fractions.
Assume that $T$ is a conservative ergodic measure preserving transformation of the infinite measure space $(X,\mathcal{A},μ)$.We study the asymptotic behaviour of occupation times of certain subsets of infinite measure. Specifically, we prove a Darling-Kac type distributional limit theorem for occupation times of barely infinite components which are separated from the rest of the space by a set of finite measure with c.f.-mixing return process. In the same setup we show that the ratios of occupation times of two components separated in this way diverge almost everywhere. These abstract results…
From a physical/dynamical system perspective, the potential well represents the proportional mass of points that escape the neighbourhood of a given point. In the last 20 years, several works have shown the importance of this quantity to obtain precise approximations for several recurrence time distributions in mixing stochastic processes and dynamical systems. Besides providing a review of the different scaling factors used in the literature in recurrence times, the present work contributes with two new results: (1) for $ϕ$-mixing and $ψ$-mixing processes, we give a new exponential approximat…
We consider an ergodic process on finitely many states, with positive entropy. Our first main result asserts that the distribution function of the normalized waiting time for the first visit to a small (i.e., over a long block) cylinder set $B$ is, for majority of such cylinders and up to epsilon, dominated by the exponential distribution function $1-e^{-t}$. That is, the occurrences of so understood "rare event" $B$ along the time axis can appear either with gap sizes of nearly exponential distribution (like in the independent Bernoulli process), or they "attract" each-other. Our second main …
We prove Bourgain's Return Times Theorem for a range of exponents $p$ and $q$ that are outside the duality range. An oscillation result is used to prove hitherto unknown almost everywhere convergence for the signed average analog of Bourgain's averages. As an immediate corollary we obtain a Wiener-Wintner type of result for the ergodic Hilbert series.
We study Poincaré recurrence from a purely geometrical viewpoint. We prove that the metric entropy is given by the exponential growth rate of return times to dynamical balls. This is the geometrical counterpart of Ornstein-Weiss theorem. Moreover, we show that minimal return times to dynamical balls grow linearly with respect to its length. Finally, some interesting relations between recurrence, dimension, entropy and Lyapunov exponents of ergodic measures are given.
We investigate the relations holding among generalized dimensions of invariant measures in dynamical systems and similar quantities defined by the scaling of global averages of powers of return times. Because of a heuristic use of Kac theorem, these latter have been used in place of the former in numerical and experimental investigations; to mark this distinction, we call them return time dimensions. We derive a full set of inequalities linking measure and return time dimensions and we comment on their optimality with the aid of two maps due to von Neumann -- Kakutani and to Gaspard -- Wang. W…
We consider the return times dynamics to Bowen balls for continuous maps on metric spaces which have invariant probability measures with certain mixing properties. These mixing properties are satisfied for instance by systems that allow Young tower constructions. We show that the higher order return times to Bowen balls are in the limit Poisson distributed. We also provide a general result for the asymptotic behavior of the recurrence time for Bowen balls for ergodic systems and those with specification.
Results of Wyner and Ziv and of Ornstein and Weiss show that if one observes the first k outputs of a finite-valued ergodic process, then the waiting time until this block appears again is almost surely asymptotic to $2^{hk}$, where $h$ is the entropy of the process. We examine this phenomenon when the allowed return times are restricted to some subset of times, and generalize the results to processes parameterized by other discrete amenable groups. We also obtain a uniform density version of the waiting time results: For a process on $s$ symbols, within a given realization, the density of the…
The goal of this paper is to survey the history, development and current status of the Return Times Theorem and its many extensions and variations. Let $(X, \mathcal{F}, μ)$ be a finite measure space and let $T:X \rightarrow X$ be a measure preserving transformation. Perhaps the oldest result in ergodic theory is that of Poincaré's Recurrence Principle which states: For any set $A \in \mathcal{F}$, the set of points $x$ of $A$ such that $T^nx$ is not in the set $A$ for all $n > 0$ has zero measure. This says that almost every point of $A$ returns to $A$. In fact, almost every point of $A$ retu…
We prove a general ergodic-theoretic result concerning the return time statistic, which, properly understood, sheds some new light on the common sense phenomenon known as {\it the law of series}. Let \proc be an ergodic process on finitely many states, with positive entropy. We show that the distribution function of the normalized waiting time for the first visit to a small cylinder set $B$ is, for majority of such cylinders and up to epsilon, dominated by the exponential distribution function $1-e^{-t}$. This fact has the following interpretation: The occurrences of such a "rare event" $B$ ca…
