We prove that systems satisfying the specification property are saturated in the sense that the topological entropy of the set of generic points of any invariant measure is equal to the measure-theoretic entropy of the measure. We study Banach valued Birkhoff ergodic averages and obtain a variational principle for its topological entropy spectrum. As application, we examine a particular example concerning with the set of real numbers for which the frequencies of occurrences in their dyadic expansions of infinitely many words are prescribed. This relies on our explicit determination of a maximal entropy measure.
We show that there exists a universal gap in the failure of the ergodic theorem for symmetric Birkhoff sums in infinite ergodic theory. In addition, an application of this result to a question of fluctuations of the Birkhoff integrals of horocyclic flows on geometrically finite surfaces is given.
Ergodic optimization is the study of extremal values of asymptotic dynamical quantities such as Birkhoff averages or Lyapunov exponents, and of the orbits or invariant measures that attain them. We discuss some results and problems.
We prove maximal inequalities for concentric ball and spherical shell averages on a general Gromov hyperbolic group, in arbitrary probability preserving actions of the group. Under an additional condition, satisfied for example by all groups acting isometrically and properly discontinuously on CAT(-1) spaces, we prove a pointwise ergodic theorem with respect to a sequence of probability measures supported on concentric spherical shells.
We consider sequences of Davenport type or Gelfond type and prove that sequences of Davenport exponent larger than $\frac{1}{2}$ are good sequences of weights for the ergodic theorem, and that the ergodic sums weighted by a sequence of strong Gelfond property is well controlled almost everywhere. We prove that for any $q$-multiplicative sequence, the Gelfond property implies the strong Gelfond property and that sequences realized by dynamical systems can be fully oscillating and have the Gelfond property.
Hopf's ratio ergodic theorem has an inherent symmetry which we exploit to provide a simplification of standard proofs of Hopf's and Birkhoff's ergodic theorems. We also present a ratio ergodic theorem for conservative transformations on a $σ$-finite measure space, generalizing Kingman's ergodic theorem for subadditive sequences and generalizing previous results by Akcoglu and Sucheston.
We show that the absolutely normalized, symmetric Birkhoff sums of positive integrable functions in infinite, ergodic systems never converge pointwise even though they may be almost surely bounded away from zero and infinity.
We introduce computable actions of computable groups and prove the following versions of effective Birkhoff's ergodic theorem. Let $Γ$ be a computable amenable group, then there always exists a canonically computable tempered two-sided Følner sequence $(F_n)_{n \geq 1}$ in $Γ$. For a computable, measure-preserving, ergodic action of $Γ$ on a Cantor space $\{0,1\}^{\mathbb N}$ endowed with a computable probability measure $μ$, it is shown that for every bounded lower semicomputable function $f$ on $\{0,1\}^{\mathbb N}$ and for every Martin-Löf random $ω\in \{0,1\}^{\mathbb N}$ the equality \[ \…
A remarkable theorem of Besicovitch is that an integrable function $f$ on $\mathbb{R}^2$ is strongly differentiable if and only if its associated strong maximal function $M_S f$ is finite a.e. We provide an analogue of Besicovitch's result in the context of ergodic theory that provides a generalization of Birkhoff's Ergodic Theorem. In particular, we show that if $f$ is a measurable function on a standard probability space and $T$ is an invertible measure-preserving transformation on that space, then the ergodic averages of $f$ with respect to $T$ converge a.e. if and only if the associated er…
We obtain estimates on the uniform convergence rate of the Birkhoff average of a continuous observable over torus translations and affine skew product toral transformations. The convergence rate depends explicitly on the modulus of continuity of the observable and on the arithmetic properties of the frequency defining the transformation. Furthermore, we show that for the one dimensional torus translation, these estimates are nearly optimal.
Given a compact metric space $X$ and a probability measure in the $σ-$algebra of Borel subsets of $X$, we will establish a dominated convergence theorem for ultralimits of sequences of integrable maps and apply it to deduce a non-standard ergodic-like theorem for any probability measure.
It is well-known that a strict analogue of the Birkhoff Ergodic Theorem in infinite ergodic theory is trivial; it states that for any infinite-measure-preserving ergodic system the Birkhoff average of every integrable function is almost everywhere zero. Nor does a different rescaling of the Birkhoff sum that leads to a non-degenerate pointwise limit exist. In this paper we give a version of Birkhoff's theorem for conservative, ergodic, infinite-measure-preserving dynamical systems where instead of integrable functions we use certain elements of $L^\infty$, which we generically call global obse…
A theorem of Kučera states that given a Martin-Löf random infinite binary sequence ω and an effectively open set A of measure less than 1, some tail of ω is not in A. We first prove several results in the same spirit and generalize them via an effective version of a weak form of Birkhoff's ergodic theorem. We then use this result to get a stronger form of it, namely a very general effective version of Birkhoff's ergodic theorem, which improves all the results previously obtained in this direction, in particular those of V'Yugin, Nandakumar and Hoyrup, Rojas.
A volume growth-based proof of the Multiplicative Ergodic Theorem for Banach spaces is presented, following the approach of Ruelle for cocycles acting on a Hilbert space. As a consequence, we obtain a volume growth interpretation for the Lyapunov exponents of a Banach space cocycle.
We study the ergodic properties of generic continuous dynamical systems on compact manifolds. As a main result we prove that generic homeomorphisms have convergent Birkhoff averages under continuous observables at Lebesgue almost every point. In spite of this, when the underlying manifold has dimension greater than one, generic homeomorphisms have no physical measure --- a somewhat strange result which stands in sharp contrast to current trends in generic differentiable dynamics. Similar results hold for generic continuous maps. To further explore the mysterious behaviour of $C^0$ generic dyna…
We study fluctuations of ergodic averages generated by actions of amenable groups. In the setting of an abstract ergodic theorem for locally compact second countable amenable groups acting on uniformly convex Banach spaces, we deduce a highly uniform bound on the number of fluctuations of the ergodic average for a class of Følner sequences satisfying an analogue of Lindenstrauss's temperedness condition. Equivalently, we deduce a uniform bound on the number of fluctuations over long distances for arbitrary Følner sequences. As a corollary, these results imply associated bounds for a continuous…
We prove that the Birkhoff pointwise ergodic theorem and the Oseledets multiplicative ergodic theorem hold for every flat surface in almost every direction. The proofs rely on the strong law of large numbers, and on recent rigidity results for the action of the upper triangular subgroup of SL(2,R) on the moduli space of flat surfaces. Most of the results also use a theorem about continuity of splittings of the Kontsevich-Zorich cocycle recently proved by S. Filip.
We study the multifractal analysis for smooth dynamical systems in dimension one. It is characterized the Hausdorff dimension of the level set obtained from the Birkhoff averages of a continuous function by the local dimensions of hyperbolic measures for a topologically mixing $C^2$ map modelled by an abstract dynamical system. A characterization which corresponds to above is also given for the ergodic basins of invariant probability measures. And it is shown that the complement of the set of quasi-regular points carries full Hausdorff dimension.
In this paper, we study the topological spectrum of weighted Birkhoff averages over aperiodic and irreducible subshifts of finite type. We show that for a uniformly continuous family of potentials, the spectrum is continuous and concave over its domain. In case of typical weights with respect to some ergodic quasi-Bernoulli measure, we determine the spectrum. Moreover, in case of full shift and under the assumption that the potentials depend only on the first coordinate, we show that our result is applicable for regular weights, like Möbius sequence.
Often topological classes of one-dimensional dynamical systems are finite codimension smooth manifolds. We describe a method to prove this sort of statement that we believe can be applied in many settings. In this work we will implement it for piecewise expanding maps. The most important step will be the identification of infinitesimal deformations with primitives of Birkhoff sums (up to addition of a Lipschitz function), that allows us to use the ergodic properties of piecewise expanding maps to study the regularity of infinitesimal deformations.
In this paper we mainly study the dynamical complexity of Birkhoff ergodic average under the simultaneous observation of any number of continuous functions. These results can be as generalizations of [6,35] etc. to study Birkhorff ergodic average from one (or finite) observable function to any number of observable functions from the dimensional perspective. For any topological dynamical system with $g-$almost product property and uniform separation property, we show that any {\it jointly-irregular set}(i.e., the intersection of a series of $ϕ-$irregular sets over several continuous functions) …
Birkhoff's theorem states that for an ergodic automorphism, the time averages converge to the space average. Given sequence $ψ(n)\to+0$, U. Krengel proved that for any ergodic automorphism there is an indicator such that the corresponding time averages converged a.e. with a rate slower than $ψ$. We prove again similar statements answering a question of I. Podvigin in passing.
For linear random dynamical systems in a separable Banach space $X$, we derived a series of Krein-Rutman type Theorems with respect to co-invariant cone family with rank-$k$, which present a (quasi)-equivalence relation between the measurably co-invariant cone family and the measurably dominated splitting of $X$. Moreover, such (quasi)-equivalence relation turns out to be an equivalence relation whenever (i) $k=1$; or (ii) in the frame of the Multiplicative Ergodic Theorem with certain Lyapunov exponent being greater than the negative infinity. For the second case, we thoroughly investigated t…
Consider a homeomorphism $f$ defined on a compact metric space $X$ and a continuous map $ϕ\colon X \to \mathbb{R}$. We provide an abstract criterion, called \emph{control at any scale with a long sparse tail} for a point $x\in X$ and the map $ϕ$, that guarantees that any weak$\ast$ limit measure $μ$ of the Birkhoff average of Dirac measures $\frac1n\sum_0^{n-1}δ(f^i(x))$ is such that $μ$-almost every point $y$ has a dense orbit in $X$ and the Birkhoff average of $ϕ$ along the orbit of $y$ is zero. As an illustration of the strength of this criterion, we prove that the diffeomorphisms with nonh…
In this paper, we first prove the strong Birkhoff Ergodic Theorem for subharmonic functions with the irrational shift on the Torus. Then, it is applied to the analytic quasi-periodic Jacobi cocycles. We show that if the Lyapunov exponent of these cocycles is positive at one point, then it is positive on an interval centered at this point for suitable frequency and coupling numbers. We also prove that the Lyapunov exponent is Hölder continuous in $E$ on this interval and calculate the expression of its length. What's more, if the coupling number of the potential is large, then the Lyapunov expo…
Given a space $X$, a $σ$-algebra $\mathfrak{B}$ on $X$ and a measurable map $T:X \to X$, we say that a measure $μ$ is half-invariant if, for any $B \in \mathfrak{B}$, we have $μ(T^{-1}(B)\leq μ(B)$. In this note we present a generalization of Birkhoff's Ergodic theorem to $σ$-finite half-invariant measures.
We derive results on the distribution of directions of saddle connections on translation surfaces using only the Birkhoff ergodic theorem applied to the geodesic flow on the moduli space of translation surfaces. Our techniques, together with an approximation argument, also give an alternative proof of a weak version of a classical theorem in multi-dimensional Diophantine approximation due to W. Schmidt \cite{SchmidtMetrical, SchmidtMetrical2}. The approximation argument allows us to deduce the Birkhoff genericity of almost all lattices in a certain submanifold of the space of unimodular lattic…
In the present paper we prove weighted ergodic theorems and multiparameter weighted ergodic theorems for positive contractions acting on $L_p(\hat{\nabla},\hatμ)$. Our main tool is the use of methods of measurable bundles of Banach-Kantorovich lattices.
By definition, a map quasiperiodic on a set $X$ if the map is conjugate to a pure rotation. Suppose we have a trajectory $(x_n)$ that we suspect is quasiperiodic. How do we determine if it is? In this paper we show how to compute the conjugacy map using only knowledge of $(x_n)$. Our main tool is a variant of Birkhoff averages. The Birkhoff Ergodic Theorem asserts that time averages of a function evaluated along a trajectory of length $N$ converge to the space average, the integral of $f$, as $N\to\infty$, for ergodic dynamical systems. But that convergence can be slow. Instead of uniform aver…
The Birkhoff Ergodic Theorem concludes that time averages, that is, Birkhoff averages, $Σ_{n=1}^N f(x_n)/N$ of a function $f$ along an ergodic trajectory $(x_n)$ of a function $T$ converges to the space average $\int f dμ$, where $μ$ is the unique invariant probability measure. Convergence of the time average to the space average is slow. We introduce a modified average of $f(x_n)$ by giving very small weights to the "end" terms when $n$ is near $0$ or $N$. When $(x_n)$ is a trajectory on a quasiperiodic torus and $f$ and $T$ are $C^\infty$, we show that our weighted Birkhoff averages converge…
We provide an explicit uniform bound on the local stability of ergodic averages in uniformly convex Banach spaces. Our result can also be viewed as a finitary version in the sense of T. Tao of the Mean Ergodic Theorem for such spaces and so generalizes similar results obtained for Hilbert spaces by Avigad, Gerhardy and Towsner (arXiv:0706.1512v2 [math.DS]) and T. Tao (arXiv:0707.1117v1 [math.DS]).
We show that singular stochastic delay differential equations (SDDEs) induce cocycle maps on a field of Banach spaces. A general Multiplicative Ergodic Theorem on fields of Banach spaces is proved and applied to linear SDDEs. In Part II of this article, we use our results to prove a stable manifold theorem for non-linear singular SDDEs.
One of the fundamental results of ergodic optimisation asserts that for any dynamical system on a compact metric space $X$ and for any Banach space of continuous real-valued functions on $X$ which embeds densely in $C(X)$ there exists a residual set of functions in that Banach space for which the maximising measure is unique. We extend this result by showing that this residual set is additionally prevalent, answering a question of J. Bochi and Y. Zhang.
In this work we present an example of C^\infty-diffeomorphism of a compact 4-manifold such that it admits a global SRB measure μbut for which the special ergodic theorem doesn't hold. Namely, for this transformation there exist a continuous function ϕand a positive constant αsuch that the following holds: the set of the initial points for which the Birkhoff time averages of the function ϕdiffer from its μ--space average by at least αhas zero Lebesgue measure but full Hausdorff dimension.
The Birkhoff Ergodic Theorem concludes that time averages, i.e., Birkhoff averages, $Σ_{n=0}^{N-1} f(x_n)/N$ of a function $f$ along a length $N$ ergodic trajectory $(x_n)$ of a function $T$ converge to the space average $\int f dμ$, where $μ$ is the unique invariant probability measure. Convergence of the time average to the space average is slow. We introduce a modified average of $f(x_n)$ by giving very small weights to the "end" terms when $n$ is near $0$ or $N-1$. When $(x_n)$ is a trajectory on a quasiperiodic torus and $f$ and $T$ are $C^\infty$, we show that our weighted Birkhoff avera…
The classical Birkhoff ergodic theorem in its most popular version says that the time average along a single typical trajectory of a dynamical system is equal to the space average with respect to the ergodic invariant distribution. This result is one of the cornerstones of the entire ergodic theory and its numerous applications. Two questions related to this subject will be addressed: how large is the set of typical trajectories, in particular in the case when there are no invariant distributions, and how the answer is connected to properties of the so called natural measures (limits of images…
The topological entropy of various gap-sets on periodic-like recurrence and Birkhoff regularity were considered in [69] but some Banach recurrence and Lyapunov regularity are not considered. In this paper we introduce five new levels on Banach recurrence and show they all carry full topological entropy, and simultaneously combine with Lyapunov regularity to get some refined theory on mixed multifractal analysis of [8,29]. In this process, we strengthen Pfister and Sullivan's result of [58] from saturated property to transitively-saturated property (and from single-saturated property to transit…
We extract quantitative information (specifically, a rate of metastability in the sense of Terence Tao) from a proof due to Kazuo Kobayasi and Isao Miyadera, which shows strong convergence for Cesàro means of nonexpansive maps on Banach spaces.
We prove a central limit theorem for the real and imaginary part and the absolute value of the Riemann zeta-function sampled along a vertical line in the critical strip with respect to an ergodic transformation similar to the Boolean transformation. This result complements a result by Steuding who has proven a strong law of large numbers for the same system. As a side result we state a general central limit theorem for a class of unbounded observables on the real line over the same ergodic transformation. The proof is based on the transfer operator method.
We develop a thermodynamic formalism for quasi-multiplicative potentials on a countable symbolic space and apply these results to the dimension theory of infinitely generated self-affine sets. The first application is a generalisation of Falconer's dimension formula to include typical infinitely generated self-affine sets and show the existence of an ergodic invariant measure of full dimension whenever the pressure function has a root. Considering the multifractal analysis of Birkhoff averages of general potentials $Φ$ taking values in $\R^{\N}$, we give a formula for the Hausdorff dimension o…
Suppose that G is a compact Abelian topological group, m is the Haar measure on G and f is a measurable function. Given (n_k), a strictly monotone increasing sequence of integers we consider the nonconventional ergodic/Birkhoff averages M_N^αf(x). The f-rotation set is Gamma_f={α\in G: M_N^α f(x) converges for m a.e. x as N\to \infty .} We prove that if G is a compact locally connected Abelian group and f: G -> R is a measurable function then from m(Gamma_f)>0 it follows that f \in L^1(G). A similar result is established for ordinary Birkhoff averages if G=Z_{p}, the group of p-adic integers. …
It is known that the Dobrushin's ergodicity coefficient is one of the effective tools to study a behavior of non-homogeneous Markov chains. In the present paper, we define such an ergodicity coefficient of a positive mapping defined on ordered Banach space with a base (OBSB), and study its properties. In terms of this coefficient we prove the equivalence uniform and weak ergodicities of homogeneous Markov chains. This extends earlier results obtained in case of von Neumann algebras. Such a result allowed to establish a category theorem for uniformly ergodic Markov operators. We find necessary …
We prove a nonuniformly hyperbolic version Livšic theorem, with cocycles taking values in the group of invertible bounded linear operators on a Banach space. The result holds without the ergodicity assumption of the hyperbolic measure. Moreover, We also prove a $μ$-continuous solution of the cohomological equation is actually Hölder continuous for the uniform hyperbolic system.
We extend a recent result of Tim Austin (see arXiv:0905.0515) to the L^1 setting, thus providing a general version of the Birkhoff ergodic theorem for functions taking values in nonpositively curved spaces. In this setting, the notion of a Birkhoff sum is replaced by that of a barycenter along the orbit. The construction of an appropriate barycenter map is the core of this note. In particular, we solve a problem raised by K.-T. Sturm showing that local compactness for the underlying space is superfluous for the construction (this extends a result of A. Es-Sahib and H. Heinich). As a byproduct …
We investigate the relation between the distributions appearing in the study of ergodic averages of parabolic flows (e.g. in the work of Flaminio-Forni) and the ones appearing in the study of the statistical properties of hyperbolic dynamical systems (i.e. the eigendistributions of the transfer operator). In order to avoid, as much as possible, technical issues that would cloud the basic idea, we limit ourselves to a simple flow on the torus. Our main result is that, roughly, the growth of ergodic averages of a parabolic flows is controlled by the eigenvalues of a suitable transfer operator as…
Let f be a self-map of a compact manifold M, admitting an global SRB measure μ. For a continuous test function ϕon M and a constant α>0, consider the set of the initial points for which the Birkhoff time averages of the function ϕdiffer from its μ--space average by at least α. As the measure μis an SRB one, the intersection of this set with the basin of attraction of μshould have zero Lebesgue measure. The \emph{special ergodic theorem}, whenever it holds, claims that, moreover, this intersection has the Hausdorff dimension less than the dimension of M. We prove that for Lipschitz maps, the sp…
We analyze a proof of Bruck to obtain an explicit rate of asymptotic regularity for Cesàro means in uniformly convex Banach spaces. Our rate will only depend on a norm bound and a modulus $η$ of uniform convexity. One ingredient for the proof by Bruck is a result of Pisier, which shows that every uniformly convex (in fact every uniformly nonsquare) Banach space has some Rademacher type $q>1$ with a suitable constant $C_q$. We explicitly determine $q$ and $C_q$, which only depend on the single value $η(1)$ of our modulus. Beyond these specific results, we summarize how work of Bruck has inspire…
We prove the absolute continuity of stable foliations for mappings of Banach spaces satisfying conditions consistent with time-t maps of certain classes of dissipative PDEs. This property is crucial for passing information from submanifolds transversal to the stable foliation to the rest of the phase space; it is also used in proofs of ergodicity. Absolute continuity of stable foliations is well known in finite dimensional hyperbolic theory. On Banach spaces, the absence of nice geometric properties poses some additional difficulties.
In this paper we study unimodular amenable groups. The first part is devoted to results on the existence of uniform families of epsilon-quasi tilings for these groups. In this context, constructions of Ornstein and Weiss are extended by quantitative estimates for the covering properties of the corresponding decompositions. Afterwards, we apply the developed methods to obtain an abstract ergodic theorem for a class of functions mapping subsets of a countable, amenable group into some Banach space. This significantly extends and complements the previous results of Lenz, Müller, Schwarzenberger a…
