We continue our study of the dynamics of mappings with small topological degree on (projective) complex surfaces. Previously, under mild hypotheses, we have constructed an ergodic ``equilibrium'' measure for each such mapping. Here we study the dynamical properties of this measure in detail: we give optimal bounds for its Lyapunov exponents, prove that it has maximal entropy, and show that it has product structure in the natural extension. Under a natural further assumption, we show that saddle points are equidistributed towards this measure. This generalize results that were known in the invertible case and is, to our knowledge, one among not very many instances in which a natural invariant measure for a non-invertible dynamical system is well-understood.
We study transcendental meromorphic functions having two prepole asymptotic values and no critical values. We prove that these functions acting on their Julia sets are non-ergodic, which illustrates the antithesis of the Keen-Kotus result in [KK2] on the ergodicity of another subfamily of functions with two asymptotic values and no critical values.
Let $f : X\to X$ be a dominating meromorphic map on a compact Kähler manifold $X$ of dimension $k$. We extend the notion of topological entropy $h^l_{\mathrm{top}}(f)$ for the action of $f$ on (local) analytic sets of dimension $0\leq l \leq k$. For an ergodic probability measure $ν$, we extend similarly the notion of measure-theoretic entropy $h_ν^l(f)$. Under mild hypothesis, we compute $h^l_{\mathrm{top}}(f)$ in term of the dynamical degrees of $f$. In the particular case of endomorphisms of $\mathbb{P}^2$ of degree $d$, we show that $h^1_{\mathrm{top}}(f)= \log d$ for a large class of maps…
The ultimate goal of our book is to present a unified approach to the dynamics, ergodic theory, and geometry of elliptic functions from $\C$ to $\oc$. We consider elliptic functions as a most regular class of transcendental meromorphic functions. Poles form an essential feature of such functions but the set of critical values is finite and an elliptic function is "the same" on its of its fundamental regions. In a sense this is the class of transcendental meromorphic functions which resembles rational functions most. On the other hand, the differences are huge. We will touch on them in the cour…
Let f be a dominating meromorphic self-map of a compact Kahler manifold. We give an inequality for the Lyapounov exponents of some ergodic measures of f using the metric entropy and the dynamical degrees of f. We deduce the hyperbolicity of some measures.
Let $f:X\to X$ be a dominating meromorphic map of a compact Kähler surface of large topological degree. Let $S$ be a positive closed current on $X$ of bidegree $(1,1)$. We consider an ergodic measure $ν$ of large entropy supported by $\mathrm{supp}(S)$. Defining dimensions for $ν$ and $S$, we give inequalities à la Mañé involving the Lyapunov exponents of $ν$ and those dimensions. We give dynamical applications of those inequalities.
The ergodic theory and geometry of the Julia set of meromorphic functions on the complex plane with polynomial Schwarzian derivative is investigated under the condition that the forward trajectory of asymptotic values in the Julia set is bounded and the map $f$ restricted to its closure is expanding, the property refered to as sub-expanding. We first show the existence, uniqueness, conservativity and ergodicity of a conformal measure $m$ with minimal exponent $h$; furthermore, we show weak metrical exactness of this measure. Then we prove the existence of a $\sg$--finite invariant measure $μ$ …
We continue the study of Rokhlin entropy, an isomorphism invariant for probability-measure-preserving actions of countable groups introduced in Part I. In this paper we prove a non-ergodic finite generator theorem and use it to establish sub-additivity and semi-continuity properties of Rokhlin entropy. We also obtain formulas for Rokhlin entropy in terms of ergodic decompositions and inverse limits. Finally, we clarify the relationship between Rokhlin entropy, sofic entropy, and classical Kolmogorov--Sinai entropy. In particular, using Rokhlin entropy we give a new proof of the fact that ergod…
The third part of the paper concludes the proof of the main result --- the description of the ergodic decomposition of infinite Pickrell measures. First it is shown that the scaling limit of radial parts of finite-dimensional infinite Pickrell measures is precisely the infinite Bessel point process. It is then established that the "gaussian parameter" almost surely vanishes for our ergodic components, and the convergence to the scaling limit is then established in the space of finite measures on the space of finite measures. Finally, singularity is established for Pickrell measures correspondi…
We investigate the asymptotic structure of (possibly type III) crossed product von Neumann algebras $M = B \rtimes Γ$ arising from arbitrary actions $Γ\curvearrowright B$ of bi-exact discrete groups (e.g. free groups) on amenable von Neumann algebras. We prove a spectral gap rigidity result for the central sequence algebra $N' \cap M^ω$ of any nonamenable von Neumann subalgebra with normal expectation $N \subset M$. We use this result to show that for any strongly ergodic essentially free nonsingular action $Γ\curvearrowright (X, μ)$ of any bi-exact countable discrete group on a standard proba…
We study two properties of nonsingular and infinite measure-preserving ergodic systems: weak double ergodicity, and ergodicity with isometric coefficients. We show that there exist infinite measure-preserving transformations that are ergodic with isometric coefficients but are not weakly doubly ergodic. We also give type $\text{III}_λ$ examples of such systems, $0<λ\leq 1$. We prove that under certain hypotheses, systems that are weakly mixing are ergodic with isometric coefficients and along the way we give an example of a uniformly rigid topological dynamical system along the sequence $(n_i)…
The goals of this paper are first to describe and then to apply an ergodic-theoretic generalization of the Siegel integral formula from the geometry of numbers. The general formula will be seen to serve both as a guide and as a tool for questions concerning the distribution, in senses to be made precise, of the set of closed leaves of measured foliations subordinate to meromorphic quadratic differentials on closed Riemann surfaces.
Given $k>0$ and an Abelian countable discrete group $G$ with elements of infinite order, we construct $(i)$ rigid funny rank-one infinite measure preserving (i.m.p.) $G$-actions of ergodic index $k$, $(ii)$ 0-type funny rank-one i.m.p. $G$-actions of ergodic index $k$, $(iii)$ funny rank-one i.m.p. $G$-actions $T$ of ergodic index 2 such that the product $T\times T^{-1}$ is not ergodic. It is shown that $T\times T^{-1}$ is conservative for each funny rank-one $G$-action $T$.
We answer positively a question of Ryzhikov, namely we show that being a relatively weakly mixing extension is a comeager property in the Polish group of measure preserving transformations. We study some related classes of ergodic transformations and their interrelations. In the second part of the paper we show that for a fixed ergodic T with property A, a generic extension $\hat{T}$ of T also has the property A. Here A stands for each of the following properties: (i) having the same entropy as T, (ii) Bernoulli, (iii) K, and (iv) loosely Bernoulli.
In this paper, we introduce the concepts of the large deviations theorem of weaker types, i.e., type I, type I', type II, type II', type III, and type III', and present a systematic study of the ergodic and chaotic properties of dynamical systems satisfying the large eviations theorem of various types. Some characteristics of the ergodic measure are obtained and then applied to prove that every dynamical system satisfying the large deviations theorem of type I' is ergodic, which is equivalent to the large deviations theorem of type II' in this regard, and that every uniquely ergodic dynamical …
We show that an ergodic measure preserving action $Γ\curvearrowright (X,μ)$ of a discrete group $Γ$ on a $σ$-finite measure space $(X,μ)$ satisfies the local spectral gap property (introduced by Boutonnet, Ioana and Salehi Golsefidy) if and only if it is strongly ergodic. In fact, we prove a more general local spectral gap criterion in arbitrary von Neumann algebras. Using this criterion, we also obtain a short and elementary proof of Connes' spectral gap theorem for full $\mathrm{II}_1$ factors as well as its recent generalization to full type $\mathrm{III}$ factors.
Let $M$ be a closed 3-manifold which admits an Anosov flow. In this paper we develop a technique for constructing partially hyperbolic representatives in many mapping classes of $M$. We apply this technique both in the setting of geodesic flows on closed hyperbolic surfaces and for Anosov flows which admit transverse tori. We emphasize the similarity of both constructions through the concept of $h$-transversality, a tool which allows us to compose different mapping classes while retaining partial hyperbolicity. In the case of the geodesic flow of a closed hyperbolic surface $S$ we build stably…
We show that some $C^*$--dynamical systems obtained by "quantizing" classical ones on the free Fock space, enjoy very strong ergodic properties. Namely, if the classical dynamical system $(X, T, \m)$ is ergodic but not weakly mixing, then the resulting quantized system $(\gg,\a)$ is uniquely ergodic (w.r.t the fixed point algebra) but not uniquely weak mixing. The same happens if we quantize a classical system $(X, T, \m)$ which is weakly mixing but not mixing. In this case, the quantized system is uniquely weak mixing but not uniquely mixing. Finally, a quantized system arising from a classic…
We prove that for any free ergodic nonsingular nonamenable action Γ \actson (X,μ) of all Γ in a large class of groups including all hyperbolic groups, the associated group measure space factor $L^\infty(X) \rtimes Γ$ has L^\infty(X) as its unique Cartan subalgebra, up to unitary conjugacy. This generalizes the probability measure preserving case that was established in [PV12]. We also prove primeness and indecomposability results for such crossed products, for the corresponding orbit equivalence relations and for arbitrary amalgamated free products $M_1 *_B M_2$ over a subalgebra B of type I.
A strong submeasure on a compact metric space X is a sub-linear and bounded operator on the space of continuous functions on X. A strong submeasure is positive if it is non-decreasing. By Hahn-Banach theorem, a positive strong submeasure is the supremum of a non-empty collection of measures whose masses are uniformly bounded from above. There are many natural examples of continuous maps of the forms $f:U\rightarrow X$, where $X$ is a compact metric space and $U\subset X$ is an open dense subsets, where $f$ cannot extend to a reasonable function on $X$. We can mention cases such as: transcenden…
Let $X$ and $Y$ be Polish spaces with non-atomic Borel measures $μ$ and $ν$ of full support. Suppose that $T$ and $S$ are ergodic non-singular homeomorphisms of $(X,μ)$ and $(Y,ν)$ with continuous Radon-Nikodym derivatives. Suppose that either they are both of type $III_1$ or that they are both of type $III_λ$, $0<λ<1$ and, in the $III_λ$ case, suppose in addition that both `topological asymptotic ranges' (defined in the article) are $\logλ\cdot\Bbb Z$. Then there exist invariant dense $G_δ$-subsets $X'\subset X$ and $Y'\subset Y$ of full measure and a non-singular homeomorphism $ϕ: X' \to Y'$…
The paper describes ergodic (with respect to the Haar measure) functions in the class of all functions, which are defined on (and take values in) the ring of p-adic integers, and which satisfy (at least, locally) Lipschitz condition with coefficient 1. Equiprobable (in particular, measure-preserving) functions of this class are described also. In some cases (and especially for p=2) the descriptions are given by explicit formulae. Some of the results may be viewed as descriptions of ergodic isometric dynamical systems on p-adic unit disk. The study was motivated by the problem of pseudorandom n…
In this paper, we study the existence of SRB measures and their properties for infinite dimensional dynamical systems in a Hilbert space. We show several results including (i) if the system has a partially hyperbolic attractor with nontrivial finite dimensional unstable directions, then it has at least one SRB measure; (ii) if the attractor is uniformly hyperbolic and the system is topological mixing and the splitting is Hölder continuous, then there exists a unique SRB measure which is mixing; (iii) if the attractor is uniformly hyperbolic and the system is non-wondering and and the splitting…
