In this paper, we consider the wave equation in space dimension 3 with an energy-supercritical, focusing nonlinearity. We show that any radial solution of the equation which is bounded in the critical Sobolev space is globally defined and scatters to a linear solution. As a consequence, finite time blow-up solutions have critical Sobolev norm converging to infinity (along some sequence of times). The proof relies on the compactness/rigidity method, pointwise estimates on compact solutions obtained by the two last authors, and channels of energy arguments used by the authors in previous works on the energy-critical equation.
Given $n \in \{ 3,4,5 \}$ and $k > 1$ (resp. $\frac{4}{3} > k > 1$) if $n \in \{ 3,4 \}$ (resp. $n=5$), we prove scattering of the radial $\tilde{H}^{k}:= \dot{H}^{k}(\mathbb{R}^{n}) \cap \dot{H}^{1}(\mathbb{R}^{n})$ solutions of a focusing size-dependent log energy-supercritical Schrodinger equation for critical energies below that of the ground states, and for critical potential energies below that of the ground states.
We consider the radial defocusing nonlinear Schrödinger equations $iu_t+Δu=|u|^{p}u$ with supercritical exponent $p>4$ in four space dimensions, and prove that any radial solution that remains bounded in the critical Sobolev space must be global and scatter.
Consider the positive, radial solutions of the nonlinear biharmonic equation $Δ^2 u = u^p$. There is a critical power $p_c$ such that solutions are linearly stable if and only if $p\geq p_c$. We obtain their asymptotic expansion at infinity in the case that $p\geq p_c$.
In this paper we study the Neumann problem\begin{equation*}\begin{cases}-Δu+u=u^p \& \text{ in }B\_1 \\u \textgreater{} 0, \& \text{ in }B\_1 \\\partial\_νu=0 \& \text{ on } \partial B\_1,\end{cases}\end{equation*}and we show the existence of multiple-layer radial solutions as $p\rightarrow+\infty$.
In this work, we consider the energy-supercritical defocusing cubic nonlinear wave equation in dimension d=5 for radially symmetric initial data. We prove that an a priori bound in the critical space implies global well-posedness and scattering. The main tool that we use is a frequency localized version of the classical Morawetz inequality, inspired by recent developments in the study of the mass and energy critical nonlinear Schrödinger equation.
We prove scattering of $\tilde{H}^{k} $ solutions of the loglog energy-supercritical Schrodinger equation $i \partial_{t} u + \triangle u = |u|^{\frac{4}{n-2}} u \log^{c} {(\log{(10+|u|^{2})})}$, $0 < c < c_{n}$, $n={3,4}$, with radial data $u(0):=u_{0} \in \tilde{H}^{k} $, $k>n/2$. This is achieved, roughly speaking, by extending Bourgain's argument (see also Grillakis) and Tao's argument in high dimensions.
Given $n \in \{ 3,4 \}$ (resp. $n=5$) and $k > 1$ (resp. $\frac{4}{3} > k > 1$), we prove scattering of the radial $\tilde{H}^{k}:= \dot{H}^{k}(\mathbb{R}^{n}) \cap \dot{H}^{1}(\mathbb{R}^{n})$ solutions of the loglog energy-supercritical Schrodinger equation $i \partial_{t} u + \triangle u = |u|^{\frac{4}{n-2}}u log^γ (\log( 10 + |u|^{2} ))$ for $0 < γ< γ_{n}$. In order to control the barely supercritical nonlinearity for nonsmooth solutions, i.e solutions with data in $\tilde{H}^{k}$, $k \leq \frac{n}{2}$, we prove some Jensen-type inequalities.
We investigate the $L^2$-supercritical and $\dot{H}^1$-subcritical nonlinear Schrödinger equation in $H^1$. In \cite{G1} and \cite{yuan}, the mass-energy quantity $M(Q)^{\frac{1-s_{c}}{s_{c}}}E(Q)$ has been shown to be a threshold for the dynamical behavior of solutions of the equation. In the present paper, we study the dynamics at the critical level $M(u)^{\frac{1-s_{c}}{s_{c}}}E(u)=M(Q)^{\frac{1-s_{c}}{s_{c}}}E(Q)$ and classify the corresponding solutions using modulation theory, non-trivially generalize the results obtained in \cite{holmer3} for the 3D cubic Schrödinger equation.
We consider the focusing $\dot H^{s_c}$-critical biharmonic Schrödinger equation, and prove a global wellposedness and scattering result for the radial data $u_0\in H^2(\mathbb R^N)$ satisfying $ M(u_0)^{\frac{2-s_c}{s_c}}E(u_0)<M(Q)^{\frac{2-s_c}{s_c}}E(Q) $ and $ \|u_{0}\|^{\frac{2-s_c}{s_c}}_{2}\|Δu_{0}\|_{2}<\|Q\|^{\frac{2-s_c}{s_c}}_{2}\|ΔQ\|_{2}, $ where $s_c\in(0,2)$ and $Q$ is the ground state of $Δ^2Q+(2-s_c)Q-|Q|^{p-1}Q=0$.
We consider the wave equation in space dimension $3$, with an energy-supercritical nonlinearity which can be either focusing or defocusing. For any radial solution of the equation, with positive maximal time of existence $T$, we prove that one of the following holds: (i) the norm of the solution in the critical Sobolev space goes to infinity as $t$ goes to $T$, or (ii) $T$ is infinite and the solution scatters to a linear solution forward in time. We use a variant of the channel of energy method, relying on a generalized $L^p$-energy which is almost conserved by the flow of the radial linear w…
We consider the defocusing nonlinear wave equation $u_{tt}-Δu + |u|^p u=0$ with spherically-symmetric initial data in the regime $\frac4{d-2}<p<\frac4{d-3}$ (which is energy-supercritical) and dimensions $3\leq d\leq 6$; we also consider $d\geq 7$, but for a smaller range of $p>\frac4{d-2}$. The principal result is that blowup (or failure to scatter) must be accompanied by blowup of the critical Sobolev norm. An equivalent formulation is that maximal-lifespan solutions with bounded critical Sobolev norm are global and scatter.
This paper deals with existence and multiplicity of positive solutions for a quasilinear problem with Neumann boundary conditions, set in a ball. The problem admits at least one constant non-zero solution and it involves a nonlinearity that can be supercritical in the sense of Sobolev embeddings. The main tools used are variational techniques and the shooting method for ODE's. These results are contained in [6,3].
We consider the focusing $L^2$-supercritical Schrödinger equation in the exterior of a smooth, compact, strictly convex obstacle. We construct a solution behaving asymptotically as a solitary waves on $R^3$, as large time. When the velocity of the solitary wave is high, the existence of such a solution can be proved by a classical fixed point argument. To construct solutions with arbitrary nonzero velocity, we use a compactness argument similar to the one that was introduced by F.Merle in 1990 to construct solution of NLS blowing up at several blow-up point together with a topological argument…
In this paper, we are concerned with solutions to the Cauchy problem for Chern-Simons-Schrödinger equations in the mass supercritical case. First we establish the local well-posedness of solutions in the radial space. Then we consider scattering versus blow-up dichotomy for radial data below the ground state threshold.
We introduce a novel data randomisation for the free wave equation which leads to the same range of Strichartz estimates as for radial data, albeit in a non-radial context. We then use these estimates to establish global well-posedness for a wave maps type nonlinear wave equation for certain supercritical data, provided the data are suitably small and randomised.
We study dynamical properties of blowup solutions to the focusing $L^2$-supercritical nonlinear fractional Schrödinger equation \[ i\partial_t u -(-Δ)^s u = -|u|^αu, \quad u(0) = u_0, \quad \text{on } [0,\infty) \times \mathbb{R}^d, \] where $d \geq 2, \frac{d}{2d-1} \leq s <1$, $\frac{4s}{d}<α<\frac{4s}{d-2s}$ and $u_0 \in \dot{H}^{s_{\text{c}}} \cap \dot{H}^s$ is radial with the critical Sobolev exponent $s_{\text{c}}$. To this end, we establish a compactness lemma related to the equation by means of the profile decomposition for bounded sequences in $\dot{H}^{s_{\text{c}}} \cap \dot{H}^s$. …
We prove the existence of global solutions to the focusing energy-supercritical semilinear wave equation in R^{3+1} for arbitrary outgoing large initial data, after we modify the equation by projecting the nonlinearity on outgoing states.
We consider the semiclassical limit of the Hartree equation with a data causing a focusing at a point. We study the asymptotic behavior of phase function associated with the WKB approximation near the caustic when a nonlinearity is supercritical. In this case, it is known that a phase shift occurs in a neighborhood of focusing time in the case of focusing cubic nonlinear Schrödinger equation. Thanks to the smoothness of the nonlocal nonlinearities, we justify the WKB-type approximation of the solution for a data which is larger than in the previous results and is not necessarily well-prepared.…
We consider the semilinear heat equation in large dimension $d\geq 11$ $$ \partial_t u =Δu+|u| ^{p-1}u, \ \ p=2q+1, \ \ q\in \mathbb N $$ on a smooth bounded domain $Ω\subset \mathbb R^d$ with Dirichlet boundary condition. In the supercritical range $p\geq p(d)>1+\frac{4}{d-2}$ we prove the existence of a countable family $(u_\ell)_{\ell \in \mathbb N}$ of solutions blowing-up at time $T>0$ with type II blow up: $$ \parallel u_{\ell}(t) \parallel_{L^{\infty}} \sim C (T-t)^{-c_\ell} $$ with blow-up speed $c_\ell>\frac{1}{p-1}$. They concentrate the ground state $Q$ being the only radially and d…
We present a numerical study of a derivative nonlinear Schrödinger equation with a general power nonlinearity, $|ψ|^{2σ}ψ_x$. In the $L^2$-supercritical regime, $σ>1$, our simulations indicate that there is a finite time singularity. We obtain a precise description of the local structure of the solution in terms of blowup rate and asymptotic profile, in a form similar to that of the nonlinear Schrödinger equation with supercritical power law nonlinearity.
In this paper, we prove the existence of a countable family of regular spherically symmetric self-similar solutions to focusing energy super-critical semi-linear wave equations \begin{equation*} \partial_{tt}u-Δu=|u|^{p-1}u \qquad \text{in} \,\, \mathbb{R}^{N}, \end{equation*} where $N\geq 3$, $1+\frac{4}{N-2}<p$, and, if $N\geq 4$, $p \leq 1+\frac{4}{N-3}$. This was previously known only in the case $N=3$, for integer $p$ (see Bizoń, Maison and Wasserman \cite{BMW}). We also study the asymptotics of these solutions.
We consider the energy-supercritical nonlinear wave equation $u_{tt}-Δu+|u|^2u=0$ with defocusing cubic nonlinearity in dimension $d=5$ with no radial assumption on the initial data. We prove that a uniform-in-time {\it a priori} bound on the critical norm implies that solutions exist globally in time and scatter at infinity in both time directions. Together with our earlier works in dimensions $d\geq 6$ with general data and dimension $d=5$ with radial data, the present work completes the study of global well-posedness and scattering in the energy-supercritical regime for the cubic nonlineari…
We consider the semilinear heat equation $u_t=Δu+u^p$ on ${\mathbb R}^N$. Assuming that $N\ge 3$ and $p$ is greater than the Sobolev critical exponent $(N+2)/(N-2)$, we examine entire solutions (classical solutions defined for all $t\in {\mathbb R}$) and ancient solutions (classical solutions defined on $(-\infty,T)$ for some $T<\infty$). We prove a new Liouville-type theorem saying that if $p$ is greater than the Lepin exponent $p_L:=1+6/(N-10)$ ($p_L=\infty$ if $N\le 10$), then all positive bounded radial entire solutions are steady states. The theorem is not valid without the assumption of …
We consider spherically symmetric supercritical focusing wave equations outside a ball. Using mixed analytical and numerical methods, we show that the threshold for blowup is given by a codimension-one stable manifold of the unique static solution with exactly one unstable direction. We analyze in detail the convergence to this critical solution for initial data fine-tuned to the threshold.
We are interested in the structure of the positive radial solutions of the supercritical Neumann problem $\varepsilon^2Δu-u+u^p=0$ on a unit ball in $\mathbb{R}^N$ , where $N$ is the spatial dimension and $p>p_S:=(N+2)/(N-2)$, $N\ge 3$. We show that there exists a sequence $\{\varepsilon_n^*\}_{n=1}^{\infty}$ ($\varepsilon_1^*>\varepsilon_2^*>\cdots\rightarrow 0$) such that this problem has infinitely many singular solutions $\{(\varepsilon_n^*,U_n^*)\}_{n=1}^{\infty}\subset\mathbb{R}\times (C^2(0,1)\cap C^1(0,1])$ and that the nonconstant regular solutions consist of infinitely many smooth cu…
We establish existence of positive non-decreasing radial solutions for a nonlocal nonlinear Neumann problem both in the ball and in the annulus. The nonlinearity that we consider is rather general, allowing for supercritical growth (in the sense of Sobolev embedding). The consequent lack of compactness can be overcome, by working in the cone of non-negative and non-decreasing radial functions. Within this cone, we establish some a priori estimates which allow, via a truncation argument, to use variational methods for proving existence of solutions. As a side result, we prove a strong maximum p…
We study radial solutions of the semilinear elliptic equation $Δu+f(u)=0$ under rather general growth conditions on $f$. We construct a radial singular solution and study the intersection number between the singular solution and a regular solution. An application to bifurcation problems of elliptic Dirichlet problems is given. To this end, we derive a certain limit equation from the original equation at infinity, using a generalized similarity transformation. Through a generalized Cole-Hopf transformation, all the limit equations can be reduced into two typical cases, i.e., $Δu+u^p=0$ and $Δu+…
We prove that every solution of the focusing energy-critical wave equation with the compactness property is global. We also give similar results for supercritical wave and Schrödinger equations.
In this paper we deal with the equation \[-Δ_p u+|u|^{p-2}u=|u|^{q-2}u\] for $1<p<2$ and $q>p$, under Neumann boundary conditions in the unit ball of $\mathbb R^N$. We focus on the three positive, radial, and radially non-decreasing solutions, whose existence for $q$ large is proved in [13]. We detect the limit profile as $q\to\infty$ of the higher energy solution and show that, unlike the minimal energy one, it converges to the constant $1$. The proof requires several tools borrowed from the theory of minimization problems and accurate a priori estimates of the solutions, which are of indepen…
In this paper we consider the problem $-Δu=|x|^α F(u)$ in $R^N$, with $α>0$ and $N\ge3$. Under some assumptions on $F$ we deduce the existence of nonradial solutions which bifurcate from the radial one when $α$ is an even integer.
We study the focusing nonlinear Schrödinger equation in the $L^2$-supercritical regime with finite energy and finite variance initial data. We investigate solutions above the energy (or mass-energy) threshold. In our first result, we extend the known scattering versus blow-up dichotomy above that threshold for finite variance solutions in the energy-subcritical and energy-critical regimes, obtaining scattering and blow-up criteria for solutions with arbitrarily large mass and energy. As a consequence, we characterize the behavior of the ground state initial data modulated by a quadratic phase.…
We consider the focusing nonlinear Schrödinger equations $i\partial_t u+Δu +u|u|^{p-1}=0$ in dimension $1\leq N\leq 5$ and for slightly $L^2$ supercritical nonlinearities $p_c<p<(1+\e)p_c$ with $p_c=1+\frac{4}{N}$ and $0<\e\ll 1$. We prove the existence and stability in the energy space $H^1$ of a self similar finite time blow up dynamics and provide a qualitative description of the singularity formation near the blow up time
We investigate the existence of solutions to the fractional nonlinear Schrödinger equation $(-Δ)^s u = f(u)$ with prescribed $L^2$-norm $\int_{\mathbb{R}^N} |u|^2 \, dx =m$ in the Sobolev space $H^s(\mathbb{R}^N)$. Under fairly general assumptions on the nonlinearity $f$, we prove the existence of a ground state solution and a multiplicity result in the radially symmetric case.
The nonlinear wave equation $u_{tt}-Δu +|u_t|^{p-1}u_t=0$ is shown to be globally well-posed in the Sobolev spaces of radially symmetric functions $H^k_{\rm rad}({\bf R}^3)\times H^{k-1}_{\rm rad}({\bf R}^3)$ for all $p\geq 3$ and $k\geq 3$. Moreover, global $C^\infty $ solutions are obtained when the initial data are $C_0^\infty$ and exponent $p$ is an odd integer. The radial symmetry allows a reduction to the one-dimensional case where an important observation of A. Haraux (2009) can be applied, i.e., dissipative nonlinear wave equations contract initial data in $W^{k,q}({\bf R})\times W^{k-…
For $p>2$, we consider the quasilinear equation $-Δ_p u+|u|^{p-2}u=g(u)$ in the unit ball $B$ of $\mathbb R^N$, with homogeneous Neumann boundary conditions. The assumptions on $g$ are very mild and allow the nonlinearity to be possibly supercritical in the sense of Sobolev embeddings. We prove the existence of a nonconstant, positive, radially nondecreasing solution via variational methods. In the case $g(u)=|u|^{q-2}u$, we detect the asymptotic behavior of these solutions as $q\to\infty$.
In this paper we prove that the cubic wave equation is globally well - posed and scattering for radial initial data lying in a slightly supercritical Sobolev space, and a weighted Sobolev space.
For the 3D focusing cubic nonlinear Schrodinger equation, Scattering of $H^1$ solutions inside the (scale invariant) potential well was established by Holmer and Roudenko~\cite{HR2} (radial case) and Duyckaerts, Holmer and Roudenko~\cite{DHR} (general case). In this paper, we extend this result to arbitrary space dimensions and focusing, mass-supercritical and energy-subcritical power nonlinearities, by adapting the method of~\cite{DHR}.
We prove the existence of global solutions to the energy-supercritical wave equation in R^{3+1} u_{tt}-Δu + |u|^N u = 0, u(0) = u_0, u_t(0) = u_1, 4<N<\infty, for a large class of radially symmetric finite-energy initial data. Functions in this class are characterized as being outgoing under the linear flow --- for a specific meaning of "outgoing" defined below. In particular, we construct global solutions for initial data with large (even infinite) critical Sobolev, Besov, Lebesgue, and Lorentz norms and several other large critical norms.
We consider the focusing $L^2$-supercritical fractional nonlinear Schrödinger equation \[ i\partial_t u - (-Δ)^s u = -|u|^αu, \quad (t,x) \in \mathbb{R}^+ \times \mathbb{R}^d, \] where $d\geq 2, \frac{d}{2d-1} \leq s <1$ and $\frac{4s}{d}<α<\frac{4s}{d-2s}$. By means of the localized virial estimate, we prove that the ground state standing wave is strongly unstable by blow-up. This result is a complement to a recent result of Peng-Shi [J. Math. Phys. 59 (2018), 011508] where the stability and instability of standing waves were studied in the $L^2$-subcritical and $L^2$-critical cases.
We consider the focusing mass supercritical nonlinear Schrödinger equation with rotation \begin{equation*} iu_{t}=-\frac{1}{2}Δu+\frac{1}{2}V(x)u-|u|^{p-1}u+L_Ωu,\quad (x,t)\in \mathbb{R}^{N}\times\mathbb{R}, \end{equation*} where $N=2$ or $3$ and $V(x)$ is an anisotropic harmonic potential. Here $L_Ω$ is the quantum mechanical angular momentum operator. We establish conditions for global existence and blow-up in the energy space. Moreover, we prove strong instability of standing waves under certain conditions on the rotation and the frequency of the wave. Finally, we construct orbitally stabl…
