Let $A$ be a subset of primes up to $x$. If we assume $A$ is well-distributed (in the Siegel-Walfisz sense) in any arithmetic progressions to moduli $q\leqslant(\log x)^c$ for any $c>0$, then the sumset $A+A$ has density 1/2 in the natural numbers as $x$ tends to infinity, which also yields almost all even positive integers could be represented as the sums of two primes in $A$ as $x$ tends to infinity. This result, improving the previous results in such special case, could be compared with the classical estimation for the exceptional set of binary Goldbach problem.
Suppose that P is an infinite set of primes such that P = A + B + C, where A,B,C are sets with at least two elements. We show that if P(x) > c x/log^d x (where P(x) = the number of elements of P that are <= x), and if A,B,C is a "regular" triple of sets, then either |A+B| <= d, or |B+C| <= d, or |A+C| <= d.
Let $A$ be a set in an abelian group $G$. For integers $h,r \geq 1$ the generalized $h$-fold sumset, denoted by $h^{(r)}A$, is the set of sums of $h$ elements of $A$, where each element appears in the sum at most $r$ times. If $G=\mathbb{Z}$ lower bounds for $|h^{(r)}A|$ are known, as well as the structure of the sets of integers for which $|h^{(r)}A|$ is minimal. In this paper we generalize this result by giving a lower bound for $|h^{(r)}A|$ when $G=\mathbb{Z}/p\mathbb{Z}$ for a prime $p$, and show new proofs for the direct and inverse problems in $\mathbb{Z}$.
We investigate sumset decompositions of quite general sets with restricted prime factors. We manage to handle certain sets, such as the smooth numbers, even though they have little sieve amenability, and conclude that these sets cannot be written as a ternary sumset. This proves a conjecture by Sárközy. We also clean up and sharpen existing results on sumset decompositions of the prime numbers.
We obtain an upper bound for the number of pairs $ (a,b) \in {A\times B} $ such that $ a+b $ is a prime number, where $ A, B \subseteq \{1,...,N \}$ with $|A||B| \, \gg \frac{N^2}{(\log {N})^2}$, $\, N \geq 1$ an integer. This improves on a bound given by Balog, Rivat and Sárközy.
We obtain new results on additive properties of the set $$ I^{-1}= \{x^{-1}: \quad x\in I\} $$ where $I$ is an arbitrary interval in the field of residue classes modulo a large prime $p$. We combine our results with multilinear exponential sum estimates and obtain new results on incomplete multilinear Kloosterman sums.
A subset $A$ of a group $G$ is called $(k, l)$-{\it sumset}, if $A= kB-lB$ for some $B\subseteq G$, where $kB-lB={x_1+...+x_k-x_{k+1}-...-x_{k+l} : x_1,..., x_{k+l}\in B}.$ Upper and lower bounds for the number $(k, l)$-sumsets in groups of prime order are provided.
Let $A$ be a finite set of integers. We show that if $k$ is a prime power or a product of two distinct primes then $$|A+k\cdot A|\geq(k+1)|A|-\lceil k(k+2)/4\rceil$$ provided $|A|\geq (k-1)^{2}k!$, where $A+k\cdot A=\{a+kb:\ a,b\in A\}$. We also establish the inequality $|A+4\cdot A|\geq 5|A|-6 $ for $|A|\geq 5$.
In this paper, we develop Terence Tao's harmonic analysis method and apply it to restricted sumsets. The well known Cauchy-Davenport theorem asserts that if $A$ and $B$ are nonempty subsets of $Z/pZ$ with $p$ a prime, then $|A+B|\ge min{p,|A|+|B|-1}$, where $A+B={a+b: a\in A, b\in B}$. In 2005, Terence Tao gave a harmonic analysis proof of the Cauchy-Davenport theorem, by applying a new form of the uncertainty principle on Fourier transform. We modify Tao's method so that it can be used to prove the following extension of the Erdos-Heilbronn conjecture: If $A,B,S$ are nonempty subsets of $Z/pZ…
Suppose that $A$, $B$ and $S$ are non-empty subsets of a finite abelian group $G$. Then the generalized restricted sumset $$ A\stackrel{S}+B:=\{a+b:\,a\in A,\ b\in B,\ a-b\not\in S\} $$ contains at least $$ \min\{|A|+|B|-3|S|,p(G)\} $$ elements, where $p(G)$ is the least prime factor of $|G|$. Further, we also have $$ |A\stackrel{S}+B|\geq \min\{|A|+|B|-|S|-2,p(G)\}, $$ provided that both $|A|$ and $|B|$ are large with respect to $|S|$.
Suppose that $A,B$ are two non-empty subsets of the finite nilpotent group $G$. If $A\not=B$, then the cardinality of the restricted sumset $$A\dotplus B={a+b: a\in A, b\in B, a\neq b} $$ is at least $$\min{p(G),|A|+|B|-2},$$ where $p(G)$ denotes the least prime factor of $|G|$.
Fix $α\in (0,1/3)$. We show that, from a topological point of view, almost all sets $A\subseteq \mathbb{N}$ have the property that, if $A^\prime=A$ for all but $o(n^α)$ elements, then $A^\prime$ is not a nontrivial sumset $B+C$. In particular, almost all $A$ are totally irreducible. In addition, we prove that the measure analogue holds with $α=1$.
We study the extent to which sets A in Z/NZ, N prime, resemble sets of integers from the additive point of view (``up to Freiman isomorphism''). We give a direct proof of a result of Freiman, namely that if |A + A| < K|A| and |A| < c(K)N then A is Freiman isomorphic to a set of integers. Because we avoid appealing to Freiman's structure theorem, we get a reasonable bound: we can take c(K) > exp(-cK^2 log K). As a byproduct of our argument we obtain a sharpening of the second author's result on sets with small sumset in torsion groups. For example if A is a subset of F_2^n, and if |A + A| < K|A…

Suppose that G is an abelian group and A is a finite subset of G containing no three-term arithmetic progressions. We show that |A+A| >> |A|(log |A|)^{1/3-ε} for all ε>0.
Let $\mathbb{F}_q$ be a finite field of order $q$, where $q$ is large odd prime power. In this paper, we improve some recent results on the additive energy of the distance set, and on sumsets of the distance set due to Shparlinski (2016). More precisely, we prove that for $\mathcal{E}\subseteq \mathbb{F}_q^d$, if $d=2$ and $q^{1+\frac{1}{4k-1}}=o(|\mathcal{E}|)$ then we have $|kΔ_{\mathbb{F}_q}(\mathcal{E})|=(1-o(1))q$; if $d\ge 3$ and $q^{\frac{d}{2}+\frac{1}{2k}}=o(|\mathcal{E}|)$ then we have $|kΔ_{\mathbb{F}_q}(\mathcal{E})|=(1-o(1))q,$ where $kΔ_{\mathbb{F}_q}(\mathcal{E}):=Δ_{\mathbb{F}_…
Our main result states that when A, B, C are subsets of Z/NZ of respective densities α,β,γ, the sumset A + B + C contains an arithmetic progression of length at least e^{c(\log N)^c} for densities α> (\log N)^{-2 + ε} and β,γ> e^{-c(\log N)^c}, where c depends on ε. Previous results of this type required one set to have density at least (\log N)^{-1 + o(1)}. Our argument relies on the method of Croot, Laba and Sisask to establish a similar estimate for the sumset A + B and on the recent advances on Roth's theorem by Sanders. We also obtain new estimates for the analogous problem in the primes …
We prove that the sumset {p^2+b^2+2^n: p is prime and b,n\in N} has positive lower density. We also construct a residue class with odd modulo, which contains no integer of the form p^2+b^2+2^n. And similar results are established for the sumset {b_1^2+b_2^2+2^{n^2}: b_1,b_2,n\in N}.
In part I of this paper we studied additive decomposability of the set $\F_y$ of th $y$-smooth numbers and the multiplicative decomposability of the shifted set $\g_y=\F_y+\{1\}$. In this paper, focusing on the case of 'large' functions $y$, we continue the study of these problems. Further, we also investigate a problem related to the m-decomposability of $k$-term sumsets, for arbitrary $k$.
Let P be the set of all primes and P_2=P\cup{p_1p_2: p_1,p_2\in P}$. We prove that the sumset 2^P+P_2={2^p+q: p\in P, q\in P_2} has a positive lower density.
We study the equidistribution of multiplicatively defined sets, such as the squarefree integers, quadratic non-residues or primitive roots, in sets which are described in an additive way, such as sumsets or Hilbert cubes. In particular, we show that if one fixes any proportion less than $40\%$ of the digits of all numbers of a given binary bit length, then the remaining set still has the asymptotically expected number of squarefree integers. Next, we investigate the distribution of primitive roots modulo a large prime $p$, establishing a new upper bound on the largest dimension of a Hilbert cu…
Zhang has shown there are infinitely many intervals of bounded length containing two primes. It appears that the current techniques cannot prove that there are infinitely many intervals of bounded length containing three primes, even if strong conjectures such as the Elliott-Halberstam conjecture are assumed. We show that there are infinitely many intervals of length at most $10^8$ which contain two primes and a number with at most 31 prime factors.
We prove a modification as well as an improvement of a result of K. Ford, D. R. Heath-Brown and S. Konyagin concerning prime avoidance of square-free numbers and perfect powers of prime numbers.
Let $p_n$ is the $n$-th prime. With help of the Cramér-like model, we prove that the set of intervals of the form $(2p_n,\enskip2p_{n+1})$ containing at list 3 primes has a positive density with respect to the set of all intervals of such form.
We consider a generalization of Euclid's proof of the infinitude of primes and show that it leads to variants of the Euclid-Mullin sequence that provably contain every prime number.
For any positive integer $k$, we show that infinitely often, perfect $k$-th powers appear inside very long gaps between consecutive prime numbers, that is, gaps of size $$ c_k \frac{\log p \log_2 p \log_4 p}{(\log_3 p)^2}, $$ where $p$ is the smaller of the two primes.
Let $k\geq 2$ be a fixed natural number. We establish the existence of infinitely many pairs of consecutive primes $p_n$, $p_{n+1}$ satisfying $$ p_{n+1}-p_n\geq c\:\frac{\log p_n\: \log_2 p_n\: \log_4 p_n}{\log_3 p_n}\:,$$ with $c$ being a fixed positive constant, for which the interval $(p_n, p_{n+1})$ contains the $k$-th power of a prime number.
In this paper we prove new cases of the asymptotic Fermat equation with coefficients. This is done by solving remarkable $S$-units equations and applying a method of Frey-Mazur.
Let p be an odd prime, such that p_n<p/2<p_{n+1}, where p_n is the n-th prime. We study the following question: with what probability does there exist a prime in the interval (p, 2p_{n+1})? After the strong definition of the probability with help of the Ramanujan primes ([11], [12])and the introducing pseudo-Ramanujan primes, we show, that if such probability P exists, then P>=0.5. We also study a symmetrical case of the left intervals, which connected with sequence A080359 at OEIS.
We fix a non-zero integer $a$ and consider arithmetic progressions $a \bmod q$, with $q$ varying over a given range. We show that for certain specific values of $a$, the arithmetic progressions $a \bmod q$ contain, on average, significantly fewer primes than expected.
We prove that for every nonnegative integer $m$ there exists an $\varepsilon>0$ such that if $λ\in (0,\varepsilon]$ and $x$ is sufficiently large in terms of $m$, then the number of positive integers $n\leq x$ for which the interval $[n,n+λ\log n]$ contains exactly $m$ primes is at least a constant times $x/\log x.$ This improves a result of T. Freiberg, when $λ$ is small.
We prove that if $x$ is large enough, namely $x\ge x_0$, then there exists a prime between $x(1- Δ^{-1})$ and $x$, where $Δ$ is an effective constant computed in terms of $x_0$. This improves some previous results of Ramaré and Saouter and is used to verify the Ternary Goldbach Conjecture for the integers up to $7.86\cdot 10^{27}$.
Goldston, Pintz and Yıldırım have shown that if the primes have `level of distribution' $θ$ for some $θ>1/2$ then there exists a constant $C(θ)$, such that there are infinitely many integers $n$ for which the interval $[n,n+C(θ)]$ contains two primes. We show under the same assumption that for any integer $k\ge 1$ there exists constants $D(θ,k)$ and $r(θ,k)$, such that there are infinitely many integers $n$ for which the interval $[n,n+D(θ,k)]$ contains two primes and $k$ almost-primes, with all of the almost-primes having at most $r(θ,k)$ prime factors. If $θ$ can be taken as large as $1-ε$, …
We study values of k for which the interval (kn,(k+1)n) contains a prime for every n>1. We prove that the list of such integers k includes k=1,2,3,5,9,14, and no others, at least for k<=50,000,000. For every known k of this list, we give a good upper estimate of the smallest N_k(m), such that, if n>=N_k(m), then the interval (kn,(k+1)n) contains at least m primes.
It has been conjectured by Sarkozy that with finitely many exceptions, the set of quadratic residues modulo a prime $p$ cannot be represented as a sumset $\{a+b\colon a\in A, b\in B\}$ with non-singleton sets $A,B\subset F_p$. The case $A=B$ of this conjecture has been recently established by Shkredov. The analogous problem for differences remains open: is it true that for all sufficiently large primes $p$, the set of quadratic residues modulo $p$ is not of the form $\{a'-a"\colon a',a"\in A,\,a'\ne a"\}$ with $A\subset F_p$? We attack here a presumably more tractable variant of this problem, …
Let $A\subset\left\{ 1,\dots,N\right\} $ be a set of prime numbers containing no non-trivial arithmetic progressions. Suppose that $A$ has relative density $α=|A|/π(N)$, where $π(N)$ denotes the number of primes in the set $\left\{ 1,\dots,N\right\} $. By modifying Helfgott and De Roton's work, we improve their bound and show that $$α\ll\frac{\left(\log\log\log N\right)^{6}}{\log\log N}.$$
Let $q\ge 3$ be a non-exceptional modulus $q\ge3$, and let $a$ be a positive integer coprime with $q$. For any $ε>0$, there exists $α>0$ (computable), such that for all $x\ge α(\log q)^2$, the interval $\left[ e^x,e^{x+ε}\right]$ contains a prime $p$ in the arithmetic progression $a \bmod q$. This gives the bound for the least prime in this arithmetic progression: $P(a,q) \le e^{α(\log q)^2}$. For instance for all $q\ge 10^{30}$, $P(a,q) \le e^{4.401(\log q)^2}$. Finally, we apply this result to establish that every integer larger than $e^{71\,000}$ is a sum of seven cubes.
We will prove that for every $m\geq 0$ there exists an $\varepsilon=\varepsilon(m)>0$ such that if $0<λ<\varepsilon$ and $x$ is sufficiently large in terms of $m$ and $λ$, then $$|\lbrace n\leq x: |[n,n+λ\log n]\cap \mathbb{P}|=m\rbrace|\gg_{m,λ} x.$$ The value of $\varepsilon(m)$ and the implicit constant on $λ$ and $m$ may be made explicit. This is an improvement of an author's previous result. Moreover, we will show that a careful investigation of the proof, apart from some slight changes, can lead to analogous estimates when considering the parameters $m$ and $λ$ to vary as functions of $x…
Fix $a \in \mathbb{Z}$, $a\notin \{0,\pm 1\}$. A simple argument shows that for each $ε> 0$, and almost all (asymptotically 100% of) primes $p$, the multiplicative order of $a$ modulo $p$ exceeds $p^{\frac12-ε}$. It is an open problem to show the same result with $\frac12$ replaced by any larger constant. We show that if $a,b$ are multiplicatively independent, then for almost all primes $p$, one of $a,b,ab, a^2b, ab^2$ has order exceeding $p^{\frac{1}{2}+\frac{1}{30}}$. The same method allows one to produce, for each $ε> 0$, explicit finite sets $\mathcal{A}$ with the property that for almost …
