An $r$-identifying code in a graph $G = (V,E)$ is a subset $C \subseteq V$ such that for each $u \in V$ the intersection of $C$ and the ball of radius $r$ centered at $u$ is nonempty and unique. Previously, $r$-identifying codes have been studied in various grids. In particular, it has been shown that there exists a 2-identifying code in the square grid with density $5/29 \approx 0.172$ and that there are no 2-identifying codes with density smaller than $3/20 = 0.15$. Recently, the lower bound has been improved to $6/37 \approx 0.162$ by Martin and Stanton (2010). In this paper, we further improve the lower bound by showing that there are no 2-identifying codes in the square grid with density smaller than $6/35 \approx 0.171$.
This paper intends to solve the Transversal achievement on an n times n grid problem proposed by Dr. Martin Erickson. We approach the problem using mathematical induction and case analysis and prove the hypothesis that for all n greater than 1, the game is a draw.
The independence complex of a graph G is a simplicial complex whose simplices are the independent sets in G. In the last couple of decades, the independence complexes of square grids (with various boundary conditions) have gained much attention because of their connections with the hard square model from statistical physics. In this article, we prove that if G is an $m\times n$ grid with open or cylindrical boundary condition then its independence complex is homotopy equivalent to a wedge of spheres. A part of this result settles a conjecture of Iriye.
We show that anagram-free vertex colouring a $2\times n$ square grid requires a number of colours that increases with $n$. This answers an open question in Wilson's thesis and shows that even graphs of pathwidth $2$ do not have anagram-free colourings with a bounded number of colours.
On the 12-representability of induced subgraphs of a grid graph
Let $G=(V(G),E(G))$ be a simple graph. A set $S \subseteq V(G)$ is a strong edge geodetic set if there exists an assignment of exactly one shortest path between each pair of vertices from $S$, such that these shortest paths cover all the edges $E(G)$. The cardinality of a smallest strong edge geodetic set is the strong edge geodetic number $\text{sge}(G)$ of $G$. In this paper, the strong edge geodetic problem is studied on the Cartesian product of two paths. The exact value of the strong edge geodetic number is computed for $P_n \, \square \, P_2$, $P_n \, \square \, P_3$ and $P_n \, \square …
A star edge-coloring of a graph $G$ is a proper edge-coloring without bichromatic paths or cycles of length four. The smallest integer $k$ such that $G$ admits a star edge-coloring with $k$ colors is the star chromatic index of $G$. In the seminal paper on the topic, Dvořák, Mohar, and Šámal asked if the star chromatic index of complete graphs is linear in the number of vertices and gave an almost linear upper bound. Their question remains open, and consequently, to better understand the behavior of the star chromatic index, this parameter has been studied for a number of other classes of grap…
Assume that a graph $G$ models a detection system for a facility with a possible ``intruder," or a multiprocessor network with a possible malfunctioning processor. We consider the problem of placing detectors at a subset of vertices in $G$ to determine the location of an intruder if there is any. Many types of detection systems have been defined for different sensor capabilities; in particular, we focus on Identifying Codes, where each detector can determine whether there is an intruder within its closed neighborhood. In this research we explore a fault-tolerant variant of identifying codes ap…
We use a dynamic programming algorithm to establish a lower bound on the domination number of complete grid graphs of the form $C_n\square P_m$, that is, the Cartesian product of a cycle $C_n$ and a path $P_m$, for $m$ and $n$ sufficiently large.
Consider a $2\times n$ rectangular grid composed of $1\times 1$ squares. Cutting only along the edges between squares, how many ways are there to divide the board into $k$ pieces? Building off the work of Durham and Richmond, who found the closed-form solutions for the number of divisions into 2 and 3 pieces, we prove a recursive relationship that counts the number of divisions of the board into $k$ pieces. Using this recursion, we obtain closed-form solutions for the number of divisions for $k=4$ and $k=5$ using fitting techniques on data generated from the recursion. Furthermore, we show tha…
We determine the homotopy types of the independence complexes of the $(n \times 6)$-square grid graphs. In fact, we show that these complexes are homotopy equivalent to wedges of spheres.
Among subgraphs with a fixed number of vertices of the regular square lattice, we prove inequalities that essentially say that those with smaller boundaries have larger numbers of spanning trees and vice-versa. As an application, we relate two commonly used measurements of the compactness of district maps.
