Real-time stress evolution in a graphite-based lithium-ion battery negative-electrode during electrolyte wetting and electrochemical cycling is measured through wafer-curvature method. Upon electrolyte addition, the composite electrode rapidly develops compressive stress of the order of 1-2 MPa due to binder swelling; upon continued exposure, the stress continues to evolve towards an apparent plateau. During electrochemical intercalation at a slow rate, the compressive stress increases with the electrode's state-of-charge, reaching a maximum value of 10 - 12 MPa. There appears to be an approximate correlation between the rate of stress rise and the staging behavior of the lithiated graphite. De-intercalation at a slow rate results in a similar linear decrease in electrode stress. Tensile stress of a few MPa develops at the end of deintercalation in the first few cycles, after which the electrode remains under compressive stress only. Although higher peak stresses are seen at high C-rates, the dependence appears to be relatively weak (up to 5C). These measurements reveal, for the first time, the nature of stress evolution in practical lithium-ion-battery electrodes and provide useful data to quantify the driving force for mechanical damage that accrues in composite electrodes upon repeated cycling. While the reported results can serve as reference for calibrating theoretical and computational models to predict electrode stress and damage evolution, the methodology demonstrated can be used to measure stresses and characterize fatigue damage in any composite lithium-ion-battery electrode as well as optimize its microstructure to mitigate stress-related damage mechanisms.
LixMn2O4 is an important cathode material for the Li ion battery. During battery charging, the stoichiometry x varies continuously from 1 to zero and on discharging it varies from zero to one. The cubic lattice constant a of LixMn2O4 depends on the value of x and the variation of a with x has important consequences for the battery performance. In this paper, we use a Madelung-Buckingham model to study this variation and compare the results with experimental data on LixMn2O4

By carefully balancing the cell composition and suppressing the initial irreversible capacity of the anode, we demonstrate an optimal battery performance in terms of spec…
We have studied low-temperature magnetic properties as well as high-temperature lithium ion diffusion in the battery cathode materials LixNi1/3Co1/3Mn1/3O2 by the use of muon spin rotation/relaxation. Our data reveal that the samples enter into a 2D spin-glass state below TSG=12 K. We further show that lithium diffusion channels become active for T>Tdiff=125 K where the Li-ion hopping-rate [nu(T)] starts to increase exponentially. Further, nu(T) is found to fit very well to an Arrhenius type equation and the activation energy for the diffusion process is extracted as Ea=100 meV.
Distributions of potential and lithium content inside lithium ion batteries highly affects their performance and durability. An increased heterogeneity of the lithium distribution is expected in thick electrodes with high energy densities or cycling at high currents. To optimize electrodes and cells designs, it is crucial to probe lithium concentration gradients across the depth of the electrode, but also to predict their occurrence and magnitude as a function of materials properties. Here, we follow the lithium distribution across a $80~μm$ thick porous graphite electrode using a $1~μm$ focus…
In this paper, Al-Cu-Fe quasicrystal alloy was used as anode material of lithium-ion batteries. The first specific discharge capacity of quasicrystal was 204mAh/g. Cyclic voltammetry showed that oxidation peak of Al-Cu-Fe quasicrystal was at about 1.4V. The reduction peak was at 0.3V. Al-Cu-Fe quasicrystal have higher Li-ion diffusion impedance and Warburg in the first cycle. X-ray diffraction analysis demonstrate that Li atom enter into quasicrystal structure can not fully leave quasicrytal during first charge/discharge cycle which induce the irreversible capacity.

Accurate identification of chemical phases associated with the electrode and solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) is critical for understanding and controlling interfacial degradation mechanisms in lithium containing battery systems. To study these critical battery materials and interfaces X ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) is a widely used technique that provides quantitative chemical insights. However, due to the fact that a majority of chemical phases relevant to battery interfaces are poor electronic conductors, phase identification that relies primarily on absolute XPS core level bindin…
We report the synthesis of a graphene-sulfur composite material by wrapping polyethyleneglycol (PEG) coated submicron sulfur particles with mildly oxidized graphene oxide sheets decorated by carbon black nanoparticles. The PEG and graphene coating layers are important to accommodating volume expansion of the coated sulfur particles during discharge, trapping soluble polysulfide intermediates and rendering the sulfur particles electrically conducting. The resulting graphene-sulfur composite showed high and stable specific capacities up to ~600mAh/g over more than 100 cycles, representing a prom…

Electrostatic energy (Madelung energy) is a major constituent of the cohesive energy of ionic crystals. Several physicochemical properties of these materials depend on the response of their electrostatic energy to a variety of applied thermal, electrical and mechanical stresses. In the present study, a method has been developed based on Ewalds technique, to compute the electrostatic energy arising from ion-ion interactions in ionic crystals like LixMn2O4 with variable stoichiometries and mixed valencies. An interesting application of this method in computing the voltages of lithium ion batteri…
Lithium (Li) metal anodes are essential for developing next-generation high-energy-density batteries. However, Li dendrite/whisker formation caused short-circuiting issue and short cycle life have prevented lithium metal from being viably used in rechargeable batteries. Numerous works have been done to study how to regulate the Li growth in electrochemical cycling by using external stacking forces. While it is widely agreed that stack pressure positively affects the lithium plating/stripping process, the optimized pressure range provided by different works varies greatly because of the differe…
Metal fluoride and oxides can store multiple lithium-ions through conversion chemistry to enable high energy-density lithium-ion batteries. However, their practical applications have been hindered by an unusually large voltage hysteresis between charge and discharge voltage-profiles and the consequent low energy efficiency (< 80%). The physical origins of such hysteresis are rarely studied and poorly understood. Here we employ in situ X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), density-functional-theory (DFT) calculations, and galvanostatic intermittent titrati…

Existence of van der Waals gaps renders two-dimensional (2D) materials ideal passages of lithium for being used as anode materials. However, the requirement of good conductivity significantly limits the choice of 2D candidates. So far only graphite is satisfying due to its relatively high conductivity. Recently, a new polymorph of layered germanium selenide (Gamma-GeSe) was proven to be semimetal in its bulk phase with a higher conductivity than graphite while its monolayer behaves semiconducting. In this work, by using first-principles calculations, we examined the possibility of using this n…
Lithium-ion batteries can last many years but sometimes exhibit rapid, nonlinear degradation that severely limits battery lifetime. In this work, we review prior work on "knees" in lithium-ion battery aging trajectories. We first review definitions for knees and three classes of "internal state trajectories" (termed snowball, hidden, and threshold trajectories) that can cause a knee. We then discuss six knee "pathways", including lithium plating, electrode saturation, resistance growth, electrolyte and additive depletion, percolation-limited connectivity, and mechanical deformation -- some of …
Lithium titanium oxide Li$_4$Ti$_5$O$_{12}$ (LTO) is an intriguing anode material promising particularly long lived batteries, due to its remarkable phase stability during (dis)charging of the cell. However, its usage is limited by its low intrinsic electronic conductivity. Introducing oxygen vacancies can be one method to overcome this drawback, possibly by altering the charge carrier transport mechanism. We use Hubbard corrected density-functional theory (DFT+U) to show that polaronic states in combination with a possible hopping mechanism can play a crucial role in the experimentally observ…
Here, we correlate the nanoscale morphology and chemical composition of solid electrolyte interphases (SEI) with the electrochemical property of graphite-based composite electrodes. Using electrochemical strain microscopy (ESM) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), changes of chemical composition and morphology (Li and F distribution) in SEI layers on the electrodes as a function of solid electrolyte contents are analyzed. As a result, we find a strong correlation between morphological variations on the electrode, Li and F distribution in SEI layer, and Coulomb efficiency. This correlati…
Solid state battery technology has recently garnered considerable interest from companies including Toyota, BMW, Dyson, and others. Key to advancing lithium-ion battery technology, and in particular fast charging capabilities, is our ability to follow and understand the dynamic processes occurring in operating materials under realistic conditions, in real time, and on the nano- to meso-scale. Currently, operando imaging of lithium-ion dynamics requires sophisticated synchrotron X-ray or electron microscopy techniques, which do not lend themselves to high-throughput material screening. This limits rapid and rational materials improvements. Here we introduce a simple lab-based, optical interferometric scattering microscope t…

Composite cathode coatings made of a high energy density layered oxide (Li1.2Ni0.15Mn0.55Co0.1O2, theoretical capacity ~377 mAh/g), polyvinylidene fluoride (PVdF) binder, and electron-conduction additives, were bonded to an elastic substrate. An electrochemical cell, built by pairing the cathode with a capacity-matched graphite anode, was electrochemically cycled and the real-time average stress evolution in the cathode coating was measured using a substrate-curvature technique. Features in the stress evolution profile showed correlations with phase changes in the oxide, thus yielding data com…
The prospects of phosphorene as an anode material for high performance Li-ion battery was systematically investigated from the first principle calculations and experimental measurements. The diffusion energy barriers of a Li atom moving along various orientations on phosphorene layer were calculated from the Li adsorption energy landscape. It was found that the diffusion mobility of a Li atom along the zigzag direction in the valley of phosphorene could be about 7 to 11 orders of magnitude faster than that along the other directions, indicating its ultrafast and anisotropic diffusivity. The li…
A thick electrode with high areal capacity has been developed as a strategy for high-energy-density lithium-ion batteries, but thick electrodes have difficulties in manufacturing and limitations in ion transport. In this work, we show the use of Marcus-Hush-Chidsey (MHC) kinetics to accurately predict the Tafel curve data from the work of Boyle et al. We discuss the differe…
A safe lithium-sulfur (Li-S) battery employs a composite polymer electrolyte based on a poly(ethylene glycol) dimethyl ether (PEGDME) solid at room temperature. The electrolyte membrane enables a stable and reversible Li-S electrochemical process already at 50°C, with low resistance at the electrode/electrolyte interphase and fast Li+ transport. The relatively low molecular weight of the PEGDME and the optimal membrane composition in terms of salts and ceramic allow a liquid-like Li-S conversion reaction by heating at moderately high temperature, still holding the solid-like polymer state of t…
The decomposition of ethylene carbonate (EC) during the initial growth of solid-electrolyte interphase (SEI) films at the solvent-graphitic anode interface is critical to lithium ion battery operations. Ab initio molecular dynamics simulations of explicit liquid EC/graphite interfaces are conducted to study these electrochemical reactions. We show that carbon edge terminations are crucial at this stage, and that achievable experimental conditions can lead to surprisingly fast EC breakdown mechanisms, yielding decomposition products seen in experiments but not previously predicted.
Electrochemical impedance spectra for battery electrodes are usually interpreted using models that assume isotropic active particles, having uniform current density and symmetric diffusivities. While this can be reasonable for amorphous or polycrystalline materials with randomly oriented grains, modern electrode materials increasingly consist of highly anisotropic, single-crystalline, nanoparticles, with different impedance characteristics. In this paper, analytical expressions are derived for the impedance of anisotropic particles with tensorial diffusivities and orientation-dependent surface…

Fracture of lithium-ion battery electrodes is found to contribute to capacity fade and reduce the lifespan of a battery. Traditional fracture models for batteries are restricted to consideration of a single, idealised particle; here, advanced X-ray computed tomography (CT) imaging, an electro-chemo-mechanical model and a phase field fracture framework are combined to predict the void-driven fracture in the electrode particles of a realistic battery electrode microstructure. The electrode is shown to exhibit a highly heterogeneous electrochemical and fracture response that depends on the partic…

A major challenge in the development of new battery materials is understanding their fundamental mechanisms of operation and degradation. Their microscopically inhomogeneous nature calls for characterization tools that provide operando and localized information from individual grains and particles. Here we describe an approach that images the nanoscale distribution of ions during electrochemical charging of a battery in a transmission electron microscope liquid flow cell. We use valence energy-loss spectroscopy to track both solvated and intercalated ions, with electronic structure fingerprint…
The structure of lithium ion battery components, such as electrodes and separators, are commonly characterised in terms of their porosity and tortuosity. The ratio of these values gives the effective transport of lithium ions in the electrolyte-filled pore spaces, which can be used to determine the ionic resistivity and corresponding voltage losses. Here, we show that these microstructural characteristics are not sufficient. Analysis of tomographic data of commercial separators reveals that different polyolefin separators have similar porosity and through-plane tortuosity, which, in the homoge…
The short diffusion lengths in insertion battery nanoparticles render the capacitive behavior of bounded diffusion, which is rarely observable with conventional larger particles, now accessible to impedance measurements. Coupled with improved geometrical characterization, this presents an opportunity to measure solid diffusion more accurately than the traditional approach of fitting Warburg circuit elements, by properly taking into account the particle geometry and size distribution. We revisit bounded diffusion impedance models and incorporate them into an overall impedance model for differen…
Dendrite growth is a long-standing challenge that has limited the applications of rechargeable lithium metal electrodes. Adding porosity to battery electrodes is believed to be universally useful for adding space to accommodate volumetric expansion, electrolyte access to all active materials, helping to mitigate poor C-rate performance for thicker electrodes and for allowing infilling with other materials. Ordered porous electrode, such as inverse opals that have macroporosity, have been a model system: binder and conductive additive free, interconnected electrically, defined porosity and pore size with thickness, good electrolyte wettability and surprisingly good electrode performance in half cells and Li-batte…

Battery electrode surfaces are generally coated with electronically insulating solid films of thickness 1-50 nm. Both electrons and Li+ can move at the electrode-surface film interface in response to the voltage, which adds complexity to the "electric double layer" (EDL). We apply Density Functional Theory (DFT) to investigate how the applied voltage is manifested as changes in the EDL at atomic lengthscales, including charge separation and interfacial dipole moments. Illustrating examples include Li(3)PO(4), Li(2)CO(3), and Li(x)Mn(2)O(4) thin-films on Au(111) surfaces under ultrahigh vacuum …
