Silicon is viewed as an excellent electrode material for lithium batteries due to its high lithium storage capacity. Various Si nano-structures, such as Si nanowires, have performed well as lithium battery anodes and have opened up exciting opportunities for the use of Si in energy storage devices. The mechanism of lithium insertion and the interaction between Li and the Si electrode must be understood at the atomic level; this understanding can be achieved by first-principles simulation. Here, first-principles computations of lithiation in silicon electrodes are reviewed. The review focuses on three aspects: the various properties of bulk Li-Si compounds with different Li concentrations, the electronic structure of Si nanowires and Li insertion behavior in Si nanowires, and the dynamic lithiation process at the Li/Si interface. Potential study directions in this research field and difficulties that the field still faces are discussed at the end.

Distributions of potential and lithium content inside lithium ion batteries highly affects their performance and durability. An increased heterogeneity of the lithium distribution is expected in thick electrodes with high energy densities or cycling at high currents. To optimize electrodes and cells designs, it is crucial to probe lithium concentration gradients across the depth of the electrode, but also to predict their occurrence and magnitude as a function of materials properties. Here, we follow the lithium distribution across a $80~μm$ thick porous graphite electrode using a $1~μm$ focus…
Due to its exceptional lithium storage capacity silicon is considered as a promising candidate for anode material in lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). In the present work we demonstrate that methods of the soft X-ray emission spectroscopy (SXES) can be used as a powerful tool for the comprehensive analysis of the electronic and structural properties of lithium silicides Li$_{x}$Si forming in LIB's anode upon Si lithiation. On the basis of density functional theory (DFT) and molecular dynamics (MD) simulations it is shown that coordination of Si atoms in Li$_{x}$Si decreases with increase in Li con…
It is shown that continuously occurring electrolyte-reduction reaction on freshly-exposed electrode surfaces during lithiation/delithiation cycles causes the lowering of cycling efficiency, and hence, capacity fade in well-cycled silicon anodes in lithium-ion batteries. Using galvanostatic lithiation/delithiation data from multiple cycles on a Li/Si half-cell, a methodology to separate the charge due to the main reaction (lithiation/delithiation of Si) from the side-reaction (electrolyte-reduction) is presented. The rate of this parasitic side reaction is estimated on well-cycled amorphous sil…
Obtaining a complete picture of local processes still poses a significant challenge in battery research. Here we demonstrate an in-situ combination of multimodal neutron imaging with neutron diffraction for spatially resolved operando observations of the lithiation-delithiation of a graphite electrode in a Li-ion battery cell. Throughout the lithiation-delithiation process we image the Li distribution based on the local beam attenuation. Simultaneously, we observe the development of the lithiated graphite phases as a function of cycling time and electrode thickness and integral throughout its …
Spinel lithium manganese oxide (LixMn2O4) is used as an active material in battery cathodes. It is a relatively inexpensive and environmentally friendly material, but suffers from capacity fade during use. The capacity losses are generally attributed to the formation of the tetragonal phase (x > 1) due to overpotentials at the surfaces of the micron-sized particles that are used in commercial electrodes. In this study, we investigate the mechanisms of tetragonal phase formation by performing electrochemical lithiation (discharging) in-situ in the transmission electron microscope (TEM) utilizin…
A first-principles study on the effect of oxygen content on the structural and electronic properties of silicon suboxide as anode material for Lithium Ion Batteries
Silicon is one of the most promising anode materials for Lithium-ion batteries. Silicon endures volume changes upon cycling, which leads to subsequent pulverization and capacity fading. These drawbacks lead to a poor lifespan and hamper the commercialization of silicon anodes. In this work, a hybrid nanostructured anode based on silicon nanoparticles (SiNPs) anchored on vertically aligned carbon nanotubes (VACNTs) with defined spacing to accommodate volumetric changes is synthesized on commercial macroscopic current collector. Achieving electrodes with good stability and excellent electrochemi…
Wadsley--Roth crystallographic shear phases form a family of compounds that have attracted attention due to their excellent performance as lithium-ion battery electrodes. The complex crystallographic structure of these materials poses a challenge for first-principles computational modelling and hinders the understanding of their structural, electronic and dynamic properties. In this article, we study three different niobium-tungsten oxide crystallographic shear phases (Nb$_{12}$WO$_{33}$, Nb$_{14}$W$_{3}$O$_{44}$, Nb$_{16}$W$_5$O$_{55}$) using an enumeration-based approach and first-principles…
Upon insertion and extraction of lithium, materials important for electrochemical energy storage can undergo changes in thermal conductivity ($Λ$) and elastic modulus ($\it M$). These changes are attributed to evolution of the intrinsic thermal carrier lifetime and interatomic bonding strength associated with structural transitions of electrode materials with varying degrees of reversibility. Using in situ time-domain thermoreflectance (TDTR) and picosecond acoustics, we systemically study $Λ$ and $\it M$ of conversion, intercalation and alloying electrode materials during cycling. The interca…
We consider the factors that affect the photoactivity of silicon electrodes for the water-splitting reaction using a self-consistent continuum solvation (SCCS) model of the solid-liquid interface. This model allows us to calculate the charge-voltage response, Schottky barriers, and surface stability of different terminations while accounting for the interactions between the charge-pinning centers at the surface and the depletion region of the semiconductor. We predict that the most stable oxidized surface does not have a favorable Schottky barrier, which further explains the low solar-to-hydro…

Room temperature operation of a spin exclusive or (XOR) gate was demonstrated in lateral spin valve devices with nondegenerate silicon (Si) channels. The spin XOR gate is a fundamental part of the magnetic logic gate (MLG) that enables reconfigurable and nonvolatile NAND or OR operation in one device. The device for the spin XOR gate consists of three iron (Fe)/cobalt (Co)/magnesium oxide (MgO) electrodes, i.e., two input and one output electrodes. Spins are injected into the Si channel from the input electrodes whose spin angular momentum corresponds to the binary input 1 or 0. The spin drift…
Resistive switching in amorphous silicon carbide (a-SiC) films deposited by a single composite target magnetron sputtering process is reported. Switching performance as a function of thickness of the films (50, 100 and 300 nm) as well as different top metal electrodes (Cu, Pt and Ag) with the bottom electrode fixed as Au, is investigated. The switching parameters (Forming Voltage, Set and Reset voltages and corresponding currents) are found to be dependent on thickness of SiC films and it is observed that 100 nm is the optimal thickness for best endurance. The interface between metal electrode…
Lithium intercalation into graphite is the foundation for the lithium-ion battery, and the thermodynamics of the lithiation of graphitic electrodes have been heavily investigated. Intercalated lithium in bulk graphite undergoes structural ordering known as staging to minimize electrostatic repulsions within the crystal lattice. While this process is well-understood for bulk graphite, confinement effects become important at the nanoscale, which can significantly impact the electrochemistry of nanostructured electrodes. Therefore, graphene offers a model platform to study intercalation dynamics …

Silicon carbide has excellent physical properties, such as high stability, thermal conductivity, and mechanical strength. It has been widely used in high-power devices, catalysis, material processing, and other fields and is of great significance in basic discipline research. We used crystal structure search and first principles calculation to predict four new silicon carbide structures stabilized within 3TPa. Pnma (SiC) replaces B1 (SiC) above 2.6TPa, and the new component Si3C2 becomes the most stable after 2.5TPa. P4/mbm phase Si3C2 under high pressure has electrode characteristics. The sil…

Conductive polymers can be used to replace expensive metallic inks such as silver and gold nanoparticles for printing technology. Electrical conductivity of the polymers can be improved by blending with carbon nanotubes.
