Lithium titanium oxide Li$_4$Ti$_5$O$_{12}$ (LTO) is an intriguing anode material promising particularly long lived batteries, due to its remarkable phase stability during (dis)charging of the cell. However, its usage is limited by its low intrinsic electronic conductivity. Introducing oxygen vacancies can be one method to overcome this drawback, possibly by altering the charge carrier transport mechanism. We use Hubbard corrected density-functional theory (DFT+U) to show that polaronic states in combination with a possible hopping mechanism can play a crucial role in the experimentally observed increase of electronic conductivity. To gauge polaronic charge mobility, we compute relative stabilities of different localization patterns and estimate polaron hopping barrier heights. With this we finally show how defect engineering can indeed raise the electronic conductivity of LTO up to the level of its ionic conductivity, thereby explaining first experimental results for reduced LTO.
Electron localization and polaron mobility in oxygen deficient as well as Li doped monoclinic tungsten trioxide have been studied. We show that small polarons formed in the presence of oxygen vacancy prefer the bipolaronic $W^{5+}- W^{5+}$ configuration whereas the $W^{6+}- W^{4+}$ configuration is found to be metastable. Our calculations suggest that bipolarons are tightly bound by the vacancy and therefore largely immobile. On the contrary, polarons formed as a result of Li intercalation can be mobile, the activation energy for polaron jumping in this case varies between 98 and 124 meV depen…
Density-functional theory within a Berry-phase formulation of the dynamical polarization is used to determine the second-order susceptibility $χ^{(2)}$ of lithium niobate (LiNbO$_3$). Defect trapped polarons and bipolarons are found to strongly enhance the nonlinear susceptibility of the material, in particular if localized at Nb$_\mathrm{V}$-V$_{\mathrm{Li}}$ defect pairs. This is essentially a consequence of the polaronic excitation resulting in relaxation-induced gap states. The occupation of these levels leads to strongly enhanced $χ^{(2)}$ coefficients and allows for the spatial and trans…
We report on \textit{ab initio} electronic structure simulations of Li$_2$O$_2$, where 1.6% of lithium atoms are substituted by silicon. It is demonstrated that this leads to the formation of conducting impurity states in the band gap of Li$_2$O$_2$. We show that these states originate from the antibonding orbitals of the oxygen pairs and are remarkably stable against possible polaron formation (upon electron injection). Through this polaron preemption mechanism, the proposed compound is expected to show significantly higher electronic mobility than stoichiometric Li$_2$O$_2$, which could have…
The mechanisms and efficiency of charge transport in lithium peroxide (Li2O2) are key factors in understanding the performance of non-aqueous Li-air batteries. Towards revealing these mechanisms, here we use first-principles calculations to predict the concentrations and mobilities of charge carriers and intrinsic defects in Li2O2 as a function of cell voltage. Our calculations reveal that changes in the charge state of O2 dimers controls the defect chemistry and conductivity of Li2O2. Negative lithium vacancies (missing Li+) and small hole polarons are identified as the dominant charge carrie…
Layered LiMnO$_2$ and Li$_2$MnO$_3$ are of great interest for lithium-ion battery cathodes because of their high theoretical capacities. The practical application of these materials is, however, limited due to poor electrochemical performance. We herein report a comprehensive first-principles study of defect physics in LiMnO$_2$ and Li$_2$MnO$_3$ using hybrid-density functional calculations. We find that manganese antisites have low formation energies in LiMnO$_2$ and may act as nucleation sites for the formation of impurity phases. The antisites can also occur with high concentrations in Li$_…
We report a comprehensive first-principles study of the thermodynamics and transport of intrinsic point defects in layered oxide cathode materials LiMO$_2$ (M=Co, Ni), using density-functional theory and the Heyd-Scuseria-Ernzerhof screened hybrid functional. We find that LiCoO$_2$ has a complex defect chemistry; different electronic and ionic defects can exist under different synthesis conditions, and LiCoO$_2$ samples free of cobalt antisite defects can be made under Li-excess (Co-deficient) environments. A defect model for lithium over-stoichiometric LiCoO$_2$ is also proposed, which involv…
We report a first-principles study of defect thermodynamics and transport in spinel-type lithium manganese oxide LiMn$_2$O$_4$, an important lithium-ion battery electrode material, using density-functional theory and the Heyd-Scuseria-Ernzerhof screened hybrid functional. We find that intrinsic point defects in LiMn$_2$O$_4$ have low formation energies and hence can occur with high concentrations. The electronic conduction proceeds via hopping of small polarons and the ionic conduction occurs via lithium vacancy and/or interstitialcy migration mechanisms. The total conductivity is dominated by…
Using the first-principles calculations, we report the existence of the single-layer (SL) di-titanium oxide Ti$_2$O (labeled as MOene) that constructs a novel family of MXene based on transition metal oxides. This MOene material strongly contrasts the conventional ones consisting of transition metal carbides and/or nitrides. SL Ti$_2$O has high thermal and dynamical stabilities due to the strong Ti$-$O ionic bonding interactions. Moreover, this material is an intrinsic electride and exhibits extremely low diffusion barriers of $\sim$12.0 and 6.3 meV for Li- and Na diffusion, respectively. When…
Olivine-type LiFePO$_{4}$ is widely considered as a candidate for Li-ion battery electrodes, yet its applicability in the pristine state is limited due to poor ionic and electronic conduction. Doping can be employed to enhance the material's electrical conductivity. However, this should be understood as incorporating electrically active impurities to manipulate the concentration of native point defects such as lithium vacancies and small hole polarons which are responsible for ionic and electronic conduction, respectively, and {\it not} as generating band-like carriers. Possible effects of mon…
Charge trapping and formation of polarons is a pervasive phenomenon in transition metal oxide compounds, in particular at the surface, affecting fundamental physical properties and functionalities of the hosting materials. Here we investigate via first-principle techniques the formation and dynamics of small polarons on the reduced surface of titanium dioxide, an archetypal system for polarons, for a wide range of oxygen vacancy concentrations. We report how the essential features of polarons can be adequately accounted in terms of few quantities: the local structural and chemical environment,…
Supercapacitor electrodes fabricated from a nanocomposite consisting of multiwall carbon nanotubes and titanium oxide nanoparticles were characterized electrochemically. Conventional electrochemical characterizations cyclic voltammetry and galvanostatic charge-discharge in a lithium-based electrolyte gave a specific capacitance of 345 F/g at a current density of 0.1 A/g. New electrochemical characterization techniques that allow one to obtain the peak capacitance associated with intercalation and to distinguish between electrostatic and faradaic charge storage are described and applied to the …
Natural abundance of sodium and its similar behavior to lithium triggered recent extensive studies of cost-effective sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) for large-scale energy storage systems. A challenge is to develop electrode materials with a high electrode potential, specific capacity and a good rate capability. In this work we propose mixed eldfellite compounds \ce{Na_x(Fe_{1/2}M_{1/2})(SO4)2} (M = Mn, Co, Ni) as a new family of high electrode potential cathodes of SIBs and present their material properties predicted by first-principles calculations. The structural optimizations show that these m…
