The object of this work is the numerical investigation of a non-commutative field theory defined via the spectral action principle. The Starting point is a spectral triple (A,H,D) referred to as harmonic. The construction of these data relies on an 8-dimensional Clifford algebra. The spectral action is computed for the product of the triple (A,H,D) with a matrix-valued spectral triple. Renormalization theory associates to the spectral action a probability measure. Its associated correlation functions define then a field theory. In the perturbative approach this measure is constructed as a formal power series. This requires explicit knowledge of the solutions of the Euler-Lagrange equations. For the model under consideration, it turns out impossible to obtain these solutions. An alternative approach consists in a discretization of all variables and a numerical investigation of the behavior of the correlation functions when the discretization becomes finer. Despite the complexity of the approximated spectral action, some reliable numerical results are obtained, showing that a numerical treatment of this kind of models in the Moyal matrix basis is possible.
The noncommutative scalar theory with harmonic term (on the Moyal space) has a vanishing beta function. In this paper, we prove the renormalizability of the commutative scalar field theory with harmonic term to all orders by using multiscale analysis in the momentum space. Then, we consider and compute its one-loop beta function, as well as the one on the degenerate Moyal space. We can finally compare both to the vanishing beta function of the theory with harmonic term on the Moyal space.
We present a first numerical investigation of a non-commutative gauge theory defined via the spectral action for Moyal space with harmonic propagation. This action is approximated by finite matrices. Using Monte Carlo simulation we study various quantities such as the energy density, the specific heat density and some order parameters, varying the matrix size and the independent parameters of the model. We find a peak structure in the specific heat which might indicate possible phase transitions. However, there are mathematical arguments which show that the limit of infinite matrices is very d…
It is explained how the time evolution of the operadic variables may be introduced by using the operadic Lax equation. The operadic Lax representations for the harmonic oscillator are constructed in 3-dimensional binary anti-commutative algebras. As an example, an operadic Lax representation for the harmonic oscillator in the Lie algebra sl(2) is constructed.
The lowest eigenvalue of non-commutative harmonic oscillators $Q$ is studied. It is shown that $Q$ can be decomposed into four self-adjoint operators, and all the eigenvalues of each operator are simple. We show that the lowest eigenvalue $E$ of $Q$ is simple. Furthermore a Jacobi matrix representation of $Q$ is given and spectrum of $Q$ is considered numerically.
In this paper we give a meromorphic continuation of the spectral zeta function for semiregular Non-Commutative Harmonic Oscillators (NCHO). By ``semiregular system'' we mean systems with terms with degree of homogeneity scaling by $1$ in their asymptotic expansion. As an application of our results, we first compute the meromorphic continuation of the Jaynes-Cummings (JC) model spectral zeta function. Then we compute the spectral zeta function of the JC generalization to a 3-level atom in a cavity. For both of them we show that it has only one pole in 1.
The Hilbert-Schmidt operator formulation of non-commutative quantum mechanics in 2D Moyal plane is shown to allow one to construct Schwinger's SU(2) generators. Using this the SU(2) symmetry aspect of both commutative and non-commutative harmonic oscillator are studied and compared. Particularly, in the non-commutative case we demonstrate the existence of a critical point in the parameter space of mass and angular frequency where there is a manifest SU(2) symmetry for a unphysical harmonic oscillator Hamiltonian built out of commuting (unphysical yet covariantly transforming under SU(2)) posit…
In this study, we investigate the effects of noncommutative Quantum Mechanics in three dimensions on the energy levels of a charged isotropic harmonic oscillator in the presence of a uniform magnetic field in the z-direction. The extension of this problem to three dimensions proves to be non-trivial. We obtain the first-order corrections to the energy-levels in closed form in the low energy limit of weak noncommutativity. The most important result we can note is that all energy corrections due to noncommutativity are negative and their magnitude increase with increasing Quantum numbers and mag…
We refine the reconstruction theorem for almost-commutative spectral triples to a result for real almost-commutative spectral triples, clarifying, in the process, both concrete and abstract definitions of real commutative and almost-commutative spectral triples. In particular, we find that a real almost-commutative spectral triple algebraically encodes the commutative *-algebra of the base manifold in a canonical way, and that a compact oriented Riemannian manifold admits real (almost-)commutative spectral triples of arbitrary KO-dimension. Moreover, we define a notion of smooth family of real…
Using the Chamseddine--Connes approach of the noncommutative action on spectral triples, we show that there are no tadpoles of any order for compact spin manifolds without boundary, and also consider a case of a chiral boundary condition. Using pseudodifferential techniques, we track zero terms in spectral actions.
The theory of alpha_star-cohomology is studied thoroughly and it is shown that in each cohomology class there exists a unique 2-cocycle, the harmonic form, which generates a particular Groenewold-Moyal star product. This leads to an algebraic classification of translation-invariant non-commutative structures and shows that any general translationinvariant non-commutative quantum field theory is physically equivalent to a Groenewold- Moyal non-commutative quantum field theory.
We investigate a system of two coupled harmonic oscillators on the non-commutative plane \RR^2_θ by requiring that the spatial coordinates do not commute. We show that the system can be diagonalized by a suitable transformation, i.e. a rotation with a mixing angle α. The obtained eigenstates as well as the eigenvalues depend on the non-commutativity parameter θ. Focusing on the ground state wave function before the transformation, we calculate the density matrix ρ_0(θ) and find that its traces {\rm Tr}(ρ_{0}(θ)) and {\rm Tr}(ρ_0^2(θ)) are not affected by the non-commutativity. Evaluating the W…
We consider a model of non-commutative Quantum Mechanics given by two harmonic oscillators over a non-commutative two dimensional configuration space. We study possible ways of removing the non-commutativity based on the classical limit context known as anti-Wick quantization. We show that removal of non-commutativity from the configuration space and from the canonical operators are not commuting operations.
In this work we investigate which radial field configuration yields bound states for neutral particles showing non-zero magnetic and electric dipole moments. The main result is that, in contrast with previous works, the Landau analog levels only exist if these radial magnetic and electric external fields are proportional to the third power of distance, not proportional to the distance. We derive the wave functions and the energy levels in the context of commutative and non-commutative quantum mechanics. We also show that, in the case of non-commutative phase space, these harmonic oscillator li…
In this short communication, we examine the relevance of the signature of the space-time metric in the construction of the product of a pseudo-Riemannian spectral triple with a finite triple describing the internal geometry. We obtain arguments favouring the appearance of SU(2) and U(1) as gauge groups in the standard model.
Classical differential geometry can be encoded in spectral data, such as Connes' spectral triples, involving supersymmetry algebras. In this paper, we formulate non-commutative geometry in terms of supersymmetric spectral data. This leads to generalizations of Connes' non-commutative spin geometry encompassing non-commutative Riemannian, symplectic, complex-Hermitian and (Hyper-)Kaehler geometry. A general framework for non-commutative geometry is developed from the point of view of supersymmetry and illustrated in terms of examples. In particular, the non-commutative torus and the non-commuta…
We propose an expansion of the definition of almost-commutative spectral triple that accommodates non-trivial fibrations and is stable under inner fluctuation of the metric, and then prove a reconstruction theorem for almost-commutative spectral triples under this definition as a simple consequence of Connes's reconstruction theorem for commutative spectral triples. Along the way, we weaken the orientability hypothesis in the reconstruction theorem for commutative spectral triples, and following Chakraborty and Mathai, prove a number of results concerning the stability of properties of spectra…
We formulate conditions under which the asymptotically expanded spectral action on an almost commutative manifold is renormalizable as a higher-derivative gauge theory. These conditions are of graph theoretical nature, involving the Krajewski diagrams that classify such manifolds. This generalizes our previous result on (super)renormalizability of the asymptotically expanded Yang-Mills spectral action to a more general class of particle physics models that can be described geometrically in terms of a noncommutative space. In particular, it shows that the asymptotically expanded spectral action…
In analogy with conventional quantum mechanics, non-commutative quantum mechanics is formulated as a quantum system on the Hilbert space of Hilbert-Schmidt operators acting on non-commutative configuration space. It is argued that the standard quantum mechanical interpretation based on Positive Operator Valued Measures, provides a sufficient framework for the consistent interpretation of this quantum system. The implications of this formalism for rotational and time reversal symmetry are discussed. The formalism is applied to the free particle and harmonic oscillator in two dimensions and the …
Forming the product of two geometric spaces is one of the most basic operations in geometry, but in the spectral-triple formulation of non-commutative geometry, the standard prescription for taking the product of two real spectral triples is problematic: among other drawbacks, it is non-commutative, non-associative, does not transform properly under unitaries, and often fails to define a proper spectral triple. In this paper, we explain that these various problems result from using the ungraded tensor product; by switching to the graded tensor product, we obtain a new prescription where all of…
In this paper, we present a framework to construct sequences of spectral triples on top of an inductive sequence defining an $AF$-algebra. One aim of this paper is to lift arrows of a Bratteli diagram to arrows between Krajewski diagrams. The spectral actions defining Non-commutative Gauge Field Theories associated to two spectral triples related by these arrows are compared (tensored by a commutative spectral triple to put us in the context of Almost Commutative manifolds). This paper is a follow up of a previous one in which this program was defined and physically illustrated in the framewor…
The purpose of the present paper is to study the number theoretic properties of the special values of the spectral zeta functions of the non-commutative harmonic oscillator (NcHO), especially in relation to modular forms and elliptic curves from the viewpoint of Fuchsian differential equations, and deepen the understanding of the spectrum of the NcHO. We study first the general expression of special values of the spectral zeta function $ζ_Q(s)$ of the NcHO at $s=n$ $(n=2,3,\dots)$ and then the generating and meta-generating functions for Apéry-like numbers defined through the analysis of speci…
We review the construction of the Dirac operator and its properties in Riemannian geometry and show how the asymptotic expansion of the trace of the heat kernel determines the spectral invariants of the Dirac operator and its index. We also point out that the Einstein-Hilbert functional can be obtained as a linear combination of the first two spectral invariants of the Dirac operator. Next, we report on our previous attempts to generalize the notion of the Dirac operator to the case of Matrix Geometry, when instead of a Riemannian metric there is a matrix valued self-adjoint symmetric two-tens…
Callias-type (or Dirac-Schrödinger) operators associated to abstract semifinite spectral triples are introduced and their indices are computed in terms of an associated index pairing derived from the spectral triple. The result is then interpreted as an index theorem for a non-commutative analogue of spectral flow. Both even and odd spectral triples are considered, and both commutative and non-commutative examples are given.
A quaternionic field is a pair $p=\{α,u\}$ of function $α$ and vector field $u$ given on a 3d Riemannian maifold $Ω$ with the boundary. The field is said to be harmonic if $\nabla α={\rm rot\,}u$\, in $Ω$. The linear space of harmonic fields is not an algebra w.r.t. quaternion multiplication. However, it may contain the commutative algebras, what is the subject of the paper. Possible application of these algebras to the impedance tomography problem is touched on.
I present the exact energy eigenstates and eigenvalues of a quantum many-body system of bosons on non-commutative space and in a harmonic oszillator confining potential at the selfdual point. I also argue that this exactly solvable system is a prototype model which provides a generalization of mean field theory taking into account non-trivial correlations which are peculiar to boson systems in two space dimensions and relevant in condensed matter physics. The prologue and epilogue contain a few remarks to relate my main story to recent developments in non-commutative quantum field theory and a…
In this paper the stationary Klein-Gordon equation is considered for the Coulomb potential in non-commutative space. The energy shift due to noncommutativeity is obtained via the perturbation theory. Furthermore, we show that the degeneracy of the initial spectral line is broken in transition from commutative space to non-commutative space.
The non-commutative harmonic oscillator (NCHO) is a matrix valued differential operator originally introduced as a generalization of the quantum harmonic oscillator having a weaker $\mathfrak{sl}_2(\mathbb{R})$-symmetry. The spectrum of the NCHO has remarkable properties, including the presence of number theoretical structures such as modular forms, elliptic curves and Eichler cohomology observed in the special values of the associated spectral zeta function. In addition, the Heun ODE picture of the eigenvalue problem of the NCHO reveals a connection with the quantum Rabi model (QRM), a fundam…
We study non Hermitian quantum systems in noncommutative space as well as a \cal{PT}-symmetric deformation of this space. Specifically, a \mathcal{PT}-symmetric harmonic oscillator together with iC(x_1+x_2) interaction is discussed in this space and solutions are obtained. It is shown that in the \cal{PT} deformed noncommutative space the Hamiltonian may or may not possess real eigenvalues depending on the choice of the noncommutative parameters. However, it is shown that in standard noncommutative space, the iC(x_1+x_2) interaction generates only real eigenvalues despite the fact that the Ham…
The phase space given by the cotangent bundle of a Lie group appears in the context of several models for physical systems. A representation for the quantum system in terms of non-commutative functions on the (dual) Lie algebra, and a generalized notion of (non-commutative) Fourier transform, different from standard harmonic analysis, has been recently developed, and found several applications, especially in the quantum gravity literature. We show that this algebra representation can be defined on the sole basis of a quantization map of the classical Poisson algebra, and identify the condition…
We classify the twists of almost commutative spectral triples that keep the Hilbert space and the Dirac operator untouched. The involved twisting operator is shown to be the product of the grading of a manifold by a finite dimensional operator, which is not necessarily a grading of the internal space. Necessary and sufficient constraints on this operator are listed.
We study a notion of non-commutative integration, in the spirit of modular spectral triples, for the quantum group $SU_{q}(2)$. In particular we define the non-commutative integral as the residue at the spectral dimension of a zeta function, which is constructed using a Dirac operator and a weight. We consider the Dirac operator introduced by Kaad and Senior and a family of weights depending on two parameters, which are related to the diagonal automorphisms of $SU_{q}(2)$. We show that, after fixing one of the parameters, the non-commutative integral coincides with the Haar state of $SU_{q}(2)…
We investigate further alebro-geometric properties of commutative rings of partial differential operators continuing our research started in previous articles. In particular, we start to explore the most evident examples and also certain known examples of algebraically integrable quantum completely integrable systems from the point of view of a recent generalization of Sato's theory which belongs to the second author. We give a complete characterisation of the spectral data for a class of "trivial" rings and strengthen geometric properties known earlier for a class of known examples. We also d…
We construct examples of commuting ordinary scalar differential operators with polynomial coefficients that are related to a spectral curve of an arbitrary genus g and to an arbitrary even rank r = 2k, and also to an arbitrary rank of the form r = 3k, of the vector bundle of common eigenfunctions of the commuting operators over the spectral curve.
A Banach involutive algebra is called a Krein C*-algebra if there is a fundamental symmetry (an involutive automorphism of period 2) such that the C*-property is satisfied when the original involution is replaced with the new one obtained by composing the automorphism with the old involution. For a given fundamental symmetry, a Krein C*-algebra decomposes as a direct sum of an even part (a C*-algebra) and an odd part (a Hilbert C*-bimodule on the even part). Our goal here is to develop a spectral theory for commutative unital Krein C*-algebras when the odd part is a symmetric imprimitivity C*-…
A class of real spectral triples that are similar in structure to a Riemannian manifold but have a finite-dimensional Hilbert space is defined and investigated, determining a general form for the Dirac operator. Examples include fuzzy spaces defined as real spectral triples. Fuzzy 2-spheres are investigated in detail, and it is shown that the fuzzy analogues correspond to two spinor fields on the commutative sphere. In some cases it is necessary to add a mass mixing matrix to the commutative Dirac operator to get a precise agreement for the eigenvalues.
The Berezin-Klauder-Toeplitz ("anti-Wick") quantization or "non-commutative reading" of the complex plane, viewed as the phase space of a particle moving on the line, is derived from the resolution of the unity provided by the standard (or gaussian) coherent states. The construction properties of these states and their attractive properties are essentially based on the energy spectrum of the harmonic oscillator, that is on the natural numbers. This work is an attempt for following the same path by considering sequences of non-negative numbers which are not "too far" from the natural numbers. I…
There are two notions of Yang-Mills action functional in noncommutative geometry. We show that for noncommutative n-torus both these notions agree. We also prove a structure theorem on the Hermitian structure of a finitely generated projective modules over spectrally invariant subalgebras of $C^*$-algebras.
We propose an architecture of a conjecture concerning the Riemann Hypothesis in the form of an "alternative" to the Pólya strategy: we construct a Hamiltonian H_Polya whose spectrum coincides exactly with that of the Harmonic Oscillator Hamiltonian H_osc if and only if the Riemann Hypothesis holds true. In other words, it can be said that we formulate the Riemann Hypothesis by means of a non-commutative structure on the real axis, viz., that of the Harmonic Oscillator, by an equation of the type H_Polya(H_osc) = H_osc: the Harmonic Oscillator operator, if viewed as an argument of H_Polya, repr…
For differential operators which are invariant under the action of an abelian group Bloch theory is the tool of choice to analyze spectral properties. By shedding some new non-commutative light on this we motivate the introduction of a non-commutative Bloch theory for elliptic operators on Hilbert C*-modules. It relates properties of C*-algebras to spectral properties of module operators such as band structure, weak genericity of cantor spectra, and absence of discrete spectrum. It applies e.g. to differential operators invariant under a projective group action, such as Schroedinger operators …

We discuss a version of Pythagoras theorem in noncommutative geometry. Usual Pythagoras theorem can be formulated in terms of Connes' distance, between pure states, in the product of commutative spectral triples. We investigate the generalization to both non pure states and arbitrary spectral triples. We show that Pythagoras theorem is replaced by some Pythagoras inequalities, that we prove for the product of arbitrary (i.e. non-necessarily commutative) spectral triples, assuming only some unitality condition. We show that these inequalities are optimal, and provide non-unital counter-examples…
Links of factorization theory, supersymmetry and Darboux transformations as isospectral deformations are considered in the context of quantum theory. The infinite chain equations for factorizing operators for a spectral problem are derived. A closure of the chain defines a symmetry of the system. Examples of matrix-differential operators of Pauli and Dirac type are analyzed.
We define pseudo-Riemannian spectral triples, an analytic context broad enough to encompass a spectral description of a wide class of pseudo-Riemannian manifolds, as well as their noncommutative generalisations. Our main theorem shows that to each pseudo-Riemannian spectral triple we can associate a genuine spectral triple, and so a K-homology class. With some additional assumptions we can then apply the local index theorem. We give a range of examples and some applications. The example of the harmonic oscillator in particular shows that our main theorem applies to much more than just classica…
We study harmonic measure in finite graphs with an emphasis on expanders, that is, positive spectral gap. It is shown that if the spectral gap is positive then for all sets that are not too large the harmonic measure from a uniform starting point is not more than a constant factor of the uniform measure on the set. For large sets there is a tight logarithmic correction factor. We also show that positive spectral gap does not allow for a fixed proportion of the harmonic measure of sets to be supported on small subsets, in contrast to the situation in Euclidean space. The results are quantitativ…
