In analogy with conventional quantum mechanics, non-commutative quantum mechanics is formulated as a quantum system on the Hilbert space of Hilbert-Schmidt operators acting on non-commutative configuration space. It is argued that the standard quantum mechanical interpretation based on Positive Operator Valued Measures, provides a sufficient framework for the consistent interpretation of this quantum system. The implications of this formalism for rotational and time reversal symmetry are discussed. The formalism is applied to the free particle and harmonic oscillator in two dimensions and the physical signatures of non commutativity are identified.
The He-McKellar-Wilkens(HMW) effect for spin one neutral particle in non-commutative quantum mechanics is studied. By solving the Kemmer like equations on non-commutative (NC) space and non-commutative phase space, we obtain topological He-McKellar-Wilkens phase on NC space and NC phase space respectively, where the additional terms related to the space-space and momentum-momentum non-commutativity are given explicitly.
We consider a model of non-commutative Quantum Mechanics given by two harmonic oscillators over a non-commutative two dimensional configuration space. We study possible ways of removing the non-commutativity based on the classical limit context known as anti-Wick quantization. We show that removal of non-commutativity from the configuration space and from the canonical operators are not commuting operations.
By using a generalized Bopp's shift formulation, instead of star product method, we investigate the Aharonov-Casher(AC) effect for a spin-1 neutral particle in non-commutative(NC) quantum mechanics. After solving the Kemmer equations both on a non-commutative space and a non-commutative phase space, we obtain the corrections to the topological phase of the AC effect for a spin-1 neutral particle both on a NC space and a NC phase space.
In this article, I propose a concept of the $p$-on which is modelled on the multi-photon absorptions in quantum optics. It provides a commutative ring structure in quantum mechanics. Using it, I will give an operator representation of the Riemann $ζ$ function.
We show that the deformation quantization of non-commutative quantum mechanics previously considered by Dias and Prata can be expressed as a Weyl calculus on a double phase space. We study the properties of the star-product thus defined, and prove a spectral theorem for the star-genvalue equation using an extension of the methods recently initiated by de Gosson and Luef.
Some aspects of the "exotic" particle, associated with the two-parameter central extension of the planar Galilei group are reviewed. A fundamental property is that it has non-commuting position coordinates. Other and generalized non-commutative models are also discussed. Minimal as well as anomalous coupling to an external electromagnetic field is presented. Supersymmetric extension is also considered. Exotic Galilean symmetry is also found in Moyal field theory. Similar equations arise for a semiclassical Bloch electron, used to explain the anomalous/spin/optical Hall effects.
We investigate consequences of space non-commutativity in quantum mechanics of the hydrogen atom. We introduce rotationally invariant noncommutative space $\hat{\bf R}^3_0$ - an analog of the hydrogen atom ($H$-atom) configuration space ${\bf R}^3_0\,=\, {\bf R}^3\setminus \{0\}$. The space $\hat{\bf R}^3_0$ is generated by noncommutative coordinates realized as operators in an auxiliary (Fock) space ${\cal F}$. We introduce the Hilbert space $\hat{\cal{H}}$ of wave functions $\hatψ$ formed by properly weighted Hilbert-Schmidt operators in ${\cal F}$. Finally, we define an analog of the $H$-at…
We generalize the formulation of non-commutative quantum mechanics to three dimensional non-commutative space. Particular attention is paid to the identification of the quantum Hilbert space in which the physical states of the system are to be represented, the construction of the representation of the rotation group on this space, the deformation of the Leibnitz rule accompanying this representation and the implied necessity of deforming the co-product to restore the rotation symmetry automorphism. This also implies the breaking of rotational invariance on the level of the Schroedinger action …
The non-relativistic hydrogen atom and the Zwanziger problem have the same dynamical symmetry for bound and scattering states. We show that this is also true for a Hilbert space which is non-commutative in co-ordinates. The group structure is described using the redefined velocity operator and Laplace Runge-Lenz operator in terms of left and right handed representations of the non-commutative Hilbert space $ R_λ^{3}$.The bound state algebra is SO(4) and the scattering state algebra is SO(3,1).
The ``exotic'' particle model with non-commuting position coordinates, associated with the two-parameter central extension of the planar Galilei group, can be used to derive the ground states of the Fractional Quantum Hall Effect. The relation to other NC models is discussed. Anomalous coupling is presented. Similar equations arise for a semiclassical Bloch electron, used to explain the anomalous/spin/optical Hall effects.
We review here the quantum mechanics of some noncommutative theories in which no state saturates simultaneously all the non trivial Heisenberg uncertainty relations. We show how the difference of structure between the Poisson brackets and the commutators in these theories generically leads to a harmonic oscillator whose positions and momenta mean values are not strictly equal to the ones predicted by classical mechanics. This raises the question of the nature of quasi classical states in these models. We propose an extension based on a variational principle. The action considered is the sum of…
The Landau problem in non-commutative quantum mechanics (NCQM) is studied. First by solving the Schr$\ddot{o}$dinger equations on noncommutative(NC) space we obtain the Landau energy levels and the energy correction that is caused by space-space noncommutativity. Then we discuss the noncommutative phase space case, namely, space-space and momentum-momentum non-commutative case, and we get the explicit expression of the Hamiltonian as well as the corresponding eigenfunctions and eigenvalues.
The algebras of non-relativistic and of classical mechanics are unstable algebraic structures. Their deformation towards stable structures leads, respectively, to relativity and to quantum mechanics. Likewise, the combined relativistic quantum mechanics algebra is also unstable. Its stabilization requires the non-commutativity of the space-time coordinates and the existence of a fundamental length constant. The new relativistic quantum mechanics algebra has important consequences on the geometry of space-time, on quantum stochastic calculus and on the construction of quantum fields. Some of th…
We formulate quantum mechanics on SO(3) using a non-commutative dual space representation for the quantum states, inspired by recent work in quantum gravity. The new non-commutative variables have a clear connection to the corresponding classical variables, and our analysis confirms them as the natural phase space variables, both mathematically and physically. In particular, we derive the first order (Hamiltonian) path integral in terms of the non-commutative variables, as a formulation of the transition amplitudes alternative to that based on harmonic analysis. We find that the non-trivial ph…
We study non Hermitian quantum systems in noncommutative space as well as a \cal{PT}-symmetric deformation of this space. Specifically, a \mathcal{PT}-symmetric harmonic oscillator together with iC(x_1+x_2) interaction is discussed in this space and solutions are obtained. It is shown that in the \cal{PT} deformed noncommutative space the Hamiltonian may or may not possess real eigenvalues depending on the choice of the noncommutative parameters. However, it is shown that in standard noncommutative space, the iC(x_1+x_2) interaction generates only real eigenvalues despite the fact that the Ham…
We formulate non-relativistic classical and quantum mechanics in the non-commutative two dimensional plane. The approach we use is based on the Galilei group, where the non-commutativity is seen as a central extension upon identification of the boost generators with the position operator. We perform a systematic study of the free particle, defined by the symmetries of the space time, which include the no-commutativity. The symmetries at the classical level are analyzed in terms of Noether's theorem. Canonical quantization is presented and the representation of the corresponding Heisenberg alge…
In 1926, Dirac stated that quantum mechanics can be obtained from classical theory through a change in the only rule. In his view, classical mechanics is formulated through commutative quantities (c-numbers) while quantum mechanics requires noncommutative one (q-numbers). The rest of theory can be unchanged. In this paper we critically review Dirac's proposition. We provide a natural formulation of classical mechanics through noncommutative quantities with a non-zero Planck constant. This is done with the help of the nilpotent unit, which squares to zero. Thus, the crucial rôle in quantum theo…
We consider Feynman's path integral approach to quantum mechanics with a noncommutativity in position and momentum sectors of the phase space. We show that a quantum-mechanical system with this kind of noncommutativity is equivalent to the another one with usual commutative coordinates and momenta. We found connection between quadratic classical Hamiltonians, as well as Lagrangians, in their commutative and noncommutative regimes. The general procedure to compute Feynman's path integral on this noncommutative phase space with quadratic Lagrangians (Hamiltonians) is presented. Using this approa…
We compare the non-commutative quantum mechanics (NCQM) on sphere and the discrete part of the spectrum of NCQM on pseudosphere (Lobachevsky plane, or $AdS_2$) in the presence of a constant magnetic field $B$ with planar NCQM. We show, that (pseudo)spherical NCQM has a ``critical point'', where the system becomes effectively one-dimensional, and two different ``phases'', which the phases of the planar system originate from, specified by the sign of the parameter $κ=1-Bθ$. The ``critical point'' of (pseudo)spherical NCQM corresponds to the $κ\to\infty $ point of conventional planar NCQM, and to…
Anderson's nonstandard construction of brownian motion as an infinitesimal random walk on the euclidean line is generalized to an Hausdorff riemannian manifold. A nonstandard Feynman-Kac formula holding on such an Hausdorff riemannian manifold is derived. Indications are given on how these (radically elementary) results could allow to formulate a nonstandard version of Stochastic Mechanics (avoiding both the explicitly discussed bugs of Internal Set Theory as well as the controversial renormalization of the stochastic action). It is anyway remarked how this would contribute to hide the basic f…
Being neither commutative nor associative, Einstein velocity addition of relativistically admissible velocities gives rise to gyrations. Gyrations, in turn, measure the extent to which Einstein addition deviates from commutativity and from associativity. Gyrations are geometric automorphisms abstracted from the relativistic mechanical effect known as Thomas precession.
We study recently introduced Desargues maps, which provide simple geometric interpretation of the non-commutative Hirota--Miwa system. We characterize them as maps of the A-type root lattice into a projective space such that images of vertices of any basic regular N-simplex are collinear. Such a characterization is manifestly invariant with respect to the corresponding affine Weyl group action, which leads to related symmetries of the Hirota--Miwa system.
Despite the impressive amount of literature on the foundations of quantum mechanics, the relevance of symmetry in interpretation is not properly acknowledged. In fact, although it is usually said that quantum mechanics is invariant under the Galilean group, the invariance is usually not discussed in the case of the interpretation of the theory. This situation is particularly pressing for realist positions, which want to know how reality would be if quantum mechanics were true. From a realist perspective, it seems reasonable to require that an interpretation of quantum mechanics, to be admissib…
We investigate properties of the covariance matrix in the framework of non-commutative quantum mechanics for an one-parameter family of transformations between the familiar Heisenberg-Weyl algebra and a particular extension of it. Employing as a measure of the Robertson-Schrödinger uncertainty principle the linear symplectic capacity of the Weyl ellipsoid (and its dual), we determine its corresponding bounds. Inequalities between the capacities for non-commutative phase-spaces are established. We also present a constructive example based on a simple model to justify our theoretical predictions…
In a series of recent papers we have introduced a new interpretation of quantum mechanics, which for brevity we will call the Montevideo interpretation. In it, the quantum to classical transition is achieved via a phenomenon called "undecidability" which stems from environmental decoherence supplemented with a fundamental mechanism of loss of coherence due to gravity. Due to the fact that the interpretation grew from several results that are dispersed in the literature, we put together this straightforward-to-read article addressing some of the main points that may confuse readers.
The general aim of this paper is to extend the Modal-Hamiltonian interpretation of quantum mechanics to the case of relativistic quantum mechanics with gauge U(1) elds. In this case we propose that the actual- valued observables are the Casimir operators of the Poincaré group and of the group U(1) of the internal symmetry of the theory. Moreover, we also show that the magnitudes that acquire actual values in the relativistic and in the non-relativistic cases are correctly related through the adequate limit.
