Some aspects of the "exotic" particle, associated with the two-parameter central extension of the planar Galilei group are reviewed. A fundamental property is that it has non-commuting position coordinates. Other and generalized non-commutative models are also discussed. Minimal as well as anomalous coupling to an external electromagnetic field is presented. Supersymmetric extension is also considered. Exotic Galilean symmetry is also found in Moyal field theory. Similar equations arise for a semiclassical Bloch electron, used to explain the anomalous/spin/optical Hall effects.
Logarithmic representations of the conformal Galilean algebra (CGA) and the Exotic Conformal Galilean algebra ({\sc ecga}) are constructed. This can be achieved by non-decomposable representations of the scaling dimensions or the rapidity indices, specific to conformal galilean algebras. Logarithmic representations of the non-exotic CGA lead to the expected constraints on scaling dimensions and rapidities and also on the logarithmic contributions in the co-variant two-point functions. We show that the Lukierski et al. model, invariant with respect to the two-fold centrally extended Galilei group, can be decomposed into an infinite number of independent copies (differing in their spin) of the ``exotic'' particle of Duval et al. The difference between the two models is found to be sensitive to electromagnetic coupling. The nature of the noncommutative plane coordinates is discussed in the light of the exotic Galilean symmetry. We describe the general class of $N$-extended $D=(2+1)$ Galilean supersymmetries obtained, respectively, from the $N$-extended D=3 Poincaré superalgebras with maximal sets of central charges. We confirm the consistency of supersymmetry with the presence of the `exotic' second central charge $θ$. We show further how to introduce a N=2 Galilean superfield equation describing nonrelativistic spin 0 and spin 1/2 free particles.

When coupled to a planar magnetic field whose strength is the inverse of the non-commutative parameter, the system becomes singular, and ``Faddeev-Jackiw'' reduction yields the ``Chern-Simons'' mechanics of Dunne, Jackiw, and Trugenberger. The reduced system moves according to the Hall law.
An effective U(1) gauge invariant theory is constructed for a non-commutative Schrodinger field coupled to a background U(1)_{\star} gauge field in 2+1-dimensions using first order Seiberg-Witten map. We show that this effective theory can be cast in the form of usual Schrodinger action with interaction terms of noncommutative origin provided the gauge field is of ``background'' type with constant magnetic field. The Galilean symmetry is investigated and a violation is found in the boost sector. We also consider the problem of Hall conductivity in this framework.
In order to derive a large set of Hamiltonian dynamical systems, but with only first order Lagrangian, we resort to the formulation in terms of Lagrange-Souriau 2-form formalism. A wide class of systems derived in different phenomenological contexts are covered. The non-commutativity of the particle position coordinates are a natural consequence. Some explicit examples are considered.
We discuss non-relativistic conformal algebras generalizing the Schrödinger algebra. One instance of these algebras is a conformal, acceleration-extended, Galilei algebra, which arises also as a contraction of the relativistic conformal algebra. In two dimensions, this admits an "exotic" central extension, whereby boosts do not commute. We study general properties of non-relativistic conformal field theories with such symmetry. Vortex dynamics in a thin superfluid ${}^4$He film as well as in a type II superconductor is described by the classical counterpart of the model advocated by Peierls, and used for deriving the ground states of the Fractional Quantum Hall Effect. The model has non-commuting coordinates, and is obtained by reduction from a particle associated with the ``exotic'' extension of the planar Galilei group.

The acceleration-dependent system with noncommuting coordinates, proposed by Lukierski, Stichel and Zakrzewski [Ann. Phys. 260, 224 (1997)] is derived as the non-relativistic limit of Mathisson's classical electron [Acta Physica Polonica 6, 218 (1937)], further discussed by Weyssenhoff and Raabe [Acta Physica Polonica 9, 7 (1947)]. The two-parameter centrally extended Galilean symmetry of the model is recoved using elementary methods. The relation to Schrödinger's Zitternde Elektron is indicated.
When the interaction potential is suitably reordered, the Moyal field theory admits two types of Galilean symmetries, namely the conventional mass-parameter-centrally-extended one with commuting boosts, but also the two-fold centrally extended ``exotic'' Galilean symmetry, where the commutator of the boosts yields the noncommutative parameter. In the free case, one gets an ``exotic'' two-parameter central extension of the Schroedinger group. The conformal symmetry is, however, broken by the interaction.
Enlarged planar Galilean symmetry, built of both space-time and field variables and also incorporating the ``exotic'' central extension is introduced. It is used to describe non-relativistic anyons coupled to an electromagnetic field. Our theory exhibits an anomalous velocity relation of the type used to explain the Anomalous Hall Effect. The Hall motions, characterized by a Casimir of the enlarged algebra, become mandatory for some critical value(s) of the magnetic field. The extension of our scheme yields the semiclassical effective model of the Bloch electron.
A covariant set of linear differential field equations, describing an N=1 supersymmetric anyon system in (2+1)D, is proposed in terms of Wigner's deformation of the bosonic Heisenberg algebra. The non-relativistic ``Jackiw-Nair'' limit extracts the ordinary bosonic and fermionic degrees of freedom from the Heisenberg-Wigner algebra. It yields first-order, non-relativistic wave equations for a spinning particle on the non-commutative plane that admits a Galilean exotic planar N=1 supersymmetry.
We study all the symmetries of the free Schrödinger equation in the non-commutative plane. These symmetry transformations form an infinite-dimensional Weyl algebra that appears naturally from a two-dimensional Heisenberg algebra generated by Galilean boosts and momenta. We apply the nonlinear realizations method for constructing new Galilean conformal mechanics models. Our starting point is the Galilean conformal algebra which is a non-relativistic contraction of its relativistic counterpart. We calculate Maurer-Cartan one-forms, examine various choices of the relevant coset spaces and consider the geometric inverse Higgs-type constraints which reduce the number of the independent coset parameters and, in some cases, provide dynamical equations. The way to obtain massive non-relativistic states from the Poincare algebra is twofold. First, following Inonu and Wigner the Poincare algebra has to be contracted to the Galilean one. Second, the Galilean algebra is to be extended to include the central mass operator. We show that the central extension might be properly encoded in the non-relativistic contraction. In fact, any Inonu-Wigner contraction of one algebra to another, corresponds to an infinite tower of abelian extensions of the latter. The Galilean Conformal Algebra (GCA) arises in taking the non-relativistic limit of the symmetries of a relativistic Conformal Field Theory in any dimensions. It is known to be infinite-dimensional in all spacetime dimensions. In particular, the 2d GCA emerges out of a scaling limit of linear combinations of two copies of the Virasoro algebra. The decomposition of the non-commutative Landau (NCL) system into two uncoupled one-dimensional chiral components, advocated by Alvarez, Gomis, Kamimura and Plyushchay [1], is generalized to nonvanishing electric fields. This allows us to discuss the main properties of the NCL problem including its exotic Newton-Hooke symmetry and its relation to the Hall effect. The "phase transition" when the magnetic field crosses a critical value determined by the non-commutative parameter is studied in detail.
Deformed Special Relativity (DSR) is obtained by imposing a maximal energy to Special Relativity and deforming the Lorentz symmetry (more exactly the Poincaré symmetry) to accommodate this requirement. We compare the non-commutative quantum mechanics (NCQM) on sphere and the discrete part of the spectrum of NCQM on pseudosphere (Lobachevsky plane, or $AdS_2$) in the presence of a constant magnetic field $B$ with planar NCQM. We study strong coupling phenomena in U(1) gauge theory on the non-commutative plane. To do so, we make use of a T-dual description in terms of an $N\to\infty$ limit of U(N) gauge theory on a commutative torus. The magnetic flux on this torus is taken to be $m=N-1$, while the area scales like 1/N, keeping $Λ_{QCD}$ fixed. With a few assumptions, we argue that the speed of high frequency light in pure non-commutative QED is modified in the non-commutative directions by the factor $1 + Λ_{QCD}^4 θ^2$, where $θ$ is the non-commutative parameter. Quantum planes which correspond to all one parameter solutions of QYBE for the two-dimensional case of GL-groups are summarized and their geometrical interpretations are given. We find a one-parameter family of Lagrangian descriptions for classical general relativity in terms of tetrads which are not c-numbers. Rather, they obey exotic commutation relations. These noncommutative properties drop out in the metric sector of the theory, where the Christoffel symbols and the Riemann tensor are ordinary commuting objects and they are given by the usual expression in terms of the metric tensor. Lorentz-invariant non-commutative QED (NCQED) is constructed such that it should be a part of Lorentz-invariant non-commutative standard model (NCSM), a subject to be treated in later publications. Over the last two decades, many unexpected relations between exotic smoothness, e.g. exotic $\mathbb{R}^{4}$, and quantum field theory were found. Some of these relations are rooted in a relation to superstring theory and quantum gravity. Therefore one would expect that exotic smoothness is directly related to the quantization of general relativity. We study certain aspects of noncommutativity in field theory, strings and membranes. We analyse the dynamics of an open membrane whose boundary is attached to p-branes. Noncommutative features of the boundary string coordinates are revealed by algebraic consistency arguments. Next, we derive Seiberg-Witten-type maps relating currents and their divergences in nonabelian U(N) noncommutative gauge theory with the corresponding expressions in the ordinary (commutative) description.
