We study the relationship between charge density (ρ) and chemical potential (μ) for an array of Lorentz invariant 3 + 1 dimensional holographic field theories with the minimal structure of a conserved charge. The systems considered include Dp-Dq probe brane constructions and probe and backreacted 'bottom-up' models with gauge and scalar fields. In all cases, at large density, the relationship is well modelled by a power law behaviour of the form ρ $\propto$ μ^α. A variety of powers α are found in the brane systems while in most of the bottom-up models α is determined by the underlying conformal symmetry. Further, it is demonstrated that basic thermodynamical and causality constraints demand α \geq 1, a condition that was realized in each system considered.
We consider a model of a holographic braneworld universe in which a cosmological fluid occupies a 3+1 dimensional brane located at the boundary of the asymptotic AdS$_5$ bulk. We combine the AdS/CFT correspondence and the second Randall-Sundrum (RSII) model to establish a relationship between the RSII braneworld cosmology and the boundary metric induced by the time dependent bulk geometry. In the framework of the Friedmann Robertson Walker cosmology we discuss some physically interesting scenarios involving the RSII and holographic braneworlds.
We study striped phases in holographic insulator/superconductor transition by considering a spatially modulated chemical potential in AdS soliton background. Generally striped phases can develop above a critical chemical potential. When the constant leading term in the chemical potential is set to zero, a discontinuity in the plot of charge density versus chemical potential is observed in the limit of large wave vector. We explain this discontinuity using an analytical approach. When the constant leading term in the chemical potential is present, the critical chemical potential is larger than …
We study transport coefficients of strongly coupled gauge theory in the presence of multiple chemical potential which are dual to rotating D3, M2 and M5 brane. Using the general form of the perturbation equations, we compute DC-electrical conductivity at finite temperature as well as at zero temperature. We also study thermal conductivity for the same class of black holes and show that thermal conductivity and viscosity obeys Wiedemann-Franz like law even in the presence of multiple chemical potential.
We discuss the Sakai-Sugimoto model at finite temperature and finite chemical potential. It is a holographic model of large N_c QCD with N_f massless quarks based on a D4/D8-\bar{D8} brane system. The near horizon limit of the D4-branes and the probe approximation of the D8-\bar{D8} pairs allow us to treat the D4-branes as a gravitational background and the D8-\bar{D8} pairs as a probe which does not affect the background. We propose that the asymptotic value of a U(1) gauge field on the D8-\bar{D8}-branes is identified with the chemical potential for the baryon number. Using this chemical pot…
Over the last few years a certain class of dark-energy models decaying inversely proportional to the square of the horizon distance emerged on the basis either of Heisenberg uncertainty relations or of the uncertainty relation between the four-volume and the cosmological constant. The very nature of these dark energies is understood to be the same, namely it is the energy of background space/metric fluctuations. Putting together these uncertainty relations one finds that the model of random fluctuations of the background metric is favored over the holographic one.
We consider five-dimensional gravity coupled to a negative cosmological constant and a single U(1) gauge field, including a general set of four-derivative interactions. In this framework, we construct charged planar AdS black hole solutions perturbatively and consider the thermal and hydrodynamic properties of the plasma in the dual CFT. In particular, we calculate the ratio of shear viscosity to entropy density and argue that the violation of the KSS bound is enhanced in the presence of a chemical potential. We also compute the electrical conductivity and comment on various conjectured bounds…
We construct a gravity dual of a boost-invariant flow of an N=4 SU(N) supersymmetric Yang-Mills gauge theory plasma with chemical potential. We present both a first-order corrected late-time solution in Eddington-Finkelstein coordinates and a zeroth-order solution in parametric form in Fefferman-Graham coordinates. The resulting background takes the form of a time-dependent AdS Reissner-Nordstroem-type black hole whose horizons move into the bulk of the AdS space. The solution correctly reproduces the energy and charge density as well as the viscosity of the plasma previously computed in the l…
Recently holographic techniques have been used to study the thermal properties of N=2 super-Yang-Mills theory, with gauge group SU(Nc) and coupled to Nf << Nc flavours of fundamental matter, at large Nc and large 't Hooft coupling. Here we consider the phase diagram as a function of temperature and baryon chemical potential mu. For fixed mu < Nc Mq there is a line of first order thermal phase transitions separating a region with vanishing baryon density and one with nonzero density. For fixed mu > Nc Mq there is no phase transition as a function of the temperature and the baryon density is alw…
We study the dense nuclear matter within the holographic Sakai-Sugimoto model. The nuclear matter is described via instantons in bulk, whose size has the new temperature dependency. Then, properties of nuclear matter have been studied for different temperatures. For example, free energy and baryon density are examined for different temperature values. Also, nuclear matter properties, like the speed of sound and connection of nuclear matter and quark matter, are discussed. As we have increased the temperature, the phase transition value has been changed from baryon to quark, which is non-physic…
We extend a bottom up holographic model, which has been used in studying the color superconductivity in QCD, to the imaginary chemical potential ($μ_I$) region, and the phase diagram is studied on the $μ_I$-temperature (T) plane. The analysis is performed for the case of the probe approximation and for the background where the back reaction from the flavor fermions are taken into account. For both cases, we could find the expected Roberge-Weiss (RW) transitions. In the case of the back-reacted solution, a bound of the color number $N_c$ is found to produce the RW periodicity. It is given as $N…
Recent Holographic studies have shown that N=4 super Yang-Mills theory coupled to fundamental matter with finite chemical potential undergoes a first order phase transition. In this paper, we study Nf D6 probe branes with or without electric field on it in the black D4 brane background compactified on a circle with supersymmetry breaking boundary condition. At energy scales much lower than the compactification scale, the dual gauge theory is effectively four dimensional non-supersymmetric SU(Nc) Yang-Mills theory coupled to fundamental matter with or without baryon number charge. Within the su…
In this work we study the relaxation of the system of strongly correlated electrons, at charge neutrality, when the chemical potential undergoes a local change. This setup is a model for for the X-ray absorbtion edge study in the half-filled graphene. We use holographic duality to describe the system as a classical Schwarzschild black hole in curved 4-dimensional AdS spacetime. Assuming the amplitude of the quench is small, we neglect the backreaction on the geometry. We numerically study the two relaxation regimes: the adiabatic relaxation when the quench is slow and the relaxation governed b…
We numerically construct a family of five-dimensional black holes exhibiting a line of first-order phase transitions terminating at a critical point at finite chemical potential and temperature. These black holes are constructed so that the equation of state and baryon susceptibilities approximately match QCD lattice data at vanishing chemical potential. The critical endpoint in the particular model we consider has temperature 143 MeV and chemical potential 783 MeV. Critical exponents are calculated, with results that are consistent with mean-field scaling relations.
N=2 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory with flavor hypermultiplets at finite temperature and in the dS${}_4$ are studied for finite quark number density ($n_b$) by a dual supergravity background with non-trivial dilaton and axion. The quarks and its number density $n_b$ are introduced by embedding a probe D7 brane. We find a critical value of the chemical potential at the limit of $n_b=0$, and it coincides with the effective quark mass given in each theory for $n_b=0$. At this point, a transition of the D7 embedding configurations occurs between their two typical ones. The phase diagrams of this…
An holographic f(R) gravity model of dark energy is proposed. The correspondence between the f(R) geometrical effective energy density with the holographic density, allows the reconstruction of the f(R) gravity in flat FRW background in the Einstein frame. The proposed infrared cut-off for the holographic energy density depends on two parameters which are fit using the luminosity versus redshift data, allowing a suitable reconstruction in two representative cases of the EoS parameter: for $ω>-1$ and $ω<-1$.
We investigate the analytical properties of the s-wave and p-wave holographic insulator/superconductor phase transitions at zero temperature. In the probe limit, we analytically calculate the critical chemical potentials at which the insulator/superconductor phase transition occurs. Those resulting analytical values perfectly match the previous numerical values. We also study the relations between the condensation values and the chemical potentials near the critical point. We find that the critical exponent for condensation operator is 1/2 for both models. The linear relations between the char…
We consider configurations of D4-D8-\bar D8 branes which correspond to large N QCD with non-vanishing temperature and chemical potential for baryon number and isospin. We study the holographic dual of this model and find a rich phase structure. The phases, distinguished by the values of quark condensates, are separated by the surfaces of first order phase transitions. The picture is in many respects similar to the expected phase structure of QCD in the chiral limit.
We calculate the one-point function of certain chiral operators, known as open Wilson lines, in the holographic Nambu-Jona-Lasinio (NJL) model at finite temperature as well as finite chemical potential for quark (baryon) number density. These operators are holographically dual to Euclidean string worldsheets bounded by the flavor branes. Their one-point functions can serve as order parameters for chiral symmetry breaking in these models. Analyzing the behavior of the dual string worldsheets with respect to temperature and chemical potential (or quark density) enables us to determine how the or…
We consider a holographic model constructed from the intersecting brane configuration D4-$\bar{\rm{D4}}$/D4 in noncritical string theory. We study the chiral phase diagram of this holographic QCD-like model with a finite baryon chemical potential through the supergravity dual approximation.
We investigate in detail the m^{2}=0 Abelian Higgs model in AdS4, which is considered as the holographic dual of the most BCS-like superfluid. In homogeneous and isotropic superfluid solutions, we calculate the sound speeds, square of which approaches to 1/2 with increasing chemical potential (lowering temperature). Then we present the single dark soliton solutions, which becomes thinner with increasing chemical potential. For the first time, we also find the interesting double and triple dark soliton solutions, which is unexpected and shows the possibility of more complicated static configura…
We investigate the properties of the Sakai-Sugimoto model at finite magnetic field and baryon chemical potentials. We show that in a finite magnetic field, there exists a spatially homogeneous configuration carrying finite baryon number density. At low magnetic field and baryon chemical potential the equation of state of the matter coincides with that obtained from the chiral perturbation theory Lagrangian with an anomalous term. We discuss the behavior of the system at larger magnetic fields.
In this article we probe the proposed holographic duality between $T\bar{T}$ deformed two dimensional conformal field theory and the gravity theory of $\rm AdS_3$ with a Dirichlet cutoff by computing correlators of energy-momentum tensor. We focus on the large central charge sector of the $T\bar{T}$ CFT in a Euclidean plane and in a sphere, and compute the correlators of energy-momentum tensor using an operator identity promoted from the classical trace relation. The result agrees with a computation of classical pure gravity in $\rm AdS_3$ with the corresponding cutoff surface, given a hologra…
We analyse the effect of velocity and acceleration on the temperature felt by particles and strings in backgrounds relevant in holographic models. First, we compare accelerated strings and strings at finite temperature. We find that for fixed Unruh temperature felt by the string endpoints, the screening length is smaller for the accelerated Wilson loop than for the static one in a thermal background of the same temperature; hence acceleration provides a "more efficient" mechanism for melting of mesons. Secondly, we show that the velocity-dependence of the screening length of the colour force, …
We explore the properties of the holographic fermions in extremal $R$-charged black hole background with a running chemical potential, as well as the dipole coupling between fermions and the gauge field in the bulk. We find that although the running chemical potential effect the location of the Fermi surface, it does not change the type of fermions. We also study the onset of the Fermi gap and the gap effected by running chemical potential and the dipole coupling. The spectral function in the limit $ω\rightarrow0$ and the existence of the Fermi liquid are also investigated. The running chemica…
We analyze the charge diffusion and conductivity in a Dp/Dq holographic setup that is dual to a supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory in p+1 dimensions with N_f<< N_c flavour degrees of freedom at finite temperature and nonvanishing U(1) baryon number chemical potential. We provide a new derivation of the results that generalize the membrane paradigm to the present context. We perform a numerical analysis in the particular case of the D3/D7 flavor system. The results obtained support the validity of the Einstein relation at finite chemical potential.
We review the Sakai-Sugimoto model of holographic QCD at zero temperature and finite chemical potential, comparing the results to those expected at large-$N_c$ QCD, and those in a closely related holographic model. We find that as the baryon chemical potential is increased above a critical value, there is a phase transition to a nuclear matter phase, the details of which depend on the model. We argue that the nuclear matter phase is necessarily inhomogeneous to arbitrarily high density, which suggests an explanation of the "chiral density wave" instability of the quark Fermi surface in large-$…
A computation of the quotient of shear viscosity to entropy density, or KSS number $η/s$ is performed, in the non-relativistic and classical regime, first in Chiral Perturbation Theory, and then in the $SO(g+1)/SO(g)$ Non-Linear Sigma Model in the large $g$ limit. Both are field theories stemming from a renormalizable Sigma Model but in spite of that, we explicitly calculate how one undercomes the KSS bound by increasing the number of degenerate pions sufficiently. However we argue that particle production could still keep the validity of the KSS bound in the weak sense. We also show how a lar…
We study the entanglement entropy between a strip region with width $2R$ and its complement in strongly coupled large-$N$ conformal field theory (CFT) on $\mathbb{R}^{1,n}$ with chemical potential and angular momentum in an thermal equilibrium state, which dual to the cylindrical Kerr-Newman black hole. Using Ryu-Takanayagi conjecture, we are able to explore the entanglement entropy through calculating the area of the extremal surface which is anchored on the entangled surface. Because we consider the rotating charged black hole for the gravitational dual, the entropy can be characterized by t…
In this work, we have analytically devised novel vortex solutions in a rotating holographic superfluid. To achieve this result, we have considered a static disc at the AdS boundary and let the superfluid rotate relative to it. This idea has been numerically exploited in [1] where formation of vortices in such a setting was reported. We have found that these vortex solutions are eigenfunctions of angular momentum. We have also shown that vortices with higher winding numbers are associated with higher quantized rotation of the superfluid. We have, then, analysed the equation of motion along bulk…
We study the quark number susceptibility in holographic QCD with a finite chemical potential or under an external magnetic field at finite temperature. We first consider the quark number susceptibility with the chemical potential. We observe that approaching the critical temperature from high temperature regime, the quark number susceptibility divided by temperature square develops a peak as we increase the chemical potential, which confirms recent lattice QCD results. We discuss this behavior in connection with the existence of the critical end point in the QCD phase diagram. We also consider…
We investigate the phase diagram of QCD-like gauge theories at strong coupling at finite magnetic field $B$, temperature $T$ and baryon chemical potential $μ$ using the improved holographic QCD model including the full backreaction of the quarks in the plasma. In addition to the phase diagram we study the behavior of the quark condensate as a function of $T$, $B$ and $μ$ and discuss the fate of (inverse) magnetic catalysis at finite $μ$. In particular we observe that inverse magnetic catalysis exists only for small values of the baryon chemical potential. The speed of sound in this holographic…
Holographic thermalization is studied in the framework of Einstein-Maxwell-Gauss-Bonnet gravity. We use the two-point correlation function and expectation value of Wilson loop, which are dual to the renormalized geodesic length and minimal area surface in the bulk, to probe the thermalization. The numeric result shows that larger the Gauss-Bonnet coefficient is, shorter the thermalization time is, and larger the charge is, longer the thermalization time is, which implies that the Gauss-Bonnet coefficient can accelerate the thermalization while the charge has an opposite effect. In addition, we…
In this work, we have analytically investigated the insulator/superconductor phase transition in the presence of $d$-dimensional Gauss-Bonnet AdS soliton background. Using the Sturm-Liouville eigenvalue method, we have calculated the value of the critical chemical potential $μ_c$ in any arbitrary dimension $d\geq 5$. We have then studied the condensation operator values and charge density in terms of the chemical potential and discussed the $d=5, 6, 7$ cases using our general results in $d$ dimensions. Our analytical results agree very well with the numerically findings in the literature.
A profound quantum-gravitational effect of space-time dimension running with respect to the size of space-time region has been discovered a few years ago through the numerical simulations of lattice quantum gravity in the framework of causal dynamical triangulation [hep-th/0505113] as well as in renormalization group approach to quantum gravity [hep-th/0508202]. Unfortunately, along these approaches the interpretation and the physical meaning of the effective change of dimension at shorter scales is not clear. The aim of this paper is twofold. First, we find that box-counting dimension in face…
Recently, it has been suggested that large-Nc orbifold equivalences may be applicable to certain theories with chemical potentials, including QCD, in certain portions of their phase diagram. When valid, such an equivalence offers the possibility of relating large-Nc QCD at non-zero baryon chemical potential, a theory with a complex fermion determinant, to a related theory whose fermion determinant is real and positive. In this paper, we provide a test of this large Nc equivalence using a holographic realization of a supersymmetric theory with baryon chemical potential and a related theory with…
Gravitational collapse of a shell of charged dust surrounded by the phantom dark energy is probed by the minimal area surface, which is dual to probe the thermalization in the boundary quantum field by expectation values of Wilson loop in the framework of the AdS/CFT correspondence. We investigated mainly the effect of the phantom dark energy parameter and chemical potential on the thermalization. The result shows that the smaller the phantom dark energy parameter is, the easier the plasma thermalizes as the chemical potential is fixed, and the larger the chemical potential is, the harder the …
We explore the phase structure for defect theories in full generality using the gauge/gravity correspondence. On the gravity side, the systems are constructed by introducing M (probe) D(p+4-2k)-branes in a background generated by N Dp-branes to obtain a codimension-k intersection. The dual gauge theory is a U(N) Supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory on a (1+p-k)-dimensional defect with both adjoint and fundamental degrees of freedom. We focus on the phase structure in the chemical potential versus temperature plane. We observe the existence of two universality classes for holographic gauge theories…
We have considered D2-D8 model and obtain a numerical solution that exhibits spatially modulated phases corresponding to a charge density wave and a spin density wave. We have analysed behavior of the free energy density for different values of the chemical potential and the magnetic field.
In this paper, based on the notion of Gauge/Gravity duality, we explore the laws of entanglement thermodynamics for most generic classes of Quantum Field Theories with hyperscaling violation. In our analysis, we note that for Quantum Field Theories with compressible \textit{quark} like excitation, the first law of entanglement thermodynamics gets modified due to the presence of an additional term that could be identified as the entanglement chemical potential associated with \textit{hidden} Fermi surfaces of the boundary theory. Most notably, we find that the so called entanglement chemical po…
The gravitational dual of an insulator/superconductor transition driven by increasing the chemical potential has recently been constructed. However, the system was studied in a probe limit and only a part of the phase diagram was obtained. We include the backreaction and construct the complete phase diagram for this system. For fixed chemical potential there are typically two phase transitions as the temperature is lowered. Surprisingly, for a certain range of parameters, the system first becomes a superconductor and then becomes an insulator as the temperature approaches zero. As a byproduct …
We investigate jet quenching of virtual gluons and thermalization of a strongly-coupled plasma with a non-zero chemical potential via the gauge/gravity duality. By tracking a charged shell falling in an asymptotic AdS$_{d+1}$ background for $d=3$ and $d=4$, which is characterized by the AdS-Reissner-Nordström-Vaidya (AdS-RN-Vaidya) geometry, we extract a thermalization time of the medium with a non-zero chemical potential. In addition, we study the falling string as the holographic dual of a virtual gluon in the AdS-RN-Vaidya spacetime. The stopping distance of the massless particle representi…
Motivated by recent studies of deep inelastic scattering (DIS) off the $\mathcal{N}=4$ super-Yang-Mills (SYM) plasma, holographically dual to $AdS_5\times S^5$ black hole, we in this note use the spacelike flavor current to probe the internal structure of one holographic quark-gluon plasma, which is described by the Sakai-Sugimoto model at high temperature phase (i.e., the chiral symmetric phase). The plasma structure function is extracted from the retarded flavor current-current correlator. Our main aim here is to explore the effect of non-conformality on these physical quantities. As usual, …
We calculate holographically one and two-point functions of scalar operators at finite density and/or finite temperature. In the case of finite density and zero temperature we argue that only scalar operators can have non-zero VEVs. In the case in which both the chemical potential and the temperature are finite, we present a systematic expansion of the two-point correlators in powers of the temperature T and the chemical potential $Ω$. The holographic result is in agreement with the general form of the OPE which dictates that the two-point function may be written as a linear combination of the…
We investigate the effect of a magnetic field on the vacuum of low-temperature QCD at large-N_c in the presence of a chiral chemical potential, using the holographic Sakai-Sugimoto model. Above some critical chemical potential we find an instability, which triggers a decay of the homogeneous vacuum to a non-homogeneous configuration with a spiral form, which we construct explicitly. We find that this decay is suppressed for sufficiently large magnetic field, and determine the critical strength. We find that the new vacuum does not exhibit the chiral magnetic effect. This is related to the way …
We study bosonisation in the massive Thirring and sine-Gordon models at finite temperature and nonzero fermion chemical potential. Both canonical operator and path integral approaches are used to prove the equality of the partition functions of the two models at finite $T$ and zero chemical potential, as it has been recently shown. This enables the relationship between thermal normal ordering and path-integral renormalisation to be specified. Furthermore, we prove that thermal averages of zero-charge operators can also be identified. At nonzero chemical potential and temperature we show, in pe…
We consider the noncommutative deformation of the Sakai--Sugimoto model at finite temperature and finite baryon chemical potential. The space noncommutativity is possible to have an influence on the flavor dynamics of the QCD. The critical temperature and critical value of the chemical potential are modified by the space noncommutativity. The influence of the space noncommutativity on the flavor dynamics of the QCD is caused by the Wess--Zumino term in the effective action of the D8-branes. The intermediate temperature phase, in which the gluons deconfine but the chiral symmetry remains broken…
We derive the leading dissipative corrections of holographic superfluids at finite temperature and chemical potential by employing our recently developed techniques to study dissipative effects in the hydrodynamic limit of holographic theories. As part of our results, we express the incoherent conductivity, the shear and the three bulk viscosities in terms of thermodynamics and the black hole horizon data of the dual bulk geometries. We use our results to show that all three bulk viscosities exhibit singular behaviour close to the critical point.
Entanglement entropy in conformal field theories is known to satisfy a first law. For spherical entangling surfaces, this has been shown to follow via the AdS/CFT correspondence and the holographic prescription for entanglement entropy from the bulk first law for Killing horizons. The bulk first law can be extended to include variations in the cosmological constant $Λ$, which we established in earlier work. Here we show that this implies an extension of the boundary first law to include varying the number of degrees of freedom of the boundary CFT. The thermodynamic potential conjugate to $Λ$ i…
This is a contribution for the Proceedings of the Conference Hot Quarks 2016, held at South Padre Island, Texas, USA, 12-17 September 2016. I briefly review some thermodynamic and baryon transport results obtained from a bottom-up Einstein-Maxwell-Dilaton holographic model engineered to describe the physics of the quark-gluon plasma at finite temperature and baryon density. The results for the equation of state, baryon susceptibilities, and the curvature of the crossover band are in quantitative agreement with the corresponding lattice QCD results with $2+1$ flavors and physical quark masses. …
We study the thermalization of a strongly coupled quantum field theory in the presence of a chemical potential. More precisely, using the holographic prescription, we calculate non- local operators such as two point function, Wilson loop and entanglement entropy in a time- dependent background that interpolates between AdSd+1 and AdSd+1 -Reissner-Nordström for d = 3, 4. We find that it is the entanglement entropy that thermalizes the latest and thus sets a time-scale for equilibration in the field theory. We study the dependence of the thermalization time on the probe length and the chemical p…
We investigate the Sakai-Sugimoto model at nonzero baryon chemical potential in a background magnetic field both in the confined phase and in the deconfined phase with restored chiral symmetry. In this case the 8-brane Chern-Simons term becomes important. In the confined phase it generates a gradient of the pseudo-scalar "pion", which carries a non-vanishing baryon charge. Above a critical value of the chemical potential there is a second order phase transition to a mixed phase which includes also ordinary baryonic matter. However, at fixed baryon charge density the matter is purely "pion"-gra…
We construct dark soliton solutions in a holographic model of a relativistic superfluid. We study the length scales associated with the condensate and the charge density depletion, and find that the two scales differ by a non-trivial function of the chemical potential. By adjusting the chemical potential, we study the variation of the depletion of charge density at the interface.
