We explore the complexity equals volume proposal for planar black holes in anti-de Sitter (AdS) spacetime in 2+1 dimensions, with an end of the world (ETW) brane behind the horizon. We allow for the possibility of intrinsic gravitational dynamics in the form of Jackiw-Teitelboim (JT) gravity to be localized on the brane. We compute the asymptotic rate of change of volume complexity analytically and obtain the full time dependence using numerical techniques. We find that the inclusion of JT gravity on the brane leads to interesting effects on time dependence of holographic complexity. We identify the region in parameter space (the brane location and the JT coupling) for which the rate of change of complexity violates the Lloyd bound. In an equivalent description of the model in terms of an asymptotically AdS wormhole, we connect the violation of the Lloyd bound to the violation of a suitable energy condition in the bulk that we introduce. We also compare the Lloyd bound constraints to previously derived constraints on the bulk parameters in this model that are based on bounds on entanglement growth in the dual CFT state.
A mapping between two braneworld cosmologies -- Randall-Sundrum and holographic -- is explicitly constructed. The cosmologies are governed by the appropriate modified Friedman equations. A relationship between the corresponding Hubble rates is established.
We examine the deSitter entropy in the braneworld model with the Gauss-Bonnet/Lovelock terms. Then, we can see that the deSitter entropy computed through the Euclidean action exactly coincides with the holographic entanglement entropy.
We study heavy-quark potential in an inflationary braneworld scenario. The scenario we consider is an (Euclidean) inflating braneworld $AdS_4$ embedded in a static Euclidean $AdS_5$. Using gauge/gravity duality we obtain a confining phase depending on the ratio between the Hubble parameter $H$ in the braneworld and the brane tension $σ$.
We study the structure of the higher-curvature gravitational densities that are induced from holographic renormalization in AdS$_{d+1}$. In a braneworld construction, such densities define a d-dimensional higher-curvature gravitational theory on the brane, which in turn is dual to a (d-1)-dimensional CFT living at its boundary. We show that this CFT$_{d-1}$ satisfies a holographic c-theorem in general dimensions (different than the g-theorem of holographic boundary CFTs), since at each and every order the higher-curvature densities satisfy c-theorems on their own. We find that, in these densit…
We apply bulk holographic dark energy in general braneworld models with a Gauss-Bonnet term in the bulk and an induced gravity term and a perfect fluid on the brane. Without making any additional assumptions we extract the Friedmann equation on the physical brane and we show that a $ρ$-$ρ_Λ$ coupling arises naturally by the full 5D dynamics. The low-energy (late-time) evolution reveals that the effective 4D holographic dark energy behaves as ``quintom'', that is it crosses the phantom divide $w=-1$ during the evolution. In particular, the Gauss-Bonnet contribution decreases the present value o…
In this paper, we use Born-Infeld black holes to test two recent holographic conjectures of complexity, the "Complexity = Action" (CA) duality and "Complexity = Volume 2.0" (CV) duality. The complexity of a boundary state is identified with the action of the Wheeler-deWitt patch in CA duality, while this complexity is identified with the spacetime volume of the WdW patch in CV duality. In particular, we check whether the Born-Infeld black holes violate the Lloyd bound: $\mathcal{\dot{C}\leq}\frac{2}{π\hbar}\left[ \left( M-QΦ\right) -\left( M-QΦ\right) _{\text{gs}}\right] $, where gs stands for…
In a holographic braneworld universe a cosmological fluid occupies a 3+1 dimensional brane located at the boundary of the asymptotic AdS$_5$ bulk. The AdS/CFT correspondence and the second Randall-Sundrum model are combined to establish a relationship between the RSII braneworld cosmology and the boundary metric induced by the time dependent bulk geometry. Some physically interesting scenarios are discussed in the framework of the Friedmann Robertson Walker cosmology involving the RSII and holographic braneworlds.
Recently, S. Antonini and B. Swingle builded a holographic model for braneworld cosmology by introducing an ``end-of-the-world" (ETW) brane moving in a charged black hole spactime. In this paper, we will show that a holographic description of braneworld cosmology is possible for a general black hole spacetime with a pure tension brane if one implements a mixed boundary condition on the ETW brane. As a simple example, we study AdS-Schwarzschild black holes and show that a sensible Euclidean braneworld solution is compatible with localization of gravity on the ETW brane.
We consider a model of a holographic braneworld universe in which a cosmological fluid occupies a 3+1 dimensional brane located at the boundary of the asymptotic AdS$_5$ bulk. We combine the AdS/CFT correspondence and the second Randall-Sundrum (RSII) model to establish a relationship between the RSII braneworld cosmology and the boundary metric induced by the time dependent bulk geometry. In the framework of the Friedmann Robertson Walker cosmology we discuss some physically interesting scenarios involving the RSII and holographic braneworlds.
We study the holographic representation of the entanglement entropy, recently proposed by Ryu and Takayanagi, in a braneworld context. The holographic entanglement entropy of a de Sitter brane embedded in an anti-de Sitter (AdS) spacetime is evaluated using geometric quantities, and it is compared with two kinds of de Sitter entropy: a quarter of the area of the cosmological horizon on the brane and entropy calculated from the Euclidean path integral. We show that the three entropies coincide with each other in a certain limit. Remarkably, the entropy obtained from the Euclidean path integral …
Many dark energy (DE) models have been proposed, in recent years, to explain acceleration of the Universe expansion. It seems necessary to discriminate the various DE models in order to check the viability of each model. Statefinder diagnostic is a useful method which can differentiate various DE models. In this paper, we investigate the statefinder diagnosis parameters for the holographic dark energy (HDE) model in two cosmological setup. First, we study statefinder diagnosis for HDE in the context of flat Friedmann-Robertson-Walker (FRW) Universe in Einstein gravity. Then, we extend our stud…
In the context of CA conjecture for holographic complexity, we study the action growth rate at late time approximation for general quadratic curvature theory of gravity. We show how the Lloyd's bound saturates for charged and neutral black hole solutions. We observe that a second singular point may modify the action growth rate to a value other than the Lloyd's bound. Moreover, we find the universal terms that appear in the divergent part of complexity from computing the bulk and joint terms on a regulated WDW patch.
A model of tachyon inflation is proposed in the framework of holographic cosmology. The model is based on a holographic braneworld scenario with a D3-brane located at the holographic boundary of an asymptotic ADS$_5$ bulk. The tachyon field that drives inflation is represented by a DBI action on the brane. We solve the evolution equations analytically in the slow-roll regime and solve the exact equations numerically. We calculate the inflation parameters and compare the results with Planck 2018 data.
We consider the holographic dark energy (HDE) model in the framework of DGP braneworld with Granda-Oliveros infrared (IR) cutoff, $L=(α\dot{H}+βH^2)^{-1/2}$. With this choice for IR cutoff, we are able to derive evolution of the cosmological parameters such as the equation of state and the deceleration parameters, $w$ and $q$, as the functions of the redshift parameter $z$. As far as we know, most previous models of HDE presented in the literatures, do not gives analytically $ω=ω(z)$ and $q=q(z)$. We plot the evolution of these parameters versus $z$ and discuss that the results are compatible …
This work investigates the influence of a probe string on the complexity of braneworld according to the CA (Complexity equals action) conjecture within the Horndeski gravity. In the current study, it is considered that scalar fields that source Horndeski gravity has a spatial dependence. In addition, our system contains a particle moving on the boundary, which corresponds to the insertion of a fundamental string in the higher dimensional bulk. Such an effect is given by the Nambu-Goto term, which also incorporates the time-dependence and evolution in our system. Both warp factor, scalar field,…
Based on reasonable assumptions, we propose a new expression for Lloyd's bound, which confines the complexity growth of charged black holes. We then revisit holographic complexity for charged black branes in the presence of a finite cutoff. Using the proposed Lloyd's bound we find a relation between the UV and the behind the horizon cutoff. This is found to be consistent with the factorization of the partition function at leading order in large N. We argue that the result may be thought of as a holographic realization of strong cosmic censorship.
We determine the effect on the computational complexity of a conformal anomaly using the Complexity=Action prescription of the gauge/gravity correspondence. To allow the involvement of said anomaly, we extend previous studies to include arbitrary values for the anisotropic parameter and the magnetic field respectively on the Mateos-Trancanelli and the D'Hoker-Kraus holographic models. Our main result is that the rate of change of the computational complexity is independent of the conformal anomaly in both cases. In addition, this allows us to also show that, if so desired, the saturation of Ll…
Based on the context of complexity = action (CA) conjecture, we calculate the holographic complexity of AdS black holes with planar and spherical topologies in Horndeski theory. We find that the rate of change of holographic complexity for neutral AdS black holes saturates the Lloyd's bound. For charged black holes, we find that there exists only one horizon and thus the corresponding holographic complexity can't be expressed as the difference of some thermodynamical potential between two horizons as that of Reissner-Nordstrom AdS black hole in Einstein-Maxwell theory. However, the Lloyd's bou…
We study the time evolution of entanglement entropy in expanding universes with various matters. To describe expanding universes holographically, we take into account a braneworld moving in an asymptotic AdS space involving a uniform $p$-brane gas. In the braneworld model, an observer living in the braneworld detects the bulk motion of the braneworld as an expanding universe. We show that the entanglement entropy of expanding universes increases by the volume law in the early time and by the area law in the late time. We further consider the cosmological horizon, which is the border of the vis…
In the holographic Ricci dark energy (RDE) model, the parameter $α$ plays an important role in determining the evolutionary behavior of the dark energy. When $α<1/2$, the RDE will exhibit a quintom feature, i.e., the equation of state of dark energy will evolve across the cosmological constant boundary $w=-1$. Observations show that the parameter $α$ is indeed smaller than 1/2, so the late-time evolution of RDE will be really like a phantom energy. Therefore, it seems that the big rip is inevitable in this model. On the other hand, the big rip is actually inconsistent with the theoretical fram…
We investigate a model of brane cosmology to find a unified description of the radiation-matter-dark energy universe. It is of the interacting holographic dark energy with a bulk-holographic matter $χ$. This is a five-dimensional cold dark matter, which plays a role of radiation on the brane. Using the effective equations of state $ω^{\rm eff}_{\rm Λ}$ instead of the native equations of state $ω_{\rm Λ}$, we show that this model cannot accommodate any transition from the dark energy with $ω^{\rm eff}_{\rm Λ}\ge-1$ to the phantom regime $ω^{\rm eff}_{\rm Λ}<-1$. Furthermore, the case of interac…
Recently it was proposed that microscopic models of braneworld cosmology could be realized in the context of AdS/CFT using black hole microstates containing an end-of-the-world brane. Motivated by a desire to establish the microscopic existence of such microstates, which so far have been discussed primarily in bottom-up models, we have studied similar microstates in a simpler version of AdS/CFT. On one side, we define and study boundary states in the charged Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev model and show that these states typically look thermal with a certain pattern of symmetry breaking. On the other side,…
We investigate general features of the evolution of holographic subregion complexity (HSC) on Vaidya-AdS metric with a general form. The spacetime is dual to a sudden quench process in quantum system and HSC is a measure of the ``difference'' between two mixed states. Based on the subregion CV (Complexity equals Volume) conjecture and in the large size limit, we extract out three distinct stages during the evolution of HSC: the stage of linear growth at the early time, the stage of linear growth with a slightly small rate during the intermediate time and the stage of linear decrease at the lat…
We apply the bulk holographic dark energy in general 5D two-brane models. We extract the Friedmann equation on the physical brane and we show that in the general moving-brane case the effective 4D holographic dark energy behaves as a quintom for a large parameter-space area of a simple solution subclass. We find that $w_Λ$ was larger than -1 in the past while its present value is $w_{Λ_0}\approx-1.05$, and the phantom bound $w_Λ=-1$ was crossed at $z_{p}\approx0.41$, a result in agreement with observations. Such a behavior arises naturally, without the inclusion of special fields or potential …
After a brief introduction to the AdS/CFT holography a tachyon inflation will be discussed in the framework of holographic cosmology. The model is based on a holographic braneworld scenario with an effective tachyon field on a D3-brane located at the holographic bound of an asymptotic ADS$_5$ bulk.
In this note we investigate the role of Lloyd's computational bound in holographic complexity. Our goal is to translate the assumptions behind Lloyd's proof into the bulk language. In particular, we discuss the distinction between orthogonalizing and `simple' gates and argue that these notions are useful for diagnosing holographic complexity. We show that large black holes constructed from series circuits necessarily employ simple gates, and thus do not satisfy Lloyd's assumptions. We also estimate the degree of parallel processing required in this case for elementary gates to orthogonalize. F…
Within the framework of the "complexity equals action" and "complexity equals volume" conjectures, we study the properties of holographic complexity for rotating black holes. We focus on a class of odd-dimensional equal-spinning black holes for which considerable simplification occurs. We study the complexity of formation, uncovering a direct connection between complexity of formation and thermodynamic volume for large black holes. We consider also the growth-rate of complexity, finding that at late-times the rate of growth approaches a constant, but that Lloyd's bound is generically violated.
We obtain the reflected entropy for bipartite mixed state configurations of two adjacent and disjoint subsystems at a finite temperature in finite-sized non-gravitating reservoirs described by $CFT_2$s each coupled to two quantum dots at their boundaries in the large central charge limit through a replica technique. These field theory results are substantiated through a holographic computation involving the entanglement wedge cross section in the dual bulk BTZ black hole geometry truncated by two Planck branes. The two Planck branes are the holographic duals of the quantum dots described by $A…
To understand the time-dependent quantum correlation in expanding universes, we study the time-dependent entanglement entropy in the braneworld model. If we take into account a generalized string cloud geometry caused by uniformly distributed open strings, cosmologies on the braneworld result in the standard Friedmann-Lemaître-Robertson-Walker cosmologies with various matter contents. On the dual field theory side, open strings are reinterpreted as a fundamental matter, while the black hole mass corresponds to the excitation energy of massless gauge bosons. In this work, we show how the string…
Using "complexity=action" proposal we study the late time growth rate of holographic complexity for nonlinear charged Lifshitz black hole with a single horizon or two horizons. As a toy model, we consider two kinds of such black holes: nonlinear charged Lifshitz black hole and nonlinear logarithmic charged Lifshitz black hole. We find that for the black hole with two horizons, the action growth bound is satisfied. But for the black hole with a single horizon, whether the Lloyd bound is violated depends on the specific value of dimensionless coupling constants $β_{1},β_{2}$, spacetime dimension…
In this paper, we investigate the action growth in various backgrounds in Einstein-Maxwell-Dilaton theory. We calculate the full time evolution of action growth in AdS dilaton black hole and find it approaches the late time bound from above. We investigate the black hole which is asymptotically Lifshitz and obtain its late-time and full time behavior. We find the violation of Lloyd bound in late time limit and show the full time behavior exhibiting some new features for z sufficiently large.
In the presence of a scalar hair perturbation, the Cauchy horizon of a Reissner-Nordström black hole disappears and is replaced by the rapid collapse of the Einstein-Rosen bridge, which leads to a Kasner singularity [1,2]. We study the time-dependence of holographic complexity, both for the volume and for the action proposals, in a class of models with hairy black holes. Volume complexity can only probe a portion of the black hole interior that remains far away from the Kasner singularity. We provide numerical evidence that the Lloyd bound is satisfied by the volume complexity rate in all the …
We prove a positive volume theorem for asymptotically AdS spacetimes: the maximal volume slice has nonnegative vacuum-subtracted volume, and the vacuum-subtracted volume vanishes if and only if the spacetime is identically pure AdS. Under the Complexity=Volume proposal, this constitutes a positive holographic complexity theorem. The result features a number of parallels with the positive energy theorem, including the assumption of an energy condition that excludes false vacuum decay (the AdS weak energy condition). Our proof is rigorously established in broad generality in four bulk dimensions…
Based on holographic arguments Tanaka and Emparan et al have claimed that large localized static black holes do not exist in the one-brane Randall-Sundrum model. If such black holes are time-dependent as they propose, there are potentially significant phenomenological and theoretical consequences. We revisit the issue, arguing that their reasoning does not take into account the strongly coupled nature of the holographic theory. We claim that static black holes with smooth metrics should indeed exist in these theories, and give a simple example. However, although the existence of such solutions…
Applying the "Complexity=Action" conjecture, we study the holographic complexity close to crossover/phase transition in a holographic QCD model proposed by Gubser et al. This model can realize three types of phase transition, crossover or first and second order, depending on the parameters of the dilaton potential. The re-scaled late-time growth rate of holographic complexity density for the three cases is calculated. Our results show that it experiences a fast drop/jump close to the critical point while approaching constants far beyond the critical temperature. Moreover, close to the critical…
Exact holography for cosmological branes in an AdS-Schwarzschild bulk was first introduced in hep-th/0204218. We extend this notion to include all co-dimension one branes moving in non-trivial bulk spacetimes. We use a covariant approach, and show that the bulk Weyl tensor projected on to the brane can always be traded in for "holographic" energy-momentum on the brane. More precisely, a brane moving in a non-maximally symmetric bulk has exactly the same geometry as a brane moving in a maximally symmetric bulk, so long as we include the holographic fields on the brane. This correspondence is ex…
We use the complexity equals action proposal to calculate the rate of complexity growth for field theories that are the holographic duals of asymptotically flat spacetimes. To this aim, we evaluate the on-shell action of asymptotically flat spacetime on the Wheeler-DeWitt patch. This results in the same expression as can be found by taking the flat-space limit from the corresponding formula related to the asymptotically AdS spacetimes. For the bulk dimensions that are greater than three, the rate of complexity growth at late times approaches from above to Lloyd's bound. However, for the three-…
We construct the nonlocal braneworld action in the two-brane Randall-Sundrum model in a holographic setup alternative to Kaluza-Klein description: the action is written as a functional of the two metric and radion fields on the branes. This action effectively describes the dynamics of the gravitational field both on the branes and in the bulk in terms of the brane geometries directly accessible for observations. Its nonlocal form factors incorporate the cumulative effect of the bulk Kaluza-Klein modes. We also consider the reduced version of this action obtained by integrating out the fields o…
The holographic interpretation of the Randall-Sundrum model based on the adaptation of the AdS/CFT correspondence to the braneworld scenario states that the black holes localized on the brane are {\it quantum corrected}. This can be better understood from the fact that the classical $AdS_{5}$ bulk dynamics is dual to gravity coupled with CFT on the four dimensional brane. Based on the back reaction of the CFT on the classical black hole geometry, localized on the brane, it is expected that there exist possible near horizon modifications. This may result in the black hole horizon becoming parti…
We construct the holographic type nonlocal effective action in two-brane Randall-Sundrum model and show that it describes a phase transition between the local and nonlocal phases of the theory -- a cumulative effect of the tower of massive Kaluza-Klein modes. We show that the corresponding renormalization group flow interpolating between the limits of short and long interbrane separations can be dynamically mediated by a repulsive interbrane potential that gives rise to braneworld cosmological scenarios with diverging branes.
In expanding universes, the entanglement entropy must be time-dependent because the background geometry changes with time. For understanding time evolution of quantum correlations, we take into account two distinct holographic models, the dS boundary model and the braneworld model. In this work, we focus on two-dimensional expanding universes for analytic calculation and comparison. Although two holographic models realize expanding universes in totally different ways, we show that they result in the qualitatively same time-dependence for eternal inflation. We further investigate the time-depen…
Holographic complexity in the "complexity equals action" approach is reconsidered relaxing the requirement of reparameterization invariance of the action with the prescription that the action vanish in any vacuum causal diamond. This implies that vacuum anti-de Sitter space plays the role of the reference state. Moreover, the complexity of an anti-de Sitter-Schwarzschild black hole becomes intrinsically finite and saturates Lloyd's bound after a critical time. It is also argued that several artifacts, such as the unphysical negative-time interval, can be removed by truly considering the bulk d…
The holographic conjecture for black holes localized on a 3-brane in Randall-Sundrum braneworld models RS2 predicts the existence of a classical 5D time dependent solution dual to a 4D evaporating black hole. After briefly reviewing recent criticism and presenting some difficulties in the holographic interpretation of the Gregory-Laflamme instability, we simulate some basic features of such a solution by studying null geodesics of the Schwarzschild black string, in particular those propagating nontrivially in the bulk, and using holographic arguments.
We study the holographic "complexity=action'" (CA) and "complexity=volume" (CV) proposals in Einstein-dilaton gravity in all spacetime dimensions. We analytically construct an infinite family of black hole solutions and use CA and CV proposals to investigate the time evolution of the complexity. Using the CA proposal, we find dimensional dependent violation of the Lloyd bound in early as well as in late times. Moreover, depending on the parameters of the theory, the bound violation relative to the conformal field theory result can be tailored in the early times as well. In contrast to the CA p…
We present significant evidence in favour of the holographic conjecture that ``4D black holes localized on the brane found by solving the classical bulk equations in $AdS_5$ are quantum corrected black holes and not classical ones''. The crucial test is the calculation of the quantum correction to the Newtonian potential based on a numerical computation of $<T^a_b>$ in Schwarzschild spacetime for matter fields in the zero temperature Boulware vacuum state. For the case of the conformally invariant scalar field the leading order term is found to be $M/45πr^3$. This result is equivalent to the r…
We refine the calculation of holographic complexity of black holes in the complexity equals action approach by applying the recently introduced criterion that the action of any causal diamond in static vacuum regions must vanish identically. This criterion fixes empty anti-de Sitter (AdS) spacetime as the reference state with vanishing complexity and renders holographic complexity explicitly finite in all the cases we consider. The cases considered here include the Reissner-Nordström-AdS black hole, the rotating BTZ black hole, the Kerr-AdS black hole, and AdS-Vaidya spacetime. The criterion i…
