We numerically construct a family of five-dimensional black holes exhibiting a line of first-order phase transitions terminating at a critical point at finite chemical potential and temperature. These black holes are constructed so that the equation of state and baryon susceptibilities approximately match QCD lattice data at vanishing chemical potential. The critical endpoint in the particular model we consider has temperature 143 MeV and chemical potential 783 MeV. Critical exponents are calculated, with results that are consistent with mean-field scaling relations.
We consider a holographic model constructed from the intersecting brane configuration D4-$\bar{\rm{D4}}$/D4 in noncritical string theory. We study the chiral phase diagram of this holographic QCD-like model with a finite baryon chemical potential through the supergravity dual approximation.
We consider a holographic model constructed from an intersecting brane configuration $D4/D4/\bar{D4}$ in noncritical string theory. We study the baryon in the confined phase of this supergravity by considering the source term for the baryon. Also, the thermodynamics functions are studied. Moreover, we obtain the binding energy of the baryon in this holographic QCD-like model.
We consider a noncritical holographic model constructed from an intersecting brane configuration D4/$\bar{\rm{D4}}$-D4 with an external magnetic field. We investigate the influences of this magnetic field on strongly coupled dynamics by the gauge/gravity correspondence.
In the presence of finite chemical potential $μ$, we holographically compute the entanglement of purification in a $2+1$- and $3+1$-dimensional field theory and also in a $3+1$-dimensional field theory with a critical point. We observe that compared to $2+1$- and $3+1$-dimensional field theories, the behavior of entanglement of purification near critical point is different and it is not a monotonic function of $\fracμ{T}$ where $T$ is the temperature of the field theory. Therefore, the entanglement of purification distinguishes the critical point in the field theory. We also discuss the depend…
In the paper using matching method in the probe limit, we investigate some properties of holographic superconductor in Gauss-Bonnet gravity with Born-Infeld electrodynamics . We discuss the effects of the Gauss-Bonnet coupling $\a$ and Born-Infeld parameter $b$ on the critical temperature and condensate. We find that both of $\a$ and $b$ make the critical temperature decrease, which implies the condensate harder to form. Moreover we study the magnetic effect on holographic superconductor and obtain that the ratio between the critical magnetic field and the square of the critical temperature in…
In this letter we study aspects of the holographic superconductors analytically in the presence of a constant external magnetic field. We show that the critical temperature and critical magnetic field can be calculated at nonzero temperature. We detect the Meissner effect in such superconductors. A universal relation between black hole mass $ M$ and critical magnetic field $H_c$ is proposed as $\frac{H_c}{M^{2/3}}\leq 0.687365$. We discuss some aspects of phase transition in terms of black hole entropy and the Bekenstein's entropy to energy upper bound.
We compute the holographic stress tensor and the logarithmic energy-momentum tensor of Einstein-Weyl gravity at the critical point. This computation is carried out performing a holographic expansion in a bulk action supplemented by the Gauss-Bonnet term with a fixed coupling. The renormalization scheme defined by the addition of this topological term has the remarkable feature that all Einstein modes are identically cancelled both from the action and its variation. Thus, what remains comes from a nonvanishing Bach tensor, which accounts for non-Einstein modes associated to logarithmic terms wh…
We explore the consequences of multi-trace deformations in applications of gauge-gravity duality to condensed matter physics. We find that they introduce a powerful new "knob" that can implement spontaneous symmetry breaking, and can be used to construct a new type of holographic superconductor. This knob can be tuned to drive the critical temperature to zero, leading to a new quantum critical point. We calculate nontrivial critical exponents, and show that fluctuations of the order parameter are `locally' quantum critical in the disordered phase. Most notably the dynamical critical exponent i…
We study time-dependent perturbations to a family of five-dimensional black hole spacetimes constructed as a holographic model of the QCD phase diagram. We use the results to calculate two transport coefficients, the bulk viscosity and conductivity, as well as the associated baryon diffusion constant, throughout the phase diagram. Near the critical point in the T-mu plane, the transport coefficients remain finite, although their derivatives diverge, and the diffusion goes to zero. This provides further evidence that large-N_c gauge theories suppress convective transport. We also find a diverge…
We study a holographic gauge theory dual to the D3/D5 intersection. We consider a pure gauge B-field flux through the internal two-sphere wrapped by the probe D5--brane, which corresponds to a non-commutative configuration of adjoint scalars. There is a domain wall separating the theory into regions with different ranks of the adjoint group. At zero temperature the theory is supersymmetric and at finite temperature there is a critical point of a second order phase transition. We study the corresponding critical exponents and find that the second derivatives of the free energy, with respect to …
We investigate the effect of spacetime backreaction on the upper critical magnetic field for s-wave holographic superconductors by using the matching method. The backreaction of the constant external magnetic field and the electric field to the background geometry leads to a dyonic black hole solution. The magnetic fields as well as the electric fields acting as gravitational sources tend to depress the critical temperature of the superconductor. We derive the analytical expression for the upper critical magnetic field up to $\mathcal{O}(κ^2)$ order and find that backreaction makes the upper c…
It is very interesting that all holographic superconductors, such as s-wave, p-wave and d-wave holographic superconductors, show the universal mean-field critical exponent 1/2 at the critical temperature, just like Gindzburg-Landau (G-L) theory for second order phase transitions. Now it is believed that the universal critical exponents appear because the dual gravity theory is classic in the large $N$ limit. However, even in the large $N$ limit there is an exception called "non-mean-field theory": an extension of the s-wave model with a cubic term of the charged scalar field shows a different …
The dynamics of a particle influenced by strongly-coupled quantum critical theories is studied by the holographic approach. A real-time prescription for the AdS/CFT correspondence in the context of nonequilibrium physics is proposed from mainly the field theoretic consideration, and the associated holographic influence functional is obtained. We then study the decoherence dynamics of a particle induced by the quantum critical theories with a dynamical exponent $z$. We find that as $z$ increases, the decoherence effect becomes less significant. The similar behavior is found as we heat up the en…
We study certain properties of the low energy regime of a theory which resembles four dimensional YM theory in the framework of a non-critical holographic gravity dual. We use for the latter the near extremal $AdS_6$ non-critical SUGRA. We extract the glueball spectra that associates with the fluctuations of the dilaton, one form and the graviton and compare the results to those of the critical near extremal $D4$ model and lattice simulations. We show an area law behavior for the Wilson loop and screening for the 't Hooft loop. The Luscher term is found to be $-{3/24}\frac π{L}$. We derive the…
The holographic complexity has been studied in a background which includes a critical point in the dual field theory. We have examined how the complexity rate and the saturation time of dynamical variables in the theory behave as one moves towards the critical point. Two significant results of our analysis are that (i) it takes more time for the complexity in field theory dual to become time dependent as one moves away from the critical point and (ii) near the critical point the complexity starts evolving linearly in time sooner than the other points away from it. We also observe different beh…
We construct general models for holographic superconductivity parametrized by three couplings which are functions of a real scalar field and show that under general assumptions they describe superconducting phase transitions. While some features are universal and model independent, important aspects of the quantum critical behavior strongly depend on the choice of couplings, such as the order of the phase transition and critical exponents of second-order phase transitions. In particular, we study a one-parameter model where the phase transition changes from second to first order above some cri…
We study "holographic superconductors" in various spacetime dimensions. We compute most of the static critical exponents in the linear perturbations and show that they take the standard mean-field values. We also consider the dynamic universality class for these models and show that they belong to model A with dynamic critical exponent z=2.
We study the holographic entanglement measures such as the holographic mutual information, HMI, and the holographic entanglement of purification, EoP, in a holographic QCD model at finite temperature and zero chemical potential. This model can realize various types of phase transitions including crossover, first order and second order phase transitions. We use the HMI and EoP to probe the phase structure of this model and we find that at the critical temperature they can characterize the phase structure of the model. Moreover we obtain the critical exponent using the HMI and EoP.
In systems undergoing second order phase transitions, the temperature integral of the specific heat over temperature from zero to the critical temperature is the same in both the normal and ordered phases. This entropy balance relates the critical temperature to the distribution of degrees of freedom in the normal and ordered states. Quantum criticality and fractionalization can imply an increased number of low energy degrees of freedom in both the normal and ordered states. We explore the role of entropy balance in holographic models of superconductivity, focussing on the interplay between qu…
This note contains discussions on the entanglement entropy and mutual information of a strongly coupled field theory with a critical point which has a holographic dual. We investigate analytically, in the specific regimes of parameters, how these non-local operators behave near the critical point. Interestingly, we observe that although the mutual information is constant at the critical point, its slope shows a power-law divergence in the vicinity of the critical point. We show that the leading behavior of mutual information at and near the critical point could yield a set of critical exponent…
In this paper, we have investigated the Meissner effect of holographic superconductors in the presence of Dirac-Born-Infeld electrodynamics. The matching method is applied to obtain the critical magnetic field and the critical temperature. The critical magnetic field obtained from this investigation shows the effects of the DBI parameter $b$ and differs from that obtained from Born electrodynamics because of the extra $\vec{E}.\vec{B}$ term in the Dirac-Born-Infeld theory. It is observed that the critical magnetic field increases in Dirac-Born-Infeld theory compared to that in the Born theory.
We study the phase transition in the holographic entanglement entropy for various confining models. This transition occurs for the entanglement entropy of a strip at a critical value of the strip width. Our main interest is to examine the critical width for models with several parameters. For these models, the critical width, the glueball mass and the string tension all become functions of these two parameters. Comparing the behavior of the critical width in the entanglement entropy and these other scales, we find that $l_c$ seems to follow closely the deconfinement temperature and the gluebal…
The properties of $(d-1)$-dimensional $s$-wave holographic superconductor in the presence of power-Maxwell field is explored. We study the probe limit in which the scalar and gauge fields do not backreact on the background geometry. Our study is based on the matching of solutions on the boundary and on the horizon at some intermediate point. At first, the case without external magnetic field is considered, and the critical temperature is obtained in terms of the charge density, the dimensionality, and the power-Maxwell exponent. Then, a magnetic field is turned on in the $d$-dimensional bulk w…
We study the nearly critical behaviour of holographic superfluids at finite temperature and chemical potential in their probe limit. This allows us to examine the coupled dynamics of the full complex order parameter with the charge density of the system. We derive an effective theory for the long wavelength limit of the gapless and pseudo-gapped modes by using analytic techniques in the bulk. We match our construction with Model F in the classification of Hohenberg and Halperin and compute the complex dissipative kinetic transport coefficient in terms of thermodynamics and black hole horizon d…
We study 2-dimensional Logarithmic Galilean Conformal Algebra (LGCA) by making use of a contraction of Topologically Massive Gravity at critical point. We observe that using a naive contraction at the critical point fails to give a well defined theory, though contracting the theory while we are approaching the critical point leads to a well behaved expressions for two point functions of the energy-momentum tensors of LGCA.
We investigate the effects of Lifshitz dynamical critical exponent z on a family of minimal D=4+1 holographic superconducting models, with a particular focus on magnetic phenomena. We see that it is possible to have a consistent Ginzburg-Landau approach to holographic superconductivity in a Lifshitz background. By following this phenomenological approach we are able to compute a wide array of physical quantities. We also calculate the Ginzburg-Landau parameter for different condensates, and conclude that in systems with higher dynamical critical exponent, vortex formation is more strongly unfa…
We investigate the analytical properties of the s-wave and p-wave holographic insulator/superconductor phase transitions at zero temperature. In the probe limit, we analytically calculate the critical chemical potentials at which the insulator/superconductor phase transition occurs. Those resulting analytical values perfectly match the previous numerical values. We also study the relations between the condensation values and the chemical potentials near the critical point. We find that the critical exponent for condensation operator is 1/2 for both models. The linear relations between the char…
We construct an analytic solution of the Einstein-SU(2)-Yang-Mills system as the holographic dual of an anisotropic superfluid near its critical point, up to leading corrections in both the inverse Yang-Mills coupling and a symmetry breaking order parameter. We have also calculated the ratio of shear viscosity to entropy density in this background, and shown that the universality of this ratio is lost in the broken symmetry direction. The ratio displays a scaling behavior near the critical point with critical exponent $β=1$, at the leading order in the double expansion.
We analytically describe the properties of the s-wave holographic superconductor with the Exponential nonlinear electrodynamics in the Lifshitz black hole background in four-dimensions. Employing an assumption the scalar and gauge fields backreact on the background geometry, we calculate the critical temperature as well as the condensation operator. Based on Sturm-Liouville method, we show that the critical temperature decreases with increasing exponential nonlinear electrodynamics and Lifshitz dynamical exponent, z, indicating that condensation becomes difficult. Also we find that the effects…
We study the gravity duals of striped holographic superconductors in the AdS black hole and AdS soliton backgrounds. We show the dependences of the condensation and the critical temperature/critical chemical potential on the inhomogeneity in these two different spacetimes. By exploring the dynamics of the normal phase through the scalar field perturbation, we argue that the pair susceptibility and the conductivity can be possible phenomenological indications to disclose the property of inhomogeneity.
We study a minimally coupled charged scalar field in a charged Lifshitz background. For z=2, we find an analytic expression for the corresponding low energy retarded Green's function. Unlike the RN-AdS case, the position of the superfluid surfaces depends on the charge of the scalar field only through the IR scaling dimension. We show that by increasing the dynamical exponent, the dual theory becomes more stable. We also show that the background could suffer from an instability of the IR geometry leading to a bifurcating critical point. It also allows the existence of scalar hair, causing hybr…
We identify the near-critical effective theory (EFT) for a wide class of low-temperature phase transitions found via holography. The EFT is of the semi-holographic type and describes both holographic Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless (BKT) and second-order transitions with non-trivial scaling. It is a simple generalization of the Ginzburg-Landau-Wilson paradigm to systems with an emergent (or hidden) conformal sector. Having identified the near-critical EFT, we explore its basic phenomenology by computing critical exponents and low-frequency correlators.
We establish analytically that the potential of N=8 supergravity in four dimensions has a new N=1 supersymmetric critical point with U(1) x U(1) symmetry. We work within a consistent N=1 supersymmetric truncation and obtain the holographic flow to this new point from the N=8 critical point. The operators that drive the flow in the dual field theory are identified and it is suggested the new critical point might represent a new conformal phase in the holographic fermion droplet models with sixteen supersymmetries. The flow also has c_{IR}/c_{UV}} = 1/2. We examine the stability of all twenty kn…
In this Letter, we consider a Non-Commutative (NC) extension of AdS-CFT correspondence and its effects on holographic superconductors. NC corrections are incorporated via the NC generalization of Schwarzschild black hole metric in AdS with the probe limit. We study NC effects on the relations connecting the charge density and the critical temperature of the Holographic Superconductors. Furthermore, condensation operator of the superconductor has been analyzed. Our results suggest that generically, NC effects increase the critical temperature of the holographic superconductor.
We investigate the butterfly effect and charge diffusion near the quantum phase transition in holographic approach. We argue that their criticality is controlled by the holographic scaling geometry with deformations induced by a relevant operator at finite temperature. Specifically, in the quantum critical region controlled by a single fixed point, the butterfly velocity decreases when deviating from the critical point. While, in the non-critical region, the behavior of the butterfly velocity depends on the specific phase at low temperature. Moreover, in the holographic Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-…
Critical phenomena in gravitational collapse exhibit the universal features of self-similarity, critical scaling, and the appearance of a naked singularity. We study critical collapse in AdS, focusing on holographic field theory observables. We demonstrate that the echoing period, critical exponent, and signatures of the naked singularity can all be extracted from the holographic stress tensor.

We build a holographic $s$-wave conductor/superconductor model and an insulator/superconductor model in the four-dimensional conformal anomaly corrected~(CAC) AdS gravity. The effects of CAC parameter $α$ are studied using both numerical and analytical methods in the probe approximation. Concretely, when the CAC parameter increases, the critical temperature increases for the conductor/superconductor phase transition, while the critical chemical potential decreases for the insulator/superconductor case, which suggests that the increasing CAC parameter enhances both superconducting phase transit…
We investigate holographic s-wave superconductors with nonlinear arcsin-electrodynamics in the background of Schwarzschild anti-de Sitter black holes. The analytical Sturm-Liouville eigenvalue problem is explored and we assume that the scalar and electromagnetic fields do not influence on the background metric (the probe limit). The critical temperatures of phase transitions depending on the parameter of the model is obtained. We show that in our case the condensation formation becomes easier compared to Born-Infeld nonlinear electrodynamics. The critical exponent near the critical temperature…
Based on the Sturm-Liouville (SL) eigenvalue problem, we analytically study several properties of holographic $s$-wave superconductors with exponential nonlinear electrodynamics in the background of Schwarzschild anti-de Sitter (AdS) black holes. We assume the probe limit in which the scalar and gauge fields do not back react on the background metric. We show that for this system, one can still obtain an analytical relation between the critical temperature and the charge density. Interestingly enough, we find that logarithmic nonlinear electrodynamics decreases the critical temperature, $T_c$,…
We review black holes with second-order phase transition in string theory (R-charged black holes and holographic superconductors) and review their static and dynamic critical phenomena. Holographic superconductors have conventional mean-field values for static critical exponents, but R-charged black holes have unconventional ones. For dynamic universality class, holographic superconductors belong to model A, and R-charged black holes belong to model B in the classification of Hohenberg and Halperin. The analysis suggests that some black holes do obey the theory of critical phenomena in condens…
In this note we study CFT$_2$ Virasoro conformal blocks with heavy operators in the large-$c$ limit in the context of AdS$_3$/CFT$_2$ correspondence. We compute the lengths of the holographic Steiner trees dual to the $5$-point and $6$-point conformal blocks using the superlight approximation when one or more dimensions are much less than the others. These results are generalized for $N$-point holographic Steiner trees dual to $(N+1)$-point conformal blocks with superlight weights.
We analytically sutdy the effect of external magnetic field in a Holographic superconductor by using Sturm-Liouville method. We estimate the coefficient of proportionality at critical temperature and find its denpendence on external magnetic field. By exploring phase diagrams of critical temperature and magnetic field for various condensates, we conclude that a Meissner-like effect is a general feature in Holographic superconductors. We also study the quantum phase transition at zero temperature and find that critical charge density increases linearly with the condensate dimension.
We investigate the analytical method in studying the holographic superfluid model which is described by Maxwell field minimally coupling to a charged scalar field in a fixed AdS black hole background. We propose a method that enables us to find exact value of coefficient in the solution and thus obtain higher-order expansion of the associated Landau free energy of the holographic superfluid with flow. We determine the critical value of superfluid velocity at the tricritical point of holographic superfluid and compare it with the numerical value.
We investigate vortex lattice solutions in a holographic superconductor model in asymptotically $AdS_4$ spacetime which includes the gravitational backreaction of the vortex. The circular cell approximation, which is known to give a good result for several physical quantities in the Ginzburg-Landau model, is used. The critical magnetic fields and the magnetization curve are computed. The vortex lattice profiles are compared to expectations from the Abrikosov solution in the regime nearby the upper critical magnetic field $H_{2c}$ for which superconductivity is lost.
We calculate the holographic entanglement entropy for the holographic QCD phase diagram considered in [Knaute, Yaresko, Kämpfer (2017), arXiv:1702.06731] and explore the resulting qualitative behavior over the temperature-chemical potential plane. In agreement with the thermodynamic result, the phase diagram exhibits the same critical point as the onset of a first-order phase transition curve. We compare the phase diagram of the entanglement entropy to that of the thermodynamic entropy density and find a striking agreement in the vicinity of the critical point. Thus, the holographic entangleme…
We calculate the holographic three-point functions in N = 4 super-Yang-Mills theory in the case when two of the operators are semiclassical and one is dual to a supergravity mode. We further discuss the transition to the regime when all three operators are semiclassical.
We investigate holographic superconductors in asympototically geometries with hyperscaling violation. The mass of the scalar field decouples from the UV dimension of the dual scalar operator and can be chosen as negative as we want, without disturbing the Breitenlohner-Freedman bound. We first numerically find that the scalar condenses below a critical temperature and a gap opens in the real part of the conductivity, indicating the onset of superconductivity. We further analytically explore the effects of the hyperscaling violation on the superconducting transition temperature. We find that th…
We consider universal aspects of a holographic Schwinger effect in general backgrounds with an external homogeneous electric field. The argument is based on the potential analysis developed in our previous work. Under some conditions, there always exists a critical electric field, above which the potential barrier vanishes and the system becomes unstable catastrophically. The critical value agrees with the one obtained from the Dirac-Born-Infeld action. For general confining backgrounds, we show that the Schwinger effect does not occur when the electric field is weaker than the confining strin…
We study a holographic model of a relativistic quantum system with a global U(1) symmetry, at non-zero temperature and density. When the temperature falls below a critical value, we find a second-order superfluid phase transition with mean-field critical exponents. In the symmetry-broken phase, we determine the speed of second sound as a function of temperature. As the velocity of the superfluid component relative to the normal component increases, the superfluid transition goes through a tricritical point and becomes first-order.
We derive a holographic dual for a gauged matrix model in general dimensions from a first-principle construction. The dual theory is shown to be a closed string field theory which includes a compact two-form gauge field coupled with closed strings in one higher dimensional space. Possible phases of the matrix model are discussed in the holographic description. Besides the confinement phase and the IR free deconfinement phase, there can be two different classes of critical states. The first class describes `holographic critical states' where strings are deconfined in the bulk. The second class …
We show that strongly-coupled, translation-invariant holographic IR phases at finite density can be classified according to the scaling behaviour of the metric, the electric potential and the electric flux introducing four critical exponents, independently of the details of the setup. Solutions fall into two classes, depending on whether they break relativistic symmetry or not. The critical exponents determine key properties of these phases, like thermodynamic stability, the (ir)relevant deformations around them, the low-frequency scaling of the optical conductivity and the nature of the spect…
We analytically investigate the phase transition between the holographic insulator and superconductor with Weyl corrections by using the variational method for the Sturm-Liouville eigenvalue problem. We find that similar to the curvature corrections, in p-wave model, the higher Weyl couplings make the insulator/superconductor phase transition harder to occur. However, in s-wave case the Weyl corrections do not influence the critical chemical potential, which is in contrast to the effect caused by the curvature corrections. Moreover, we observe that the Weyl corrections will not affect the crit…
We consider the gravity dual of strongly coupled system at a Lifshitz-fixed point and finite temperature, which was constructed in a recent work arXiv:0909.0263. We construct an Abelian Higgs model in that background and calculate condensation and conductivity using holographic techniques. We find that condensation happens and DC conductivity blows up when temperature turns below a critical value.
We use the variational method for the Sturm-Liouville eigenvalue problem to analytically calculate some properties of holographic superconductors with Gauss-Bonnet gravity in probe limit. By studying the holographic p-wave and s-wave superconductors in (3+1)-dimensional boundary field theories, it is found that near the critical temperature, the critical exponent of the condensation is 1/2 which is the universal value in mean-field theory. We also find that when Gauss-Bonnet coefficients grow bigger the operators on the boundary field theory will be harder to condense. These are in good agreem…
We present the new method to calculate the critical temperature as a function of $Δ$, conformal dimension of the cooper operator. We find that, in the regime $1/2\leq Δ<1$ where the AC conductivity does not show a gap, the critical temperature is not well defined. We also got expression of AC conductivity for $Δ=2$, which agrees with numerical result in the probe approximation.
