We characterize which graph parameters are partition functions of a vertex model over an algebraically closed field of characteristic 0 (in the sense of de la Harpe and Jones). We moreover characterize when the vertex model can be taken so that its moment matrix has finite rank.
We characterize which graph invariants are partition functions of a spin model over the complex numbers, in terms of the rank growth of associated `connection matrices'.
Weight-equitable partitions of graphs, which are a natural extension of the well-known equitable partitions, have been shown to be a powerful tool to weaken the regularity assumption in several well-known eigenvalue bounds. In this work we aim to further our algebraic and computational understanding of weight-equitable partitions. We do so by showing several spectral properties and algebraic characterizations, and by providing a method to find coarse weight-equitable partitions.
In a pair of recent papers, Andrews, Fraenkel and Sellers provide a complete characterization for the number of $m$-ary partitions modulo $m$, with and without gaps. In this paper we extend these results to the case of coloured $m$-ary partitions, with and without gaps. Our method of proof is different, giving explicit expansions for the generating functions modulo $m$
We characterize which graph invariants are partition functions of an edge-coloring model over the complex numbers, in terms of the rank growth of associated `connection matrices'.
We prove a general lemma about partitioning the vertex set of a graph into subgraphs of bounded degree. This lemma extends a sequence of results of Lovász, Catlin, Kostochka and Rabern.
A \emph{$k$-tree} is a chordal graph with no $(k+2)$-clique. An \emph{$\ell$-tree-partition} of a graph $G$ is a vertex partition of $G$ into `bags', such that contracting each bag to a single vertex gives an $\ell$-tree (after deleting loops and replacing parallel edges by a single edge). We prove that for all $k\geq\ell\geq0$, every $k$-tree has an $\ell$-tree-partition in which every bag induces a connected $\floor{k/(\ell+1)}$-tree. An analogous result is proved for oriented $k$-trees.
We consider the $Π$-free Deletion problem parameterized by the size of a vertex cover, for a range of graph properties $Π$. Given an input graph $G$, this problem asks whether there is a subset of at most $k$ vertices whose removal ensures the resulting graph does not contain a graph from $Π$ as induced subgraph. Many vertex-deletion problems such as Perfect Deletion, Wheel-free Deletion, and Interval Deletion fit into this framework. We introduce the concept of characterizing a graph property $Π$ by low-rank adjacencies, and use it as the cornerstone of a general kernelization theorem for $Π$…
Let $γ(G)$ denote the domination number of a graph $G$. A vertex $v\in V(G)$ is called a \emph{critical vertex} of $G$ if $γ(G-v)=γ(G)-1$. A graph is called \emph{vertex-critical} if every vertex of it is critical. In this paper, we correspondingly introduce two such definitions: (i) a set $S\subseteq V(G)$ is called a \emph{strong critical vertex-set} of $G$ if $γ(G-S)=γ(G)-|S|$; (ii) a graph $G$ is called \emph{strong $l$-vertex-sets-critical} if $V(G)$ can be partitioned into $l$ strong critical vertex-sets of $G$. Whereafter, we give some properties of strong $l$-vertex-sets-critical graph…
Crapo introduced a construction of interval partitions of the Boolean lattice for sets equipped with matroid structure. This construction, in the context of graphic matroids, is related to the notion of edge activities introduced by Tutte. This implies that each spanning subgraph of a connected graph can be constructed from edges of exactly one spanning tree by deleting a unique subset of internally active edges and adding a unique subset of externally active edges. Since the family of vertex independent sets does not give rise to a matroid structure we can not apply Crapo's construction on th…
The core vertex set of a graph is an invariant of the graph. It consists of those vertices associated with the non-zero entries of the nullspace vectors of a $\{0,1\}$-adjacency matrix. The remaining vertices of the graph form the core--forbidden vertex set. For graphs with independent core vertices, such as bipartite minimal configurations and trees, the nullspace induces a well defined three part vertex partition. The parts of this partition are the core vertex set, their neighbours and the remote core--forbidden vertices. The set of the remote core--forbidden vertices are those not adjacent…
We investigate the problem of ordering trees according to their Laplacian energy. More precisely, given a positive integer $n$, we find a class of cardinality approximately $\sqrt{n}$ whose elements are the $n$-vertex trees with largest Laplacian energy. The main tool for establishing this result is a new upper bound on the sum $S_k(T)$ of the $k$ largest Laplacian eigenvalues of an $n$-vertex tree $T$ with diameter at least four, where $k \in \{1,...,n\}$.
A core of a graph X is a vertex minimal subgraph to which X admits a homomorphism. Hahn and Tardif have shown that for vertex transitive graphs, the size of the core must divide the size of the graph. This motivates the following question: when can the vertex set of a vertex transitive graph be partitioned into sets each of which induce a copy of its core? We show that normal Cayley graphs and vertex transitive graphs with cores half their size always admit such partitions. We also show that the vertex sets of vertex transitive graphs with cores less than half their size do not, in general, ha…
In 2007 Matamala proved that if $G$ is a simple graph with maximum degree $Δ\geq 3$ not containing $K_{Δ+1}$ as a subgraph and $s, t$ are positive integers such that $s+t \geq Δ$, then the vertex set of $G$ admits a partition $(S,T)$ such that $G[S]$ is a maximum order $(s-1)$-degenerate subgraph of $G$ and $G[T]$ is a $(t-1)$-degenerate subgraph of $G$. This result extended earlier results obtained by Borodin, by Bollobás and Manvel, by Catlin, by Gerencsér and by Catlin and Lai. In this paper we prove a hypergraph version of this result and extend it to variable degeneracy and to partitions …
A graph is $(k_1,k_2)$-colorable if its vertex set can be partitioned into a graph with maximum degree at most $k_1$ and and a graph with maximum degree at most $k_2$. We show that every $(C_3,C_4,C_6)$-free planar graph is $(0,6)$-colorable. We also show that deciding whether a $(C_3,C_4,C_6)$-free planar graph is $(0,3)$-colorable is NP-complete.
An internal partition of a graph is a partitioning of the vertex set into two parts such that for every vertex, at least half of its neighbors are on its side. We prove that for every positive integer $r$, asymptotically almost every $2r$-regular graph has an internal partition.
An open neighbourhood locating-dominating set is a set $S$ of vertices of a graph $G$ such that each vertex of $G$ has a neighbour in $S$, and for any two vertices $u,v$ of $G$, there is at least one vertex in $S$ that is a neighbour of exactly one of $u$ and $v$. We characterize those graphs whose only open neighbourhood locating-dominating set is the whole set of vertices. More precisely, we prove that these graphs are exactly the graphs all whose connected components are half-graphs (a half-graph is a special bipartite graph with both parts of the same size, where each part can be ordered s…
Given an ordered partition $Π=\{P_1,P_2, ...,P_t\}$ of the vertex set $V$ of a connected graph $G=(V,E)$, the \emph{partition representation} of a vertex $v\in V$ with respect to the partition $Π$ is the vector $r(v|Π)=(d(v,P_1),d(v,P_2),...,d(v,P_t))$, where $d(v,P_i)$ represents the distance between the vertex $v$ and the set $P_i$. A partition $Π$ of $V$ is a \emph{resolving partition} if different vertices of $G$ have different partition representations, i.e., for every pair of vertices $u,v\in V$, $r(u|Π)\ne r(v|Π)$. The \emph{partition dimension} of $G$ is the minimum number of sets in a…
An edge colouring of a graph is said to be an $r$-local colouring if the edges incident to any vertex are coloured with at most $r$ colours. Generalising a result of Bessy and Thomassé, we prove that the vertex set of any $2$-locally coloured complete graph may be partitioned into two disjoint monochromatic cycles of different colours. Moreover, for any natural number $r$, we show that the vertex set of any $r$-locally coloured complete graph may be partitioned into $O(r^2 \log r)$ disjoint monochromatic cycles. This generalises a result of Erdős, Gyárfás and Pyber.
Can the vertices of a graph $G$ be partitioned into $A \cup B$, so that $G[A]$ is a line-graph and $G[B]$ is a forest? Can $G$ be partitioned into a planar graph and a perfect graph? The NP-completeness of these problems are just special cases of our result: if ${\cal P}$ and ${\cal Q}$ are additive induced-hereditary graph properties, then $({\cal P}, {\cal Q})$-colouring is NP-hard, with the sole exception of graph 2-colouring (the case where both $\cal P$ and $\cal Q$ are the set ${\cal O}$ of finite edgeless graphs). Moreover, $({\cal P}, {\cal Q})$-colouring is NP-complete iff ${\cal P}$-…
A partition $Π$ of $V$ is a \emph{resolving partition} of $G$ if different vertices of $G$ have different partition representations, i.e., for every pair of vertices $u,v\in V$, $r(u|Π)\ne r(v|Π)$. The \emph{partition dimension} of $G$ is the minimum number of se…
We consider the {\em Shaped Partition Problem} of partitioning $n$ given vectors in real $k$-space into $p$ parts so as to maximize an arbitrary objective function which is convex on the sum of vectors in each part, subject to arbitrary constraints on the number of elements in each part. In addressing this problem, we study the {\em Shaped Partition Polytope} defined as the convex hull of solutions. The Shaped Partition Problem captures ${\cal N}{\cal P}$-hard problems such as the Max-Cut problem and the Traveling Salesperson problem, and the Shaped Partition Polytope may have exponentially ma…
In this paper, we explain a connection between a family of free-fermionic six-vertex models and a discrete time evolution operator on one-dimensional Fermionic Fock space. The family of ice models generalize those with domain wall boundary, and we focus on two sets of Boltzmann weights whose partition functions were previously shown to generalize a generating function identity of Tokuyama. We produce associated Hamiltonians that recover these Boltzmann weights, and furthermore calculate the partition functions using commutation relations and elementary combinatorics. We give an expression for …
Given a finite connected simple graph $G=(V,E)$ with vertex set $V$ and edge set $E\subseteq \binom{V}{2}$, we will show that $1.$ the (necessarily unique) smallest block graph with vertex set $V$ whose edge set contains $E$ is uniquely determined by the $V$-indexed family ${\bf P}_G:=\big(π_0(G^{(v)})\big)_{v \in V}$ of the various partitions $π_0(G^{(v)})$ of the set $V$ into the set of connected components of the graph $G^{(v)}:=(V,\{e\in E: v\notin e\})$, $2.$ the edge set of this block graph coincides with set of all $2$-subsets $\{u,v\}$ of $V$ for which $u$ and $v$ are, for all $w\in V-…
The determinantal form of the partition function of the 6-vertex model with domain wall boundary conditions was given by Izergin. It is known that for a special value of the crossing parameter the partition function reduces to a Schur polynomial. Caradoc, Foda and Kitanine computed the partition function of the higher spin generalization of the 6-vertex model. In the present work it is shown that for a special value of the crossing parameter, referred to as the combinatorial point, the partition function reduces to a Macdonald polynomial.
In this paper, we show that every planar graph without $4$-cycles and $6$-cycles has a partition of its vertex set into two sets, where one set induces a forest, and the other induces a forest with maximum degree at most $2$ (equivalently, a disjoint union of paths). Note that we can partition the vertex set of a forest into two independent sets. However, a pair of independent sets combined may not induce a forest. Thus our result extends the result of Wang and Xu (2013) stating that the vertex set of every planar graph without $4$-cycles and $6$-cycles can be partitioned into three sets, wher…
We prove two identities of Hall-Littlewood polynomials, which appeared recently in a paper by two of the authors. We also conjecture, and in some cases prove, new identities which relate infinite sums of symmetric polynomials and partition functions associated with symmetry classes of alternating sign matrices. These identities generalize those already found in our earlier paper, via the introduction of additional parameters. The left hand side of each of our identities is a simple refinement of a relevant Cauchy or Littlewood identity. The right hand side of each identity is (one of the two f…
In this paper, we introduce and analyze a new switch operator for the six-vertex model. This operator, derived from the Yang-Baxter equation, allows us to express the partition function with arbitrary boundaries in terms of a base case with domain wall boundary conditions. As an application, we derive explicit formulas for the factorial Schur functions and their generalizations. Our results provide new insights into the relationship between boundary conditions and partition functions in the six-vertex model.
A graph $G$ of order $nv$ where $n\geq 2$ and $v\geq 2$ is said to be weakly $(n,v)$-clique-partitioned if its vertex set can be decomposed in a unique way into $n$ vertex-disjoint $v$-cliques. It is strongly $(n,v)$-clique-partitioned if in addition, the only $v$-cliques of $G$ are the $n$ cliques in the decomposition. We determine the structure of such graphs which have the largest possible number of edges.
Balogh, Barát, Gerbner, Gyárfás, and Sárközy proposed the following conjecture. Let $G$ be a graph on $n$ vertices with minimum degree at least $3n/4$. Then for every $2$-edge-colouring of $G$, the vertex set $V(G)$ may be partitioned into two vertex-disjoint cycles, one of each colour. We prove that this conjecture holds for $n$ large enough, improving approximate results by the aforementioned authors and by DeBiasio and Nelsen.
An internal partition of an $n$-vertex graph $G=(V,E)$ is a partition of $V$ such that every vertex has at least as many neighbors in its own part as in the other part. It has been conjectured that every $d$-regular graph with $n>N(d)$ vertices has an internal partition. Here we prove this for $d=6$. The case $d=n-4$ is of particular interest and leads to interesting new open problems on cubic graphs. We also provide new lower bounds on $N(d)$ and find new families of graphs with no internal partitions. Weighted versions of these problems are considered as well.
The $λ$-core vertices of a graph correspond to the non-zero entries of some eigenvector of $λ$ for a universal adjacency matrix $\mathbf{U}$ of the graph. We define a partition of the vertex set $V$ based on the $λ$-core vertex set and its neighbourhoods at a distance $r$, and give a number of results relating the structure of the graph to this partition. For such partitions, we also define an entropic measure for the information content of a graph, related to every distinct eigenvalue $λ$ of $\mathbf{U}$, and discuss its properties and potential applications.
Let $X$ be a finite, simple graph with vertex set $V(X)$. The $2$-distance graph $T_2(X)$ of $X$ is the graph with the same vertex set as $X$ and two vertices are adjacent if and only if their distance in $X$ is exactly $2$. A graph $G$ is a $2$-distance graph if there exists a graph $X$ such that $T_2(X)=G$. In this paper, we give three characterizations of $2$-distance graphs, and find all graphs $X$ such that $T_2(X)=kP_2$ or $K_m \cup K_n$, where $k \ge 2$ is an integer, $P_2$ is the path of order $2$, and $K_m$ is the complete graph of order $m \ge 1$.
A path partition (also referred to as a linear forest) of a graph $G$ is a set of vertex-disjoint paths which together contain all the vertices of $G$. An isolated vertex is considered to be a path in this case. The path partition conjecture states that every $n$-vertices $d$-regular graph has a path partition with at most $\frac{n}{d+1}$ paths. The conjecture has been proved for all $d<6$. We prove the conjecture for $d=6$.
An internal or friendly partition of a graph is a partition of the vertex set into two nonempty sets so that every vertex has at least as many neighbours in its own class as in the other one. It has been shown that apart from finitely many counterexamples, every 3, 4 or 6-regular graph has an internal partition. In this note we focus on the $5$-regular case and show that among the subgraphs of minimum degree at least $3$, there are some which have small intersection. We also discuss the existence of internal partitions in some families of Cayley graphs, notably we determine all $5$-regular Abe…
We present results on partitioning the vertices of $2$-edge-colored graphs into monochromatic paths and cycles. We prove asymptotically the two-color case of a conjecture of Sárközy: the vertex set of every $2$-edge-colored graph can be partitioned into at most $2α(G)$ monochromatic cycles, where $α(G)$ denotes the independence number of $G$. Another direction, emerged recently from a conjecture of Schelp, is to consider colorings of graphs with given minimum degree. We prove that apart from $o(|V(G)|)$ vertices, the vertex set of any $2$-edge-colored graph $G$ with minimum degree at least $(1…
Given a graph $G$ and a non trivial partition $(V_1,V_2)$ of its vertex-set, the satisfaction of a vertex $v\in V_i$ is the ratio between the size of it's closed neighborhood in $V_i$ and the size of its closed neighborhood in $G$. The worst ratio over all the vertices defines the quality of the partition. We define $q(G)$ the degree ratio of a graph as the maximum of the worst ratio over all the non trivial partitions. We give bounds and exact values of $q(G)$ for some classes of graphs. We also show some complexity results for the associated optimization or decision problems.
We study Hall-Littlewood polynomials using an integrable lattice model of $t$-deformed bosons. Working with row-to-row transfer matrices, we review the construction of Hall-Littlewood polynomials (of the $A_n$ root system) within the framework of this model. Introducing appropriate double-row transfer matrices, we extend this formalism to Hall-Littlewood polynomials based on the $BC_n$ root system, and obtain a new combinatorial formula for them. We then apply our methods to prove a series of refined Cauchy and Littlewood identities involving Hall-Littlewood polynomials. The last two of these …
The power graph of a group is the simple graph whose vertices are the group elements and two vertices are adjacent whenever one of them is a positive power of the other. We characterize the finite nilpotent groups whose power graphs have equal vertex connectivity and minimum degree.
We give a new approach to handling hypergraph regularity. This approach allows for vertex-by-vertex embedding into regular partitions of hypergraphs, and generalises to regular partitions of sparse hypergraphs. We also prove a corresponding sparse hypergraph regularity lemma.
A graph composition is a partition of the vertex set such that each member of the partition induces a connected sub- graph, and the composition number of a graph is the number of possible graph compositions. A partition of a set S of consecutive labelled vertices is said to have a minimax vertex v in S if the label of v is the smallest label in the set of all maximum labels over all members of the partition. This paper exhibits a recursive formula for the composition number of a certain class of graphs and estab- lishes a connection between the composition numbers of this class of graphs and t…
A perfect code in a graph $Γ$ is a subset $C$ of $V(Γ)$ such that no two vertices in $C$ are adjacent and every vertex in $V(Γ)\setminus C$ is adjacent to exactly one vertex in $C$. Let $G$ be a finite group and $C$ a subset of $G$. Then $C$ is said to be a perfect code of $G$ if there exists a Cayley graph of $G$ admiting $C$ as a perfect code. It is proved that a subgroup $H$ of $G$ is a perfect code of $G$ if and only if a Sylow $2$-subgroup of $H$ is a perfect code of $G$. This result provides a way to simplify the study of subgroup perfect codes of general groups to the study of subgroup …
Arboricity is a graph parameter akin to chromatic number, in that it seeks to partition the vertices into the smallest number of sparse subgraphs. Where for the chromatic number we are partitioning the vertices into independent sets, for the arboricity we want to partition the vertices into cycle-free subsets (i.e., forests). Arboricity is NP-hard in general, and our focus is on the arboricity of cographs. For arboricity two, we obtain the complete list of minimal cograph obstructions. These minimal obstructions do generalize to higher arboricities; however, we no longer have a complete list, …
Covering problems belong to the foundation of graph theory. There are several types of covering problems in graph theory such as covering the vertex set by stars (domination problem), covering the vertex set by cliques (clique covering problem), covering the vertex set by independent sets (coloring problem), and covering the vertex set by paths or cycles. A similar concept which is partitioning problem is also equally important. Lately research in graph theory has produced unprecedented growth because of its various application in engineering and science. The covering and partitioning problem …
Magnant and Martin conjectured that the vertex set of any $d$-regular graph $G$ on $n$ vertices can be partitioned into $n / (d+1)$ paths (there exists a simple construction showing that this bound would be best possible). We prove this conjecture when $d = Ω(n)$, improving a result of Han, who showed that in this range almost all vertices of $G$ can be covered by $n / (d+1) + 1$ vertex-disjoint paths. In fact, our proof gives a partition of $V(G)$ into cycles. We also show that, if $d = Ω(n)$ and $G$ is bipartite, then $V(G)$ can be partitioned into $n / (2d)$ paths (this bound in tight for b…
We define Donaldson-Thomas invariants of Calabi-Yau orbifolds and we develop a topological vertex formalism for computing them. The basic combinatorial object is the orbifold vertex, a generating function for the number of 3D partitions asymptotic to three given 2D partitions and colored by representations of a finite Abelian group G acting on C^3. In the case where G=Z_n acting on C^3 with transverse A_{n-1} quotient singularities, we give an explicit formula for the vertex in terms of Schur functions. We discuss applications of our formalism to the Donaldson-Thomas Crepant Resolution Conject…
For each integer k >= 2, we determine a sharp bound on mad(G) such that V(G) can be partitioned into sets I and F_k, where I is an independent set and G[F_k] is a forest in which each component has at most k vertices. For each k we construct an infinite family of examples showing our result is best possible. Our results imply that every planar graph G of girth at least 9 (resp. 8, 7) has a partition of V(G) into an independent set I and a set F such that G[F] is a forest with each component of order at most 3 (resp. 4, 6). Hendrey, Norin, and Wood asked for the largest function g(a,b) such tha…
We show that any complete $k$-partite graph $G$ on $n$ vertices, with $k \ge 3$, whose edges are two-coloured, can be covered with two vertex-disjoint monochromatic paths of distinct colours. We prove this under the necessary assumption that the largest partition class of $G$ contains at most $n/2$ vertices. This extends known results for complete and complete bipartite graphs. Secondly, we show that in the same situation, all but $o(n)$ vertices of the graph can be covered with two vertex-disjoint monochromatic cycles of distinct colours, if colourings close to a split colouring are excluded.…
Vertex colouring is a well-known problem in combinatorial optimisation, whose alternative integer programming formulations have recently attracted considerable attention. This paper briefly surveys seven known formulations of vertex colouring and introduces a formulation of vertex colouring using a suitable clique partition of the graph. This formulation is applicable in timetabling applications, where such a clique partition of the conflict graph is given implicitly. In contrast with some alternatives, the presented formulation can also be easily extended to accommodate complex performance in…
