In this paper, we introduce and analyze a new switch operator for the six-vertex model. This operator, derived from the Yang-Baxter equation, allows us to express the partition function with arbitrary boundaries in terms of a base case with domain wall boundary conditions. As an application, we derive explicit formulas for the factorial Schur functions and their generalizations. Our results provide new insights into the relationship between boundary conditions and partition functions in the six-vertex model.
For a particular set of Boltzmann weights and a particular boundary condition for the six vertex model in statistical mechanics, we compute explicitly the partition function and show it to be equal to a factorial Schur function, giving a new proof of a theorem of Lascoux.
A celebrated unresolved conjecture of Erdős and Hajnal states that for every undirected graph $H$ there exists $ε(H)>0$ such that every undirected graph on $n$ vertices that does not contain $H$ as an induced subgraph contains a clique or stable set of size at least $n^{ε(H)}$. The conjecture has a directed equivalent version stating that for every tournament $H$ there exists $ε(H)>0$ such that every $H$-free $n$-vertex tournament $T$ contains a transitive subtournament of order at least $n^{ε(H)}$. We say that a tournament is \textit{prime} if it does not have nontrivial homogeneous sets. So …
In this paper, we explain a connection between a family of free-fermionic six-vertex models and a discrete time evolution operator on one-dimensional Fermionic Fock space. The family of ice models generalize those with domain wall boundary, and we focus on two sets of Boltzmann weights whose partition functions were previously shown to generalize a generating function identity of Tokuyama. We produce associated Hamiltonians that recover these Boltzmann weights, and furthermore calculate the partition functions using commutation relations and elementary combinatorics. We give an expression for …
We prove a positivity theorem for a certain family of operators defined in terms of the stochastic six-vertex model. We explore connections of this result with other vertex models and $t$-deformed Schensted insertions.
We apply the Tangent Method of Colomo and Sportiello to predict the arctic curves of the Six Vertex model with reflecting (U-turn) boundary and of the related Twenty Vertex model with suitable domain wall boundary conditions on a quadrangle, both in their Disordered phase.
An explicit expression for the spatial curve separating the region of ferroelectric order (`frozen' zone) from the disordered one (`temperate' zone) in the six-vertex model with domain wall boundary conditions in its anti-ferroelectric regime is obtained.
We revisit the problem of determining the Arctic curve in the six-vertex model with domain wall boundary conditions. We describe an alternative method, by which we recover the previously conjectured analytic expression in the square domain. We adapt the method to work for a large class of domains, and for other models exhibiting limit shape phenomena. We study in detail some examples, and derive, in particular, the Arctic curve of the six-vertex model in a triangoloid domain at the ice-point.
The diamond is the graph obtained by removing an edge from the complete graph on 4 vertices. A graph is ($P_6$, diamond)-free if it contains no induced subgraph isomorphic to a six-vertex path or a diamond. In this paper we show that the chromatic number of a ($P_6$, diamond)-free graph $G$ is no larger than the maximum of 6 and the clique number of $G$. We do this by reducing the problem to imperfect ($P_6$, diamond)-free graphs via the Strong Perfect Graph Theorem, dividing the imperfect graphs into several cases, and giving a proper colouring for each case. We also show that there is exactl…
We introduce a family of Markov growth processes on discrete height functions defined on the 2-dimensional square lattice. Each height function corresponds to a configuration of the six vertex model on the infinite square lattice. We focus on the stochastic six vertex model corresponding to a particular two-parameter family of weights within the ferroelectric regime. It is believed (and partially proven, see Aggarwal, arXiv:2004.13272) that the stochastic six vertex model displays nontrivial pure (i.e., translation invariant and ergodic) Gibbs states of two types, KPZ and liquid. These phases …
The arctic curve, i.e. the spatial curve separating ordered (or `frozen') and disordered (or `temperate) regions, of the six-vertex model with domain wall boundary conditions is discussed for the root-of-unity vertex weights. In these cases the curve is described by algebraic equations which can be worked out explicitly from the parametric solution for this curve. Some interesting examples are discussed in detail. The upper bound on the maximal degree of the equation in a generic root-of-unity case is obtained.
We consider a fully inhomogeneous stochastic higher spin six vertex model in a quadrant. For this model we derive concise integral representations for multi-point q-moments of the height function and for the q-correlation functions. At least in the case of the step initial condition, our formulas degenerate in appropriate limits to many known formulas of such type for integrable probabilistic systems in the (1+1)d KPZ universality class, including the stochastic six vertex model, ASEP, various q-TASEPs, and associated zero range processes. Our arguments are largely based on properties of a fam…
The six-vertex model, or the square ice model, with domain wall boundary conditions (DWBC) has been introduced and solved for finite $N$ by Korepin and Izergin. The solution is based on the Yang-Baxter equations and it represents the free energy in terms of an $N\times N$ Hankel determinant. Paul Zinn-Justin observed that the Izergin-Korepin formula can be re-expressed in terms of the partition function of a random matrix model with a nonpolynomial interaction. We use this observation to obtain the large $N$ asymptotics of the six-vertex model with DWBC in the disordered phase. The solution is…
We propose an (essentially combinatorial) approach to the correlation functions of the domain wall six vertex model. We reproduce the boundary 1-point function determinant expression of Bogoliubov, Pronko and Zvonarev, then use that as a building block to obtain analogous expressions for boundary 2-point functions. The latter can be used, at least in principle, to express more general boundary (and bulk) correlation functions as sums over (products of) determinants.
We consider the six-vertex model on an $N \times N$ square lattice with the domain wall boundary conditions. Boundary one-point correlation functions of the model are expressed as determinants of $N\times N$ matrices, generalizing the known result for the partition function. In the free fermion case the explicit answers are obtained. The introduced correlation functions are closely related to the problem of enumeration of alternating sign matrices and domino tilings.
We elucidate the structure of $(P_6,C_4)$-free graphs by showing that every such graph either has a clique cutset, or a universal vertex, or belongs to several special classes of graphs. Using this result, we show that for any $(P_6,C_4)$-free graph $G$, $\lceil\frac{5ω(G)}{4}\rceil$ and $\lceil\frac{Δ(G) + ω(G) +1}{2}\rceil$ are tight upper bounds for the chromatic number of $G$. Moreover, our structural results imply that every ($P_6$,$C_4$)-free graph with no clique cutset has bounded clique-width, and thus the existence of a polynomial-time algorithm that computes the chromatic number (or …
At the free-fermion point, the six-vertex model with domain wall boundary conditions (DWBC) can be related to the Aztec diamond, a domino tiling problem. We study the mapping on the level of complete statistics for general domains and boundary conditions. This is obtained by associating to both models a set of non-intersecting lines in the Lindstroem-Gessel-Viennot (LGV) scheme. One of the consequence for DWBC is that the boundaries of the ordered phases are described by the Airy process in the thermodynamic limit.
We consider the six-vertex model in an L-shaped domain of the square lattice, with domain wall boundary conditions. For free-fermion vertex weights the partition function can be expressed in terms of some Hankel determinant, or equivalently as a Coulomb gas with discrete measure and a non-polynomial potential with two hard walls. We use Coulomb gas methods to study the partition function in the thermodynamic limit. We obtain the free energy of the six-vertex model as a function of the parameters describing the geometry of the scaled L-shaped domain. Under variations of these parameters the sys…
We address the six vertex model on a random lattice, which in combinatorial terms corresponds to the enumeration of weighted 4-valent planar maps equipped with an Eulerian orientation. This problem was exactly, albeit non-rigorously solved by Ivan Kostov in 2000 using matrix integral techniques. We convert Kostov's work to a combinatorial argument involving functional equations coming from recursive decompositions of the maps, which we solve rigorously using complex analysis. We then investigate modular properties of the solution, which lead to simplifications in certain special cases. In part…
We prove two identities of Hall-Littlewood polynomials, which appeared recently in a paper by two of the authors. We also conjecture, and in some cases prove, new identities which relate infinite sums of symmetric polynomials and partition functions associated with symmetry classes of alternating sign matrices. These identities generalize those already found in our earlier paper, via the introduction of additional parameters. The left hand side of each of our identities is a simple refinement of a relevant Cauchy or Littlewood identity. The right hand side of each identity is (one of the two f…
We prove that the joint distribution of the values of the height function for the stochastic six vertex model in a quadrant along a down-right path coincides with that for the lengths of the first columns of partitions distributed according to certain Hall-Littlewood processes. In the limit when one of the quadrant axes becomes continuous, we also show that the two-dimensional random field of the height function values has the same distribution as the lengths of the first columns of partitions from certain ascending Hall-Littlewood processes evolving under a Robinson-Schensted-Knuth type Marko…
We construct a family of infinite-dimensional positive sub-coalgebras within the Grothendieck ring of Hecke algebras, when viewed as a Hopf algebra with respect to the induction and restriction functor. These sub-coalgebras have as structure constants the 3-point genus zero Gromov-Witten invariants of Grassmannians and are spanned by what we call cylindric Hecke characters, a particular set of virtual characters for whose computation we give several explicit combinatorial formulae. One of these expressions is a generalisation of Ram's formula for irreducible Hecke characters and uses cylindric…
We present two new connections between the inhomogeneous stochastic higher spin six vertex model in a quadrant and integrable stochastic systems from the Macdonald processes hierarchy. First, we show how Macdonald $q$-difference operators with $t=0$ (an algebraic tool crucial for studying the corresponding Macdonald processes) can be utilized to get $q$-moments of the height function $\mathfrak{h}$ in the higher spin six vertex model first computed in arXiv:1601.05770 using Bethe ansatz. This result in particular implies that for the vertex model with the step Bernoulli boundary condition, the…
We study Hall-Littlewood polynomials using an integrable lattice model of $t$-deformed bosons. Working with row-to-row transfer matrices, we review the construction of Hall-Littlewood polynomials (of the $A_n$ root system) within the framework of this model. Introducing appropriate double-row transfer matrices, we extend this formalism to Hall-Littlewood polynomials based on the $BC_n$ root system, and obtain a new combinatorial formula for them. We then apply our methods to prove a series of refined Cauchy and Littlewood identities involving Hall-Littlewood polynomials. The last two of these …
