Given a graph $G$ and a non trivial partition $(V_1,V_2)$ of its vertex-set, the satisfaction of a vertex $v\in V_i$ is the ratio between the size of it's closed neighborhood in $V_i$ and the size of its closed neighborhood in $G$. The worst ratio over all the vertices defines the quality of the partition. We define $q(G)$ the degree ratio of a graph as the maximum of the worst ratio over all the non trivial partitions. We give bounds and exact values of $q(G)$ for some classes of graphs. We also show some complexity results for the associated optimization or decision problems.
The degree partition of a simple graph is its degree sequence rearranged in weakly decreasing order. The polytope of degree partitions (respectively, degree sequences) is the convex hull of all degree partitions (respectively, degree sequences) of a fixed length. We think of the degree sequence polytope as the symmetrization of the degree partition polytope and the degree partition polytope as the asymmetric part of the degree sequence polytope. The degree sequence polytope is a well studied object with formulas (generating functions) known for its face numbers, volume, and number of lattice p…
We derive asymptotic formulas for the number of integer partitions with given sums of $j$th powers of the parts for $j$ belonging to a finite, non-empty set $J \subset \mathbb N$. The method we use is based on the `principle of maximum entropy' of Jaynes. This principle leads to an intuitive variational formula for the asymptotics of the logarithm of the number of constrained partitions as the solution to a convex optimization problem over real-valued functions.
An $(n,k)$-Sperner partition system is a collection of partitions of some $n$-set, each into $k$ nonempty classes, such that no class of any partition is a subset of a class of any other. The maximum number of partitions in an $(n,k)$-Sperner partition system is denoted $\mathrm{SP}(n,k)$. In this paper we introduce a new construction for Sperner partition systems and use it to asymptotically determine $\mathrm{SP}(n,k)$ in many cases as $\frac{n}{k}$ becomes large. We also give a slightly improved upper bound for $\mathrm{SP}(n,k)$ and exhibit an infinite family of parameter sets $(n,k)$ for …
The projective degrees of strict partitions of n were computed for all n < 101 and the partitions with maximal projective degree were found for each n. It was observed that maximizing partitions for successive values of n "lie close to each other" in a certain sense. Conjecturing that this holds for larger values of n, the partitions of maximal degree were computed for all n < 221. The results are consistent with a recent conjecture on the limiting shape of the strict partition of maximal projective degree.
In 2007 Matamala proved that if $G$ is a simple graph with maximum degree $Δ\geq 3$ not containing $K_{Δ+1}$ as a subgraph and $s, t$ are positive integers such that $s+t \geq Δ$, then the vertex set of $G$ admits a partition $(S,T)$ such that $G[S]$ is a maximum order $(s-1)$-degenerate subgraph of $G$ and $G[T]$ is a $(t-1)$-degenerate subgraph of $G$. This result extended earlier results obtained by Borodin, by Bollobás and Manvel, by Catlin, by Gerencsér and by Catlin and Lai. In this paper we prove a hypergraph version of this result and extend it to variable degeneracy and to partitions …
In this paper, we prove that every graph with average degree at least $s+t+2$ has a vertex partition into two parts, such that one part has average degree at least $s$, and the other part has average degree at least $t$. This solves a conjecture of Csóka, Lo, Norin, Wu and Yepremyan.
We exactly determine the maximum possible hook length of $(s,t)$-core partitions with $d$-distinct parts when there are finitely many such partitions. Moreover, we provide an algorithm to construct a $d$-distinct $(s,t)$-core partition with this maximum possible hook length.
The (n,k)-star graph is a very important computer modelling. The independent number and chromatic number of a graph are two important parameters in graph theory. However, we did not know the values of this two parameters of the (n,k)-star graph since it was proposed. In [18], Wei et. al. declared that they determined the independent number of the (n,k)-star graph, unfortunately their proof is wrong. This paper generalize their result and present a maximum independent sets partition of (n,k)-star graph. From that we can immediately deduce the exact value of the independent number and chromatic …
In this paper, we show that every $2m$-partition-connected graph $G$ has a bipartite $m$-partition-connected factor $H$ such that for each vertex $v$, $d_H(v)\le \lceil \frac{3}{4}d_G(v)\rceil$. A graph $H$ is said to be $m$-partition-connected, if it contains $m$ edge-disjoint spanning trees. As an application, we conclude that tough enough graphs with appropriate number of vertices have a bipartite $m$-partition-connected factor with maximum degree at most $3m+1$. Finally, we prove that tough enough graphs of order at least $3k$ admit a bipartite connected factor whose degrees lie in the set…
A classical result of Erdős, Gyárfás and Pyber states that any $r$-edge-coloured complete graph has a partition into $O(r^2 \log r)$ monochromatic cycles. Here we determine the minimum degree threshold for this property. More precisely, we show that there exists a constant $c$ such that any $r$-edge-coloured graph on $n$ vertices with minimum degree at least $n/2 + c \cdot r \log n$ has a partition into $O(r^2)$ monochromatic cycles. We also provide constructions showing that the minimum degree condition and the number of cycles are essentially tight.
This article provides structural characterization of simple graphs whose edge-set can be partitioned into maximum matchings. We use Vizing's classification of simple graphs based on edge chromatic index.
Balogh, Barát, Gerbner, Gyárfás, and Sárközy proposed the following conjecture. Let $G$ be a graph on $n$ vertices with minimum degree at least $3n/4$. Then for every $2$-edge-colouring of $G$, the vertex set $V(G)$ may be partitioned into two vertex-disjoint cycles, one of each colour. We prove that this conjecture holds for $n$ large enough, improving approximate results by the aforementioned authors and by DeBiasio and Nelsen.
This paper describes the calculation of the optimal partition parameters such that the girth maximum (m, r) Balanced Tanner Unit lies in family of BTUs specified by them using a series of proved results and thus creates a framework for specifying a search problem for finding the girth maximum (m, r) BTU. Several open questions for girth maximum (m, r) BTU have been raised.
Let ${\cal{F}}=\{F_1,F_2,\ldots\}$ be a sequence of graphs such that $F_n$ is a graph on $n$ vertices with maximum degree at most $Δ$. We show that there exists an absolute constant $C$ such that the vertices of any 2-edge-colored complete graph can be partitioned into at most $2^{CΔ\logΔ}$ vertex disjoint monochromatic copies of graphs from ${\cal{F}}$. If each $F_n$ is bipartite, then we can improve this bound to $2^{C Δ}$; this result is optimal up to the constant $C$.
We define a $(V_1, V_2, \ldots, V_k)$-partition for a given graph $H$ and graphical properties $P_1, P_2, \ldots, P_k$ as a partition where each $V_i$ induces a subgraph of $H$ with property $P_i$. Matamala (2007) extended this result by showing that for any graph $H$ with $Δ(H)=p+q$, there exists a $(V_1, V_2)$-partition of $V(H)$ where $H[V_1]$ is a maximum order $(p-1)$-degenerate induced subgraph and $H[V_2]$ is $(q-1)$-degenerate. Additionally, Catlin and Lai proved that if $Δ(H)\geq 5$, $H$ has a $(V_1, V_2)$-partition such that $H[V_1]$ is a maximum order acyclic induced subgraph, $ω(H[…
This paper considers the degree-diameter problem for extremal and largest known undirected circulant graphs of degree 2 to 9 of arbitrary diameter. As these graphs are vertex transitive it is possible to define their distance partition. The number of vertices in each level of the distance partition is shown to be related to an established upper bound for the order of Abelian Cayley graphs. Furthermore these graphs are all found to have odd girth which is maximal for their diameter. Therefore the type of each vertex in a level may be well-defined by the number of adjacent vertices in the preced…
We prove that if $G$ is a vertex critical graph with $χ(G) \geq Δ(G) + 1 - p \geq 4$ for some $p \in \mathbb{N}$ and $ω(\fancy{H}(G)) \leq \frac{χ(G) + 1}{p + 1} - 2$, then $G = K_{χ(G)}$ or $G = O_5$. Here $\fancy{H}(G)$ is the subgraph of $G$ induced on the vertices of degree at least $χ(G)$. This simplifies and improves the results in the paper of Kostochka, Rabern and Stiebitz \cite{krs_one}.
Let $α_k(λ)$ denote the number of $k$-hooks in a partition $λ$ and let $b(n,k)$ be the maximum value of $α_k(λ)$ among partitions of $n$. Amdeberhan posed a conjecture on the generating function of $b(n,1)$. We give a proof of this conjecture. In general, we obtain a formula that can be used to determine $b(n,k)$. This leads to a generating function formula for $b(n,k)$. We introduce the notion of nearly $k$-triangular partitions. We show that for any $n$, there is a nearly $k$-triangular partition which can be transformed into a partition of $n$ that attains the maximum number of $k$-hooks. T…
Goulden and Jackson first introduced the cut-and-join operator. The cut-and-join is widely used in studying the Hurwitz number and many other topological recursion problems. Mironov, Morosov and Natanzon give a more general construction and call it W-operator W([n]). As a special case, the cut-and-join operator is W([2]). In this paper, we study the structure of W([n]). We prove that W([n]) can be written as the sum of n! terms and each term corresponds uniquely to a permutation in Sn. We also define the degree of each term. We prove that there is a correspondence between the terms of W([n]) w…
Let $D=(V,A)$ be a directed graph of order $n\geq 6$. Let $W$ be a subset of $V$ with $|W|\geq 6$. Suppose that every vertex of $W$ has degree at least $(3n-3)/2$ in $D$. Then for any integer partition $|W|=n_1+n_2$ with $n_1\geq 3$ and $n_2\geq 3$, $D$ contains two disjoint directed cycles $C_1$ and $C_2$ such that $|V(C_1)\cap W|=n_1$ and $|V(C_2)\cap W|=n_2$. We conjecture that for any integer partition $|W|=n_1+n_2+\cdots +n_k$ with $k\geq 3$ and $n_i\geq 3(1\leq i\leq k)$, $D$ contains $k$ disjoint directed cycles $C_1,C_2,\ldots , C_k$ such that $|V(C_i)\cap W|=n_i$ for all $1\leq i\leq …
A topological graph is a graph drawn in the plane. A topological graph is $k$-plane, $k>0$, if each edge is crossed at most $k$ times. We study the problem of partitioning the edges of a $k$-plane graph such that each partite set forms a graph with a simpler structure. While this problem has been studied for $k=1$, we focus on optimal $2$-plane and $3$-plane graphs, which are $2$-plane and $3$-plane graphs with maximum density. We prove the following results. (i) It is not possible to partition the edges of a simple optimal $2$-plane graph into a $1$-plane graph and a forest, while (ii) an edg…
The monochromatic tree partition number of an $r$-edge-colored graph $G$, denoted by $t_r(G)$, is the minimum integer $k$ such that whenever the edges of $G$ are colored with $r$ colors, the vertices of $G$ can be covered by at most $k$ vertex-disjoint monochromatic trees. In general, to determine this number is very difficult. For 2-edge-colored complete multipartite graph, Kaneko, Kano, and Suzuki gave the exact value of $t_2(K(n_1,n_2,...,n_k))$. In this paper, we prove that if $n\geq 3$, and K(n,n) is 3-edge-colored such that every vertex has color degree 3, then $t_3(K(n,n))=3.$
A graph composition is a partition of the vertex set such that each member of the partition induces a connected sub- graph, and the composition number of a graph is the number of possible graph compositions. A partition of a set S of consecutive labelled vertices is said to have a minimax vertex v in S if the label of v is the smallest label in the set of all maximum labels over all members of the partition. This paper exhibits a recursive formula for the composition number of a certain class of graphs and estab- lishes a connection between the composition numbers of this class of graphs and t…
An $(n,k)$-Sperner partition system is a set of partitions of some $n$-set such that each partition has $k$ nonempty parts and no part in any partition is a subset of a part in a different partition. The maximum number of partitions in an $(n,k)$-Sperner partition system is denoted $\mathrm{SP}(n,k)$. In this paper we introduce a new construction for Sperner partition systems based on a division of the ground set into many equal-sized parts. We use this to asymptotically determine $\mathrm{SP}(n,k)$ in many cases where $\frac{n}{k}$ is bounded as $n$ becomes large. Further, we show that this c…
A \emph{tree-partition} of a graph $G$ is a proper partition of its vertex set into `bags', such that identifying the vertices in each bag produces a forest. The \emph{tree-partition-width} of $G$ is the minimum number of vertices in a bag in a tree-partition of $G$. An anonymous referee of the paper by Ding and Oporowski [\emph{J. Graph Theory}, 1995] proved that every graph with tree-width $k\geq3$ and maximum degree $Δ\geq1$ has tree-partition-width at most $24kΔ$. We prove that this bound is within a constant factor of optimal. In particular, for all $k\geq3$ and for all sufficiently large…
Given a sparse undirected graph G with weights on the edges, a k-plex partition of G is a partition of its set of nodes such that each component is a k-plex. A subset of nodes S is a k-plex if the degree of every node in the associated induced subgraph is at least |S|-k. The maximum edge-weight k-plex partitioning (Max-EkPP) problem is to find a k-plex partition with maximum total weight, where the partition's weight is the sum of the weights on the edges in the solution. When k=1, all components in the partition are cliques and the problem becomes the well-known maximum edge-weight clique par…
In 1976, Steinberg conjectured that planar graphs without $4$-cycles and $5$-cycles are $3$-colorable. This conjecture attracted numerous researchers for about 40 years, until it was recently disproved by Cohen-Addad et al. (2017). However, coloring planar graphs with restrictions on cycle lengths is still an active area of research, and the interest in this particular graph class remains. Let $G$ be a planar graph without $4$-cycles and $5$-cycles. For integers $d_1$ and $d_2$ satisfying $d_1+d_2\geq8$ and $d_2\geq d_1\geq 2$, it is known that $V(G)$ can be partitioned into two sets $V_1$ and…
We show that for every l, there exists d_l such that every 3-edge-connected graph with minimum degree d_l can be edge-partitioned into paths of length l (provided that its number of edges is divisible by l). This improves a result asserting that 24-edge-connectivity and high minimum degree provides such a partition. This is best possible as 3-edge-connectivity cannot be replaced by 2-edge connectivity.
For $G=G_{n, 1/2}$, the Erdős--Renyi random graph, let $X_n$ be the random variable representing the number of distinct partitions of $V(G)$ into sets $A_1, \ldots, A_q$ so that the degree of each vertex in $G[A_i]$ is divisible by $q$ for all $i\in[q]$. We prove that if $q\geq 3$ is odd then $X_n\xrightarrow{d}{\mathrm{Po}(1/q!)}$, and if $q \geq 4$ is even then $X_n\xrightarrow{d}{\mathrm{Po}(2^q/q!)}$. More generally, we show that the distribution is still asymptotically Poisson when we require all degrees in $G[A_i]$ to be congruent to $x_i$ modulo $q$ for each $i\in[q]$, where the residue…
A partition of degree $n$ is a decomposition $n=i_1+i_2+\dots+i_q$, where ${i_1,i_2,\dots,i_q}$ are positive integers called the parts of the partition. Let $λ>0$ be an integer. The partition is said to be a $λ$--partition if $i_{a+1}-i_a\geqslant λ$ for all $a$ such that $1\leqslant a<q$. The main result of this note are combinatorial formulas, which express the quantity of $1$-partitions of a given degree in terms of the $λ$--partitions of the same degree, where $λ=2$ or $λ=3$, some special parts of which are marked depending on $λ$. The presented proofs of both formulas are bijective. It is…
We develop a theory of k-partitions of the set of infinite words recognizable by classes of finite automata. The theory enables to complete proofs of existing results about topological classifications of the (aperiodic) omega-regular k-partitions and provides tools for dealing with other similar questions. In particular, we characterize the structure of Wadge degrees of (aperiodic) omega-regular $k$-partitions, prove the decidability of many related problems, and discuss their complexity.
In this paper, we show that every planar graph without $4$-cycles and $6$-cycles has a partition of its vertex set into two sets, where one set induces a forest, and the other induces a forest with maximum degree at most $2$ (equivalently, a disjoint union of paths). Note that we can partition the vertex set of a forest into two independent sets. However, a pair of independent sets combined may not induce a forest. Thus our result extends the result of Wang and Xu (2013) stating that the vertex set of every planar graph without $4$-cycles and $6$-cycles can be partitioned into three sets, wher…
In 1996, Michael Stiebitz proved that if $G$ is a simple graph with $δ(G)\geq s+t+1$ and $s,t\in \mathbb{Z}_{\geq 0}$, then $V(G)$ can be partitioned into two sets $A$ and $B$ such that $δ(G[A])\geq s$ and $δ(G[B])\geq t$. In 2016, Amir Ban proved a similar result for weighted graphs. Let $G$ be a simple graph with at least two vertices, let $w:E(G) \to \mathbb{r}_{>0}$ be a weight function, let $s,t \in \mathbb{R}_{\geq 0}$, and let $W=\max_{e\in E(G)} w(e)$. If $δ(G)\geq s+t+2W$, then $V(G)$ can be partitioned into two sets $A$ and $B$ such that $δ(G[A])\geq s$ and $δ(G[B])\geq t$. This moti…
An $({\cal I},{\cal F}_d)$-partition of a graph is a partition of the vertices of the graph into two sets $I$ and $F$, such that $I$ is an independent set and $F$ induces a forest of maximum degree at most $d$. We show that for all $M<3$ and $d \ge \frac{2}{3-M} - 2$, if a graph has maximum average degree less than $M$, then it has an $({\cal I},{\cal F}_d)$-partition. Additionally, we prove that for all $\frac{8}{3} \le M < 3$ and $d \ge \frac{1}{3-M}$, if a graph has maximum average degree less than $M$ then it has an $({\cal I},{\cal F}_d)$-partition.
For each infinite cardinal $κ$ and each graph $G=(V,E)$, we say that a partition $π:V\rightarrow \left\{ 0,1\right\} $ is $κ$-unfriendly if, for each $x\in V$, $\left| \left\{ y\in V\mid \left\{ x,y\right\} \in E\text{ and }π(y)\neq π(x)\right\} \right| $ is $\geq \left| \left\{ y\in V\mid \left\{ x,y\right\} \in E\text{ and }π(y)=π(x)\right\} \right| $ or $\geq κ$; $π$ is unfriendly if the first property is true for each $x\in V$. Some uncountable graphs of infinite minimum degree without unfriendly partition have been constructed by S. Shelah and E.C. Milner, but it is not presently known if…
This article provides sharp bounds for the maximum number of edges possible in a simple graph with restricted values of two of the three parameters, namely, maxi- mum matching size, independence number and maximum degree. We also construct extremal graphs that achieve the edge bounds in all cases. We further establish uniqueness of these extremal graphs whenever they are unique.
We prove a general lemma about partitioning the vertex set of a graph into subgraphs of bounded degree. This lemma extends a sequence of results of Lovász, Catlin, Kostochka and Rabern.
We prove that any graph on $n$ vertices with max degree $d$ has at most $q{d+1 \choose 3}+{r \choose 3}$ triangles, where $n = q(d+1)+r$, $0 \le r \le d$. This resolves a conjecture of Gan-Loh-Sudakov.
An $({\cal F},{\cal F}_d)$-partition of a graph is a vertex-partition into two sets $F$ and $F_d$ such that the graph induced by $F$ is a forest and the one induced by $F_d$ is a forest with maximum degree at most $d$. We prove that every triangle-free planar graph admits an $({\cal F},{\cal F}_5)$-partition. Moreover we show that if for some integer $d$ there exists a triangle-free planar graph that does not admit an $({\cal F},{\cal F}_d)$-partition, then it is an NP-complete problem to decide whether a triangle-free planar graph admits such a partition.
In this paper, we consider the problem of computing the entire sequence of the maximum degree of minors of a block-structured symbolic matrix (a generic partitioned polynomial matrix) $A = (A_{αβ} x_{αβ} t^{d_{αβ}})$, where $A_{αβ}$ is a $2 \times 2$ matrix over a field $\mathbf{F}$, $x_{αβ}$ is an indeterminate, and $d_{αβ}$ is an integer for $α= 1,2,\dots, μ$ and $β= 1,2,\dots,ν$, and $t$ is an additional indeterminate. This problem can be viewed as an algebraic generalization of the maximum weight bipartite matching problem. The main result of this paper is a combinatorial $O(μν\min\{μ, ν\}…
In this paper we determine all the bipartite graphs with the maximum sum of squares of degrees among the ones with a given number of vertices and edges.
