A comparative study of the effect of Fe and Ni doping on the bismuth based perovskite La0.6Bi0.4MnO3.1, a projected spintronics magnetic semiconductor has been carried out. The doped systems show an expressive change in magnetic ordering temperature. However, the shifts in ferromagnetic transition (TC) of these doped phases are in opposite direction with respect to the parent phase TC of 115 K. The Ni-doped phase shows an increase in TC ~200 K, whereas the Fe-doped phase exhibits a downward shift to TC~95 K. Moreover, the Fe-doped is hard-type whereas the Ni-doped compound is soft-type ferromagnet. It is observed that the materials are semiconducting in the ferromagnetic phase with activation energies of 77 & 82 meV for Fe & Ni-doped phases respectively. In the presence of external magnetic field of 7 Tesla, they exhibit minor changes in the resistivity behaviours and the maximum isothermal magnetoresistance is around -20 % at 125 K for the Ni-phase. The results are explained on the basis of electronic phase separation and competing ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic interactions between the various mixed valence cations.
Angular-dependent channeling Rutherford Backscattering Spectroscopy (c-RBS) has been used to quantify the fraction of Cr atoms on substitutional, interstitial, and random sites in epitaxial Ga1-xCrxN films grown by reactive molecular-beam epitaxy. The morphology of these films and correlation with their magnetic properties has been investigated. Films grown at temperatures below ~ 750oC have up to 90% of Cr occupying substitutional sites. Post-growth annealing at 825oC results in a systematic drop in the fraction of substitutional Cr as well as a fall off in the ferromagnetic signal. The roles…
Ferromagnetic insulator Pr0.8Ca0.2Mn1-yCoyO3 (0 <= y <= 0.7) thin films were epitaxially grown on (LaAlO3)0.3-(SrAl0.5Ta0.5O3)0.7 (100) substrates by pulsed laser deposition. To probe the ferromagnetic insulator state of hole-doped manganites, the Co content dependences of the structural, magnetic, and transport properties were studied. Variation of lattice constant by the substitution of Co ions is well reproduced considering that divalent and trivalent Co ions substitute for Mn ions at the perovskite B-sites. For 0 <= y <= 0.3, the Curie temperature, saturation magnetization, and magnetoresi…
Crystallographic and magnetic properties of Fe5PB2, Fe4CoPB2, Fe4MnPB2, Fe5SiB2, Fe4CoSiB2, and Fe4MnSiB2 are reported. All adopt the tetragonal Cr5B3 structure-type and are ferromagnetic at room temperature with easy axis of magnetization along the c-axis. The spin reorientation in Fe5SiB2 is observed as an anomaly in the magnetization near 170 K, and is suppressed by substitution of Co or Mn for Fe. The silicides are found to generally have larger magnetic moments than the phosphides, but the data suggests smaller magnetic anisotropy in the silicides. Cobalt substitution reduces the Curie te…
We show that minimal disturbance to the robust charge ordered Pr(0.5)Ca(0.5)MnO(3) by 2.5% Al substitution on Mn-site drives the system towards ferromagnetic ground state. The history-dependent coexisting phases observed are explained as an outcome of a hindered first order transition with glass like arrest of kinetics resulting in irreversibility. Consistent with a simple phase diagram having ferromagnetic ground state, it is experimentally shown that these coexisting phases are far from the equilibrium.
We report the effect of La-substitution on the magnetic and magnetotransport properties of Brownmillerite-like bilayered compounds Ca2.5-xLaxSr0.5GaMn2O8 (x = 0, 0.05, 0.075, and 0.1) by using dc-magnetization, resistivity and magnetoresistance techniques. The Rietveld analysis of the room temperature x-ray diffraction patterns confirms no observable change of average crystal structure with the La-substitution. Both magnetic and magnetotransport properties are found to be very sensitive to the La-substitution. Interestingly, the La-substituted compounds show ferromagnetic-like behavior (due to…
We use density-functional theoretical methods to examine the recent prediction, based on a mean-field solution of the Zener model, that diamond doped by Mn (with spin S=5/2) would be a dilute magnetic semiconductor that remains ferromagnetic well above room temperature. Our findings suggest this to be unlikely, for four reasons: (1) substitutional Mn in diamond has a low-spin S=1/2 ground state; (2) the substitutional site is energetically unfavorable relative to the much larger "divacancy" site; 3) Mn in the divacancy site is an acceptor, but with only hyperdeep levels, and hence the holes ar…
We present a theory of interstitial Mn in Mn-doped ferromagnetic semiconductors. Using density-functional theory, we show that under the non-equilibrium conditions of growth, interstitial Mn is easily formed near the surface by a simple low-energy adsorption pathway. In GaAs, isolated interstitial Mn is an electron donor, each compensating two substitutional Mn acceptors. Within an impurity-band model, partial compensation promotes ferromagnetic order below the metal-insulator transition, with the highest Curie temperature occurring for 0.5 holes per substitutional Mn.
We have synthesized Ga1-xMnxAs1-yPy and Ga1-xMnxP1-yNy by the combination of ion implantation and pulsed-laser melting. We find that the incorporation of isovalent impurities with smaller atomic radii leads to a realignment of the magnetic easy axis in Ga1-xMnxP1-yNy/GaP and Ga1-xMnxAs1-yPy/GaAs thin films from in-plane to out-of-plane. This tensile-strain-induced magnetic anisotropy is reminiscent of that observed in Ga1-xMnxAs grown on larger lattice constant (In,Ga)As buffer layers indicating that the role of strain in determining magnetic anisotropy is fundamental to III-Mn-V materials. In…
In this work, a systematic ab initio study of the influence of doping on electronic structure and local magnetic moments of ferromagnetic MnAs has been carried out. The majority of the considered substitution elements, potentially suitable for modification of MnAs as working material of magnetic refrigerators is shown to result in reduction of the ferromagnetic moment. But there are variants of anionic substitution (for example, substitution of As for S and Se) when the magnetic moment grows.
The pressure- and anion-dependent electronic structure of EuX (X=Te, Se, S, O) monochalcogenides is probed with element- and orbital-specific X-ray absorption spectroscopy in a diamond anvil cell. An isotropic lattice contraction enhances the ferromagnetic ordering temperature by inducing mixing of Eu 4{\it f} and 5{\it d} electronic orbitals. Anion substitution (Te $\to$ O) enhances competing exchange pathways through spin-polarized anion {\it p} states, counteracting the effect of the concomitant lattice contraction. The results have strong implications for efforts aimed at enhancing FM exch…
Restructuring disorder: Transformation from the antiferromagnetic order in Fe2VSi to the ferromagnetic state in FeRuVSi by substitution of a non-magnetic element
Using a two-orbital model and Monte Carlo simulations, we investigate the effect of nonmagnetic B-site substitution on half-doped CE-type manganites. The lattice defects induced by this substitution destabilize the CE phase, which transforms into (1) the ferromagnetic (FM) metallic competing state, or (2) a regime with short-range FM clusters, or (3) a spin-glass state, depending on couplings and on the valence of the B-site substitution. While a C-type antiferromagnetic state is usually associated with an average $e_{\rm g}$ charge density less than 0.5, the nonmagnetic B-site substitution th…
The discovery of ferromagnetism in Mn doped GaAs [1] has ignited interest in the development of semiconductor technologies based on electron spin and has led to several proof-of-concept spintronic devices [2-4]. A major hurdle for realistic applications of (Ga,Mn)As, or other dilute magnetic semiconductors, remains their below room-temperature ferromagnetic transition temperature. Enhancing ferromagnetism in semiconductors requires understanding the mechanisms for interaction between magnetic dopants, such as Mn, and identifying the circumstances in which ferromagnetic interactions are maximiz…
We have investigated the magnetic properties of a GaN/Ga1-xMnxN (x = 0.1) digital ferromagnetic heterostructure (DFH) showing ferromagnetic behavior using soft x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and x-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD). The Mn L2,3-edge XAS spectra were similar to those of Ga1-xMnxN random alloy thin films, indicating a substitutional doping of high concentration Mn into GaN. From the XMCD measurements, it was revealed that paramagnetic and ferromagnetic Mn atoms coexisted in the Ga1-xMnxN digital layers. The ferromagnetic moment per Mn atom estimated from XMCD agreed wel…
By using the full potential linear augmented plane wave (FP-LAPW) method and full potential local orbital minimum basis (FP-LOMB) method within generalized gradient approximation (GGA), we studied the electronic structures and magnetic properties of nickel and chromium single dopants in polytypes of silicon carbide (SiC). The magnetic phases of defects are found to be strongly dependent on the external stress on the supercell. In 3C-SiC, the Ni single dopant exhibits an anti-ferromagnetic (AFM) to ferromagnetic (FM) transition at a moderate compressive and tensile hydrostatic strain in Si-sub …
The substitution of cobalt and nickel for manganese in the perovskite manganate LaBiMn2O6+d; has been realized, leading to the perovskites LaBiMn2-x(M)xO6+d, with M = Co, Ni and x =0-2/3. In contrast to the literature those phases are found to be orthorhombic with Pnma symmetry. More importantly, it is shown that ferromagnetism is enhanced, TC being increased from 80 K for the parent compound (x = 0) to 97 K for Ni-phase, and to 130 K for the Co-phase. Moreover, a strong competition between ferromagnetism and a glassy-ferromagnetic state in the case of nickel or a spin-glass behaviour in the c…
We have studied the effect of Fe substitution on magnetic and magnetocaloric properties in La0.7Sr0.3Mn1-xFexO3 (x = 0.05, 0.07, 0.10, 0.15, and 0.20) over a wide temperature range (T = 10-400 K). It is shown that substitution by Fe gradually decreases the ferromagnetic Curie temperature (Tc) and saturation magnetization up to x = 0.15 but a dramatic change occurs for x = 0.2. The x = 0.2 sample can be considered as a phase separated compound in which both short-range ordered ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic phases coexist. The magnetic entropy change (DSm) was estimated from isothermal mag…
Using first principles calculations as based on density functional theory, we propose a class of so far unexplored diluted ferromagnetic semiconductors and half-metals. Here, we study the electronic properties of recently synthesized $ 4d $ and $ 5d $ transition metal dinitrides. In particular, we address Mn- and Fe-substitution in PtN$_2$ and PdN$_2$. Structural relaxation shows that the resulting ordered compounds, Pt$_{0.75}$(Mn,Fe)$_{0.25}$N$_2$ and Pd$_{0.75}$(Mn,Fe)$_{0.25}$N$_2$, maintain the cubic crystal symmetry of the parent compounds. On substitution, all compounds exhibit long-ran…
A partial substitution of Sm by Ce can have drastic effects on the magnetic performance, because it will introduce strain in the structure and breaks the lattice symmetry in a way that enhances the contribution of the Co atoms to magnetocrystalline anisotropy. However, Ce substitutions, which are benefit to improve the magnetocrystalline anisotropy, are detrimental to enhance the Curie temperature (TC). With the requirements of wide operating temperature range of magnetic devices, it is important to quantitatively explore the relationship between the TC and ferromagnetic exchange energy. In th…
We study the electronic and magnetic properties of the quaternary AuMnSn$_{1-x}$Sb$_{x}$ Heusler alloys using first principles calculations. We determine their magnetic phase diagram and we show that they present a phase transition from a ferromagnetic to an antiferromagnetic state with increasing Sb concentration. For large Sb concentrations the antiferromagnetic superexchange coupling dominates over the ferromagnetic RKKY-like exchange mechanism. This behavior is similar to the one demonstrated by the isovalent Ni$_{1-x}$Cu$_x$MnSb alloy studied recently by the authors [I. Galanakis et al, P…
First principles density functional theory based calculations have been carried out to predict the effects of Mn replacement by Fe and Cr on electronic as well as magnetic properties of Pt$_{2}$MnGa as well as Ni$_{2}$MnGa. All the materials studied here are predicted to have conventional Heusler alloy structure in their ground state and they are found to be electronically stable on the basis of their respective formation energy. The replacement of Mn by Fe leads to a ferromagnetic ground state whereas in case of Mn replacement by Cr an {\it intra-sublattice} anti-ferromagnetic configuration h…
Using ammonia as nitrogen source for molecular beam epitaxy, the GaN-based diluted magnetic semiconductor Ga1-xMnxN is successfully grown with Mn concentration up to x~6.8% and with p-type conductivity. The films have wurtzite structure with substitutional Mn on Ga site in GaN. Magnetization measurements revealed that Ga1-xMnxN is ferromagnetic at temperatures higher than room temperature. The ferromagnetic-paramagnetic transition temperature, Tc, depends on the Mn concentration of the film. At low temperatures, the magnetization increases with increasing of magnetic field, implying that a par…
The magnetic properties of Mn, Co and Ni substituted Fe4N are calculated from first principles theory. It is found that the generalized gradient approximation reproduces with good accuracy the magnetic moment and equilibrium volume for the parent Fe4N structure, with the atomic moment largest for the Fe atom furthest away from the N atom (Fe I site), approaching a value of 3 muB/atom, whereas the Fe atom closer to the N atom (Fe II site) has a moment closer to that of bcc Fe. Substitution of Fe for Mn, Co or Ni, shows an intricate behavior in which the Mn substitution clearly favors the Fe II …
EuCd$_2$As$_2$ is an antiferromagnetic semimetal, that can host non-trivial topological properties, depending upon its magnetic state and excitations. Here, we report the synthesis and characterization of Eu(Cd$_{1-x}$Ag$_x$)$_2$As$_2$ and Eu$_{1-y}$Na$_y$Cd$_2$As$_2$, and study the evolution and nature of magnetic order with doping. Temperature-substitution phase diagrams are constructed from the electrical resistance and magnetic susceptibility data. We observe a splitting of the magnetic transition into two different transitions, and the gradual increase in one of the transition temperature…
In the recent publication, Phys. Rev. B 102, 144420 (2020), Cabrera-Baez et al. present a study of the effects of Cd-substitution for Zn in the ferromagnetic compound GdFe2Zn20. As part of this paper, they claim that for GdFe2Zn18.6Cd1.4 the effective moment of Gd is reduced by 25% and the saturated moment of Gd is reduced by over 40%. We regrew representative members of the GdFe2Zn(20-x)Cdx series and did not find any such reductions. In addition, we measured several crystals from the growth batch that was used by Cabrera-Baez et al. and did not see such reductions. Although there is a modest…
Formation of MnAs quantum dots in a regular ring-like distribution has been found on MBE-grown (GaMn)As surfaces after low-temperature annealing under As capping. The Mn was supplied by out-diffusing Mn interstitials from (GaMn)As. With 5 at% substitutional Mn the quantum dots appeared for (GaMn)As layers thicker than 500 A. For thinner layers the Mn-rich surfaces, presumably monolayer thick MnAs, are smooth and well-ordered (1x2), and are well suited for continued epitaxial growth.
Measurements of the low frequency electrical noise in the ferromagnetic semiconductor (Ga,Mn)As reveal an enhanced integrated noise at low temperature. For moderate localization, we find a 1/f normalized power spectrum density over the entire range of temperatures studied (4.2K < T < 70K). However, for stronger localization and a high density of Mn interstitials, we observe Lorentzian noise spectra accompanied by random telegraph noise. Magnetic field dependence and annealing studies suggest that interstitial Mn defects couple with substitutional Mn atoms to form nanoscale magnetic clusters ch…
The effect of Cr substitution in a SrRuO3 epitaxial thin film on SrTiO3 substrate was investigated by measuring the magnetic and transport properties and the electronic states. The ferromagnetic transition temperature of the SrRu0.9Cr0.1O3 film (166 K) was higher than that of the SrRuO3 film (147 K). Resonant photoemission spectroscopy experimentally revealed that the Cr 3dt2g orbital is hybridized with the Ru 4dt2g orbital in the SrRu0.9Cr0.1O3 film, supporting the assumption that the enhancement of the ferromagnetic transition temperature through Cr substitution stems from the widening of en…
La$_{0.67}$Sr$_{0.33}$Mn$_{1-x}$Ti$_x$O$_{3}$ ($0 \le x \le 0.20$) polycrystalline materials are prepared by employing lower annealing temperature compared to the temperatures reported for the materials of the same composition. The transport and magnetic properties of these materials are significantly different from those compounds prepared at higher annealing temperature. Samples with $x < 0.10$, show metal-insulator transition and those with $x \ge 0.10$ exhibit insulating behavior over the entire temperature range investigated. A gradual transition occurs from ferromagnetic-metallic state t…
The electronic and magnetic properties of transition-metal doped $β$-Ge3N4 have been studied using first-principles calculations. The results show that the substitutional transition-metal impurities tend to cluster. The V and Cr doped Ge3N4 compounds are ferromagnetic semiconductors, while the compounds with Mn and Fe doping show a half-metallic ferromagnetic character.
Cementite-type carbides are of interest for magnetocaloric applications owing to their temperature- or pressure-induced magnetic phase transition. Here, using first-principles calculations, we investigate the magnetism and the magnetic phase transition in iron carbide (Fe3C) with the substitution of Cr atoms at Fe sites with the strain effect. The presence of Cr atoms is found to give rise to a second-order magnetic phase transition from a ferromagnetic phase for Fe3C to a nonmagnetic phase in chromium carbide (Cr3C).While the ternary Fe2CrC and Cr2FeC compounds prefer the ferrimagnetic ground…
Understanding the magnetic properties of the various Mn doping configurations that can be encountered in $2H$-MoS$_2$ monolayer could be beneficial for its use in spintronics. Using density functional theory plus Hubbard U (DFT$+$U) approach, we study how a single isolated, double- and triple-substitution configurations of Mn atoms within a MoS$_2$ monolayer could contribute to its total magnetization. We find that the doping-configuration plays a critical role in stabilizing a ferromagnetic state in a Mn-doped MoS$_2$ monolayer. Indeed, the Mn-Mn magnetic interaction is found to be ferromagnt…
CaCo2As2 is a unique itinerant system having strong magnetic frustration. Here we report the effect of electron doping on the physical properties resulting from Ni substitutions for Co. The A-type antiferromagnetic transition temperature TN = 52 K for x = 0 decreases to 22 K with only 3 percent Ni substitution and is completely suppressed for x > 0.11. For 0.11 < x < 0.52 strong ferromagnetic (FM) fluctuations develop as revealed by magnetic susceptibility chi(T) measurements. Heat-capacity Cp(T) measurements reveal the presence of FM quantum spin fluctuations for 0.11 < x < 0.52. Our density-…
The effect of cationic size mismatch at the A site at constant manganese valence on the structural and magnetic properties of a perovskite-type rare-earth manganate was investigated in the Pr0.9(Na1-xKx)0.1MnO3 solid solution system (0 <= x < 1). All members of this solid solution series are orthorhombic at room temperature, space group Pbnm. Structural refinements using the Rietveld method show that the cell volume increases and the static Jahn-Teller distortion decreases with increasing potassium content x. Magnetic properties are characterized by strong positive θp values, and are ascribed …
The magnetic lattice of mixed-valence Mn ions in La$_{0.7}$Sr$_{0.3}$MnO$_3$ is selectively diluted by partial substitution of Mn by Al or Ti. The ferromagnetic transition temperature and the saturation moment decreases with substitution in both series. The volume fraction of the non-ferromagnetic phases evolves non-linearly with the substitution concentration and faster than theoretically expected. By presenting the data in terms of selective dilutions, the reduction of $T_\mathrm{c}$ is found to be scaled by the relative ionic concentrations and is consistent with a prediction derived from m…
Polycrystalline La1-xPbxMnO3+-y (x = 0.3, 0.35, 0.4) solid solutions were prepared by solid state reaction method and their magnetic properties have been investigated. Rietveld refinement of X-ray powder diffraction patterns showed that all samples are single phase and crystallized with the rhombohedral structure in the R-3c space group. A second order paramagnetic to ferromagnetic phase transition was observed for all materials. The Griffiths phase (GP), identified from the temperature dependence of the inverse susceptibility, was suppressed by increasing magnetic field and showed a significa…
The realization of long range and insulating ferromagnetic states in topological insulator (TI) has been a pressing issue since its discovery. Only recently, such state was achieved in Cr-doped Bi2-xSbxTe3, leading to the discovery of quantum anomalous Hall effect (QAHE). However, the effect is only observed at extremely low temperatures mainly due to the limited magnetism. To fully understand the mechanism of the ferromagnetic ordering whereby improving the ferromagnetism, we investigated 4f transition metal-doped Bi2Se3, using density-functional-theory approaches. We found that Eu and Sm pre…
We report the growth temperature dependence of the properties of the group-IV-based ferromagnetic semiconductor Ge1-xFex films (x = 6.5% and 10.5%), including the lattice constant, Curie temperature (TC), and Fe-atom locations. While TC strongly depends on the growth temperature, we find a universal relationship between TC and the lattice constant, which does not depend on the Fe content x. By using the channeling Rutherford backscattering and particle-induced X-ray emission measurements, it is clarified that about 15% of the Fe atoms exist in the tetrahedral interstitial sites in the Ge0.935F…
We have made a series of gradient-corrected relativistic full-potential density-functional calculation for Ca-substituted and hole-doped SrRuO$_3$ in para, ferro, and $A$-, $C$-, and $G$-type antiferromagnetic states. Magnetic phase-diagram data for Sr$_{1-x}$Ca$_x$RuO$_3$ at 0 K are presented. Neutron diffraction measurement combined with total energy calculations show that spin-glass behavior with short-range antiferromagnetic interactions rules in CaRuO$_3$. The substitution of Sr by Ca in SrRuO$_3$ decreases the ferromagnetic interaction and enhances the $G$-type antiferromagnetic interact…
The exchange bias (EB) in LaMn_{0.7}Fe_{0.3}O_3 is observed by the negative shift and training effect of the hysteresis loops, while the sample was cooled in external magnetic field. The analysis of cooling field dependence of EB gives the size of the ferromagnetic (FM) cluster ~ 25 Angstrom, where the magnetic anisotropy of FM cluster is found two order of magnitude higher than the FM bulk manganites. We propose that the nanoscale FM clusters are embedded in the glassy magnetic host with EB at the FM/glassy magnetic interface.
Heusler alloy Fe2CrAl exhibits a ferromagnetic behaviour below Curie temperature (TC) ~ 202 K along with presence of cluster glass (CG) phase near freezing temperature (Tf) ~ 3.9 K and Griffiths phase (GP) above 300 K. The physical properties of this alloy are very sensitive to substitutions and anti-site disorder. Here, we investigate the effect of partial substitution of Mo at Cr-site on physical properties of Fe2CrAl. Structural and morphological analysis confirms the single cubic structure of the substituted alloys. Increment in Mo concentration shifts the TC towards lower temperature, whi…
We report a theoretical and experimental investigation of Cr-doped AlN. Density functional calculations predict that the isolated Cr t2 defect level in AlN is 1/3 full, falls approximately at midgap, and broadens into an impurity band for concentrations over 5%. Substitutional Al1-xCrxN random alloys with 0.05 <= x <= 0.15 are predicted to have Curie temperatures over 600 K. Experimentally, we have characterized and optimized the molecular beam epitaxy thin film growth process, and observed room temperature ferromagnetism with a coercive field, Hc, of 120 Oersted. The measured magnetic suscept…
A phenomenological mean-field theory is presented to describe the role of external magnetic field, pressure and chemical substitution on the nature of ferromagnetic (FM) to paramagnetic (PM) phase transition in manganites. The application of external field (or pressure) shifts the transition, leading to a field (or pressure) dependent phase boundary along which a tricritical point is shown to exist where a first-order FM-PM transition becomes second-order. We show that the effect of chemical substitution on the FM transition is analogous to that of external perturbations (magnetic field and pr…
In order to tune the magnetic properties of the cleavable high-Curie temperature ferromagnet Fe$_{5-x}$GeTe$_2$, the effect of increasing the electron count through arsenic substitution has been investigated. Small additions of arsenic (2.5 and 5%) seemingly enhance ferromagnetic order in polycrystalline samples by quenching fluctuations on one of the three magnetic sublattices, whereas larger As concentrations decrease the ferromagnetic Curie temperature ($T_{\rm C}$) and saturation magnetization. This work also describes the growth and characterization of Fe$_{4.8}$AsTe$_2$ single crystals t…
We report the effect of partial substitution of Dy-site by rare-earths (R=Gd, Er and La)on the magnetic and magnetocaloric behavior of a mixed metal oxide DyFe0.5Cr0.5O3.Structural studies reveal that substitution of Dy by R has a minimal influence on the crystal structure. Magnetic and heat capacity studies show that the magnetic transition around 121 K observed for DyFe0.5Cr0.5O3 remains unchanged with rare-earth substitution, whereas the lower magnetic transition temperature is suppressed/enhanced by magnetic/non-magnetic substitution. In all these compounds, the second order nature of magn…
Magnetic entropy and adiabatic temperature changes in and above the room-temperature region has been measured for La0.7Sr0.3Mn1-xM'xO3 (M' = Al, Ti) by means of magnetization and heat capacity measurements in magnetic fields up to 6 T. The magnetocaloric effect becomes largest at the ferromagnetic ordering temperature Tc that is tuned to ~300 K by the substitution of Al or Ti for Mn. While the substitution of Al for Mn drastically reduces the entropy change, it extends considerably the working temperature span and improves the relative cooling power. The magnetocaloric effect seems to be only …
Recently, a massive magnetocaloric effect near the liquefaction temperature of hydrogen has been reported in the ferromagnetic material HoB$_{2}$. Here we investigate the effects of Dy substitution in the magnetocaloric properties of Ho$_{1-x}$Dy$_{x}$B$_{2}$ alloys ($\textit{x}$ = 0, 0.3, 0.5, 0.7, 1.0). We find that the Curie temperature ($\textit{T}$$_{C}$) gradually increases upon Dy substitution, while the magnitude of the magnetic entropy change |$Δ\textit{S}_{M}$| at $\textit{T}$ = $\textit{T}_{C}$ decreases from 0.35 to 0.15 J cm$^{-3}$ K$^{-1}$ for a field change of 5 T. Due to the pr…
Mn-doped wurtzite GaN epilayers have been grown by nitrogen plasma-assisted molecular beam epitaxy. Correlated SIMS, structural and magnetic measurements show that the incorporation of Mn strongly depends on the conditions of the growth. Hysteresis loops which persist at high temperature do not appear to be correlated to the presence of Mn. Samples with up to 2% Mn are purely substitutional Ga$_{1-x}$Mn$_x$N epilayers, and exhibit paramagnetic properties. At higher Mn contents, precipitates are formed which are identified as GaMn$_3$N clusters by x-ray diffraction and absorption: this induces …
The spontaneous exchange bias (SEB) effect is a remarkable phenomenon recently observed in some reentrant spin-glass materials. Here we investigate the SEB in La$_{1.5}$(Sr$_{0.5-x}$Ba$_{x}$)CoMnO$_{6}$ double-perovskites, a system with multifarious magnetic phases for which a notable increase in the exchange bias field is observed for intermediate Sr/Ba concentrations. The Ba to Sr substitution leads to the enhancement of the crystal lattice, which is accompanied by the raise of both the effective magnetic moment ($μ_{eff}$) and the antiferromagnetic (AFM) transition temperature that is obser…
We present an investigation of Mn δ-doped layers in Si(001) grown by molecular beam epitaxy. We discovered that a Pb surfactant has significant effect on the structural and magnetic properties of the submonolayer of Mn, which depends on the Si capping layer growth temperature, T_Si, and the Mn coverage, θ_Mn. The results presented in this paper identify three regions in the growth-phase-diagram characterized by distinct magnetic behaviors and crystal structures. In one region, X-ray absorption fine structure (XAFS) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) experiments indicate that MnSi nanoc…
We investigate the effects of Fe and Co substitutions on the phase stability of the martensitic phase, mechanical, electronic and magnetic properties of magnetic shape memory system Mn$_{2}$NiGa by first-principles Density functional theory(DFT) calculations. The evolution of these aspects upon substitution of Fe and Co at different crystallographic sites are investigated by computing the electronic structure, mechanical properties and magnetic exchange parameters. We find that the martensitic phase of Mn$_{2}$NiGa gradually de-stabilises with increase in concentration of Fe/Co due to the weak…
Ferromagnetic topological insulators exhibit the quantum anomalous Hall effect that might be used for high precision metrology and edge channel spintronics. In conjunction with superconductors, they could host chiral Majorana zero modes which are among the contenders for the realization of topological qubits. Recently, it was discovered that the stable 2+ state of Mn enables the formation of intrinsic magnetic topological insulators with A1B2C4 stoichiometry. However, the first representative, MnBi2Te4, is antiferromagnetic with 25 K Néel temperature and strongly n-doped. Here, we show that p-…
The nature of phase separation in $Pr_{0.5}Sr_{0.5}MnO_3$ has been probed by linear as well as nonlinear magnetic susceptibilities and resistivity measurements across the 2nd order paramagnetic to ferromagnetic transition ($T_C$) and 1st order ferromagnetic to antiferromagnetic transition ($T_N$). We found that the ferromagnetic (metallic) clusters, which form with the onset of long-range order in the system at $T_C$, continuously decrease their size with the decrease in temperature and coexist with non-ferromagnetic (insulating) clusters. These non-ferromagnetic clusters are identified to be …
The magnetic properties of the ferromagnetic semiconductor In0.98Mn0.02As were characterized by x-ray absorption spectroscopy and x-ray magnetic circular dichroism. The Mn exhibits an atomic-like L2,3 absorption spectrum that indicates that the 3d states are highly localized. In addition, a large dichroism at the Mn L2,3 edge was observed from 5-300 K at an applied field of 2T. A calculated spectrum assuming atomic Mn2+ yields the best agreement with the experimental InMnAs spectrum. A comparison of the dichroism spectra of MnAs and InMnAs show clear differences suggesting that the ferromagnet…
Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and magnetic measurements were performed to study the influence of ferromagnetic 3-d transition elements Fe and Co on structural and magnetic properties of ferromagnetic shape memory alloys Ni2MnGa. Addition of Fe or Co on the Ni sites decreases the temperature of martensitic phase transition Tm, whereas addition of Co on the Mn sites results in a considerable increase of Tm. Magnetic measurement revealed that Curie temperature TC increases upon substitution of Fe or Co for Ni. This observation is of importance for design of high temperature ferromagneti…
The tetragonal layered compounds TbTiGe and ErTiGe order antiferromagnetically at 276 K and 39 K, respectively. Partial substitution of Mo for Ti in these two compounds modifies the magnetic interactions giving rise to a ferromagnetic ground state which results in an enhanced magnetocaloric effect. The magnetic entropy change in ErTi0.85Mo0.15Ge for a magnetic field change of 5 T is ~10.5 J/kg/K against ~0.8 J/kg/K for ErTiGe in the vicinity of the magnetic transition. Thus, magnetocaloric properties of such layered materials may be tunable by suitable chemical substitutions.
