The spontaneous exchange bias (SEB) effect is a remarkable phenomenon recently observed in some reentrant spin-glass materials. Here we investigate the SEB in La$_{1.5}$(Sr$_{0.5-x}$Ba$_{x}$)CoMnO$_{6}$ double-perovskites, a system with multifarious magnetic phases for which a notable increase in the exchange bias field is observed for intermediate Sr/Ba concentrations. The Ba to Sr substitution leads to the enhancement of the crystal lattice, which is accompanied by the raise of both the effective magnetic moment ($μ_{eff}$) and the antiferromagnetic (AFM) transition temperature that is observed below the ferromagnetic ordering. Such increases are likely related to the increased fraction of Co$^{3+}$ in the high spin configuration, leading to the enhancement of Co$^{3+}$--O--Mn$^{4+}$ AFM phase and to the reduction in the uncompensation of the AFM coupling between Co and Mn. The combined effect of the increased $μ_{eff}$ and AFM phase plausible explains the changes in the SEB effect.
La$_{1.5}$Ba$_{0.5}$CoMnO$_{6}$ is a re-entrant cluster glass material exhibiting a robust negative exchange bias (EB) effect even after being cooled from an unmagnetized state down to low temperature in zero magnetic field. Here we thoroughly investigate this phenomena by performing magnetization as a function of applied field [$M(H)$] measurements at several different temperatures and maximum applied magnetic fields ($H_m$). The spontaneous EB (SEB) effect is observed below 20 K, and shows a maximum value for $H_m$ = 75 kOe. The effect is greatly enhanced when the $M(H)$ curves are measured …
First-principles electronic structure calculations have been performed for the double perovskite Bi$_2$CoMnO$_6$ in its non-centrosymmetric polar state using generalized gradient approximation plus Hubbard U approach. We find that while Co is in a high spin state, Mn is in an intermediate spin state. The calculated dynamical charge tensors are anisotropic reflecting a low-symmetry structure of the compound. Magnetic structure dependent phonon frequencies indicate the presence of spin-phonon coupling. Using Berry phase method, we obtain a spontaneous electronic polarization of 5.88 $μC/cm^2$ wh…
In the zero-field-cooled exchange bias (ZEB) effect the unidirectional magnetic anisotropy is set at low temperatures even when the system is cooled in the absence of external magnetic field. La$_{1.5}$Sr$_{0.5}$CoMnO$_{6}$ stands out as presenting the largest ZEB reported so far, while for La$_{1.5}$Ca$_{0.5}$CoMnO$_{6}$ the exchange bias field ($H_{EB}$) is one order of magnitude smaller. Here we show that La$_{1.5}$Ba$_{0.5}$CoMnO$_{6}$ also exhibits a pronounced shift of its magnetic hysteresis loop, with intermediate $H_{EB}$ value in respect to Ca- and Sr-doped samples. In order to figur…
La$_{1.5}$Sr$_{0.5}$CoMn$_{0.5}$Fe$_{0.5}$O$_{6}$ (LSCMFO) compound was prepared by solid state reaction and its structural, electronic and magnetic properties were investigated. The material forms in rhombohedral $R\bar{3}c$ structure, and the presence of distinct magnetic interactions leads to the formation of a Griffiths phase above its FM transition temperature (150 K), possibly related to the nucleation of small short-ranged ferromagnetic clusters. At low temperatures, a spin glass-like phase emerges and the system exhibits both the conventional and the spontaneous exchange bias (EB) effe…
The phase purity and crystal structure of PLTA samples (synthesized via sol-gel process) were confirmed using synchrotron x-ray powder diffraction (wavelength, lmbda= 0.44573 A. Rietveld analyses of powder x-ray diffraction data confirmed the tetragonal structure for compositions with more than 0.18 and cubic structure for the sample with 0.25 composition. Temperature-dependent XRD was performed to investigate the structural change from tetragonal to cubic structure phase transition. Raman spectroscopy at room temperature also confirmed this phase transition with composition. Field emission sc…
The chemical inertness of the defect-free basal plane confers environmental stability to MoS2 single-layers, but it also limits their chemical versatility and catalytic activity. The stability of the pristine MoS2 basal plane against oxidation under ambient conditions is a widely accepted assumption in the interpretation of various studies and applications. However, single-atom level structural investigations reported here reveal that oxygen atoms spontaneously incorporate into the basal plane of MoS2 single layers during ambient exposure. Our scanning tunneling microscopy investigations revea…
We performed ab initio calculation on the pristine and carbon-doped (5,5) and (9,0) BN nanotubes. It was found that Carbon substitution for either boron or nitrogen in BN nanotubes can induce spontaneous magnetization. Calculations based on density functional theory with the local-spin-density-approximation on the electronic band structure revealed a spin polarized, dispersionless band near the Fermi energy. The magnetization can be attributed to the carbon 2p electron. Compared to other theoretical models of light-element or metal-free magnetic materials, the Carbon-doped BN nanotubes are mor…
Recent experimental and theoretical work has shown that the double perovskite NaLaMnWO$_6$ exhibits antiferromagnetic ordering owing to the Mn $d$ states, and computational studies further predict it to exhibit a spontaneous electric polarization due to an improper mechanism for ferroelectricity [King \textit{et al., Phys.\ Rev.\ B}, 2009, \textbf{79}, 224428; Fukushima \textit{et al., Phys.\ Chem.\ Chem.\ Phys.}, 2011, \textbf{13}, 12186], which make it a candidate multiferroic material. Using first-principles density functional calculations, we investigate nine isostructural and isovalent $A…
In this article, the collective response of the spins is explored through low field bulk magnetic measurement for the series YMn$_{2-x}$Cr$_x$O$_5$ (x= 0.0, 0.05). Low field ac susceptibility and dc magnetization of YMn$_2$O$_5$ shows multiple transition in analogy to those observed in electrical measurement of the compound. Using various time dependent magnetization protocols it has been observed that the behavior of spins in commensurate and incommensurate phase are drastically different. YMn$_{1.95}$Cr$_{0.05}$O$_5$ undergoes a ferrimagnetic ordering with an enhanced magnetic ordering tempe…
For Sn$_2$P$_2$S$_6$ ferroelectrics the second order phase transitions line is observed until reaching the tricritical point at transition temperature lowering to 250 K by compression. Observed temperature-pressure phase diagram agrees with simulated diagram by MC calculations based on early founded by DFT study local potential for Sn$_2$P$_2$S$_6$ crystals. In addition to the tricritical point, the possibility of disordered and quadrupolar phases occurrence was shown. For mixed crystals with tin by lead substitution, the investigated ultrasound, hypersound and low frequency dielectric propert…

Exchange bias (EB) refers to a shift of the hysteresis loop along the field axis in materials consisting of ferromagnetic (FM) and antiferromagnetic (AFM) layers, generally after a cooling procedure in high magnetic field. This effect is highly desirable for technological applications ranging from spintronics to magnetic recording. Achieving giant EB effect near room temperature in a small cooling field is thus an on-going technologically relevant challenge for the materials science community. In this work, we present the experimental realization of such a fundamental goal by demonstrating the…
We use the x-ray diffraction, magnetic susceptibility, isothermal magnetization, and photoelectron spectroscopy to study the structural, magnetic and electronic properties of La$_{(1-x)}$$A_x$CoO$_3$ ($A=$ Sr, Ca; $x=$ 0 -- 0.2) nanoparticles. The Rietveld refinements of room temperature powder x-ray diffraction data confirm the single phase and the rhombohedral crystal structure with R$\bar{3}$C space group. We find drastic changes in the magnetic properties and spin-states with Sr/Ca substitution (hole doping). For $x=$ 0 sample, the magnetic measurements show a ferromagnetic transition at T…

Nearly a 50% decrease of resistivity ρ(T,x) due to just 4% Cu doping on the Mn site of La(2/3)Ca(1/3)Mn(1-x)Cu(x)O(3) is observed. Attributing the observed phenomenon to the substitution induced decrease of the spin polaron energy E_s(x) below the Curie point T_C(x)=T_C(0)(1-x), all data are found to be well fitted by the nonthermal coherent tunneling expression ρ(T,x) = ρ_0*exp(-γM^2(T,x)) assuming M(T,x)=M_R(x)+M_0(x)*tanh{\sqrt{[T_C(x)/T]^2-1}} for the magnetization in the ferromagnetic state. The best fits through all the data points yield M_0(x)= \sqrt(1-x)M_0(0), M_R(x)=\sqrt(x)M_0(0), a…
