Polycrystalline La1-xPbxMnO3+-y (x = 0.3, 0.35, 0.4) solid solutions were prepared by solid state reaction method and their magnetic properties have been investigated. Rietveld refinement of X-ray powder diffraction patterns showed that all samples are single phase and crystallized with the rhombohedral structure in the R-3c space group. A second order paramagnetic to ferromagnetic phase transition was observed for all materials. The Griffiths phase (GP), identified from the temperature dependence of the inverse susceptibility, was suppressed by increasing magnetic field and showed a significant dependence on A-site chemical substitution. The critical behaviour of the compounds was investigated near to their Curie temperatures, using intrinsic magnetic field data. The critical exponents (\b{eta}, γ and δ) are close to the mean-field approximation values for all three compounds. The observed mean-field like behaviour is a consequence of the GP and the formation of ferromagnetic clusters. Long-range ferromagnetic order is established as the result of long-range interactions between ferromagnetic clusters. The magnetocaloric effect was studied in terms of the isothermal entropy change. Our study shows that the material with the lowest chemical substitution (x = 0.3) has the highest potential (among the three compounds) as magnetic refrigerant, owing to its higher relative cooling power (258 J/kg at 5 T field) and a magnetic phase transition near room temperature.
La$_{1.5}$Sr$_{0.5}$CoMn$_{0.5}$Fe$_{0.5}$O$_{6}$ (LSCMFO) compound was prepared by solid state reaction and its structural, electronic and magnetic properties were investigated. The material forms in rhombohedral $R\bar{3}c$ structure, and the presence of distinct magnetic interactions leads to the formation of a Griffiths phase above its FM transition temperature (150 K), possibly related to the nucleation of small short-ranged ferromagnetic clusters. At low temperatures, a spin glass-like phase emerges and the system exhibits both the conventional and the spontaneous exchange bias (EB) effe…
The structural, magnetic, magnetocaloric and Griffiths phase (GP) disorder of non-stoichiometric perovskite manganites La_(0.8-x) Sr_(0.2-y) Mn_(1+x+y) O_3 are reported here. Determination of valence states and structural phases evidenced that the smaller cations Mn2+ and Mn3+ will not occupy the A-site of a perovskite under atmospheric synthesis conditions. The same analysis also supports that the vacancy in the A-site of a perovskite induces a similar vacancy in the B-site. The La3+ and Sr2+ cation substitutions in the A-site with vacancy influences the magnetic phase transition temperature …
Cobalt based sulphides of compositional formula Co$ _{3} $A$ _{2} $S$ _{2} $ (A = Sn and In) are endowed with frustrated kagome lattice structure and a plethora of novel phenomena determined from the topological band structure. Here-in, we report on the detailed exploration of anisotropic magnetic properties of single crystals of ferromagnetic compound Co$ _{3} $Sn$ _{2} $S$ _{2} $ under magnetic field $H$ applied along the c-axis $(H\parallel c)$ and the ab-plane $(H\parallel ab)$. A low temperature clustered-glassy magnetic behaviour is revealed in field-cooled and zero field-cooled magnetiz…
Understanding the properties of molecular solids at high pressure is a key element in the development of new solid-state theories. However, the most commonly used generalized-gradient approximation (GGA) of the density functional theory (DFT) often fails to correctly describe the behavior of these systems at high pressure. Here we utilize the hybrid DFT approach to model the properties of elemental bromine at high pressure. The calculations reproduce in very good agreement with experiment the properties of the molecular phase I (Cmca symmetry) and its pressure-induced transition into the non-m…
Recent studies on weak ferromagnets Fe2-xMnxCrAl (0<x<1) reveal the presence of cluster glass (CG) and Griffiths phase (GP) below and above the ferromagnetic transition temperature (TC) [(2019) Sci. Rep. 9 15888]. In this work, the influence of these inhomogeneous phases on the critical behaviour (around TC) of the above-mentioned series of alloys has been investigated in detail. For the parent alloy Fe2CrAl, γ is estimated as ~ 1.34, which lies near to ordered 3D Heisenberg model, whereas obtained value of β ~ 0.273 does not belong to any universality class. With increment in Mn concentration…
The Lennard-Jones potential is perhaps one of the most widely-used models for the interaction of uncharged particles, such as noble gas solids. The phase diagram of the classical LJ solid is known to exhibit transitions between hcp and fcc phases. However, the phase behaviour of the quantum Lennard-Jones solid remains unknown. Thermodynamic integration based on path integral molecular dynamics and lattice dynamics calculations are used to study the phase stability of the hcp and fcc Lennard-Jones solids. The hcp phase is shown to be stabilized by quantum effects in PIMD while fcc is shown to b…
Magnetic Behaviour of the $Bi_{2-y} Sr_y Ir_2 O_7$ Pyrochlore Solid Solution
We report the ferroelectric property in Tb2Ti2O7 pyrochlore, prepared by a two-step solid-state reaction method. A concave P-E (polarisation vs electric field) loop observed from 382 K confirms ferroelectricity, below which the loop remains as pointed or banana-shaped. Dielectric plots clearly show an anomaly at 383 K and the magnetic data reveals a deviation from 380 K supporting the observed ferroelectric ordering. The origin of ferroelectricity in Tb2Ti2O7 is discussed which is due to the structural distortion in TiO6 octahedron.
Triacylglycerols (TAGs) are among the most important ingredients in food, cosmetic and pharmaceutical products. Many physical properties of such products, incl. morphology, texture and rheology, are determined by the phase behaviour of the included TAGs. Triglycerides are also of special interest for the production of solid lipid nanoparticles, applied for controlled drug delivery and for encapsulation of bioactive ingredients. In this paper, we study the polymorphic behaviour of complex TAG mixtures, composed of 2 to 6 mixed TAGs, by differential scanning calorimetry and X-ray scattering tech…
We study low-salt, binary aqueous suspensions of charged colloidal spheres of size ratio Phi = 0.57, number densities below the eutectic number density n_E, and number fractions of p = 1.00-0.40. The typical phase obtained by solidification from a homogeneous shear-melt is a substitutional alloy of body centred cubic structure. In strictly gas-tight vials, the polycrystalline solid is stable against melting and further phase transformation for extended times. For comparison, we prepare the same samples also by slow and mechanically undisturbed deionization in commercial slit cells. These cells…
Tetragonal distorted spinel of CuMn2-xTixO4 (x = 0, 0.25 and 0.50) was prepared by solid state reaction method followed by neutron diffraction, FTIR spectroscopy, dielectric spectroscopy and magnetization measurements. The neutron diffraction and FTIR spectroscopy provide the information regarding phase formation. But, the magnetic susceptibility clearly shows the ferri-magnetic order below 76K associated with meta-magnetic state which turns to spin-glass behaviour upon Ti-substitution for Mn in CuMn2O4. In addition, the room temperature M(H) of all the spinels are described by the Arrott's pl…
While 2D materials attract considerable interests for their exotic electronic and mechanical properties, their phase behaviour is still largely not understood. This work focuses on (Mo:Ti)S$_2$ binary alloys which have captured the interest of the tribology community for their good performance in solid lubrication applications and whose chemistry and crystallography is still debated. Using electronic structures calculations and statistical mechanics we predict a phase-separating behaviour for the system and trace its origin to the energetics of the $d$-band manifold due to crystal field splitt…
