Ferromagnetic topological insulators exhibit the quantum anomalous Hall effect that might be used for high precision metrology and edge channel spintronics. In conjunction with superconductors, they could host chiral Majorana zero modes which are among the contenders for the realization of topological qubits. Recently, it was discovered that the stable 2+ state of Mn enables the formation of intrinsic magnetic topological insulators with A1B2C4 stoichiometry. However, the first representative, MnBi2Te4, is antiferromagnetic with 25 K Néel temperature and strongly n-doped. Here, we show that p-type MnSb2Te4, previously considered topologically trivial, is a ferromagnetic topological insulator in the case of a few percent of Mn excess. It shows (i) a ferromagnetic hysteresis with record high Curie temperature of 45-50 K, (ii) out-of-plane magnetic anisotropy and (iii) a two-dimensional Dirac cone with the Dirac point close to the Fermi level which features (iv) out-of-plane spin polarization as revealed by photoelectron spectroscopy and (v) a magnetically induced band gap that closes at the Curie temperature as demonstrated by scanning tunneling spectroscopy. Moreover, it displays (vi) a critical exponent of magnetization beta~1, indicating the vicinity of a quantum critical point. Ab initio band structure calculations reveal that the slight excess of Mn that substitutionally replaces Sb atoms provides the ferromagnetic interlayer coupling. Remaining deviations from the ferromagnetic order, likely related to this substitution, open the inverted bulk band gap and render MnSb2Te4 a robust topological insulator and new benchmark for magnetic topological insulators.
We study a general problem how the gap in a nonmagnetic band insulator closes by tuning a parameter. We review our recent results on the classification of all the possible gap closing in two and three dimensions. We show that they accompany the change of Z_2 topological numbers, and that the gap closings correspond to phase transitions between the quantum spin Hall and the insulator phases. Interestingly, in inversion-asymmetric three-dimensional systems there appears a gapless phase between the quantum spin Hall and insulator phases. This gapless phase is due to a topological nature of gap-cl…
We combine extensive precision measurements of the optically detected spin dynamics and magneto-transport measurements in a contiguous set of n-doped bulk GaAs structures in order to unambiguously unravel the intriguing but complex contributions to the spin relaxation at the metal-to-insulator transition (MIT). Just below the MIT, the interplay between hopping induced loss of spin coherence and hyperfine interaction yields a maximum spin lifetime exceeding 800~ns. At slightly higher doping concentrations, however, the spin relaxation deviates from the expected Dyakonov-Perel mechanism which is…
Magnetic insulators have been intensively studied for over 100 years, and they, in particular ferrites, are considered to be the cradle of magnetic exchange interactions in solids. Their wide range of applications include microwave devices and permanent magnets . They are also suitable for spintronic devices owing to their high resistivity, low magnetic damping, and spin-dependent tunneling probabilities. The Curie temperature is the crucial factor determining the temperature range in which any ferri/ferromagnetic system remains stable. However, the record Curie temperature has stood for over …
To further investigate the interplay between ferromagnetism and topological insulators, thin films of the low-carrier topological insulator (Bi$_x$Sb$_{1-x}$)$_2$Te$_3$ were deposited on the insulating ferromagnet EuS (100) in situ. AC susceptibility indicates magnetic anomalies between $T\approx30~\mathrm{K}$ and $T\approx60~\mathrm{K}$, well above the Curie temperature $T_C \approx 15~\mathrm{K}$ of EuS. When the Fermi level is close to the Dirac point and the surface state dominates the electric conduction, sharp increases in resistance with decreasing temperatures were observed concurrentl…
Magnetotransport constitutes a useful probe to understand the interplay between electronic band topology and magnetism in spintronics devices based on topological materials. A recent theory of Lu and Shen [Phys. Rev. Lett. 112, 146601 (2014)] on magnetically doped topological insulators predicts that quantum corrections $Δκ$ to the temperature-dependence of the conductivity can change sign during the Curie transition. This phenomenon has been attributed to a suppression of the Berry phase of the topological surface states at the Fermi level, caused by a magnetic energy gap. Here, we demonstrat…
Recently, the quantum anomalous Hall (QAH) insulators are predicted in Lithium-decorated iron-based superconductor monolayer materials (LiFeX (X=S, Se and Te)) with very high Curie temperature (\textcolor[rgb]{0.00,0.00,1.00}{PRL 125, 086401 (2020)}), which combines the topological and ferromagnetic (FM) orders. It is interesting and useful to achieve coexistence of intrinsic piezoelectricity, ferromagnetism and nontrivial band topology in single two-dimensional (2D) material, namely 2D piezoelectric quantum anomalous hall insulator (PQAHI). In this work, 2D Janus monolayer $\mathrm{Li_2Fe_2SS…
The electronic structure of Mn doped GaAs and GaN have been examined within a multiband Hubbard model. By virtue of the positioning of the Mn d states, Mn doped GaAs is found to belong to the p-d metal regime of the Zaanen-Sawatzky-Allen phase diagram and its variants while Mn doping in GaN belongs to the covalent insulator regime. Their location in the phase diagram also determines how they would behave under quantum confinement which would increase the charge transfer energy. The ferromagnetic stability of Mn doped GaAs, we find, increases with confinement therefore providing a route to high…

Based on DFT and Berry curvature calculations, we predict that quantum anomalous hall effect (QAHE) can be realized in two dimensional anti-ferromagnetic (AFM) NiRuCl6 with zero net magnetic moment. By tuning spin-orbits coupling (SOC), we find that the topological properties of NiRuCl6 come from its energy band reversal. The results indicate that NiRuCl6 behaves as AFM Chern insulator and its spin-polarized electronic structure and strong spin-orbits coupling (SOC) are the origin of QAHE. Considering the compatibility between AFM and insulator, AFM Chern insulator is more suitable to realize …
The quantum anomalous Hall effect (QAHE) has been recently demonstrated in Cr- and V-doped three-dimensional topological insulators (TIs) at temperatures below 100 mK. In those materials, the spins of unfilled d-electrons in the transition metal dopants are exchange coupled to develop a long-range ferromagnetic order, which is essential for realizing QAHE. However, the addition of random dopants does not only introduce excess charge carriers that require readjusting the Bi/Sb ratio, but also unavoidably introduces paramagnetic spins that can adversely affect the chiral edge transport in QAHE. …
Topological phase transitions between a conventional insulator and a state of matter with topological properties have been proposed and observed in mercury telluride - cadmium telluride quantum wells. We show that a topological state can be induced in such a device, initially in the trivial phase, by irradiation with microwave frequencies, without closing the gap and crossing the phase transition. We show that the quasi-energy spectrum exhibits a single pair of helical edge states. The velocity of the edge states can be tuned by adjusting the intensity of the microwave radiation. We discuss th…
We perform a computational screening for two-dimensional magnetic materials based on experimental bulk compounds present in the Inorganic Crystal Structure Database and Crystallography Open Database. A recently proposed geometric descriptor is used to extract materials that are exfoliable into two-dimensional derivatives and we find 85 ferromagnetic and 61 anti-ferromagnetic materials for which we obtain magnetic exchange and anisotropy parameters using density functional theory. For the easy-axis ferromagnetic insulators we calculate the Curie temperature based on classical Monte Carlo simula…
To explore new materials for the realization of the quantum anomalous Hall effect (QAHE), we studied electronic, magnetic and topological properties of transition-metal phthalocyanine (TMPc) monolayers in a square lattice. Many of them have large topologically nontrivial band gaps and integer Chern numbers. In particular, the Fermi level of MoPc lies right in the band gap (Eg=8.1 meV) and has large magnetic anisotropy energy (MAE=2.0 meV per Mo atom) and a Curie temperature of 16 K, showing its usefulness for applications. The presence of topologically protected edge state in a MoPc nanoribbon…
Recently, higher-order topological insulators have been attracting extensive interest. Unlike the conventional topological insulators that demand bulk gap closings at transition points, the higher-order band topology can be changed without bulk closure and exhibits as an obstruction of higher-dimensional boundary states. Here, we report the first experimental realization of three-dimensional surface-obstructed topological insulators with using acoustic crystals. Our acoustic measurements demonstrate unambiguously the emergence of one-dimensional topological hinge states in the middle of the bu…
We predict pseudo topological insulators that have been previously overlooked. We determine some conditions under which robust pseudo topological edge states appear and illustrate our idea on the Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) model with extra chiral symmetry breaking potentials. We discuss that pseudo topological insulating phase transition occurs without band gap closing.
Nontrivial band topology combined with magnetic ordering can produce quantum anomalous Hall insulator (QAHI), which may lead to advances in device concepts. Here, through first-principles calculations, stable monolayer $\mathrm{Fe_2Br_2}$ is predicted as a room-temperature large-gap high-Chern-number QAHI by using generalized gradient approximation plus $U$ (GGA+$U$) approach. The large gap is due to correlation-enhanced spin-orbit coupling (SOC) effect of Fe atoms, which equates with artificially increasing the strength of SOC without electronic correlation. Out-of-plane magnetic anisotropy i…
Carrier-independent ferromagnetism of chromium doped topological insulator $Bi_xSb_{2-x}Te_3$ thin films, which cannot be explained by current theory of dilute magnetic semiconductor, has been reported recently. To study if it is related to the distinctive surface state of topological insulator, we studied the structural, magnetic and transport characters of $Cr_{0.2}Bi_xSb_{1.8-x}Te_3$ single crystals. The Curie temperature $T_c$, which is determined from magnetization and anomalous Hall effect measurements by Arrott plots, is found to be proportional to $p^{1/3}$, where p is the hole density.…
Recently, this long-sought quantum anomalous Hall effect was realized in the magnetic topological insulator. However, the requirement of an extremely low temperature (approximately 30 mK) hinders realistic applications. Based on \textit{ab-initio} band structure calculations, we propose a quantum anomalous Hall platform with a large energy gap of 0.34 and 0.06 eV on honeycomb lattices comprised of Sn and Ge, respectively. The ferromagnetic order forms in one sublattice of the honeycomb structure by controlling the surface functionalization rather than dilute magnetic doping, which is expected …
We present a comparative, theoretical study of the doping dependence of the critical temperature $T_C$ of the ferromagnetic insulator-metal transition in Gd-doped and O-deficient EuO, respectively. The strong $T_C$ enhancement in Eu$_{1-x}$Gd$_x$O is due to Kondo-like spin fluctuations on the Gd sites, which are absent in EuO$_{1-x}$. Moreover, we find that the $T_C$ saturation in Eu$_{1-x}$Gd$_x$O for large $x$ is due to a reduced activation of dopant electrons into the conduction band, in agreement with experiments, rather than antiferromagnetic long-range contributions of the RKKY interacti…
We address scatterings of spin waves off uncorrelated defects in two-dimensional (2D) easy-axis antiferromagnet (AFM) insulators. Although an onsite magnetic anisotropy leads gapped Goldstone modes, such that a long range (AFM) order can be established in 2D, lattice imperfections tend to weaken, and eventually destroy the magnetic ordering. Here, the impact of defects is considered within two limits, single and multiple defects. Using Green's function, we perform self consistent simulations to study magnon properties such as density of states and lifetime of induced resonances. Our findings s…
The quantum anomalous Hall effect (QAHE) that emerges under broken time-reversal symmetry in topological insulators (TI) exhibits many fascinating physical properties for potential applications in nano-electronics and spintronics. However, in transition-metal doped TI, the only experimentally demonstrated QAHE system to date, the effect is lost at practically relevant temperatures. This constraint is imposed by the relatively low Curie temperature (Tc) and inherent spin disorder associated with the random magnetic dopants. Here we demonstrate drastically enhanced Tc by exchange coupling TI to …
Inducing magnetic orders in a topological insulator (TI) to break its time reversal symmetry has been predicted to reveal many exotic topological quantum phenomena. The manipulation of magnetic orders in a TI layer can play a key role in harnessing these quantum phenomena towards technological applications. Here we fabricated a thin magnetic TI film on an antiferromagnetic (AFM) insulator Cr2O3 layer and found that the magnetic moments of the magnetic TI layer and the surface spins of the Cr2O3 layers favor interfacial AFM coupling. Field cooling studies show a crossover from negative to posit…
The introduction of magnetic order on the surface of topological insulators in general breaks the two-dimensional character of topological surface state (TSS). Once the TSS disappears, it is improbable to restore the topological surface properties. In this report, we demonstrate that it is possible to restore the inherent TSS by ultra-high vacuum annealing. Starting from an antiferromagnetic Gd-doped Bi2Te3, that has surface state gap without TSS properties, after annealing we observed the gap closing as well as typical TSS features in physical properties. The microscopic mechanism of atomic m…
Topological phases of matter are generally characterized by topological properties of energy bands of a system. Their transitions under preserved symmetries occur through closing a gap of energy bands, leading to topologically protected edge states in energy spectra in topological phases. Here we predict a new topological phase that emerges through closing a gap of bands constructed by energy bands, instead of through closing an energy gap with preserved symmetries. From this perspective, topological phases may arise from topological properties of the "bands of bands" associated with their gap…
Cr2Ge2Te6 (CGT), a layered ferromagnetic insulator, has attracted a great deal of interest recently owing to its potential for integration with Dirac materials to realize the quantum anomalous Hall effect (QAHE) and to develop novel spintronics devices. Here, we study the uniaxial magnetic anisotropy energy of single-crystalline CGT and determine that the magnetic easy axis is directed along the c-axis in its ferromagnetic phase. In addition, CGT is an insulator below the Curie temperature. These properties make CGT a potentially promising candidate substrate for integration with topological i…

Spin injection using ferromagnetic semiconductors at room temperature is a building block for the realization of spin-functional semiconductor devices. Nevertheless, this has been very challenging due to the lack of reliable room-temperature ferromagnetism in well-known group IV and III-V based semiconductors. Here, we demonstrate room-temperature spin injection by using spin pumping in a (Ga,Fe)Sb / BiSb heterostructure, where (Ga,Fe)Sb is a ferromagnetic semiconductor (FMS) with high Curie temperature (TC) and BiSb is a topological insulator (TI). Despite the very small magnetization of (Ga,…
We report on molecular beam epitaxy and properties of a magnetic topological insulator, Cr doped Sb2Te3. The composition analysis reveals that Cr replaces Sb site, and x-ray diffraction confirms that single phase textured crystal structure can be obtained for (CrxSb1-x)2Te3 with x up to 0.44. Further increase in x results in phase separation or precipitates in the material. The Curie temperature TC increases with x up to 0.44, and reaches to 250 K, which is the highest TC observed till now in magnetically doped topological insulators.
We present a study of the magnetic properties of YNiO$_{3}$ in the paramagnetic range, above and below the metal-insulator (MI) transition. The dc susceptibility, $χ_{dc}$ (measured up to 1000 K) is a decreasing function of T for $T >$150 K (the Néel temperature) and we observe two different Curie-Weiss regimes corresponding to the metallic and insulator phases. In the metallic phase, this behaviour seems to be associated with the small ionic radius of Y% $^{3+}$. The value of the Curie constant for T$<$ T$_{MI}$ allows us to discard the possibility of Ni$^{3+}$ localization. An electron spin …
The great obstacle for practical applications of the quantum anomalous Hall (QAH) effect is the lack of suitable QAH materials (Chern insulators) with large non-trivial band gap, room-temperature magnetic order and high carrier mobility. The Nickle chloride (NiCl3) monolayer characteristics are investigated herein using first-principles calculations. It is reported that NiCl3 monolayers constitute a new class of Dirac materials with Dirac spin-gapless semiconducting and high-temperature ferromagnetism (~400K). Taking into account the spin-orbit coupling, the NiCl3 monolayer becomes an intrinsi…
Ferromagnetic insulators play a crucial role in the development of low-dissipation quantum magnetic devices for spintronics. Epitaxial LaCoO3 thin film is a prominent ferromagnetic insulator, in which the robust ferromagnetic ordering emerges owing to epitaxial strain. Whereas it is evident that strong spin-lattice coupling induces ferromagnetism, the reported ferromagnetic properties of epitaxially strained LaCoO3 thin films were highly consistent. For example, even under largely modulated degree of strain, the reported Curie temperatures of epitaxially strained LaCoO3 thin films lie within 8…
We consider antiferromagnets breaking both time-reversal (Theta) and a primitive lattice translational symmetry (T) of a crystal but preserving the combination S = Theta T. The S symmetry leads to a Z_2 topological classification of insulators, separating the ordinary insulator phase from the "antiferromagnetic topological insulator" (AFTI) phase. This state is similar to the "strong" topological insulator with time-reversal symmetry, and shares with it such properties as a quantized magnetoelectric effect. However, for certain surfaces the surface states are intrinsically gapped with a half-q…
Topological magnets are a new family of quantum materials providing great potential to realize emergent phenomena, such as quantum anomalous Hall effect and axion-insulator state. Here we present our discovery that stoichiometric ferromagnet MnBi8Te13 with natural heterostructure MnBi2Te4-(Bi2Te3)3 is an unprecedented half-magnetic topological insulator, with the magnetization existing at the MnBi2Te4 surface but not at the opposite surface terminated by triple Bi2Te3 layers. Our angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy measurements unveil a massive Dirac gap at the MnBi2Te4 surface, and gapl…
Dynamic manipulation of magnetism in topological materials is demonstrated here via a Floquet engineering approach using circularly polarized light. Increasing the strength of the laser field, besides the expected topological phase transition, the magnetically doped topological insulator thin film also undergoes a magnetic phase transition from ferromagnetism to paramagnetism, whose critical behavior strongly depends on the quantum quenching. In sharp contrast to the equilibrium case, the non-equilibrium Curie temperatures vary for different time scale and experimental setup, not all relying o…
Large unsaturated magnetoresistance (XMR) with magnitude about 1000% is observed in topological insulator candidate TaSe3 from our high field (up to 38 T) measurements. Two oscillation modes, associated with one hole pocket and two electron pockets in the bulk, respectively, are detected from our Shubnikov-de Hass (SdH) measurements, consistent with our first-principles calculations. With the detailed Hall measurements performed, our two-band model analysis exhibits an imperfect density ratio n_h/n_e closing 0.9 at T< 20 K , which suggests that the carrier compensations account for the XMR in …
Yttrium iron garnet is a complex ferrimagnetic insulator with 20 magnon modes which is used extensively in fundamental experimental studies of magnetisation dynamics. As a transition metal oxide with moderate gap (2.8 eV), yttrium iron garnet requires a careful treatment of electronic correlation. We have applied quasiparticle self-consistent GW to provide a fully ab initio description of the electronic structure and resulting magnetic properties, including the parameterisation of a Heisenberg model for magnetic exchange interactions. Subsequent spin dynamical modelling with quantum statistics…
Newly synthesized perovskite NaOsO3 shows Curie-Weiss metallic nature at high temperature and suddenly goes into an antiferromagnetically insulating state at 410 K on cooling. Electronic specific heat at the low temperature limit is absent, indicating that the band gap fully opens. In situ observation in electron microscopy undetected any lattice anomalies in the vicinity of the transition temperature. It is most likely that the antiferromagnetic correlation plays an essential role of the gap opening.
Magnetic interaction with the gapless surface states in topological insulator (TI) has been predicted to give rise to a few exotic quantum phenomena. However, the effective magnetic doping of TI is still challenging in experiment. Using first-principles calculations, the magnetic doping properties (V, Cr, Mn and Fe) in three strong TIs (Bi$_{2}$Se$_{3}$, Bi$_{2}$Te$_{3}$ and Sb$_{2}$Te$_{3}$) are investigated. We find that for all three TIs the cation-site substitutional doping is most energetically favorable with anion-rich environment as the optimal growth condition. Further our results show…
In recent years, the role of crystal symmetries in enriching the variety of TIs have been actively investigated. Higher-order TIs are a new type of topological crystalline insulators that exhibit gapless boundary states whose dimensionality is lower than those on the surface of conventional TIs. In this paper, relying on a concrete tight-binding model, we show that higher-order TIs can be smoothly connected to conventional TIs in a lower dimension without the bulk-gap closing or symmetry breaking. Our result supports the understanding of higher- order TIs as a stacking of lower-dimensional TIs…
Ultra-high resolution synchrotron diffraction data for $\rm GdBaCo_2O_{5.5}$ throw new light on the metal-insulator transition of Co$^{3+}$ Ba-cobaltites. An anomalous expansion of CoO$_6$ octahedra is observed at the phase transition on heating, while CoO$_5$ pyramids show the normal shrinking at the closing of the gap. The insulator-to-metal transition is attributed to a sudden excitation of some electrons in the octahedra ($t_{2g}^6$ state) into the Co $e_g$ band (final $t_{2g}^4e_g^2$ state). The $t_{2g}^5e_g^1$ state in the pyramids does not change and the structural study also rules out …
In the search for new spintronic materials with high spin-polarization at room-temperature, we have synthesized an osmium based double perovskite with a Curie-temperature of 725 K. Our combined experimental results confirm the existence of a sizable induced magnetic moment at the Os site, supported by band-structure calculations in agreement with a proposed kinetic energy driven mechanism of ferrimagnetism in these compounds. The intriguing property of Sr2CrOsO6 is that it is at the endpoint of a metal-insulator transition due to 5d band filling, and at the same time ferrimagnetism and high-sp…
One of the key issues in the physics of topological insulators is whether the topologically non-trivial properties survive at finite temperatures and, if so, whether they disappear only at the temperature of topological gap closing. Here, we study this problem, using quantum fidelity as a measure, by means of \emph{ab-initio} methods supplemented by an effective dissipative theory built on the top of the \emph{ab-initio} electron and phonon band structures. In the case of SnTe, the prototypical crystal topological insulator, we reveal the presence of a characteristic temperature, much lower th…
The Local Density Approximation combined with Dynamical Mean-Field Theory (LDA+DMFT method) is applied to the study of the paramagnetic and magnetically ordered phases of hematite Fe$_2$O$_3$ as a function of volume. As the volume is decreased, a simultaneous 1st order insulator-metal and high-spin to low-spin transition occurs close to the experimental value of the critical volume. The high-spin insulating phase is destroyed by a progressive reduction of the charge gap with increasing pressure, upon closing of which the high spin phase becomes unstable. We conclude that the transition in Fe$_…
Anisotropic magnetoresistance (AMR) of Cr2Ge2Te6 (CGT), a layered ferromagnetic insulator, is investigated under an applied hydrostatic pressure up to 2 GPa. The easy axis direction of the magnetization is inferred from the AMR saturation feature in the presence and absence of the applied pressure. At zero applied pressure, the easy axis is along the c-direction or perpendicular to the layer. Upon application of a hydrostatic pressure>1 GPa, the uniaxial anisotropy switches to easy-plane anisotropy which drives the equilibrium magnetization from the c-axis to the ab-plane at zero magnetic fiel…
We have demonstrated the deposition of EuO films on graphene by reactive molecular beam epitaxy in a special adsorption-controlled and oxygen-limited regime, which is a critical advance toward the realization of the exchange proximity interaction (EPI). It has been predicted that when the ferromagnetic insulator (FMI) EuO is brought into contact with graphene, an overlap of electronic wavefunctions at the FMI/graphene interface can induce a large spin splitting inside the graphene. Experimental realization of this effect could lead to new routes for spin manipulation, which is a necessary requ…
The compound Bi14Rh3I9 has recently been suggested as a weak three-dimensional topological insulator on the basis of angle-resolved photoemission and scanning-tunneling experiments in combination with density functional (DF) electronic structure calculations. These methods unanimously support the topological character of the headline compound, but a compelling confirmation could only be obtained by dedicated transport experiments. The latter, however, are biased by an intrinsic n-doping of the materials surface due to its polarity. Electronic reconstruction of the polar surface shifts the topo…
Thin films of topological insulator Bi_2Se_3 were deposited directly on insulating ferromagnetic EuS. Unusual negative magnetoresistance was observed near the zero field below the Curie temperature (T_C), resembling the weak localization effect; whereas the usual positive magnetoresistance was recovered above T_C. Such negative magnetoresistance was only observed for Bi_2Se_3 layers thinner than t~4nm, when its top and bottom surfaces are coupled. These results provide evidence for a proximity effect between a topological insulator and an insulating ferromagnet, laying the foundation for futur…
An interface electron state at the junction between a three-dimensional topological insulator (TI) film of Bi2Se3 and a ferrimagnetic insulator film of Y3Fe5O12 (YIG) was investigated by measurements of angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy and X-ray absorption magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD). The surface state of the Bi2Se3 film was directly observed and localized 3d spin states of the Fe3+ state in the YIG film were confirmed. The proximity effect is likely described in terms of the exchange interaction between the localized Fe 3d electrons in the YIG film and delocalized electrons of…
We demonstrate the existence of Giant proximity magnetoresistance (PMR) effect in a graphene spin valve where spin polarization is induced by a nearby magnetic insulator. PMR calculations were performed for yttrium iron garnet (YIG), cobalt ferrite (CFO), and two europium chalcogenides EuO and EuS. We find a significant PMR (up to 100%) values defined as a relative change of graphene conductance with respect to parallel and antiparallel alignment of two proximity induced magnetic regions within graphene. Namely, for high Curie temperature (Tc) CFO and YIG insulators which are particularly impo…
The nuclear magnetic relaxation time $T_1$ in ferrimagnetic insulators is calculated by a Raman process of hyperfine interaction with a meanfield approximation. It is found that the 1/$T_1$ on one site rapidly increases near the compensation temperature $T_0$, whereas that on another site does not increase up to Curie temperature $T_c$. This is due to that the band width of soft magnon becomes comparable to $T_0$. The increasing behavior of 1/$T_1$ below $T_c$ is found also in another type ferrimagnet, which shows hump structure in the temperature dependence of magnetization instead of compens…
Doping Bi$_2$Se$_3$ by magnetic ions represents an interesting problem since it may break the time reversal symmetry needed to maintain the topological insulator character. Mn dopants in Bi$_2$Se$_3$ represent one of the most studied examples here. However, there is a lot of open questions regarding their magnetic ordering. In the experimental literature different Curie temperatures or no ferromagnetic order at all are reported for comparable Mn concentrations. This suggests that magnetic ordering phenomena are complex and highly susceptible to different growth parameters, which are known to a…
Ferromagnetic insulator Pr0.8Ca0.2Mn1-yCoyO3 (0 <= y <= 0.7) thin films were epitaxially grown on (LaAlO3)0.3-(SrAl0.5Ta0.5O3)0.7 (100) substrates by pulsed laser deposition. To probe the ferromagnetic insulator state of hole-doped manganites, the Co content dependences of the structural, magnetic, and transport properties were studied. Variation of lattice constant by the substitution of Co ions is well reproduced considering that divalent and trivalent Co ions substitute for Mn ions at the perovskite B-sites. For 0 <= y <= 0.3, the Curie temperature, saturation magnetization, and magnetoresi…
The structural, electrical transport and magnetic properties of perovskite oxides La1-xTexMnO3 have been investigated and thus the magnetic phase diagram of La1-xTexMnO3 compounds as a function of temperature and the doping level x has been obtained. All samples have rhombohedral structure and undergo paramagnetic-ferromagnetic (PM-FM) transition accompanied with metal-insulator transition (MIT). Whereas a charge ordering (CO) transition begins to appear at for the sample with x=0.60. Moreover, the variation of the Curie temperature and the MIT temperature is quite complex and the results are …
Topological band insulators and (semi-) metals can arise out of atomic insulators when the hopping strength between electrons increases. Such topological phases are separated from the atomic insulator by a bulk gap closing. In this work, we show that in many (magnetic) space groups, the crystals with certain Wyckoff positions and orbitals being occupied must be semimetal or metals in the atomic limit, e.g. the hopping strength between electrons is infinite weak but not vanishing, which then are termed atomic (semi-)metals (ASMs). We derive a sufficient condition for realizing ASMs in spinless …
